Marvel’s New York Comic Con 2026 television and animation presentation supplied a notably broad snapshot of what is next for Disney+: a returning street-level team, a darker animated mutant conflict, a fresh live-action spy thriller and a multi-year run of undead specials. The panel also leaned into a useful distinction for audiences keeping score at home: some projects received firm dates and formal announcements, while much of the most tantalizing material was footage shown only inside the room.
The headline development for live action was Marvel Zodiac, an officially announced spy thriller planned for Disney+ in 2028. The presentation also confirmed that Daredevil: Born Again season 3 will bring Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist back under the Defenders banner. On the animated side, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 has a January 13, 2027 premiere date and Venom involvement, while X-Men ’97 season 3 appears poised to tackle a politically charged anti-mutant crackdown.
Daredevil: Born Again season 3 puts Matt Murdock behind bars
Footage from Daredevil: Born Again season 3 established an especially brutal setting for its final run. The sequence reportedly showed the other Defenders in a government building before shifting to Matt Murdock in prison. Bullseye then triggers an explosion within the prison, and Matt appears to fashion a Daredevil-style outfit from his orange jumpsuit before violently confronting another inmate.
Matt’s voiceover frames the incarceration as a consequence he is willing to accept for opposing a figure who sought to rule the city. It is a grim premise, but a legible one for the character: his drive to protect people can place him at odds with the institutions meant to uphold the law. A prison story can turn that contradiction into the season’s central pressure point, especially if Matt must operate without the usual freedom, tools and support network associated with Daredevil.
It is important not to overread a convention-footage description as a complete plot outline. The footage confirms a prison-set confrontation and Bullseye’s involvement, not the scope of either storyline or the aftermath of the apparent attack. Still, the material signals that the series intends to send its lead into hostile territory rather than simply assembling familiar faces for a victory lap.
The Defenders are back together
The panel reunited the performers associated with the Defenders lineup, including Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones. The on-stage reunion supports the previously established point that season 3 will mark the first time Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have come together since their 2017 Netflix team-up.
That carries more weight than a routine guest appearance. “The Defenders” refers to the street-level Marvel group built around those four heroes, whose individual series initially occupied a shared corner of the wider Marvel television universe. Reassembling them in a final season gives Born Again an opportunity to treat Daredevil’s ending as a wider ensemble event, rather than an isolated conclusion.
Cox also acknowledged the #SaveDaredevil fan campaign when discussing the final season, suggesting that supporters may be preparing to rally again. His comment is not a confirmation of any continuation beyond season 3, and viewers should not treat it as one. It does, however, recognize the unusually durable audience investment surrounding the character and the show’s previous cancellation-and-revival history.

Spider-Man gets Venom, with a date that needs reading carefully
The first poster for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2 confirms Venom’s presence and points to a Disney+ debut on January 13, 2027. The date matters because the panel material included an inconsistent year in one reference; the broader schedule identifies 2027, and that is the date to put on the calendar.
Venom is one of Spider-Man’s most recognizable antagonistic or antiheroic counterparts, depending on the version of the story. But the poster confirmation alone does not establish which specific interpretation will appear, how large the role will be, or whether the character will be friend, enemy or something between the two. For an alternate-universe Spider-Man series, that uncertainty is part of the appeal: familiar imagery does not necessarily promise familiar story beats.
The season has also been described as set to introduce Gwen Stacy, with the possibility of Spider-Gwen left open. Until Marvel provides a fuller cast or story breakdown, Venom is the concrete addition. For a separate rundown of the confirmed date and symbiote reveal, see Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man season 2’s Disney+ schedule.
X-Men ’97 footage points to unrest, surveillance and a wedding
Exclusive X-Men ’97 season 3 footage began with graffiti asking where the X-Men are, then moved through images of riots and a situation in which mutants seemingly cannot travel without documentation. A Sentinel targets a mutant before the Brotherhood intervenes. Storm and Professor Xavier later discuss the fate of the United States in the context of an anti-mutant president.
In plain terms, the footage points toward a story about state power and the movement of a marginalized population. Documentation requirements and Sentinel attacks evoke a society where mutant identity is being treated as a basis for control and danger. The Sentinels are giant machines traditionally associated with anti-mutant enforcement, while the Brotherhood is a mutant group whose methods and loyalties have varied across Marvel stories. Their arrival to save a mutant does not, by itself, tell audiences whether they will be uncomplicated allies.
The footage also makes room for something more joyous: Rogue and Gambit’s wedding, with She-Hulk among the guests. It is an effective counterpoint to the public crisis presented elsewhere in the reel. A wedding gives season 3 a personal focal point amid political turmoil, though it would be premature to assume the ceremony will be free of complications just because it has made it as far as the invitation list.
Marvel had already positioned Mystique as a major returning threat for season 3 after the characters mostly survived the Age of Apocalypse. The new footage broadens the apparent conflict from a battle with one shapeshifting assassin to a harsher national environment for mutants. More details remain restricted to the convention screening, so exact story mechanics are still unknown. The available footage description is nevertheless enough to make the season’s social stakes clear. Read more on the footage’s border-crisis implications in the X-Men ’97 season 3 announcement.
Marvel Zombies shifts to three annual specials
Rather than announcing a second season, Marvel confirmed three more Marvel Zombies specials under director Brian Andrews. The schedule is unusually clear:
- Marvel Zombies: The Winter Soldier — Halloween 2027
- Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu — 2028
- Marvel Zombies: The Last Guardian — Halloween 2029
The word “special” is significant. It generally indicates a standalone event rather than a conventional multi-episode season, so viewers should not presume the same release structure as a serialized series. The three-title roadmap instead suggests a staggered, annual format with room for each entry to spotlight a different element of the setting.
Marvel described the animated project as gory and blood-splattered while also calling it beautiful, an intentional tone that separates it from the franchise’s more all-ages animated offerings. Andrews previously directed episodes of What If...?, the series from which Marvel Zombies spun out. The presentation further stated that work on the final special is around the animatics stage.
Animatics are a production-stage version of a scene that uses edited storyboards, temporary timing, sound and sometimes rough movement to test pacing and visual storytelling before the finished animation is created. Being at that stage does not mean a project is close to public release; with the final special scheduled for 2029, it instead indicates that planning and scene construction are moving forward well ahead of the eventual premiere.
The title The Last Guardian is deliberately withholding the identity of its central figure. That is a mystery Marvel has explicitly chosen not to resolve yet, so speculation should remain just that. Likewise, the new specials replace any expectation that the next chapter would simply arrive as “season 2.”
Marvel Zodiac gives the live-action slate a concrete next step
Marvel Zodiac is the panel’s biggest entirely new series announcement. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation, described it as a spy thriller, said filming is due to begin in London in spring, and set a 2028 Disney+ release window. Casting is expected to begin being revealed in the coming weeks.
A spy thriller generally puts secrecy, intelligence work, infiltration, divided loyalties and information warfare ahead of a straightforward hero-versus-villain brawl. That description establishes a genre direction, not a cast, character roster or plot. The announced logo reportedly contains details for comic readers, but Marvel has not yet unpacked those references publicly.
The project is consequential because the known live-action pipeline had looked sparse after Daredevil: Born Again season 3. Zodiac gives viewers one confirmed destination beyond Daredevil’s finale, even if 2028 is still some distance away. It also signals a willingness to build a series around espionage instead of immediately launching another familiar character-led title. More on the confirmed premise and window is available in our Marvel Zodiac overview.
VisionQuest remains the nearest Marvel TV arrival
For all the long-range news, VisionQuest is closest to release. The Vision-centered series premieres Wednesday, October 14 and will run for eight episodes. It follows 2021’s WandaVision and 2024’s Agatha All Along, completing the trilogy those shows began.
Paul Bettany returns as Vision, while James Spader reprises Ultron in human form. A new poster revealed at the convention was described as suitably trippy, which fits a series connected to Vision, artificial intelligence and the strange emotional aftershocks of WandaVision. Beyond those confirmed elements, the panel does not establish what role Ultron will play or how directly the show’s story will intersect with the other newly discussed projects.
The larger takeaway is one of range rather than a single unified teaser: Daredevil is heading toward a dangerous final team-up, Spider-Man is adding Venom, the X-Men face a hostile political order, Zombies becomes a recurring seasonal event, and Zodiac opens a new live-action lane. Some of Marvel’s most immediate answers remain locked in convention-only footage. But its timetable is now considerably easier to read.
