Mild story and area spoilers follow.
Phantom Blade Zero’s Whence the Weeping is designed to feel unresolved for a long stretch of the game. Soul first encounters the mystery in Weeping Creek Valley, where the sound of a woman crying can be heard without any obvious person, room, or object to investigate. The quest objective asks players to find the source, but the important thing to know is that there is no immediate solution in the valley.
That is not a missed interaction, a hidden route you need to brute-force, or an early-game puzzle with a cryptic trick. It is a long-term story thread. Progress comes chiefly through advancing the main path until new characters, regions, and a key instrument turn the vague sound into a concrete destination.
The short version is simple: continue through Crimson Forest, speak thoroughly with Jewel in the Village of Lu, progress through Pangzhen, collect the three Illusory Pipa pieces, have Myst repair the instrument, and use it at the Meigu Lake barrier. Beyond that barrier lies the final stretch of the quest.
Whence the Weeping walkthrough at a glance
- Hear the crying in Weeping Creek Valley and accept the Whence the Weeping quest.
- Do not spend time trying to locate a physical source in the creek: continue onward to Crimson Forest.
- Advance through Crimson Forest and defeat the region’s final boss to open the route to the Village of Lu.
- In the Village of Lu, meet Jewel and exhaust her dialogue. Make sure to select the topic about faint weeping.
- Use that conversation to learn about the Illusory Pipa and the Chord, the figure apparently tied to the crying.
- Reach Pangzhen, meet Myst, and defeat Pangzhen’s final boss to gain access toward Meigu Lake.
- Find all three pieces of the Illusory Pipa.
- Return to Myst and have the pipa repaired.
- Take the restored pipa to the barrier in Meigu Lake and use it to remove the obstruction.
- Enter the newly accessible area and defeat its final boss to complete Whence the Weeping.
The early objective is intentionally misleading
The biggest potential snag comes immediately after picking up the quest. The wording points Soul toward the source of the sound, which naturally invites a thorough sweep of Weeping Creek Valley. Yet the quest does not provide that answer there. The correct response is simply to continue through the creek and into Crimson Forest.
That distinction matters because it changes how players should treat the quest in their journal. Whence the Weeping is not an active local investigation during its opening phase. It is better understood as a narrative breadcrumb: an unresolved detail introduced early, then clarified by later story progress. A breadcrumb in this sense is a clue that establishes a future objective without giving the player all of the tools or information needed to resolve it immediately.
Practically, that means there is no reason to delay the main story while repeatedly searching the starting area for the crying woman. Continue through Crimson Forest as normal. The story will supply additional context, and the quest’s next meaningful checkpoint does not arrive until the Village of Lu.
Crimson Forest: keep following the main route
Crimson Forest develops the mystery while keeping the player on the core campaign path. More information about the weeping emerges as the main quest proceeds, but this stage does not require a special detour for Whence the Weeping. Reaching and defeating the area’s final boss is the key progression requirement.

Once that boss is beaten, Soul can move on to the Village of Lu. This is an important structural point for anyone checking whether the quest has stalled: if you are still in Crimson Forest, the way forward is campaign progress rather than a separate side-quest hunt.
Players can still explore Weeping Creek Valley for its other activities and discoveries, including the cell key and Flesh Lily, but those are separate from the completion path for Whence the Weeping. They should not be mistaken for required components of the crying woman mystery.
Village of Lu: speak to Jewel until every topic is exhausted
The first major quest-specific interaction occurs in the Village of Lu with Jewel. Speak with her and work through all available dialogue choices. The especially important subject is the one concerning faint weeping.
That conversation gives the mystery its needed direction. Jewel identifies the Illusory Pipa as relevant and points toward the Chord, who appears to be the source of the weeping and may be in the northern mountains. The pipa is a traditional plucked instrument; within this quest, the Illusory Pipa functions as more than a story detail, becoming the item necessary to open the way later in Meigu Lake.
“Exhaust dialogue” means continuing to select conversation options until Jewel has no new relevant response. This is worth doing even if one line seems to give the immediate answer. The quest’s information is specifically tied to the faint-weeping topic, so leaving the conversation early can make the next objective feel inexplicably vague.
There is a useful general lesson here for progression-heavy RPG and action-adventure quests: when a named NPC appears after a long period without updates, fully clearing their dialogue is often the intended handoff between an old mystery and its next playable objective. Pangzhen and Myst: opening the route to Meigu Lake
After the Village of Lu conversation, continue until Soul reaches Pangzhen. There, meet Myst. The quest still cannot be finished at this point, because the Illusory Pipa has yet to be restored and the route to the next region remains gated.
Defeat Pangzhen’s final boss to unlock the way into the Meigu Lake region. This is another campaign-gated stage rather than a separate combat challenge that can be started at any time. If Meigu Lake is unavailable, the immediate requirement is to finish Pangzhen’s main regional progression.
With the route opened, the Whence the Weeping objective becomes much more tangible: locate the missing components of the Illusory Pipa. The quest requires three pieces in total. All three must be obtained before the instrument can serve its purpose.
Find the three Illusory Pipa pieces and repair the instrument
Collecting the pieces alone is not the final step. Once all three are in hand, return to Myst so the Illusory Pipa can be repaired. This repair step is essential: an incomplete instrument cannot be used at the barrier.
It is helpful to separate the quest into two kinds of gate. The first is a story gate, where new regions and conversations become available only after campaign bosses are defeated. The second is an item gate, where access beyond a specific obstruction depends on carrying the correct completed tool. Whence the Weeping uses both. The plot carries Soul from the creek to Meigu Lake, while the restored pipa is what makes the final sealed route passable.
If you have found pipa components but nothing seems to change, do not assume another piece is necessarily missing. Check whether you have visited Myst after collecting all three. The quest requires the repair interaction before the barrier can be removed.
Use the pipa at the Meigu Lake barrier
With the Illusory Pipa restored, travel to the barrier in Meigu Lake. Use the pipa there to bring the barrier down. This is the moment when the long-running clue from Weeping Creek Valley finally becomes a route forward rather than just an unsettling sound.
Enter the area beyond the former barrier and continue to its final boss. Defeating that boss completes Whence the Weeping.
The available steps do not identify a separate reward for completion, so it is best not to expect a particular item, weapon, or unlock unless the game itself presents one. What is clear is the quest’s endpoint: access the newly opened region and defeat its final boss.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Still searching Weeping Creek Valley? Stop looking for a hidden crying NPC there and continue toward Crimson Forest.
- No clear task after Crimson Forest? Defeat the region’s final boss and proceed to the Village of Lu.
- The quest still feels vague in the Village of Lu? Speak to Jewel again and exhaust every dialogue option, especially “faint weeping.”
- Cannot reach Meigu Lake? Meet Myst in Pangzhen and defeat Pangzhen’s final boss.
- The Meigu Lake barrier remains closed? Confirm that all three Illusory Pipa pieces have been collected and that Myst has repaired the instrument.
- Past the barrier but no completion notice? Continue through the accessible area to its final boss and defeat it.
Whence the Weeping rewards patience more than detective work at the start. Follow the main story until Jewel provides the crucial explanation, treat the Illusory Pipa as the quest’s central progression item, and save your serious searching for the point when Meigu Lake and the three pipa pieces are actually available.
