Game updates are now managed inside the emulator

ARMSX3 0.9.8 adds an Install Package tab under the game library’s Game updates section. The Android PlayStation 3 emulator can check Sony’s official servers for available updates, show each title’s update status and install selected packages in sequence.

The update manager supports titles with multiple patch steps, lets users choose a specific version and can reinstall or remove an installed update. Selecting an older version removes the current update first. Games recompile their PPU and SPU code after an update is installed, so that process is part of the normal update workflow. Controller navigation is supported, and games outside the library can be searched by title ID.

Adreno stability and graphics rendering improve

The release fixes an Adreno GPU failure that could terminate some games with VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST after several minutes or at a repeatable point during startup. The notes specifically report that Watch Dogs can now progress beyond a crash during a new game on an Odin 3 using a Snapdragon 8 Elite and Turnip Gen 8 V35; the project says the change may benefit other games as well.

ARMSX3 also incorporates 46 upstream RPCS3 commits, including a substantial programmable-blending update for the PlayStation 3’s RSX graphics system and Vulkan. The changes address blending order, signed modes, blend constants, RGB565 byte order, variable target masks and MSAA targets. Reported affected areas include the Jak and Dexter collection, lighting in LittleBigPlanet Karting and refraction effects in Infamous 1 and 2.

Cleaner saves and more flexible library management

Savestate detection now removes corrupted states left behind by crashes or low-memory termination during startup. These damaged files could previously remain hidden while taking substantially more space than a completed save.

The library can use multiple ROM folders, making it possible to keep games on internal storage and an SD card together. A game’s long-press menu can clear only that title’s PPU, SPU and shader caches rather than wiping caches for every game. The information view now lists DLC and displays installed update versions before a game has been launched.

Frontend support also adds the --es title_id command format, allowing a frontend to start games installed inside the emulator’s own storage by title ID.

Android builds and documented requirements

The release was published as ARMSX3 0.9.8 on September 12, 2026, with APK builds for armv8.2 targets using SDK 30, SDK 33 and SDK 35, plus a legacy armv8.1 build using SDK 30. ARMSX3 emulates PlayStation 3 software on Android rather than running software on the original console.

Running the emulator requires PlayStation 3 firmware, which is not included.
