Amy Madigan has joined the cast of Paramount+ drama thriller Ascent, adding a key character to a series centered on corporate crises, high-value clients and a family emergency that forces a professional problem-solver into a far more personal fight.

Madigan will play Rachel, a former executive at the fictional Ascent Ventures and the lifelong mentor of Catriona, the character played by Viola Davis. Catriona is described as an elite corporate fixer whose career has made her indispensable to billion-dollar clients. When her estranged daughter is in danger, however, Catriona must turn the ruthless abilities that have defined her work toward protecting her own family.

Sam Heughan is also set to star as Conal, a top agent at Ascent Ventures. The newly outlined relationships establish a compact but potentially combustible core: Catriona has an estranged daughter at the center of the danger, a powerful professional world around her, an accomplished agent in Conal, and a mentor whose history inside the company may offer both insight and complications.

What Rachel’s role suggests for Ascent

The available character description is brief, but it places Rachel in a narratively useful position. As a former executive, she has a direct connection to Ascent Ventures without necessarily being bound by its present-day priorities. As Catriona’s lifelong mentor, she also has a relationship that predates the immediate crisis.

That combination matters in a drama about damage control. A mentor character can provide counsel, challenge a protagonist’s decisions or reveal the values that shaped them. Rachel’s former executive position additionally means she may understand the company’s methods, internal culture and institutional pressures from the inside. Those are possibilities suggested by the premise, rather than confirmed plot details; no information has been provided about Rachel’s specific actions, alliances or backstory beyond her professional history and connection to Catriona.

“Corporate fixer” is a useful term to unpack here. In this context, it describes a person hired to contain or manage serious problems for major clients. The work can involve protecting reputations, controlling the fallout from a crisis and finding solutions when the stakes are financial, legal or public. Ascent frames that profession as a source of Catriona’s expertise, but also as a set of skills that may become morally and emotionally complicated when used for a daughter from whom she is estranged.

Likewise, “damage control” is not merely a business-world backdrop in the setup. It is the dramatic engine. Catriona’s job is built around responding to a crisis before it inflicts greater harm on an organization or client. The series transfers that pressure into her private life, where polished professional instincts may not be enough to repair an already-fractured family relationship.

A reunion with creator John Logan

Madigan’s casting reunites her with Ascent creator John Logan. Madigan previously appeared in Logan’s series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. Logan is the new show’s showrunner and an executive producer.

A showrunner is the senior creative leader responsible for guiding a television series at the production level. The role commonly encompasses overseeing the writing and maintaining the show’s creative direction, although the precise division of duties can vary from production to production. For viewers, Logan holding both the creator and showrunner titles means the person who originated Ascent is also positioned to lead its ongoing storytelling.

Logan’s film work includes Skyfall and Gladiator. Michael Aguilar, who also worked on Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, is an executive producer. Davis and Julius Tennon executive produce through JuVee Productions, in addition to Davis starring as Catriona. Paramount Television Studios is behind the series.

Executive producer is a broad television credit that can cover creative, business and production responsibilities. It does not, on its own, define precisely what any one producer does day to day. In Ascent, the announced credits clearly identify Logan as showrunner while also placing Davis, Tennon and Aguilar among the executive producers.

The stakes are personal as well as professional

The premise’s most important tension is the collision between Catriona’s professional competence and her personal vulnerability. She has built a career on being indispensable to extremely wealthy clients, presumably by remaining controlled and effective amid difficult situations. The danger facing her daughter changes the calculation: Catriona is no longer only managing another party’s risk.

That setup gives the title company, Ascent Ventures, a central function beyond simply providing a workplace. It is the environment that has shaped Catriona, employed Conal and once counted Rachel among its executives. Rachel’s connection to the organization could make her an especially important lens on the firm’s past and its influence over Catriona. Still, audiences will need to wait for more details before drawing conclusions about whether the company itself is a source of help, danger or both.

The casting also gives Ascent a veteran performer in a role designed around history. Rachel is not presented as a newly arrived figure; her ties to Catriona extend across a lifetime. That description creates room for a relationship with accumulated trust, unresolved disagreements or hard-earned knowledge. It also makes the character distinct from an ordinary corporate colleague, since Rachel’s influence appears to reach beyond the professional sphere.

Madigan’s screen work and upcoming projects

Madigan recently won the Academy Award for best supporting actress for her performance as Aunt Gladys in Weapons. Her film credits include Field of Dreams, Twice in a Lifetime, Gone Baby Gone, Uncle Buck, Places in the Heart and Streets of Fire.

Her television work includes a Golden Globe win and an Emmy nomination for Roe Vs. Wade, as well as appearances in Fringe, Grey’s Anatomy, The Laramie Project and Carnivàle. Madigan is also set to appear in the film Sponsor, alongside Jason Segel and John C. Reilly; the limited series All the Sinners Bleed; and Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot.

Her coming X-Files appearance is one of several high-profile television projects on the horizon. For another look at how long-running television franchises can intersect with gaming culture, see our coverage of Walter Koenig’s screen and video-game legacy.

When will Ascent begin production?

Production on Ascent is planned to start in Los Angeles in 2027. No premiere date, episode count or further casting information has been announced in the material available so far.

For now, the confirmed picture is a thriller built around an elite crisis manager facing a crisis she cannot keep at professional distance. Davis leads as Catriona, Heughan plays the high-ranking Ascent Ventures agent Conal, and Madigan enters as Rachel: a former company executive whose lifelong connection to Catriona gives the drama another layer of corporate and personal history.
