Mini PCs have become increasingly tempting for people who want a clean desk, a quiet work machine and a compact way into PC gaming without building a conventional tower. Geekom’s A9 Max sits squarely in that overlap, albeit with a clear priority: this is an AI-minded productivity computer first, with integrated Radeon graphics that can play games under the right conditions.
The 2026 Geekom A9 Max is listed at $1,599 / £1,799 in its current configuration. Inside its silver, rounded square chassis are AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 470, Radeon 890M integrated graphics, 32GB of DDR5 memory and a 2TB SSD. Those are robust specifications for a machine measuring only 135mm by 132mm by 46.9mm. But the small enclosure does not magically turn integrated graphics into a dedicated GPU, and the numbers reported for demanding games make that distinction important.
A compact PC built around AI and work
The Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 brings more than its CPU cores and Radeon 890M graphics to the table. AMD rates its XDNA 2 neural processing unit at up to 55 TOPS, with total platform AI acceleration quoted at up to 86 TOPS. That is the A9 Max’s most obvious mission statement: local AI workloads, media work, rendering tasks and demanding everyday productivity are all central to its design.
That framing matters when considering the Radeon 890M. It shares system memory rather than having a dedicated pool of video memory, and it is not meant to compete directly with current RTX 50-series desktop hardware or gaming laptops with discrete GPUs. The A9 Max can certainly run games, but purchasers looking primarily for high-detail, native-resolution performance need to set expectations much lower than the price might initially suggest.
There is only one current A9 Max configuration described here, whereas the prior Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 version remains available through some retailers. It is a preceding model rather than a second configuration of the 2026 unit. That older machine becomes significant later, because its dual-channel memory arrangement can provide a better baseline for games straight from the box.
Cyberpunk 2077 shows both the promise and the catch
In benchmark reporting, the A9 Max fell short of 60 frames per second in Full HD at medium and high presets without FSR adjustments. Total War: Three Kingdoms reached an average of 48fps at 1080p medium, while Cyberpunk 2077 averaged 51fps at the same broad settings. Those figures are not disastrous for a machine whose primary role is productivity, but they are not a reliable recipe for the smooth 60fps experience many players expect from a $1,599 PC purchase.
The visual compromises are as meaningful as the averages. At these more strenuous settings, the system was reported to show texture hitches, graphical oddities, jagged geometry, flickering and occasional haziness. A frame-rate counter can be an overly generous little goblin: it may celebrate a respectable average while the image is busy having a minor existential crisis.
AMD FSR is therefore not an optional flourish for modern, demanding games on this mini PC. It is a major part of the proposition. With FSR enabled, Cyberpunk 2077 reportedly cleared a 60fps average at high settings and 1080p. At 1440p, reducing the preset to medium allowed the machine to approach that same territory. Cyberpunk 2077 was also the only title in the benchmark selection able to begin the QHD test run, which underlines how ambitious 1440p is for the integrated GPU.

The A9 Max can produce playable results in big-budget games, but its most encouraging figures rely on upscaling and frame-generation technology rather than native rendering muscle.
Players who prefer to avoid generated frames or aggressive upscaling will get the most agreeable experience from lighter games, older releases and less demanding genres. Islanders, Restory, Oxenfree 2 and Samorost 3 were all reported to run without issue. Across a broader testing selection without FSR assistance, low settings were generally required to get close to 60fps.
That does not make the A9 Max useless as a games machine. It makes it a specific kind of games machine: one best suited to a mixed library, sensible presets and a user who regards FSR as a useful tool rather than forbidden wizardry. Benchmark context: closer to entry-level discrete graphics
In 3DMark’s Steel Nomad Lite result, the Radeon 890M’s position was characterized as broadly comparable to a GTX 1650 or a 45W RTX 2050. The comparison comes with a substantial caveat: those discrete GPUs do not bring the same modern upscaling and frame-generation options. Still, it is useful context for anyone tempted to read “Radeon 890M” as a replacement for a mainstream dedicated laptop GPU.
Productivity comparisons also show an interesting split. The A9 Max trailed an Apple M5 Pro-equipped Mac mini in reported Geekbench 7 outcomes; the higher-end Mac mini surpassed 3,600 in single-core and 30,000 in multi-core performance. The A9 Max reportedly beat the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 392 in single-core work, where the latter posted 2,445, but remained behind its 20,906 multi-core result. Raw benchmark comparisons do not fully reflect the A9 Max’s NPU-oriented goals, yet they reinforce that buyers should identify their actual bottleneck before paying for an AI-focused compact system.
Connectivity is a serious strength
Where the A9 Max looks unusually well equipped is I/O. Its front panel offers three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, another USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port with always-on charging, and a 3.5mm audio jack. That is enough nearby connectivity for typical desk equipment such as a keyboard receiver, mouse receiver, headset and a charging cable, without immediately requiring a hub.

Geekom includes upgrade paths for both memory and storage. The A9 Max supports up to 128GB of RAM and up to 8TB of SSD capacity. That helps its case as a long-lived productivity system, especially for users with growing project files or local AI requirements. It is worth remembering, however, that upgrades add cost and that component pricing can fluctuate sharply.
The newer A9 Max uses single-channel memory in the included setup, reportedly chosen to simplify upgrading. The older Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 version uses dual-channel memory and may therefore offer stronger gaming behavior immediately. At around $1,299 and often lower, that older model is approximately $300 below the newer system’s stated price. The newer HX 470 model’s advantage is the possibility of pairing its improved processing and AI performance with a future dual-channel memory upgrade, though that is a different proposition from getting optimal gaming performance on day one.
Cooling is handled by Geekom’s IceBlast 3.0 setup, incorporating a copper heatsink, two copper heat pipes and larger fan blades. The reported result was restrained fan noise and stable thermal behavior during testing. In a mini PC, that is not a trivial accomplishment; a tiny box that sounds like it is preparing for liftoff can spoil even the neatest desk arrangement.
Who should consider the Geekom A9 Max?
The A9 Max makes the strongest case for professionals and power users who want a small, tidy computer for AI-assisted workloads, content work and multi-display productivity, with flexible memory and storage expansion available later. Its compact silver design, airflow-focused side panels and included VESA mounting plate strengthen that role.
Gaming is a welcome secondary capability rather than the reason to buy it. At $1,599, buyers focused chiefly on 1080p game performance may find gaming laptops with RTX 5060 graphics, and occasionally RTX 5070 systems on sale, that deliver stronger results in modern games. Those laptops may not match the A9 Max’s desktop-friendly port selection, upgrade potential or unobtrusive footprint, but dedicated graphics remain the more direct route to higher settings and steadier native-resolution frame rates.
In short, the Geekom A9 Max is not a tiny gaming powerhouse pretending to be a workstation. It is a capable workstation that can join the party when games are on the menu, provided FSR is invited too.
