Grand Theft Auto VI’s public history has unfolded in stages rather than through one complete reveal. Rockstar first confirmed that the next Grand Theft Auto entry was in active development, then waited nearly two years before showing its setting, characters and initial release window.
Since then, the game has passed through two announced schedule changes: from a 2025 window to May 26, 2026, and later to November 19, 2026. Rockstar and Take-Two have also confirmed the announced platforms, preorder timing, prices, preload plans, physical-format details and several major promotional showcases.
This chronology covers the confirmed milestones from February 2022 through October 7, 2026. It distinguishes development confirmation from a full reveal, separates trailer footage from confirmed gameplay systems and treats November 19, 2026, as a scheduled date rather than a completed launch.
Evidence note: This article uses confirmed Rockstar and Take-Two announcements and clearly identifies what remains unannounced. A PC version, GTA VI Online timing, post-launch content and any further delay are not confirmed by the official launch materials reviewed through October 7, 2026.
February 4, 2022: Rockstar confirms active development
The first official milestone arrived on February 4, 2022, in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Community Update. The studio confirmed that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series was well underway.
That announcement was important, but it was not yet a full Grand Theft Auto VI reveal. Rockstar did not use the GTA VI name in the relevant passage, did not show footage and did not provide a release window or launch platforms. At that point, the company had confirmed only that work on the next mainline entry was progressing.
This distinction matters because the announcement does not establish when development began. It describes the project’s status on February 4, 2022, rather than providing a production start date. It also does not confirm that the public campaign had begun in the conventional sense; Rockstar was still primarily communicating with the existing GTA Online community.
- Confirmed: active development on the next Grand Theft Auto entry was underway.
- Not announced: the final title, release date, platforms or footage.
- Not established: the project’s exact development start date.
November 8, 2023: Rockstar announces the first trailer
Rockstar’s next major communication came on November 8, 2023. In a message from Rockstar Games, Sam Houser said the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would be released in early December.
The announcement still did not provide a specific launch date, detailed plot summary or platform list. Its role was to establish the first formal reveal window after the February 2022 development confirmation.
That message also set expectations for the material that followed. Rockstar promised a trailer, not a complete gameplay presentation or a full technical breakdown. The game was still described as the next Grand Theft Auto rather than being extensively introduced in the announcement itself.
- Confirmed: the first trailer was planned for early December 2023.
- Still unknown at this stage: the final release date, editions and launch details.
- The trailer announcement was separate from the later release of Trailer 1.
December 5, 2023: Trailer 1 reveals Leonida and a 2025 window
Rockstar released the first Grand Theft Auto VI trailer on December 5, 2023. This was the point at which the project’s identity, setting and initial launch plan became public in a much more complete form.
The trailer and accompanying announcement identified the state of Leonida as the setting and highlighted a return to Vice City. The footage also introduced Lucia and showed the broader social and criminal world surrounding the story. Take-Two’s accompanying announcement described the game as coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
The announcement did not provide a month or day. It also did not announce a PC version. Those omissions became important later, because subsequent official launch listings continued to identify only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Trailer footage established what Rockstar chose to show, but it did not automatically create a complete list of playable systems. A scene involving a vehicle, weapon or character interaction can be officially shown without proving every detail of how that feature works in the final game.
- Confirmed: Leonida is the setting, including a return to Vice City.
- Confirmed: the initial release window was 2025.
- Confirmed launch platforms at the time: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Not announced: a specific 2025 date or a PC version.
2024: Take-Two narrows the window to fall 2025
During 2024, Take-Two’s investor communications gave the original 2025 window more precision. The company described Grand Theft Auto VI as expected for fall 2025 and placed it within the outlook for fiscal 2026.
This was a narrower seasonal forecast, not a specific launch-day announcement. Rockstar had not supplied a day or month, so the official information still pointed to a period rather than a firm calendar date.
The difference between a seasonal window and a dated launch became significant once the schedule changed in 2025. Fall 2025 was an active business expectation at that stage, but it was not a promise of a September, October or November release.
The platform information remained unchanged in the official material reviewed for this timeline. No official announcement had established a PC release, a GTA VI Online launch schedule or additional editions.
- Confirmed: Take-Two narrowed the 2025 window to fall 2025.
- Not confirmed: a specific day or month in fall 2025.
- The announced platforms remained PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
May 2, 2025: Rockstar moves the game to May 26, 2026
On May 2, 2025, Rockstar announced the first schedule change. Grand Theft Auto VI would no longer arrive in fall 2025; the new scheduled date was May 26, 2026.
Rockstar apologized for the additional wait and said the extra time was needed to finish the game at the quality level it expected players to receive. Take-Two’s investor communication supported the revised date and said the company supported Rockstar taking additional time to realize its creative vision.
May 26, 2026, therefore became the official scheduled date from May 2 until the next announced change in November. It should not be presented as a date that remained active after Rockstar later moved the game again.
- Confirmed: the fall 2025 window was superseded.
- Confirmed: the replacement date was May 26, 2026.
- Rockstar identified additional development time and quality as the reason for the change.
May 6, 2025: Trailer 2 expands the official setup
Four days after announcing the May 2026 delay, Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto VI’s second trailer on May 6, 2025. Keeping these dates separate is important: the schedule change came first, followed by the new trailer.
Trailer 2 provided more story context around Jason and Lucia and showed a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. It also continued to identify PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the announced platforms.
The trailer expanded the official story setup, character presentation and view of Leonida. It did not, by itself, confirm every gameplay system viewers might infer from a scene or animation. As with Trailer 1, the footage was an official presentation of selected material rather than a complete feature list or technical specification.
- Confirmed: Trailer 2 released on May 6, 2025.
- Officially shown: additional story context involving Jason, Lucia and Leonida.
- Confirmed platforms remained PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Trailer footage should not be treated as a complete list of playable systems.
November 6, 2025: the launch moves to November 19, 2026
Rockstar announced the second schedule change on November 6, 2025. Grand Theft Auto VI moved from May 26, 2026, to Thursday, November 19, 2026.
Rockstar said the additional months would allow the team to finish the game with the level of polish players had come to expect. Take-Two confirmed the same date in its fiscal second-quarter 2026 results announcement, and its product lineup listed the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
This is the current announced launch date as of October 7, 2026. It is best described as scheduled rather than completed: the game has not launched, and a scheduled date can still change if Rockstar or Take-Two makes another official announcement.
The November update superseded May 26, 2026. Both dates remain part of the historical chronology, but only November 19, 2026, represents the current official plan in the reviewed launch materials.
- Confirmed: May 26, 2026, was replaced by November 19, 2026.
- Confirmed: the current announced date is Thursday, November 19, 2026.
- Rockstar cited additional polish for the second delay.
- Take-Two separately confirmed the date in its financial communication.
June 24–25, 2026: preorders, prices and preload details arrive
Rockstar and Take-Two announced on June 24, 2026, that preorders for Grand Theft Auto VI would begin at midnight local time on June 25. Take-Two listed a $79.99 standard edition and a $99.99 Ultimate Edition.
The preorder announcement described GTA VI as a single-player experience. That confirms the description used in the launch material, but it does not establish a separate online launch plan or rule out future announcements beyond the information provided.
Rockstar and Take-Two also confirmed that digital preloads would begin on November 12, 2026, one week before the scheduled launch. The physical version would be available from November 12 to support preloading and would contain a download code inside the box.
Rockstar’s support documentation later made the format distinction explicit: the physical box would not include a disc. Buyers should therefore avoid describing the product as a conventional disc edition unless a later official announcement changes that information.
The preorder announcements also listed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. They did not announce a PC edition or a GTA VI multiplayer launch schedule.
- Confirmed: preorders began at midnight local time on June 25, 2026.
- Confirmed prices: $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
- Confirmed: digital preloads were planned for November 12, 2026.
- Confirmed: the physical box contains a download code rather than a disc.
- Not announced in these materials: a PC edition or online launch schedule.
August 6–27, 2026: Rockstar adds an extended look
Rockstar announced on August 6, 2026, that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look would premiere on Netflix on August 27, with releases planned for the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the GTA VI website. The presentation was positioned as a larger promotional showcase than the original trailer announcements.
On August 27, Rockstar confirmed that the extended look was available and described it as being captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. That makes it an official presentation of the game’s visual material and scenes, while still requiring care over what it proves about final gameplay systems, performance or other platforms.
The extended look did not replace the November 19 launch date. It added another major marketing milestone to the prelaunch campaign while keeping the previously announced platforms and release plan in place.
- Confirmed: the extended look was announced for August 27, 2026.
- Confirmed: the presentation was planned for Netflix, YouTube and Rockstar’s official GTA VI website.
- Confirmed: the released extended look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.
- Shown footage is not automatically a promise about every final gameplay feature or performance target.
September 17–24, 2026: the marketing campaign expands beyond trailers
Rockstar’s official GTA VI Newswire listings show that the campaign continued after the extended look. On September 17, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, scheduled to arrive on November 19 alongside the game. The announcement added a music-focused promotional milestone, but it did not change the launch date or platform list.
On September 24, Rockstar opened preorders for The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, a limited-edition collectible set inspired by Leonida’s in-universe television show, Macca the Gator. Rockstar stated that the collectible box would arrive on November 19 and that the game would be sold separately.
These announcements belong in the chronology because they are official GTA VI campaign milestones. They should not be confused with new game editions or evidence of a changed software package. The collectible box is separate from the game, while the album announcement concerns the wider promotional and music program.
- Confirmed: Rockstar announced The Album for November 19, 2026.
- Confirmed: Rockstar opened preorders for the separate Goodtime State – Vice City Collection on September 24, 2026.
- The collectible box is separate from the game.
- Neither September announcement changed the scheduled launch date or listed platforms.
October 7, 2026: the current official status
As of October 7, 2026, Rockstar’s official GTA VI website lists November 19, 2026, as the coming date and identifies PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two’s latest retrieved product lineup also lists those platforms and the same date.
The timeline has therefore moved through two announced delays, but the latest official material reviewed does not announce a third. The current schedule is November 19, 2026, with digital preload planned for November 12 and preorder materials already available.
A PC version remains unannounced in the official platform listings reviewed for this chronology. Rockstar’s history and Take-Two’s broader comments about PC may encourage expectations, but they do not change the confirmed platform list. The same principle applies to GTA VI Online, post-launch content and any additional game editions: those subjects should not be added to a confirmed timeline without a direct announcement.
The cleanest summary is that Rockstar confirmed active development in February 2022, announced the first trailer in November 2023, revealed Leonida and the original 2025 window in December 2023, delayed the game to May 26, 2026, in May 2025, moved it again to November 19, 2026, in November 2025, and entered the final preorder and marketing phase during 2026.
- Current scheduled launch: November 19, 2026.
- Current officially listed platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Digital preload date: November 12, 2026.
- No official PC version is listed in the reviewed launch materials.
- No official GTA VI Online launch plan or post-launch roadmap is part of this confirmed chronology.
Grand Theft Auto VI’s announcement history is a story of gradual disclosure. Rockstar first confirmed development without naming the game, then used its December 2023 trailer to establish Leonida, Vice City, the principal reveal and the original 2025 window.
The schedule subsequently changed twice. The first delay moved the game to May 26, 2026; the second moved it to November 19, 2026. Rockstar and Take-Two have since supported that date with preorder information, edition pricing, preload plans, an extended official showcase and additional launch-related marketing announcements.
For now, November 19, 2026, is the date to track. Everything beyond the officially listed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S launch plan—including a PC version, online timing and post-launch support—remains outside the confirmed timeline unless Rockstar or Take-Two says otherwise.
