About the movie
Gary Wilkerson Jr., a young Black man who grew up told ‘‘That’s for White people,’’ decides to confront inherited fear about Black people in the outdoors by filming himself attempting the Pacific Crest Trail. He sets out on the six-month, 2,600-mile thru-hike from Mexico to Canada despite never having spent a night outside before. With filmmaker best friend Mary Jeanes traveling alongside in support, Wilkerson navigates harsh terrain, forms unexpected bonds with fellow hikers, and pursues a personal journey of self-discovery while challenging assumptions about who belongs in the woods.
