A Windows tool for examining PS3 firmware packages
ps3pupextractor v0.1.0 is a Windows utility for unpacking PlayStation 3 firmware update files. Its purpose is to process the PS3UPDAT.PUP container on a Windows PC, rather than running software on the PS3 itself.
The release was published on October 18, 2026. Its notes do not list version-specific fixes or feature additions, so the documented functionality comes from the accompanying README. The release includes a graphical executable named ps3pupextractor_gui.exe and a ZIP archive.
From PUP containers to extracted files
The utility can perform the complete unpacking pipeline used by the project. It starts by splitting the SCEUF firmware container into sections, verifies the PUP header and section HMACs, and extracts the contents of update_files.tar. It can then unpack the inner SCE packages, process CORE_OS_PACKAGE, and decrypt SELF, SPRX, loader and lv0 files into ELF output.
That distinction matters because a simple container split only exposes the pieces inside a firmware update. The Full explode option goes further by processing the nested packages and converting the documented executable formats into ELF files. Users can leave Full explode disabled when they only need the container contents rather than the complete decryption and extraction pass.
HMAC verification checks the PUP header and each section using the embedded pup-hmac key. The application also includes the cryptographic and archive-handling components it needs, including AES-128-CBC and AES-128-CTR support, zlib and tar processing. According to the project documentation, the firmware key database is built in as well, so the Windows application does not depend on separate key files or an OpenSSL installation.
Optional dev_flash extraction and batch processing
The GUI includes an optional Include dev_flash setting. The project identifies this portion as large, making the checkbox useful when a smaller extraction is preferable or when dev_flash is not needed for the task at hand.
For repeated work, Batch mode accepts a folder and processes each file with a .pup extension into its own output directory. Individual jobs can use an output folder that is automatically based on the input name, while batch processing is intended for handling multiple firmware packages without repeating the file selection process manually.
Using the graphical release
The documented workflow begins by opening ps3pupextractor_gui.exe and selecting or dragging a PS3UPDAT.PUP file into the application. The output location can then be chosen, with the interface offering a name based on the source file followed by _extracted. Users select Full explode when they want the deeper package and executable processing, optionally enable Include dev_flash, and start the extraction.
The project also documents a command-line container splitter in source form as ps3pupextractor.c. That component is separate from the ready-made graphical Windows executable: the GUI release is intended for direct use, while the C file is available for users who want to build the container-splitting utility themselves.
Designed as self-contained reverse-engineering tooling
ps3pupextractor is focused on firmware owned by the user and on homebrew or reverse-engineering work around PS3 firmware formats. Its implementation reproduces the full pupexplode-style pipeline associated with fail0verflow’s ps3tools, including PUP splitting, SCE package handling, CORE_OS_PACKAGE processing and SELF conversion.
The project credits the original ps3tools format logic and public PS3 key collections, and it is licensed under the GNU GPL v2. The README describes the Windows application as running on the .NET Framework 4.x included with Windows.
