A loader for Extended APA drives
Open PS2 Loader Extended APA is an experimental PlayStation 2 loader for internal HDDs larger than 2 TiB when those drives have been prepared with the matching Extended APA, also called banked APA, layout. The first public hardware-tested release is tagged v1.2.0-Beta-2273-Extended-APA-1 and is based on OPL v1.2.0-Beta-2273.
The build keeps the conventional APA/PFS system and application area in Bank 0, while Bank 1 and later banks are reserved for games. Each full bank represents 2 TiB of 512-byte sectors. The loader translates the relative APA addresses used by upper banks into physical hard-drive locations using each bank’s base address.
Reported validation on a real PlayStation 2
The project reports successful testing on a real PlayStation 2 with a 4 TB internal HDD. FHDB/FreeHDBoot booted, and HDL games in both Bank 0 and Bank 1 were detected and launched during that validation. OPL artwork and configuration remained in Bank 0 while still working with games stored in Bank 1.
Bank 0 remains the conventional APA/PFS system and application area and can also contain optional HDL games. Bank 1 and later banks provide the games-only areas used by the Extended APA layout.
Who should use this build
This is a targeted experimental release rather than a replacement for ordinary Open PS2 Loader installations. The project says it is unnecessary for conventional APA HDDs of 2 TiB or less and recommends official Open PS2 Loader for those configurations. A drive larger than 2 TiB must be prepared by a compatible Extended APA formatter or writer, and official OPL builds will not enumerate the upper APA banks.
The release includes the CI-produced ELF used for the reported hardware test and a SHA-256 checksum file. The project identifies that ELF with SHA-256 value aa7d6765f88fec8d059ebb4fafc76e75e5cd8f8820e083fec0f45640ed32a244, allowing users provisioning a compatible drive to verify the intended binary. The build is best suited to users who specifically need banked APA support.
