The Happy Mask Shop quest in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake is a compact Hyrule-wide trading chain with a deceptively useful payoff. At first, Link is simply buying masks and passing them to the NPCs who want them. The four early masks are effectively trade goods, not permanent equipment. Finish the sequence, however, and the shop’s selection changes: the Mask of Truth becomes available alongside three character-themed masks that can produce special NPC reactions.
There is also a financial wrinkle worth planning around. The final sale, the Bunny Hood, does not pay a fixed amount. The recipient fills Link’s wallet completely. That means completing the last handoff after increasing wallet capacity can make the reward substantially more valuable than doing it immediately.
This guide follows the required order, explains the progression gates, and separates the practical reward from the flavor-focused unlocks. If you are also weighing how the remake updates its movement, see our take on Ocarina of Time Remake’s manual jump.
When the Happy Mask Shop opens
You cannot begin the mask sequence as soon as the adventure starts. The Happy Mask Shop opens once Link has opened the passage to Goron City. The Kakariko Village guard involved in opening that route also tells Link that the shop is available, making him both the opening-story contact and the first person in the trade chain.
The Switch 2 version follows the original version’s setup here: opening the Goron City passage is the trigger. Once that condition is met, go to the Happy Mask Shop and begin with the Keaton Mask.
Happy Mask Shop trade order at a glance
- Keaton Mask: Buy for 10 Rupees; give it to the Kakariko Village guard who opened the Goron City passage; receive 15 Rupees.
- Skull Mask: Buy for 20 Rupees; give it to Skull Kid just inside the Lost Woods from Kokiri Village; receive 10 Rupees.
- Spooky Mask: Buy for 30 Rupees; give it to the boy in Kakariko Graveyard during the day; receive 30 Rupees.
- Bunny Hood: Buy for 50 Rupees after obtaining the three Spiritual Stones; give it to the runner in Hyrule Field; receive a full wallet.
The order matters because each transaction unlocks the next step. Do not expect to choose freely among all four initial masks. Treat the shop as a sequential questline: complete the current customer’s delivery, return to the shop, then buy the next available mask.
1. Keaton Mask: return to the Kakariko guard
Purchase the Keaton Mask for 10 Rupees. Its intended recipient is the Kakariko Village guard who opened the passage to Goron City—the same guard whose dialogue signaled that the Happy Mask Shop had opened.
Give him the mask and he pays 15 Rupees. This is a modest 5-Rupee gain, but its real value is progression: it clears the way to continue the shop’s mask sequence.

For navigation, the key is to identify the guard by his story function rather than searching for a generic villager. If he is the person who helped open the Goron City route, he is the Keaton Mask customer.
2. Skull Mask: find Skull Kid in the Lost Woods
After completing the Keaton Mask sale, buy the Skull Mask for 20 Rupees. The recipient is Skull Kid, found by returning to the opening area of Kokiri Village and taking the northern route into the Lost Woods.
The destination is close to the entrance. As soon as Link enters the Lost Woods, go left through the hollow tree trunk. Skull Kid is there, playing music while standing on a log. Speak with him while carrying the Skull Mask to complete the exchange.
This trade is intentionally less profitable than the first. Skull Kid pays only 10 Rupees for a mask that cost 20, creating a 10-Rupee loss. It is still mandatory for the shop sequence, so it is best understood as an entry cost for the later unlocks rather than a deal to avoid.
Skull Mask route checklist
- Buy the Skull Mask for 20 Rupees.
- Return to Kokiri Village’s starting area.
- Enter the Lost Woods via the northern path.
- Immediately take the left route through the hollow trunk.
- Talk to Skull Kid on the log and hand over the mask.
The important practical detail is that no deep Lost Woods navigation is needed for this step. The recipient is available right at the first left-hand branch.
3. Spooky Mask: visit the Graveyard in daylight
Next, purchase the Spooky Mask for 30 Rupees and return once more to Kakariko Village. This time, take the eastern exit leading to the Graveyard. The sale must be done during the day.
In daylight, a boy wanders around the Graveyard. Speak to him with the Spooky Mask equipped for the handoff. He pays 30 Rupees, exactly matching the mask’s purchase price.
Unlike the Skull Mask deal, this exchange neither drains nor grows Link’s funds. The timing requirement is the only complication. If the Graveyard boy is not present, check the time of day rather than assuming the quest has failed or that the wrong area was reached. The needed NPC is specifically available during daytime.
4. Bunny Hood: wait until the three Spiritual Stones are obtained
The Bunny Hood is the fourth and final sale in the initial Happy Mask Shop chain. It costs 50 Rupees, but it has an additional main-story requirement: Link must have obtained all three Spiritual Stones before it can be sold.
Once that condition has been met, take the Bunny Hood to Hyrule Field. The customer is a man who runs in circles while training. He can be handed the hood while he is running, but night offers a more convenient option: he sits beside the road, so Link does not need to chase him to begin the conversation.
Giving him the Bunny Hood fills Link’s wallet to its current maximum. This is not a set number of Rupees. A full wallet means the payment scales with the size of the wallet Link has at the time.
Why wallet capacity matters before the Bunny Hood sale
The Bunny Hood’s reward is the quest’s clearest planning opportunity. A larger wallet creates a larger payment because the runner tops off every open Rupee slot. If Link arrives with a standard or partially upgraded wallet, the same sale produces less total spending power than it would with the greatest available capacity.
That does not mean the sale is missable if completed earlier; it means there is a reason to delay it until wallet expansion has been handled, if maximizing Rupees is the priority. Also avoid arriving with an already full wallet. Since the reward fills the wallet, going in with empty space ensures the transaction has room to deliver its benefit.
- Buy the Bunny Hood for 50 Rupees.
- Make sure the three Spiritual Stones have been obtained.
- Consider expanding wallet capacity before the exchange.
- Spend enough Rupees beforehand to leave space for the refill.
- Find the runner in Hyrule Field, or look for him sitting by the road at night.
The result can make Link exceptionally wealthy relative to the quest’s normal small transactions. It is also a clean example of why not every side objective needs to be completed at the first possible moment: the story gate and wallet-dependent payment reward deliberate timing.
What unlocks after all four masks are delivered
After the Keaton Mask, Skull Mask, Spooky Mask and Bunny Hood have all reached their intended recipients, return to the Happy Mask Shop. Four new masks become available:
- Mask of Truth: Lets Link speak to Gossip Stones while wearing it. Gossip Stones can provide useful information.
- Gerudo Mask: Produces unique dialogue from certain characters.
- Goron Mask: Produces unique dialogue from certain characters.
- Zora Mask: Produces unique dialogue from certain characters.
These are rewards rather than additional links in the mandatory trading chain. The distinction is useful: the first four masks must be bought and surrendered to advance the quest, while the four post-quest masks are the new shop selection opened by finishing it.
The Mask of Truth is the practical unlock
Of the post-quest masks, the Mask of Truth has the most direct gameplay use because it enables conversations with Gossip Stones. In practical terms, that makes it the mask to prioritize if the goal is information that may assist exploration or general progress.
The Gerudo, Goron and Zora masks are different kinds of rewards. Their purpose is special dialogue from some NPCs, making them more about character reactions and lore than a major mechanical advantage. That does not make them meaningless: optional dialogue can add texture to Hyrule and offer details a player would otherwise miss. But players focused strictly on utility should view the Mask of Truth as the key item unlocked by this chain.
Common Happy Mask Shop mistakes to avoid
Trying to start too early: The shop does not open until the Goron City passage has been opened. If the shop is unavailable, that is the first story milestone to check.
Looking too far into the Lost Woods: Skull Kid is reached immediately by taking the left route at the entrance through the hollow trunk. There is no need to roam deeper into the woods for this delivery.
Going to the Graveyard at the wrong time: The Spooky Mask recipient is the wandering boy present during the day. Return in daylight if he is absent.
Attempting the Bunny Hood transaction before its story gate: The three Spiritual Stones are required before the Bunny Hood can be sold.
Taking the Bunny Hood payout with no wallet space: Since the runner fills the wallet, maximize capacity if possible and leave room before making the trade.
Expecting every unlocked mask to change gameplay: The Mask of Truth has the major practical function. The Gerudo, Goron and Zora masks chiefly open distinctive reactions and dialogue.
A short quest with two different rewards
The Happy Mask Shop chain is best approached as two rewards bundled together. First comes the monetary payoff: small early exchanges culminate in the Bunny Hood’s wallet-filling sale. Second comes expanded interaction: the Mask of Truth makes Gossip Stones conversational, while the Gerudo, Goron and Zora masks change how some characters respond to Link.
Complete the trades in order, respect the Graveyard and Spiritual Stone conditions, and save the Bunny Hood exchange for a moment when a full wallet is worth as much as possible. Once the shop’s new stock is unlocked, the Mask of Truth is the standout purchase for players seeking useful information, while the other masks reward curiosity about Hyrule’s NPC dialogue.
