The Flaming Mane is the Phantom Edge that removes bramble barriers in Phantom Blade Zero. Although players may spot brambles much earlier, including at the Red Serpent House in the Crimson Forest, the tool itself is not available until the main story reaches Pangzhen, the game’s fourth region.

That timing matters. A bramble wall is not necessarily a puzzle that can be solved immediately; it is often a progression gate. The Flaming Mane is the relevant progression tool, meaning the most efficient approach is to keep following the main quest until Pangzhen rather than repeatedly searching earlier regions for an alternate route.

Unlocking it is also a two-part process. First, the player earns a dormant Flaming Mane after the Lion Dance Hall boss encounter. Then the item must be repaired at Jingyang Hall before it becomes the functional version capable of burning brambles.

Flaming Mane requirements

  • Reach Pangzhen, the fourth region.
  • Advance the main story to Pangzhen’s Backstreets.
  • Begin the quest “The Heart’s Trail.”
  • Visit Yu’er’s house and speak through all of Yu’er’s father’s dialogue.
  • Defeat the Lion Dancer Disciples to acquire the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key.
  • Clear Lion Dance Hall and defeat its two-stage boss sequence.
  • Travel to Jingyang Hall and ask Lei Dang to repair the dormant weapon.

Start “The Heart’s Trail” in Pangzhen

Once Pangzhen is available, follow the main quest until it leads into the Backstreets and starts “The Heart’s Trail.” The early part of this route sends the player to Yu’er’s house, passing the Lion Dance Hall along the way.

The visit to Yu’er’s house overlaps with the Flesh Lily quest, but the key action for the Flaming Mane route is simple: exhaust Yu’er’s father’s dialogue before leaving. In practical terms, continue speaking to him until no further dialogue remains. This prevents a common progression mistake where a player leaves after the first exchange and then wonders why the next step has not appeared.

Afterward, leave the house and deal with the nearby Lion Dancer Disciples. These enemies provide the next required item: the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key.

Use the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key

With the key in hand, return to the Lion Dance Hall. There is a Bell immediately outside the building, so this return trip can be handled through fast travel rather than a long run through Pangzhen.

Bells function as fast-travel points here, making them useful landmarks as well as travel shortcuts. In this case, the Bell outside Lion Dance Hall provides a clean reset point: use it to return, unlock the hall with the Heavy Lion Hall Gate Key, and continue inside.

Progress through the interior until the route climbs a set of stairs into the Lion Dance Hall Depths. The critical doorway is the gateway ahead. Passing through it leads into an arena and begins the encounter that awards the dormant Flaming Mane.

Defeat Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster

The arena encounter begins against Flame, the Mask-Bound Lion Dance Grandmaster. The fight’s broad survival priorities are clear: use parries often and stay out of the fire attacks. A parry is a defensive response timed to an opponent’s strike; the important takeaway here is that this battle rewards active defensive timing rather than simply absorbing attacks or remaining close to flames.

Do not assume the first victory ends the encounter. The fight has a second phase, The Lion Dance Grandmaster’s Final Dance. This section changes the encounter’s structure by putting the player on poles and requiring them to use a small cannon against the boss.

That mechanical shift is worth preparing for because the usual arena-fighting rhythm no longer applies in the same way. Keep the objective in mind: move across the poles safely while firing the cannon at the boss. The phase is unusual, but it is still part of the mandatory route to the Flaming Mane rather than optional side content.

Defeat both phases and the reward is the dormant Flaming Mane. It is an important milestone, but it cannot clear brambles yet. The weapon needs one more story stop before it becomes useful.

Repair the dormant Flaming Mane at Jingyang Hall

Fast travel to Jingyang Hall in southeastern Pangzhen. Open the gate to the hall, then approach its doorway. Doing so triggers a cutscene that introduces Lei Dang.

After the scene, speak with Lei Dang and select the dialogue option to repair the Flaming Mane. Lei Dang uses his Tiger Cannon to fuel the weapon, transforming the dormant item into the working Flaming Mane.

This distinction between obtaining and repairing the tool is the central detail to remember. If the inventory shows the dormant version and bramble barriers remain intact, the Lion Dance Hall objective is complete but the Jingyang Hall repair step is still missing.

What the Flaming Mane opens

Once repaired, the Flaming Mane can incinerate the bramble branches that block older routes. Some barriers conceal small spaces and assorted rewards, while others lead into significant new paths. In Pangzhen, the unlocked routes include access toward the slums, the mission-critical way to Mirage Estate, and a northeastern route toward the docks.

The tool also gives earlier regions new value. Backtrack to the Crimson Forest to open the Red Serpent House, then visit the Village of Lu for the Black Serpent House. Those destinations are especially easy to overlook because their barriers can be encountered long before Pangzhen makes the necessary Phantom Edge available.

A practical backtracking order

  1. Finish the repair at Jingyang Hall before attempting any bramble barrier.
  2. Check Pangzhen’s bramble-blocked paths first, particularly routes toward the slums, Mirage Estate and the docks.
  3. Return to Crimson Forest and use the Flaming Mane at the Red Serpent House.
  4. Visit Village of Lu and clear the Black Serpent House barrier.
  5. Keep an eye out for smaller bramble-sealed areas, since not every barrier leads to a major zone; some protect compact reward spaces.

The broader lesson is that the Flaming Mane is both a main-story unlock and a cleanup tool. Its main-quest placement means it should arrive naturally while progressing through Pangzhen, but its lasting purpose is revisiting blocked routes with the correct capability in hand.
