Minecraft is preparing to expand beyond its established worlds with The Sift, a new dimension planned for the game’s Java and Bedrock Editions in 2027. The announcement makes this a particularly consequential addition: The End arrived with Minecraft 1.0 in late 2011, and the developers describe The Sift as the first dimension introduced in more than 15 years.

That gap matters because dimensions are more than new scenery in Minecraft. They are distinct worlds with their own atmosphere, terrain, creatures and gameplay expectations. A dimension can change where players travel, what dangers they prepare for and how an adventure unfolds. The Nether and The End have long formed the game’s most recognisable off-world destinations; The Sift is positioned to become the next major space in that lineage.

Details remain deliberately limited, but two locations have been named: the Meadows and the Carapace. The Sift will also contain new mobs, with the unusual promise that these creatures may be either companions or threats. That wording leaves plenty unanswered, including how those roles will work and whether they vary by creature, player action or location. For now, it is a signal that the new dimension’s inhabitants may not fit a simple hostile-versus-passive classification.

A major Minecraft addition, not just another biome

In Minecraft terminology, a biome and a dimension are not interchangeable. A biome is a type of environment within a world, such as a forest or desert. A dimension is a separate realm. The announcement’s references to the Meadows and the Carapace therefore suggest places within The Sift rather than separate new dimensions themselves.

That distinction is important for setting expectations. A new biome can substantially vary exploration while retaining familiar rules. A new dimension has the potential to establish its own structure, environmental logic and risks. Mojang has specifically said there will be new rules to learn in The Sift, though it has not explained those rules yet. Players should not assume new mechanics, progression requirements, crafting materials or travel methods until those details are officially outlined.

Still, the phrasing points to an expansion that is intended to alter the way players approach its world, rather than simply provide additional blocks and landscapes. The announced companion-or-threat mob concept supports that reading: it hints at encounters where observation and adaptation could matter as much as immediate combat.

The Sift has named areas, newly revealed mobs and gameplay changes still to be explained—but its clearest significance is that it will be Minecraft’s first new dimension since The End.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 gets there first

Players wanting an earlier look at The Sift will find it in Minecraft Dungeons 2, the forthcoming sequel to the dungeon-crawler spin-off. It is scheduled to release on September 29, ahead of The Sift’s eventual 2027 arrival in the main Minecraft game.

This rollout means the same named setting will first appear in a different kind of Minecraft experience. Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler, a genre centered on progressing through combat-heavy levels and acquiring gear, rather than the open-ended building and survival format that defines Java and Bedrock Minecraft. That makes Dungeons 2 a useful first window into The Sift’s visual identity and inhabitants, but it does not confirm that each mechanic or encounter will function identically when the dimension reaches the base game.

The announcement only establishes that The Sift will be found in Dungeons 2 first and later arrive in Java and Bedrock Editions. It does not lay out a precise 2027 release date for the base-game update, nor does it detail whether the Meadows, Carapace and revealed mob will transfer in exactly the same form. The sensible reading is that Dungeons 2 will introduce the setting before the main game receives its own implementation.

What the named locations tell us—and what they do not

The two confirmed area names provide a small but intriguing contrast. “Meadows” evokes an open natural environment, while “Carapace” refers to a hard outer shell, commonly associated with creatures such as insects and crustaceans. That contrast could suggest varied scenery and themes within The Sift, but it is not confirmation of terrain layouts, resource types, structures or enemies.

It is also worth separating observation from certainty. A teaser video shared by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma showed The Sift and a new mob. However, a teaser is not a complete feature list. It cannot establish all of the dimension’s regions, rules or systems. The confirmed facts at this stage are the 2027 Java and Bedrock plan, the Meadows and Carapace names, new mobs that can be companions or threats, and gameplay changes described only as new rules to learn.

That restrained detail level is likely to be familiar to Minecraft players who prefer to plan worlds, servers or community projects around updates. There is no practical reason yet to redesign a base or make assumptions about access to The Sift. There is no announced portal recipe, item requirement, survival strategy or progression route. The information is significant, but it is not yet an update guide.

Why the companion-or-threat description stands out

Minecraft’s creatures—usually called mobs—are often understood through straightforward behavior categories. Some attack players, some are generally harmless, and some can provide practical benefits. The Sift’s stated mix of companionship and danger is notable because it draws attention to the relationship between the player and the creature rather than simply its appearance.

The announcement does not define “companion.” It could refer to a creature that follows, helps, accompanies or otherwise interacts positively with a player, but those are possibilities rather than confirmed features. Nor is it known how a threat might be triggered, avoided or overcome. The only firm takeaway is that The Sift’s new mobs are expected to have a more varied role than a single blanket description would imply.

For creative players, that ambiguity leaves room for excitement without a clear building brief. For survival players, it means preparation remains theoretical until the dimension’s systems are explained. And for multiplayer communities, the prospect of new rules raises the possibility of fresh shared discovery when the update arrives—but no server-specific implications have been announced.

2027 will be busy for Minecraft on more than one front

The Sift is not the only Minecraft-related item attached to 2027. A Minecraft World hotel and Escape the Nether coaster are also planned for Chessington in 2027, while the game itself continues to receive additions outside this newly announced dimension.

Before The Sift reaches Java and Bedrock, Minecraft is also set to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27. That version is separate from the dimension announcement, but it reinforces that the game’s platform and content plans will continue moving in parallel. Players should avoid treating the Switch 2 date as a date for The Sift; the dimension is slated for 2027, while the console release is planned for October 27.

For the moment, The Sift is best understood as a long-term expansion with a near-term preview route through Minecraft Dungeons 2. Its arrival will be historic by Minecraft standards because of the long interval since The End, but the exact form of its exploration, creatures and rules is still under wraps. The Meadows, the Carapace and the teaser’s new mob are the first landmarks on a much larger map that has yet to be revealed.
