Faster downloads, startup, and recovery

VitaDB Downloader 2.8 focuses on reducing the time spent waiting. The PSVita and PlayStation TV homebrew client now uses optimized SSL cryptographic processing and tuned download buffers. The project says these changes can make downloads up to twice as fast, although actual results will depend on connection and server conditions.

Startup has also been substantially optimized. Work in frequently used code paths and caching for repeated calculations are intended to shorten boot times, while improved error handling and retry behavior should make downloads more resilient on unstable connections. Together, these changes target both startup delays and interruptions during downloads.

Certified reviews become part of app discovery

Version 2.8 adds a View Certified Reviews option to the Manage submenu for applications that have at least one certified review. A certified review score is also shown directly in the application list, with an icon and score displayed beside the app name. This lets users see review information while browsing rather than opening each entry individually.

A new Unreviewed Apps filter can hide or show applications without certified reviews. The update also adjusts the AI Assisted Apps filter so that Vibecoded Apps are no longer hidden when that filter is disabled. The Vibecoded Apps icon has been replaced with a robot icon, making that category easier to distinguish in the list.

Smoother lists and faster image loading

The application list receives several rendering and loading improvements. CPU culling has been added to the Dear ImGui renderer, reducing work for elements that do not need to be drawn and targeting better application framerate.

Fast scrolling should also be smoother. Icons can now load asynchronously, and a subset of icons is cached to reduce repeated loading while moving through the catalog. Screenshots and icons use single I/O reads instead of many smaller buffered reads, improving image-loading behavior across browsing and app details. The release also updates the project to the latest vitaGL commit.

A homebrew catalog and installer for PSVita and PSTV

VitaDB Downloader is the official PSVita and PlayStation TV client for VitaDB, a database of homebrew software for those consoles. It can search by author or homebrew name, filter by category, sort entries using options such as newest, oldest, download count, and alphabetical order, and display application metadata.

The client supports both PSVita and PSP homebrew listings, as well as themes. Users can view available screenshots and video trailers, track whether installed applications are current, and choose whether to install a VPK with its data files or only the VPK when existing data does not need to be downloaded again. The software also offers an optional background daemon that checks for installed homebrew updates at console boot and hourly afterward, then sends notifications when updates are found.

The interface supports favorites, customizable themes, background music, and static or animated backgrounds. Themes can be downloaded and managed from within the application, including single-theme installation and shuffled theme sets. A low-storage design keeps screenshots available on demand and stores app icons locally, with the README stating that the icon cache uses less than 10 MB.

What changed before version 2.8

The preceding 2.7 update added clearer separators between filter groups, reduced memory usage, improved handling of nightly-build data downloads, and introduced Square-button favorite toggling. It also fixed a rare stack-overflow crash, selection loss after installation, and list alignment issues.

Earlier releases added stackable PSVita and PSP filters, cached filter results, separate indicators for Vibecoded and AI-assisted apps, Game Score metadata for supported ports, and additional sorting options. The project has also expanded its installer and management tools over time with cancellation support, cleanup after failed installations, requirements information, changelog access, trailer playback, favorites, and application uninstalling.

These earlier features remain the context for the 2.8 improvements: the update does not replace VitaDB Downloader’s catalog and installation role, but makes its central browsing, downloading, and app-discovery workflows faster and more informative.
