RuneScape’s next few years are taking shape on several fronts at once. RuneFest 2026 brought confirmation that a new massively multiplayer online game is in development, a December relaunch initiative for the current RuneScape game, a newly announced animated adaptation, and extensive content plans for both Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
The sheer spread of projects is notable. Rather than treating the franchise as a single game with a single update schedule, the plans divide its future among distinct audiences: players looking for a refreshed entry point in RuneScape, Old School players awaiting long-promised regions and high-level challenges, Dragonwilds players receiving a story-led update cadence and mod support, and a prospective audience for a future MMO built with newer technology.
A new RuneScape MMO is officially in development
The biggest long-term reveal is confirmation of another RuneScape MMO, currently referred to internally as RS4. That is a working title rather than an official game name, so “RuneScape 4” should be understood as useful shorthand, not a finalized branding decision.
What is confirmed is that the project is being built in Unreal Engine. A game engine is the technical framework used to build and run a game: it handles foundational systems such as rendering, environments, animation, and other development tools. Saying a game uses Unreal Engine does not, by itself, tell players exactly how it will play, what platforms it will reach, or when it will launch. It does establish that the new MMO is being developed with a modern engine and is intended to use newer technology and design.
That distinction matters because there is currently no release timing, platform list, gameplay breakdown, or business-model detail attached to the project. The announcement is significant confirmation of direction, but not yet a roadmap players can plan around. For now, the teaser serves as a signal that RuneScape’s MMO future is being developed alongside, rather than in place of, its existing games.
An animated RuneScape project is also on the way
A RuneScape animated adaptation has also been announced. The project involves YouTuber Charlie White, known as MoistCr1TiKaL, and production company Lyrical Media.
Specifics remain limited. There is no confirmed format, story focus, release date, or indication of where the adaptation will be available. It is therefore too early to assume whether it will follow a particular questline, era, or group of characters from Gielinor. Still, its announcement places the world of RuneScape in a broader entertainment context at the same time as the games themselves are expanding.
RuneScape Reignited arrives December 2
The nearer-term centerpiece is RuneScape Reignited, launching December 2. It is positioned as a major moment for the 25-year-old game, intended both to give returning players a clearer route back in and to provide existing players with a new competitive and economic starting point.

Reignited includes a Remastered Journey and an Adventure Guide. Based on the announced framing, these features are designed to help players navigate the game’s progression and activities. That is especially relevant to lapsed players: returning to a long-running MMO can mean confronting years of added quests, skills, systems, locations, and objectives. A guided journey is not simply a cosmetic refresh when it helps turn an enormous backlog of possibilities into a more understandable route forward.
The initiative will also begin with a fresh economy and new hi scores. In an MMO, an economy refers to the circulation and exchange of in-game currency and items among players. A fresh economy implies a reset-style environment in which players begin without a mature market already shaped by accumulated wealth and stockpiles. Hi scores are public rankings, giving participants a measurable way to compete through progression or other tracked accomplishments.
Full Reignited Access will be available without membership from December 2 through December 12. That window creates a defined opportunity for curious newcomers and former players to examine the new starting conditions without immediately needing membership. It does not establish what happens after that period, so players should avoid reading broader access terms into the announcement.
A long-requested Plugin API is also due to launch in October, with players receiving early access before its official release. API is short for application programming interface: in this setting, it is a way for external tools or plugins to interact with supported game systems. The practical importance is potential customization and utility, but the announcement does not spell out the final plugin rules, features, or individual creations that will be available. Those details will determine how meaningful the system is in practice.
RuneScape’s 2027 stories and systems
The Reignited announcement came with what has been described as the game’s largest roadmap to date. Its 2027 content is organized into three story arcs connected to established plotlines:
- Hoard of Dragons, scheduled for January, continues from the Dragon Slayer quest.
- City of Gnomes continues the longstanding gnome storyline.
- Secrets of Karamja introduces a new endgame raid.
For players unfamiliar with MMO terminology, an endgame raid is generally a major challenge intended for characters that have reached advanced progression. The name alone does not confirm team size, mechanics, loot, or difficulty structure, but it identifies Secrets of Karamja as content aimed beyond the earliest stages of play.
The roadmap also names an Agility rework, additional skilling and solo bosses, area expansions, and a new Grandmaster Quest. A rework means substantial revision to an existing system, while skilling refers to non-combat progression activities. A solo boss is a high-level encounter built for an individual player rather than a group. None of these labels provide enough detail to judge balance or scope yet, but together they point to a roadmap that is not restricted to story additions alone.
Old School RuneScape: Menaphos, raids, and Hardcore Worlds
Old School RuneScape received its own updated plan, with immediate dates and longer-range projects sharing the bill. The Golden Gates to Menaphos are set to open after 20 years, accompanied by a group of player-requested additions. The importance of that statement is less about a single feature list—which has not been detailed here—than the arrival of a place players have waited a long time to see opened.
Two dated additions follow quickly:
- The Fractured Archive, a new endgame raid, launches October 20.
- Hardcore Worlds launches November 4.
Beyond those releases, 2027 plans include a continuation of the Fairytale questline, Quest Month, Dungeons of Gielinor, a Mining and Smithing rework, Chosen Commander, and the Tower of Xorphoros. The roadmap combines new challenge content with quest continuation and core-skill revision, giving Old School players several different kinds of updates to track rather than a single seasonal headline.
As with the other roadmaps, the named projects establish intent but leave crucial details unanswered: how the Mining and Smithing changes will work, what Hardcore Worlds’ rules will be, and what shape the new dungeons and quest content will take. Those are questions for later updates, not gaps that can be resolved from the names alone.
Dragonwilds begins the Blood Crystal Saga in December
RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the more recently released spinoff, will start a new story sequence with December’s Luminance update. Luminance acts as a prelude to the 2027 Blood Crystal Saga and brings Elves into Dragonwilds. It also adds elven-themed customization for player characters and buildings, plus the Prayer skill.
That mix gives the update three different roles. The Elves and associated customization expand the game’s setting and visual options; building customization gives that theme a presence in player-made spaces; and Prayer adds a named skill to the game’s progression structure. The announcement does not detail how Prayer functions, so its combat, exploration, or resource implications remain unknown.
The Blood Crystal Saga begins in early 2027 with Song of Rebellion. Planned additions include Moss Giants, Kebbits, and Implings; the Hunter skill; new areas, quests, and gear; and house decorations inspired by Prifddinas. The reference to Prifddinas links the new material to a recognizable RuneScape city, while the listed creatures and skill indicate that the update is intended to expand both encounters and activities.
Dragonwilds is planned to receive quarterly updates that can add skills including Hunter and Slayer, alongside monthly releases for side quests, weapons, decorations, and quality-of-life improvements. Quality of life is the usual term for changes that improve usability or reduce friction rather than necessarily adding an entirely new destination or storyline.
Official modding is planned for 2027
One of Dragonwilds’ most consequential future systems is official modding, planned for 2027 through a partnership with CurseForge. The announced tools include dedicated creation tools and an in-game mod browser and installer. Importantly, the feature is planned across all platforms, including console.
Modding allows players and creators to make additions or alterations for a game within the boundaries supported by its tools and policies. The key word here is official: rather than relying only on community distribution outside the game, Dragonwilds is set to provide a built-in way to discover and install mods. The final effect will depend on the creation tools, moderation approach, and the kinds of mods permitted, none of which have been fully outlined. But in-game discovery and installation could make community-made content substantially easier to access.
What players can reasonably take from RuneFest 2026
The announcements offer firm dates for several near-term releases—October 20 for Old School RuneScape’s Fractured Archive, November 4 for Hardcore Worlds, and December 2 for RuneScape Reignited—while keeping the biggest future projects deliberately broad. The new MMO has no release window. The animated adaptation has no date or format. Much of the 2027 material has names and general direction, not feature-complete detail.
That is not a shortage of news so much as a clear split between immediate plans and longer development. Reignited is the most concrete invitation for returning RuneScape players, particularly during its December 2–12 no-membership access period. Old School players have two imminent dated releases and a larger 2027 slate. Dragonwilds players have a December narrative prelude, an early-2027 saga start, and an eventual official-mod support plan. And, in the background, RS4 suggests the franchise is preparing another major MMO chapter without asking existing communities to stop where they are.
