HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has filled several of Hogwarts’ most distinctive supporting roles for Season 1, including the voice behind the Sorting Hat and the magical school’s resident ghosts.
David Threlfall has been cast as the voice of the Sorting Hat. Leo Bill will play Nearly Headless Nick, the ghost associated with Gryffindor; Andrew Brooke is taking on Slytherin’s Bloody Baron; and Daniel Fearn will portray Hufflepuff ghost the Fat Friar. Laura Smyth has also joined as the Fat Lady, the portrait guardian at the entrance to Gryffindor House.
Season 1 adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and is scheduled to debut on HBO and HBO Max on Dec. 25. The additions further define a version of Hogwarts in which its oddest fixtures are not simply background decoration: a sentient hat makes a consequential school decision, ghosts remain attached to their former house identities, and a portrait literally controls access to a student common room.
The newly cast Hogwarts roles
Threlfall’s assignment is a voice role, an especially notable distinction within a cast otherwise built around on-screen character performances. The Sorting Hat is one of the wizarding school’s defining magical objects, responsible for placing new students into their Hogwarts houses. Its performer therefore has to establish a character audiences may hear more readily than see.

The five announced roles cover several different ways Hogwarts turns architecture and tradition into characters. Nearly Headless Nick, the Bloody Baron and the Fat Friar are ghosts tied to Gryffindor, Slytherin and Hufflepuff respectively. The Fat Lady is not a ghost; she is a portrait whose position as Gryffindor’s entrance guardian makes her a practical part of the school’s daily routine.
- David Threlfall: voice of the Sorting Hat
- Leo Bill: Nearly Headless Nick, Gryffindor’s house ghost
- Andrew Brooke: the Bloody Baron, Slytherin’s house ghost
- Daniel Fearn: the Fat Friar, Hufflepuff’s house ghost
- Laura Smyth: the Fat Lady, guardian of the Gryffindor entrance
For viewers, “house ghost” is a useful bit of Hogwarts terminology: it means a ghost connected with one of the school’s student houses rather than merely an apparition wandering the corridors. The current announcement identifies ghosts for three houses. It does not name a Ravenclaw house ghost, so there is no basis to assume that role has been cast or will appear in the first season.
That distinction matters with an adaptation planned across seasons. A casting announcement establishes who has been attached to a role, not the size of a part, the episode count, or the precise scenes that will be adapted. The confirmed information here is the performers, their characters and the Season 1 setting—not an episode-by-episode preview.

A large ensemble for Philosopher’s Stone
The central trio is led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult Hogwarts cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Other students confirmed for Season 1 include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown. Tristan Harland and Gabriel Harland play Fred and George Weasley, while Ruari Spooner is Percy Weasley. Finn Stephens and William Nash have been cast as Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle.
Hogwarts staff and other figures already in the ensemble include Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, Sirine Saba as Pomona Sprout, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Richard Durden as Cuthbert Binns, Louise Brealey as Rolanda Hooch, Bríd Brennan as Poppy Pomfrey, Leigh Gill as Griphook and Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.
Beyond the school, the announced cast includes Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley and Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley. Katherine Parkinson plays Molly Weasley, Gracie Cochrane is Ginny Weasley, Harry Gilby is Charlie Weasley, and Johnny Flynn has been cast as Lucius Malfoy. Bertie Carvel plays Cornelius Fudge, while Luke Thallon is Quirinus Quirrell. Jasper Talbot and Hannah Chinn are James and Lily Potter.
The breadth of those names signals that the series is assembling not only its headline characters but also much of the school community and the surrounding wizarding world. That is a useful marker for a television adaptation of the first book: Hogwarts functions through recurring classmates, professors, school employees, magical visitors and family members as much as through the three young leads.
What these castings say—and what they do not
The clearest practical implication is that the production is continuing to lock in roles that make Hogwarts feel inhabited. The Sorting Hat, house ghosts and Fat Lady are each strongly associated with specific places or rituals at the school. Their inclusion helps establish the texture of a magical institution rather than focusing only on plot-facing adults and students.
It would be premature, however, to infer how much additional material the show may create for any of them. The announced roles do not confirm expanded storylines, revised characterization, running time, episode titles or a release structure beyond the stated Dec. 25 debut. They are casting details, and should be read as such.
There is also a difference between a performer being attached to a character and a production describing the creative approach to that character. In Threlfall’s case, the wording specifically identifies him as the Sorting Hat’s voice, but no further performance or production technique has been detailed. Likewise, the ghost castings identify the actors and house associations without describing costume, visual effects or how frequently the characters will appear.
Season 2 is already moving ahead
Work is already underway on Season 2, based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Several new cast members have been announced for that next chapter: Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart, Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley, Lenny Rush as Dobby, Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle, Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley, Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle and Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey.
The early Season 2 activity gives the project a clearer multi-season trajectory while Season 1 prepares to introduce its foundational Hogwarts cast. It also separates the immediate viewing proposition from later additions: Lockhart, Dobby, Tom Riddle, Moaning Myrtle and Colin Creevey are confirmed in connection with the second season, not newly announced as Season 1 roles.
Francesca Gardiner writes and executive produces Season 1. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes. The series is produced for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers also include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, David Heyman, Laura Neal and Jon Brown.
For now, the latest casting round gives the series several voices and faces responsible for the stranger, more tradition-bound corners of Hogwarts. Before Harry, Hermione and Ron can settle into school life, the school itself needs to feel alive—or, in several cases, cheerfully and permanently undead.
