FX’s planned Far Cry television series has added five performers to its first-season ensemble: Brendan Gleeson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hamish Linklater, Sam Spruell and Jamie Demetriou. They join the previously revealed lead and co-creator Rob Mac, alongside Lizzy Caplan and Steve Buscemi.
The casting update adds considerable range to a project that is still deliberately light on story specifics. No character names, plot setup or setting have been disclosed. What is confirmed is the show’s central structural idea: it will use an anthology format, with a different cast and setting in each season, reflecting the approach associated with Ubisoft’s Far Cry game franchise.
That means the new names should not be read as a permanent, multi-season character roster. At this stage, they are attached to season one only, and the roles they will play have not been identified.
The five new Far Cry cast additions
Gleeson arrives with credits including The Banshees of Inisherin and In Bruges. Leigh’s screen work includes The Hateful Eight and FX’s Fargo. Linklater has appeared in Widow’s Bay and Midnight Mass, while Spruell’s listed credits include A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and FX’s Alien: Earth. Demetriou is known for Stath Lets Flats and The Afterparty.
Those credits do not reveal anything definitive about the show’s tone or individual parts, but they do make the lineup notable for its mix of dramatic and comic performers. Gleeson, Leigh, Linklater and Spruell bring backgrounds spanning crime, drama, horror and fantasy projects, while Demetriou’s presence introduces a performer with a strong comedy profile. Whether that variety translates into a season that is grim, satirical, action-focused or something else entirely remains unknown.
For now, the important distinction is between casting and character information. The actors are confirmed to appear; the identities, relationships and narrative function of their characters are not.
What “anthology” means for this adaptation
An anthology is a series format in which a new season can tell a substantially separate story from the last. In this case, FX has indicated that each season of Far Cry will feature a new setting and cast.
In practical terms, the format gives the adaptation room to make season one its own self-contained entry rather than requiring every performer or plotline to continue indefinitely. It also sets expectations that later seasons could change location, characters and dramatic circumstances without treating those shifts as a reboot or a continuity problem.
That is particularly relevant for viewers coming to the project through the games. Rather than promising a one-to-one retelling of a specified title, the announced format signals a TV series built around the franchise’s seasonal flexibility. FX has not said which game, if any, provides the direct basis for the opening season. It has also not identified the season’s time period, location or antagonistic force.
That restraint matters because an adaptation can share a franchise name and broad format without duplicating a particular game’s cast or plot. Until FX, Ubisoft Film & Television, or the creative team provides more detail, claims about specific game characters or settings would be speculation.
Rob Mac and Noah Hawley are leading the project
The series was reported as being set up at FX in November 2025. Rob Mac and Noah Hawley are its creators, with Mac also set to star. Mac will executive produce through More Better Productions.
Hawley will executive produce through 26 Keys under his overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television. Simon Emanuel and Emilia Serrano will also executive produce for 26 Keys. Additional executive producers include Nick Frenkel for 3 Arts; Monica Macer; Peter Calloway; John Campisi; and Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television.
FX Productions is producing the series. That production credit should not be confused with the announced viewing plan: the show is slated to air on FX and Hulu, with Disney+ handling international availability.
The latter point is useful for audiences tracking where the series will land. The confirmed platform plan is FX and Hulu in its stated domestic arrangement, plus Disney+ internationally. No premiere date, episode count or release window has been disclosed in the available details.
Why this casting news is significant, and what it does not settle
An early ensemble announcement often offers the clearest public view of a television project before trailers, synopses and character breakdowns arrive. Here, it confirms that production planning has advanced beyond the initially announced core trio of Mac, Caplan and Buscemi. It also places five established actors into the first season of a videogame adaptation whose actual premise remains private.
But casting alone cannot answer the questions most likely to matter to Far Cry players: which world the season will explore, how closely it will connect to a particular game, who the principal threats and protagonists are, and how much of the experience will be recognizable from the interactive series. None of those answers has been announced.
It is also premature to infer a hierarchy from the list. Mac has been identified as the lead, but FX has not described whether Gleeson, Leigh, Linklater, Spruell or Demetriou will be regulars, guests, allies, adversaries or figures whose importance only becomes apparent across the season. A well-known name does not, by itself, establish a character’s amount of screen time or place in the plot.
Still, the cast does clarify the project’s ambitions as a performance-led television adaptation. The announced group combines actors familiar to audiences through film, prestige drama, genre series and comedy, now working around a season whose setting is intentionally unrevealed. For an anthology, that concentration of talent is also consequential beyond the first run: once season one establishes the show’s template, a subsequent season can refresh the entire on-screen world.
What viewers should watch for next
The next meaningful details will be more specific than another general confirmation that the show is in development. A setting announcement would establish the first season’s world. Character names and a synopsis would reveal whether the series is adapting, remixing or merely taking inspiration from an existing game framework. A premiere window would turn the confirmed FX, Hulu and international Disney+ plans into something audiences can schedule around.
Until then, the reliable picture is straightforward: Far Cry is an FX-produced anthology adaptation co-created by Hawley and Mac; Mac leads the cast; Caplan and Buscemi are already on board; and Gleeson, Leigh, Linklater, Spruell and Demetriou have now joined season one. The story itself remains under wraps.
