About the movie
Jean Valjean (played by Vincent Lindon) is released after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread and assumes a new identity to become a respected dignitary. He promises Fantine, a dying factory worker, to rescue and protect her daughter Cosette, who is being mistreated by the Thénardier family, and raises Cosette as his own. Pursued relentlessly by Inspector Javert amid social unrest in France, the lives of Valjean, Cosette, her lover Marius, and Javert become intertwined in revolutionary Paris as Valjean seeks redemption and a safer future for Cosette.
