About the movie
Characters: Richard Jenkins, a wayward schoolboy; Philip Burton, his teacher and mentor; and landlady Ma Smith. Situation: Port Talbot, 1942, where Richard—son of a miner—faces family hardship, the pressures of war, and personal ambition. Philip spots Richard’s natural talent and, with strict tutelage and Ma Smith’s kindness, guides him toward a career in acting that could make him one of the greatest actors the world has ever known. Central conflict: the burden of Richard’s past threatens to stop his rise.
