A Quiet Place Part 3 is set to give Cillian Murphy’s Emmett a major personal connection that was not previously apparent: Jack O’Connell says the two actors play brothers in John Krasinski’s next entry in the sound-sensitive survival-horror series.
The detail turns O’Connell’s casting into something more consequential than the arrival of an unrelated survivor. Emmett entered A Quiet Place Part 2 as a guarded, isolated man who believed he had lost his family. Giving him a living brother immediately opens a new emotional thread for the returning character—and, in a franchise built around the risks and responsibilities of protecting relatives, makes family central to the sequel’s setup once again.
“A Quiet Place felt like family. It’s about family, obviously. Got John Krasinski and Emily Blunt involved, and Cillian and I play brothers. There was a real familial feel to that one.”
O’Connell made the comments while discussing the production at the Newport Beach Film Festival. No character name for his role has been shared, and the film’s broader plot remains under wraps. Still, the brother reveal provides a firm piece of story information for a sequel that has otherwise kept its narrative cards close to its chest.
Why Emmett’s brother changes the stakes
Murphy first appeared as Emmett in 2021’s A Quiet Place Part 2. The character was established as an old friend of Lee Abbott, played by Krasinski, and as someone who had endured devastating losses after the Death Angels’ arrival. By the time Evelyn Abbott and her children encounter him, Emmett is living by himself in a bunker and says that he has lost his family.
That history is important context for the new revelation. Emmett’s apparent lack of family was not merely background detail; it helped explain why he had withdrawn from others and become hardened by survival. A brother who is still alive could confront that isolation directly. It also raises straightforward questions the film has not answered: Did the brothers lose contact during the invasion? Have they been separated for years? And does O’Connell’s character know that Emmett survived?
Those are questions, not confirmed plot points. What is confirmed is the relationship itself. The distinction matters with a franchise whose premise encourages audiences to theorize around every unseen person, signal and safe location. At present, there is no official word on where the brothers meet, whether they begin the film together, or whether they share the same outlook on the remaining survivors.
A quick refresher on the threat
The Death Angels are the creatures at the center of the A Quiet Place films. Their key trait is exceptionally acute hearing: noise can draw immediate, lethal attention. That premise makes ordinary actions—talking, walking across a noisy surface, opening a door or operating equipment—potential sources of suspense.
It also means relationships tend to have a practical dimension alongside the emotional one. Families and groups must communicate carefully, make decisions quickly and balance the urge to help one another against the danger of attracting the creatures. A reunion between estranged siblings therefore has built-in dramatic pressure even before the sequel discloses a specific villain, mission or destination.
The Abbott family is expected to return
Emily Blunt is set to reprise Evelyn Abbott in A Quiet Place Part 3. Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are also expected back as Evelyn’s children, Regan and Marcus Abbott. The returning ensemble places Emmett’s newly revealed brother within the orbit of characters who already know him and who have experienced their own losses.
Lee Abbott died earlier in the series, but his friendship with Emmett established a pre-existing bridge between the Abbotts and Murphy’s character. The new sibling connection does not reveal where the next story goes, yet it reinforces the franchise’s recurring interest in found family, surviving family and the difficult choices people make to preserve both.
Krasinski is attached as director, writer and producer. His involvement is another point of continuity for the mainline series, which has followed the Abbott family’s survival while expanding the world beyond their farm and immediate community.
O’Connell and Murphy already share a horror-franchise connection
A Quiet Place Part 3 will not be the first horror property to include both O’Connell and Murphy. O’Connell appeared as Jimmy Crystal, a killer, in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Murphy played Jim in the original 28 Days Later and made a cameo at the end of the 2026 sequel after O’Connell’s character had been killed.
That overlap does not tell viewers anything concrete about O’Connell’s A Quiet Place role. In particular, there is no confirmed indication that Emmett’s brother is a hero, antagonist or something more complicated. But O’Connell’s addition gives the film another performer with recent genre credentials, while Murphy returns to a role audiences already know as bruised, resourceful and deeply shaped by grief.

What has—and has not—been confirmed
The useful headline is simple: Murphy and O’Connell’s characters are brothers. The film also has its principal returning Abbott family members in place, and Krasinski is serving in all three key creative roles of director, writer and producer.
Everything beyond that relationship remains uncertain. No synopsis has been released. There are no disclosed details about O’Connell’s character name, the brothers’ history, their status at the beginning of the film, or how closely the story follows Evelyn, Regan and Marcus. There is likewise no confirmed description of a new threat beyond the established Death Angels and the dangerous post-invasion world.
That limited information is enough, however, to suggest that the sequel will not treat Emmett as simply a familiar face brought back for continuity. His brother gives him unfinished personal history and potentially a new reason to risk connection. In a world where silence is survival, that could become one of the film’s most meaningful sources of tension.
A Quiet Place Part 3 is scheduled to reach cinemas on July 30, 2027.
