Anthony Mackie’s next major assignment is Shakespeare before superheroes. The actor is set to play the title role in a Broadway production of Macbeth, with rehearsals beginning in February and previews planned for late March. The New York engagement is scheduled to run until July 2027.

That commitment now matters well beyond the theatre calendar. Mackie has indicated that he will return to complete his work on Avengers: Secret Wars once his Broadway run is over, placing at least some of his work on the Marvel film in the latter half of 2027.

“Once I finish on Broadway, I’ll go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars,” Mackie said.

The comment is not an official production timetable, and it does not establish precisely when cameras will roll, how long Mackie will be needed, or whether he will have already completed other material before beginning Macbeth. It does, however, offer a meaningful clue: Secret Wars work involving Mackie is expected to continue after July 2027.

That is notable because Marvel’s currently planned theatrical date for Avengers: Secret Wars is December 17, 2027. No delay has been announced. Still, Mackie’s schedule puts the gap between a likely late-2027 period of filming and the announced release into sharper focus, especially for a film expected to be a large-scale event production.

What Mackie’s schedule actually tells us

The clearest fact is fairly narrow: Mackie expects unfinished Secret Wars work to remain once his Broadway engagement concludes in July 2027. That is stronger than broad fan speculation, but it is not the same as a full confirmation that principal photography begins in August, that Mackie is required for every shoot day, or that the entire production waits for him.

Principal photography is the industry term for the main period in which scenes are filmed with the cast. A movie can also require additional photography later, such as reshoots, pickups, insert shots, voice recording, or performance-capture work. Mackie’s wording says he will go to “finish up” his Avengers obligations, a phrase broad enough to cover several possibilities. It should not be treated as a detailed breakdown of the production plan.

What it does suggest is that Marvel is planning around a real and substantial professional commitment. A Broadway lead is not a casual calendar hold: rehearsals are due to begin in February, previews arrive in late March, and the run extends through July. That leaves Mackie with only a limited window before the stage production begins, while the latter half of 2027 becomes the more obvious period for whatever Avengers work remains on his schedule.

The timing is especially interesting because Avengers: Secret Wars follows Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently dated for December 18. There had been an expectation that Secret Wars might start shooting earlier, but reports have pointed instead toward an early-2027 start. There is currently no indication that shooting will begin in 2026.

The calendar pressure is mostly a post-production question

Fans watching release dates often think only in terms of whether a cast member can stand on a set before premiere day. The larger concern is what must happen after the footage is captured.

Post-production is the stage in which filmed material is shaped into the finished movie. It can include editing performances and scenes together, recording or refining sound, building music and effects, color work, and extensive visual-effects work. For a modern superhero tentpole, those processes can overlap with filming rather than waiting for every last day of photography to end. Individual sequences can move forward while other scenes are still being made.

That overlap means a late filming period does not automatically make a December release impossible. It also means an outside observer cannot determine a movie’s true state simply by knowing one actor’s availability. Some sequences may be completed well beforehand; other work could involve a relatively contained number of scenes; and the film’s production may be structured around cast availability.

Even so, the window is understandably drawing attention. If Mackie’s remaining material is filmed after July 2027, the time until December 17 would be comparatively short for a project described as an enormous blockbuster. Visual effects in particular can involve work that continues deep into a release year, and an Avengers-scale story is likely to require a considerable amount of coordination. That is analysis of the calendar, not confirmation that the film is behind schedule or unable to meet its date.

There is, at present, no official indication that the December 17, 2027 release has moved. The important distinction is simple: a tight-looking public schedule can raise questions, but it is not itself evidence of a delay.

Doomsday could shape the next film’s finishing work

There is also a possible creative advantage to completing some Secret Wars work after audiences have seen Avengers: Doomsday. With Doomsday currently set to arrive on December 18, Marvel would be able to gauge audience reaction before all of its follow-up work is locked.

That does not mean the studio will rewrite its plans in response to viewers, nor is there evidence that it intends to do so. Large productions are built around scripts, logistics, crew schedules, effects pipelines, and performer availability long before release. But later filming can provide room for adjustments at the edges: clarity around a character beat, the shape of a transition, or emphasis placed on elements that audiences respond to most strongly.

That possibility matters in a two-film structure where the first entry is positioned as the immediate precursor to the second. Joe and Anthony Russo, who are directing, have described Doomsday as having a focused, fast-moving story and a “very surprising ending.” They have also said it will rank among Marvel’s longest films. If that ending is intended to propel viewers directly toward Secret Wars, then the follow-up’s final work carries extra pressure to preserve continuity and payoff.

For viewers, the practical takeaway is not that every rumor deserves a countdown clock. It is that Mackie’s Broadway announcement has supplied one firm piece of scheduling information in a production picture that otherwise remains incomplete. His role as Macbeth runs into July 2027, and his own comments place further Secret Wars work after that point.

A stage role and a superhero sequel can coexist

The headline-grabbing part of this news is the apparent squeeze on Secret Wars, but Mackie’s decision also highlights the different demands of the two jobs. A Broadway lead requires recurring live performances over months, while a blockbuster film is built through scheduled blocks of shoots that can involve large casts and multiple departments. The commitments are difficult to overlap, which makes the separation in Mackie’s comments straightforward: theatre first, remaining Avengers work afterward.

It is also a reminder not to confuse an actor’s calendar with an entire film’s calendar. Secret Wars may have extensive work that does not involve Mackie at all. Promotional duties for Doomsday are also expected to intensify from late November onward, creating another demand on the ensemble before the Broadway production begins.

Superhero projects are increasingly assessed through their interconnected schedules, whether the question is a film’s release window or the future of a series such as the unresolved status of another comic-book universe’s second season. In this case, though, the verified takeaway remains specific: Mackie has a long Broadway commitment, and he expects his remaining Secret Wars work to follow it.

Until Marvel provides a formal update on filming or the release date, that is the most useful way to read the situation. The December 17, 2027 date remains on the calendar. Mackie’s comments make clear that the road to it includes a return to Avengers work after July 2027.
