A new PCSX ReARMed fork for PSVita
PCSX AwO, short for Armed with Octane, has reached its first public release as version v0.5.0. The project is a fork of PCSX ReARMed tailored specifically for PSVita hardware, with its main rendering work derived from Crash Team Racing: High Octane.
Published on October 13, 2026, v0.5.0 is available as a PSVita VPK package and a ZIP archive. The release notes contain only the statement “First Release,” so this build does not come with a detailed list of version-specific fixes or additions. The features below describe the initial release rather than changes from an earlier public version.
Software and High Octane rendering
PCSX AwO includes the ReARMed NEON software rasterizer, with optional 2x internal resolution support. This provides a software-rendering path for users who prefer the project’s ReARMed-based renderer.
The alternative is a hardware-accelerated High Octane renderer, which the project describes as highly performant. It supports the Vita’s native internal resolution and 4x multisample anti-aliasing. With this renderer, games can also use an unstretched 16:9 aspect ratio rather than having the image simply expanded to fill a wider display.
The High Octane renderer includes experimental frame generation for games that natively run at 25 or 30 frames per second. Because the feature is experimental and limited to this renderer, it is best treated as an optional display and timing feature rather than a guaranteed improvement for every game.
Support for several game-image formats
The emulator supports PlayStation software in .bin/.cue, .iso, .img, .chd, .pbp, .m3u and .exe formats. This covers several common ways of storing disc images, including CHD archives, PBP packages and M3U playlists.
Multidisc game support is included as well. That gives users a way to manage titles distributed across multiple discs within the emulator, rather than relying only on single-disc entries. The combination of format support and multidisc handling is useful for organizing a PlayStation library on a handheld-focused setup.
Library presentation and visual effects
Game selection uses 3D disc-cover artwork, giving the library a visual presentation built around browsing instead of a plain filename list. PCSX AwO also supports custom bubble generation for users who want to create Vita-style entries for their emulation setup.
The emulator includes post-processing effects such as CRT, Greyscale, Sepia, Negative, Sharp Bilinear and LCD 3x. These options provide different visual treatments, from display-style effects to sharper filtering, without changing the original game-image format.
Loading and controller features
PCSX AwO includes Turbo CD and CD read-ahead features intended to provide faster loading times in games. These options focus on how the emulator handles data from CD-based software.
The project supports up to four controllers on PSTV or PSVita when used with the MinivitaTV plugin. This enables multiplayer configurations on supported hardware and with the required plugin environment; the four-controller feature is not presented as a general standalone capability for every setup.
Two special controls are documented. Pressing Start and Select together opens the pause menu during emulation. The top-left and top-right areas of the rear touchpad act as L2 and R2, providing those inputs through the Vita’s rear controls.
What the first release establishes
Version v0.5.0 establishes PCSX AwO as a PSVita-focused PCSX ReARMed fork centered on the High Octane renderer, flexible image-format support and a library interface designed for the handheld. Its initial feature set combines rendering options, multisdisc support, CD read-ahead, controller support and configurable visual effects.
Since the published notes identify this only as the first release, there are no earlier-version changes to compare. Future releases can provide a clearer basis for tracking renderer updates, compatibility work and other Vita-focused refinements.
