Assetto Corsa EVO’s 0.10 update will arrive on December 9, 2026, bringing an open-world Free Roam experience to the Early Access driving simulator. The new mode is set in a portion of Germany’s Eifel region and includes the Nürburgring Nordschleife, giving players a broader place to drive than a conventional closed-circuit session.

Free Roam is built around a 1:1-scale recreation of selected Eifel districts. That phrase matters: it means the playable landscape is intended to reflect real-world dimensions rather than simply evoke the region’s look and road character. The initial area includes villages, local roads and regional landmarks, all placed using real-world scale data.

For a series identified closely with circuit driving, the update shifts some attention from getting a perfect lap to choosing where to go. There will still be a famous circuit at the center of the map, but the roads around it are part of the proposition rather than background scenery.

What the 0.10 Free Roam update includes

The Eifel map will contain roads, country routes and off-road paths. It will also support dynamic weather, a day-and-night cycle and AI-driven road traffic. Optional activities, including Time Attack events, will be integrated into the open world.

  • Location: selected areas of Germany’s Eifel region, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
  • Scale: a 1:1 recreation of the selected districts using real-world scale data.
  • Road types: public-style roads, country routes and off-road paths.
  • Conditions: dynamic weather and changing time of day.
  • Traffic: AI-controlled vehicles on the road network.
  • Activities: optional open-world Time Attack events.
  • Future plans: the Free Roam map is intended to expand in later updates.

The announcement does not define the full eventual size of the map, identify future expansion areas, or detail every activity that will be available. Those omissions are worth keeping in mind. “Expanded in future updates” establishes a direction, not a timetable or a complete list of destinations.

Why the Eifel is a natural setting

The Nürburgring Nordschleife gives the Free Roam area an obvious anchor. Instead of treating the circuit as an isolated track selection, the update places it within a regional driving environment of nearby villages and connecting roads. That approach could make the process of arriving at, leaving or simply orbiting the Nordschleife part of the simulation’s rhythm.

It also creates room for different uses of the same vehicle. A player may choose a country route for a less formal drive, run a Time Attack event when they want a defined target, or navigate through traffic and changing conditions. None of those possibilities inherently replaces circuit racing; they widen the context around it.

Time Attack generally refers to a timed driving challenge in which the aim is to set the quickest run. In this update, those events are described as optional and integrated into the world. That wording suggests they are activities players can encounter or select within Free Roam rather than a separate requirement of every drive, though the precise event structure has not been detailed.

Weather, daylight and traffic: more than visual atmosphere

Dynamic weather and day/night cycles are frequently discussed as presentation features, but their practical importance in a driving simulation is the potential change in visibility and the overall character of a route. The announcement confirms that these systems are supported in Free Roam, without specifying weather types, transition speed, presets or how individual activities will handle conditions.

AI-driven road traffic is another meaningful distinction between an open-road space and an empty test route. Traffic can make ordinary road driving feel more lived-in, while asking the driver to share space rather than focus exclusively on an ideal racing line. At the same time, the announcement does not state traffic density, behavior rules, collision settings or whether players will be able to adjust those options. Those are implementation questions for the update itself.

The inclusion of off-road paths should likewise be read carefully. It confirms that the map has routes beyond paved roads, but it does not establish which vehicles are suited to them or what kinds of driving challenges they will support. The useful takeaway is simply that the Free Roam environment is planned as a varied regional landscape rather than a single connected set of tarmac lanes.

A new kind of session for Assetto Corsa EVO

Open-world driving changes the basic starting point of a session. On a traditional circuit, the destination is normally fixed: select a layout, set conditions and drive laps. In Free Roam, the route itself can become the decision. Players can travel between landmarks, seek out particular road types, or use the wider environment as a place to practice vehicle control away from a formal event.

That does not mean the update has been positioned as a role-playing world, a campaign or a substitute for competition. The confirmed features are an explorable area, real-scale regional recreation, environmental systems, traffic and optional activities. Anything beyond that—such as progression systems, multiplayer-specific rules or detailed custom-event tools—has not been established here.

The measured framing is especially important while Assetto Corsa EVO remains in Early Access on Steam. Early Access indicates that the game is still in active development, and the stated plan to grow the map reinforces that the December release is the first playable Free Roam area rather than a final geographic endpoint.

What to watch when the update arrives

The headline feature is easy to understand: drive around a real-scale piece of the Eifel with the Nordschleife nearby. The more revealing details will be how the individual systems work together. Does traffic meaningfully shape a casual road drive? How much does changing weather affect the feel of a route? How are Time Attack events presented within the map? And how much of the region is practical to explore from the outset?

For players who enjoy transport and road-focused driving games, the move toward an explorable region may be of particular interest. Other driving games are also experimenting with wider maps and less restrictive session structures, as seen with the Road Truckers: New Beginning demo’s open first map. Assetto Corsa EVO’s stated emphasis, however, is its own Eifel recreation and sim-racing foundation.

Before launch, visitors to Sim Racing Expo in Frankfurt can try the Free Roam experience at the Assetto Corsa booth in Hall 12, stands G18–20. The event runs from October 16 through October 18, 2026.

For everyone else, December 9 is the key date. Version 0.10 will be the moment Assetto Corsa EVO adds its first Free Roam territory—and begins the longer process of expanding that open-world driving map in subsequent updates.
