About the movie
Characters: seventeen-year-old Jasper Murphy; the steer calf Henry he raised; his bereaved grandparents; three rowdy men; and Samantha, an animal rights lawyer. Situation: after the deaths of Jasper’s mother and sister, his grandparents insist he sell Henry and move to Boston, so Jasper flees to a secluded campsite to stay with the steer. Central conflict: when the men attack Henry, Jasper fatally shoots one with a rifle, and Samantha then argues at his trial that Henry is family, not mere property.
