Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat are headed back to comics. Oni Press has revealed Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, a new comic planned for January 2027, with Jenna Ayoub writing and Damali Beatty providing the art.
The project was presented during New York Comic Con Retailer Day. It brings a pair of creators with notably different but compatible backgrounds to one of animation’s stranger and most emotionally flexible corners: Ayoub has prior experience with several all-ages cartoon-comic adaptations, including Adventure Time, while Beatty previously worked with Oni Press on First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth and has also self-published a collection of illustration and comics work.
There are still major details to come. No story synopsis, issue count, format, cover information, or further release specifics were included with the reveal. But the title and creative team establish the key fact for readers: this is a new comic centered on Fionna and Cake, rather than a reissue or an announcement for the original Finn-and-Jake-led comic material.
Why Fionna and Cake occupy a distinct place in Adventure Time
Adventure Time, created by Pendleton Ward, aired on Cartoon Network from 2010 through 2018. Its core duo, Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, traveled the Land of Ooo in stories that could be absurd sword-and-sorcery comedy one week and deeply personal fantasy the next. Ooo’s post-apocalyptic foundations gave the show room for material about loss, growing older, identity, and the remnants of a world-ending past, even as it retained an intentionally playful surface.
Fionna and Cake began within that larger fiction. They were initially presented as creations of the Ice King: Fionna is a human counterpart to Finn, while Cake is a cat counterpart to Jake. The premise was more than a simple character swap, though. By making their earliest appearances part of the Ice King’s fanfiction, the series could play with authorship, aspiration, and the character’s wish to see himself as a heroic figure.
The later animated spin-off took that starting point into considerably different territory. Developed by Adam Muto for Max in 2023, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake begins with Fionna Campbell living in a comparatively ordinary, magic-free city. Cake is initially an ordinary cat, and neither has memories of Ooo. Their journey eventually involves travel between universes and an effort to understand both the basis of their world and a threat that seeks to erase it.
That setup makes Fionna and Cake especially promising material for a comic continuation or new comic story. The characters are tied to the familiar mythology of Ooo, but their premise is also built around worlds that do not necessarily operate by Ooo’s rules. In practical terms, that leaves the creative team with a broad visual and storytelling frame without the announcement needing to promise a particular setting or plot at this stage.
The creative team
Jenna Ayoub returns to familiar territory
Ayoub is the creator of the graphic novel Forever Home. Her past work also includes comic adaptations and tie-ins connected to several animated properties: Adventure Time, Regular Show, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Steven Universe. She has additionally been a regular My Little Pony artist at IDW.
That background matters because licensed comics have a particular balancing act. They need to feel recognizable to existing fans while still delivering a story that works as a comic rather than as a transcript of an episode. Familiarity with the rhythms, character voices, and visual economies of cartoon-based comics is valuable in a property like Adventure Time, where wild jokes, quiet emotional beats, and elaborate fantasy concepts often share the same scene.
Ayoub’s existing association with Adventure Time comics also creates a direct connection between the new book and the franchise’s printed history. The announcement does not define how closely this title will connect to any previous comic continuity, so readers should not assume returning plotlines or characters until more information is released. Still, Ayoub joins the project with prior knowledge of the broader creative space.
Damali Beatty brings a new visual voice
Beatty worked on Oni Press’s First Freedom: The Story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth, a book focused on the story of Opal Lee and Juneteenth, and has self-published a short collection of her own illustration and comic work. Her involvement is a meaningful part of the announcement because the identity of a comic adaptation is not only determined by which characters appear. Page design, body language, environments, and the handling of sudden tonal shifts can all shape whether a book feels energetic, surreal, intimate, or unsettling.
Fionna and Cake has a premise that can move from an apparently mundane city to inter-universal fantasy. That is an opportunity for strong contrast on the page, but it is not a description of any confirmed sequence from this new comic. Until Oni Press shares preview pages or a story outline, the most accurate expectation is simply that Beatty will be the artist responsible for realizing the characters and world of this particular series.
What the January 2027 announcement does—and does not—confirm
- Confirmed: Oni Press is publishing a new Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake comic.
- Confirmed: Jenna Ayoub is attached as writer and Damali Beatty as artist.
- Confirmed: The comic is planned for January 2027.
- Not yet detailed: Its plot, number of issues, exact format, cover lineup, and whether other characters from the animated series will appear.
That distinction is worth making early. The franchise has accumulated multiple layers of continuity across the original animated show, comics, and the Fionna-and-Cake spin-off. A new comic can be exciting without readers filling in unannounced details about when it takes place, which version of a character it uses, or whether it follows directly from a specific screen story.
For comic shops, the January 2027 date gives the book an early place on the longer-range calendar, but it is too soon to treat it as a fully specified product. Retailer and collector decisions generally depend on practical details such as final format, cover programs, print information, and ordering data; none of those were part of this reveal. The sensible takeaway is to watch for the publisher’s future solicitations rather than presume variants, special editions, or other release plans.
A wider convention-week comics conversation
The Fionna and Cake reveal arrived amid a busy New York Comic Con period for comic publishing news. Readers following other convention-related publishing developments can also see the discussion around Marvel’s “Marvel Brick” paperback line. The two announcements concern very different properties, but together they underline how convention presentations can put future reading plans on the map well before complete publication details arrive.
For now, the strongest reason to follow this particular title is the combination of its focus and its talent. Fionna and Cake have grown from an in-universe fiction into protagonists capable of carrying stories about reality, memory, magical possibility, and the desire for a life that feels larger than ordinary routine. Ayoub and Beatty will be taking on characters whose history already encourages experimentation. What form that next adventure takes remains to be seen when further details emerge ahead of January 2027.
