Set yourself up for the run

Platform and edition: Play on PlayStation 5 for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, released January 19, 2024.

The Remastered build adds PS5 features including DualSense support, performance and fidelity display modes, and expanded accessibility and audio options; configure these before beginning.

Choose difficulty before you start. Very Light or Light reduces survival pressure, while Moderate, Hard, Survivor and Custom provide progressively greater resource and combat demands.

Difficulty can be changed on some replays, but choose a consistent first-playthrough setting if you want a uniform challenge.

Choose Performance or Fidelity according to your display and preference. If your setup supports VRR, an unlocked-framerate option may also be available.

Review haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger intensity. Lower or disable them if you prefer standard controls or need to reduce trigger resistance.

Enable subtitles, subtitle direction, speaker names, aim assistance, navigation help, audio description or other accessibility options you need before starting.

The campaign supports manual saves and automatic checkpoints as separate save systems. Create a manual save when the option is available and keep a second slot for backup.

Protect the active campaign save before using Chapter Select. Selecting an earlier chapter can change the current progression state and reduce the later chapters shown for that active save; reload the completed or furthest-progress save when necessary.

Search for supplies and craft with the next encounter in mind. Early priorities should favor healing, useful throwables and equipment you regularly use rather than spending every material immediately.

No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Speedrun Mode and Chronological mode are separate Remastered content and are not required for the standard campaign ending.

Preparation — Start, settings and first-time tips

Set up The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PlayStation 5 before beginning the regular Story campaign. Choose the original narrative order rather than No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Speedrun Mode, or Chronological mode. Select Fidelity, Performance, or Unlocked Framerate according to your display, then adjust DualSense feedback, subtitles, accessibility tools, and difficulty. Create a manual save when the option is available and keep a second slot for protection before using Chapter Select. Manual saves create save points intended to preserve your saved position; automatic checkpoints are a separate recovery system. Before leaving the opening, practice crouching, Listen Mode, stealth takedowns, looting, crafting, and cover-based movement. Continue through the opening until the story reaches Jackson and progress has registered.

1. Start the regular Story campaign

From the title screen, select Story. The Remastered release separates the main campaign from No Return, the standalone survival mode, and Lost Levels, which contains early-development versions of three unused stages. Guitar Free Play and Speedrun Mode are also separate activities and are not required for the standard campaign.

Use the regular Story presentation for this guide. If the menu offers Chronological mode, do not select it. Chronological mode was added to the PS5 Remastered release through a later update and rearranges the campaign into timeline order. This guide follows the original narrative structure, including the intended perspective switch and flashback placement.

Select New Game when beginning from the start. If you are continuing from a PlayStation 4 copy, use Import Game only after confirming that the correct save data is available. Do not choose an import option when you want a clean campaign.

  • Select Story.
  • Choose the regular narrative order, not Chronological.
  • Do not select No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, or Speedrun Mode.
  • Use Import Game only when continuing existing PlayStation 4 progress.

2. Choose display and controller settings

Open Options from the title screen or pause menu. Fidelity Mode emphasizes image quality, Performance Mode prioritizes smoother movement and response, and Unlocked Framerate is intended for displays that support VRR. Choose the mode that fits your television or monitor. These display choices do not change story progression and can be changed later.

Review the DualSense settings for haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Lower trigger resistance if aiming or firing becomes uncomfortable, and reduce or disable haptic feedback if vibration is distracting. These changes affect controller feel only and do not block campaign progress.

Configure subtitles before starting. Enable subtitles if you want dialogue and enemy callouts displayed, and review speaker names, subtitle direction, text size, and contrast. Subtitle direction is particularly useful when you need to identify where a companion or enemy is speaking from during exploration and combat.

  • Choose Fidelity, Performance, or Unlocked Framerate according to your display.
  • Adjust haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger strength for comfort.
  • Enable subtitles, subtitle direction, and speaker names if useful.
  • Confirm that text and interface elements are readable.

3. Configure accessibility and difficulty

Open the Accessibility menu and review the vision, hearing, and motor options. Depending on your needs, useful settings include Navigation Assistance, Enhanced Listen Mode, aim assistance, high-contrast display, screen magnification, subtitle controls, traversal and combat audio cues, puzzle assistance, Descriptive Audio, and Speech to Vibrations. Start with a preset if that is convenient, then adjust individual settings.

Navigation Assistance can help identify the active story route. Enhanced Listen Mode can make enemies and nearby objects easier to locate. Aim assistance and traversal cues can reduce the difficulty of combat and movement without changing the required chapter order. Enable any setting that makes the campaign more comfortable before entering the first occupied areas.

Choose a difficulty deliberately. The available choices include Very Light, Light, Moderate, Hard, Survivor, and Custom. Moderate provides the conventional balance of exploration, stealth, combat, and resource pressure. Light or Very Light is suitable when reaching the ending is the priority. Hard and Survivor require more careful use of stealth, ammunition, healing items, and workbench upgrades. Custom difficulty allows separate categories such as player damage, enemy effectiveness, stealth, allies, and resources to be adjusted independently.

  • Review the vision, hearing, and motor accessibility options.
  • Enable aim, navigation, subtitle, or Listen Mode assistance if desired.
  • Choose Very Light, Light, Moderate, Hard, Survivor, or Custom deliberately.
  • Use Custom difficulty if only certain challenge categories need adjustment.

4. Create a manual save and protect the campaign file

When Save Game is available in the pause menu, create a manual save in a separate slot. A manual save creates a save point intended to preserve the saved position. It is not the same system as the automatic checkpoints used during normal forward play, so keep both systems in mind when deciding whether it is safe to quit.

Maintain one slot for the active campaign and another as a backup. If the game presents more than one save location, do not overwrite the protected file unnecessarily. This is especially important before using Chapter Select, replaying an earlier section, or experimenting with a different difficulty or route.

Chapter Select becomes available as campaign progress is recorded. It is useful for replaying completed sections, but selecting an earlier chapter can alter the active progression state associated with the working save. Before using it, protect the active campaign file. After completing the full story, return to the preserved completed save and verify that the campaign completion state and Chapter Select entries are present there.

During the opening, allow the game to register progress after major transitions. This gives you a reliable recovery point if you quit and return later. Do not treat Chapter Select as a replacement for a protected completed save, particularly if you plan to replay chapters for missed items or optional exploration.

  • Create a manual save when the option becomes available.
  • Keep a separate backup slot for the active campaign.
  • Remember that manual saves and automatic checkpoints are separate systems.
  • Protect the active campaign file before using Chapter Select.
  • After finishing the story, verify Chapter Select from the preserved completed save.

5. Practice the survival loop during the opening

The opening teaches habits that remain useful throughout the campaign. Crouch before entering an occupied area, use cover to study patrol routes, and activate Listen Mode when it is available and enabled. Move quietly through grass, rooms, and narrow spaces. Sprint when breaking line of sight, reaching cover, or escaping a flank. A stealth takedown usually preserves ammunition, but once enemies detect you, do not remain exposed while trying to restore a silent approach. Move, create distance, use cover, and reassess.

Search side rooms, containers, work areas, and dead-end spaces when the route is safe. You can find ammunition, ingredients, supplements, parts, and weapon-specific materials, but carrying capacity and crafting resources are limited. Prioritize supplies for the next likely encounter. A medkit or throwable may be more valuable than spending materials on an upgrade for equipment you rarely use. Save parts for weapons and skills that match your preferred approach.

Read the tutorial prompts for movement, crafting, aiming, dodging, and stealth before dismissing them. This is the safest part of the game for testing camera sensitivity, subtitle readability, trigger resistance, and accessibility features. Follow the required route and story prompts until the opening transitions into Jackson. That transition confirms that the initial setup is complete and the campaign has entered its first main story area.

  • Crouch, observe patrols, and use cover before committing to combat.
  • Use Listen Mode or Enhanced Listen Mode if enabled.
  • Search safe areas without risking unnecessary fights for minor supplies.
  • Craft for the next threat and preserve upgrade materials for frequently used equipment.
  • Continue until the opening transitions into Jackson.

Before you move on

  • The active file is a Story campaign save, not a No Return run, Lost Levels session, Guitar Free Play activity, Speedrun Mode session, or Chronological playthrough.
  • The regular original narrative order is selected.
  • Display mode, DualSense feedback, subtitles, and accessibility settings are configured and working.
  • A manual save exists in a separate slot once the game permits saving.
  • The starting difficulty has been selected.
  • The opening sequence has transitioned into Jackson.
  • Progress has registered after the transition before the console is closed or the save is overwritten.
  • A protected campaign save remains available before any later Chapter Select cleanup.
  • After the full campaign is eventually completed, Chapter Select is verified from the preserved completed save.

Prologue and Jackson — Opening events and tutorial segments

The Jackson chapter begins with Joel’s linear horseback Prologue, then introduces Ellie in Waking Up before switching briefly to Abby in The Overlook. Patrol returns to Ellie and Dina for the first substantial exploration and infected encounter. The Horde and The Chalet are Abby’s opening sections and lead into the major Jackson story turn. Packing Up returns to Ellie inside Joel’s house and ends when she leaves for Seattle. Supplies and collectibles are optional, but Patrol contains a useful early safe, workbench, weapon parts, supplements, and the first practical stealth encounters. The Prologue, The Horde, and The Chalet have no collectibles, while Waking Up, The Overlook, Patrol, and Packing Up contain optional entries and items. Follow the chapter transitions rather than trying to force a single character’s route through the entire act.

1. Follow Tommy through the Prologue horseback ride

Start the main campaign from the story option. The Remastered menu also contains No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, and other extras, but none of those are part of the campaign route. Select your preferred difficulty and accessibility options before starting; the game supports adjustable difficulty, manual saving, control reminders, tutorial reminders, and other assistance options on PS5.

After the opening scenes, control passes to Joel on horseback. Stay behind Tommy and follow the marked trail toward Jackson. Use the jump prompt when the horses reach obstacles and use the gallop control when you need to close the gap. Joel cannot dismount during this ride, and there is no side route, supply cache, or collectible to find.

Continue over the snowy trail and through the final approach until Jackson comes into view. The Prologue ends automatically and changes to Waking Up. Do not spend time searching the riding route; the objective is simply to remain with Tommy until the transition completes.

  • Start the main campaign rather than a Remastered side mode.
  • Follow Tommy on horseback toward Jackson.
  • Use the riding prompts at obstacles and continue until Waking Up begins.
  • Do not search for Prologue collectibles; this chapter has none.

2. Complete Waking Up with Ellie and reach the stables

Waking Up begins with Ellie inside Jackson. Collect the jacket from the desk and the knife near the door, then leave the room and follow Jesse through town. This is the first section in which exploration and optional pickups matter. You can search open areas without affecting the route, but stay near Jesse when he moves on.

At the first town crossing, turn left toward the noticeboard if you want the nearby trading card. Continue along the snowy road and inspect the blacksmith area before entering the Tipsy Bison. The blacksmith’s bench has optional weapon parts, and a document can be found nearby at the end of the road. These items are not required for story progression, but parts will later be used at workbenches.

Enter the Tipsy Bison for the conversation with Maria and Seth. After the scene, inspect the dartboard for the chapter’s other trading card if you are collecting. Leave the bar and follow Jesse and Maria along the road. Optional parts are available near the Public Library scaffolding and farther along on a box near the end of the street.

When Ellie reunites with Dina, complete the snowball fight. Pick up snow when prompted and throw it at the children. Winning is not required; the sequence advances after the activity. Follow Dina to the stables, where Ellie receives Shimmer and the patrol group organizes. The chapter ends after the departure preparations, transitioning to The Overlook.

  • Collect Ellie’s jacket and knife, then follow Jesse into town.
  • Search the crossing, blacksmith, and road near the Tipsy Bison for optional items.
  • Enter the Tipsy Bison and complete the conversation sequence.
  • Complete the snowball fight, then follow Dina to the stables.
  • Wait for The Overlook to load before continuing.

3. Play The Overlook as Abby and learn the core combat controls

The Overlook is not an Ellie-and-Dina section. Control switches to Abby, who begins with Owen before separating from him while trying to reach the overlook near Jackson. Follow Owen through the snowy route and use this section to learn the game’s traversal prompts: jumping, sprint-jumping, vaulting, squeezing through gaps, crouching, and going prone.

After Owen leaves, continue toward the overlook. Abby is attacked by infected during the route, which introduces melee attacks, dodging, escaping grabs, aiming, shooting, and Listen Mode. Dodge with correct timing rather than repeatedly pressing the button, then counter with melee attacks when an infected commits to a swing. Conserve ammunition where a melee option is safe, because Abby starts this chapter with limited resources.

When the path reaches a damaged house, crawl underneath the floorboards. An infected crawls toward Abby from the opposite side; shoot it, then leave the crawl space. Before continuing, circle around the left side of the house and jump through the window into the adjacent room if you want the chapter’s optional artifact.

The next house contains a more deliberate stealth tutorial. Crouch, hold Listen Mode if enabled, and approach unaware enemies from behind. Grab an enemy when the prompt appears and perform a stealth takedown. In the final infected area, you can either fight carefully or move through the gaps beneath vehicles to avoid some enemies. Follow the snowy tracks after Abby squeezes through the vehicle gap. This ends The Overlook and returns control to Ellie in Patrol.

  • Remember that Abby is the playable character in The Overlook.
  • Follow Owen’s opening route, then continue toward the overlook after he leaves.
  • Practice dodging, melee attacks, Listen Mode, stealth grabs, and stealth takedowns.
  • Search the house after the floorboard crawl if you want the optional artifact.
  • Reach the vehicle gap and follow the tracks to finish the chapter.

4. Ride Patrol with Ellie and Dina, clear Greenplace Market, and reach the library

Patrol returns to Ellie and Dina on horseback. Follow Dina through the snow to the first patrol stop. When you dismount, search the accessible rooms and climb as directed. After the balcony scene, inspect the view for Ellie’s optional journal entry, then continue with Dina. During the next ride, several houses and an RV contain optional parts, supplements, an artifact, and a trading card; collect them only if you want the supplies or completion progress.

Continue riding until you reach the blood trail and moose carcass near Greenplace Market. Enter the market through the opening and eliminate the first infected quietly from behind. Search side rooms before advancing. When an infected rushes Ellie, use the prompted throwable to stun it, then continue through the building and outside into the surrounding area.

Crawl under the truck when the route requires it, then climb into the market through the roof opening. Ellie and Dina put on masks before entering the spore-filled section. Move slowly between shelves and use Listen Mode to locate infected. Clickers require special care: avoid their detection range when possible, use stealth only when the approach is safe, and spend ammunition or a shiv when necessary. After Dina gives Ellie the Molotov, search the room for optional supplies before climbing out.

In the following room, clear the infected and retrieve the rope. Throw it over the air duct so Ellie and Dina can climb across. Once outside, remount and continue through the snowstorm. Stay on the route and use Dina’s calls to relocate her if visibility becomes poor. Enter the library when she leads Ellie there.

Break the window of the Copy Center to enter the library’s back area. Search the rooms, then continue until the game automatically provides Eugene’s Firefly pendant. Inspect the giraffe for a journal entry and search the side room, nightstand, and desk for optional items. Start the generator and use the workbench if you want to spend parts on upgrades. Push the shelf aside to enter the basement, then inspect the required object that advances the scene. The chapter ends when the patrol story moves forward to The Horde.

  • Follow Dina through the first patrol stop and optional houses.
  • Use stealth around Greenplace Market’s infected before entering the spore-filled rooms.
  • Use the Molotov and rope when they are introduced.
  • In the market back office, the safe combination is 07-20-13 if you choose to open it.
  • Start the library generator and continue through the basement objective.
  • Reach the end of Patrol and wait for The Horde to begin.

5. Escape The Horde, investigate The Chalet, and finish Packing Up

The Horde is played as Abby. When the infected swarm her, immediately turn around and run through the container route. Keep moving down toward the water, then use the slope, car, fence opening, and gap that lead toward the next structures. This is an escape sequence, not an area intended for complete looting or systematic clearing.

After Abby is caught, Joel and Tommy intervene. Follow Tommy through the partially opened door after his Molotov clears the immediate path. Pick up the pipe inside and fight the infected in the room. Use melee attacks against ordinary Runners, dodge their lunges, and replace a broken weapon with another melee weapon from the room. Save pistol ammunition for Clickers and other threats that are dangerous to approach.

When Tommy opens the next route, help Joel and Tommy push the gondola toward the window. Continue fighting only long enough to keep the group alive; infected continue entering from multiple directions. Once the gondola reaches the window, climb over it, escape through the opening, and follow Joel to the horses. The Horde ends without collectibles or a separate exploration objective.

The Chalet begins with Ellie, Dina, and Jesse searching for Joel and Tommy. Follow the cliffside path toward the lodge. At the fence near the lodge, use the openings to squeeze through, then enter through the open sliding door. Descend through the lodge and investigate the ground floor. When the route points toward the kitchen, enter the basement and inspect the source of the noise. The chapter advances through the ensuing story scene; there is no alternate route or collectible search required.

Packing Up returns to Ellie in Jackson. Follow the objective to Joel’s house and search the rooms if you want the optional journal entries. In the kitchen, interact with the mug. Upstairs, interact with the guitar, then open the red box on Joel’s bed to obtain the required watch. After exploring, go downstairs and speak with Maria. Continue the conversation and departure sequence until Ellie leaves Jackson. The next campaign chapter is Seattle Day 1: The Gate.

  • As Abby, run through the container, water, slope, fence, and gap route during The Horde.
  • Fight with melee weapons while conserving pistol ammunition for Clickers.
  • Help Joel and Tommy push the gondola, then escape through the window.
  • As Ellie, approach The Chalet from the cliff and enter through the sliding door.
  • Investigate the basement to complete The Chalet.
  • In Packing Up, visit Joel’s house, inspect the required upstairs box, and speak with Maria.
  • Confirm that the story transitions to Seattle Day 1: The Gate.

Before you move on

  • The Prologue, Waking Up, The Overlook, Patrol, The Horde, The Chalet, and Packing Up have been completed in the campaign sequence.
  • Ellie has completed the Jackson patrol and left Joel’s house after speaking with Maria.
  • The next available campaign section is Seattle Day 1: The Gate.
  • Any desired optional Jackson supplies, journal entries, collectibles, safe contents, and workbench upgrades have been collected, or have been intentionally deferred for later Chapter Select access.
  • A manual or automatic save exists after the Jackson departure if you want to preserve this campaign position for replay.

Seattle — Ellie Day 1: initial city forays and supply raids

Seattle Day 1 follows Ellie and Dina from the city outskirts through The Gate, Downtown, Eastbrook Elementary, Capitol Hill, Channel 13 and the subway tunnels before they reach the theater. Downtown is a semi-open area: the required progression involves investigating the Courthouse and the Dome/Synagogue, obtaining the fuel can and gasoline, then powering the eastern gate. The order of those two locations can change where the usable fuel is found, so search both rather than assuming one fixed solution. Optional buildings contain supplies and upgrades but are not required. Capitol Hill introduces trip wires and denser WLF patrols, while The Tunnels combines WLF soldiers with Infected and shamblers. The chapter ends inside the theater after Ellie and Dina complete the nighttime scenes; Seattle Day 2 begins after the theater sequence.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered gameplay on Sony PlayStation 5
The Last of Us Part II Remastered — gameplay image.

1. The Gate — enter Seattle with Dina

Start on horseback with Dina and follow the visible trail through the woods. Stay on the marked route, crossing the barricades and abandoned vehicles until you reach the first gate area. Dismount when prompted and search nearby buildings if you need early supplements, parts, ammunition or crafting materials. Optional items can be collected now, but none are needed to unlock the main route.

At the large gate, inspect the controls and follow Dina’s instructions when the mechanism cannot be used normally. Move around the structure, climb the available ladder and cross the elevated path. Continue through the abandoned quarantine-zone buildings and follow the road toward Gate East 2. When you reach the generator, inspect it to trigger the fuel objective. The gate cannot be opened yet, so follow the route into Downtown rather than searching for another control.

Use the map when Ellie receives it. The map records landmarks and can help you identify the courthouse, dome and eastern gate. This is the transition into Downtown, where the chapter becomes semi-open for a while.

  • Follow the horseback route into Seattle.
  • Use the elevated route around the first major gate.
  • Reach Gate East 2 and inspect the empty generator.
  • Open the Downtown map before choosing your next destination.

2. Downtown — investigate both fuel locations

Downtown allows exploration in several directions, but the main objective is to find gasoline for the generator at Gate East 2. The two essential locations are the Courthouse and the Dome, also referred to as the Synagogue. Visit both story locations. Do not assume that the gasoline will always be in the same place: the game can make the first location provide the fuel can while the second provides the gasoline, depending on which one you enter first.

At the Dome/Synagogue, use the damaged exterior route to get inside. Search the interior, move through the storage areas and interact with the fuel equipment when the objective directs you. At the Courthouse, reach the building through its accessible upper route, descend into the interior and deal with the infected and other hazards. Search the garage and surrounding rooms for the fuel objective. If the first location is empty, that is not a progression failure; return to the other required location.

Once you have the filled fuel can, return to Gate East 2. Place the fuel in the generator and operate the gate controls. The gate opens onto the next story route. Optional Downtown locations, including shops, offices and other ruined buildings, can provide supplies, a safe, a weapon-related reward and upgrade materials, but clearing every marked site is unnecessary. Search optional areas only when the surrounding route is safe and your resources justify the detour.

  • Use the map to locate the Courthouse and Dome/Synagogue.
  • Investigate both required fuel locations.
  • If the first location does not contain usable gasoline, search the other location.
  • Return to Gate East 2 and power the generator.
  • Leave Downtown through the opened gate.

3. Eastbrook Elementary — clear the school and escape

Enter the school through the upper approach and advance until Ellie and Dina encounter WLF soldiers. The opening rooms support stealth: stay low, use desks and walls as cover, and wait for isolated enemies to separate from the group. A brick or bottle can pull a patrol away from the route. If an enemy discovers you, break line of sight through classrooms or side rooms before deciding whether to fight.

Continue through the classrooms and offices, checking desks and side rooms for materials. The route eventually becomes more direct and forces several close-range encounters. Use the school’s doorways and furniture to prevent enemies from surrounding you. A bow, suppressed pistol or quiet melee takedown saves ammunition for the later subway section, but do not hesitate to use a firearm if stealth leaves you trapped in a narrow room.

Follow the objective through the upper areas and damaged sections of the building. When the escape sequence begins, move across the rooftops and through the highlighted route instead of trying to return to previously searched rooms. Leave the school with Dina and continue toward Capitol Hill.

  • Use stealth in the first WLF patrol areas.
  • Search classrooms and offices when safe.
  • Break contact through side rooms if an alarm is raised.
  • Follow the rooftop escape route out of the school.

4. Capitol Hill — avoid trip wires and divide patrols

Capitol Hill combines WLF patrols with trip mines. Slow down whenever you see a wire stretched across a doorway, alley or narrow path. Crouch and inspect the ground before crossing. Look for side windows, garage openings and alternate streets when a trapped entrance blocks the direct route. Do not rush through a wire simply because an enemy patrol is nearby; repositioning is usually safer than taking the explosion and alerting the area.

Use grass, parked vehicles and building interiors to move between patrols. Throw a bottle or brick away from your intended path to create a gap, then relocate after each takedown. If you are spotted, retreat around a corner and use the new angle rather than standing in the street. Save some shotgun ammunition, explosives and healing materials for the later encounters, but clear enemies that directly block the story route before searching side buildings.

Optional shops and apartments contain supplies and may include useful upgrades or training material. Search them only after nearby patrols are dealt with. Continue through the residential streets until you reach the exterior of Channel 13.

  • Inspect doorways and alleys for trip wires.
  • Use distractions and cover to separate WLF patrols.
  • Search optional buildings only when the area is secure.
  • Reach the Channel 13 entrance.

5. Channel 13 — follow the station investigation

Enter Channel 13 through the exterior route and climb across the damaged building using ledges, windows and broken walls. The offices and corridors are confined, so move slowly around corners and keep a retreat route open. Search desks and side rooms for supplies, but do not let optional searching pull you away from the objective marker.

Follow the blood trail through the station. The route leads upward toward the broadcast area and a story sequence. After the scene, the building becomes an escape path. Continue through the damaged upper floors, climb or drop where prompted and stay with Dina. Once outside, follow the objective toward the subway entrance.

The station is no longer freely explorable after the broadcast sequence. If you want its optional supplies, collect them before triggering the final story interaction; otherwise, leave promptly and conserve resources for The Tunnels.

  • Climb through the damaged exterior of Channel 13.
  • Follow the blood trail to the broadcast area.
  • Complete the story sequence and escape the station.
  • Enter the subway with Dina.

6. The Tunnels — survive mixed enemies and shamblers

The subway begins with WLF soldiers and Infected in the same area. Use cover and let the groups draw attention away from Ellie when possible. After the immediate danger passes, search platforms and train cars for ammunition, parts and crafting materials. Red-lit doors, train cars and maintenance corridors mark the forward route; do not return toward the station entrance unless the objective specifically sends you back.

In the darker sections, use Listen Mode if enabled and move carefully around Clickers and Runners. The first shambler encounters occur in confined rooms. Keep distance, use high-damage weapons or explosives when necessary and move away when a shambler releases its damaging spore cloud. Do not stand in the cloud after the burst. If the route allows, bypass isolated Infected instead of spending all ammunition on optional kills.

Continue through the train cars and service passages. Search side rooms when safe, but keep enough supplies for forced fights. Follow the route through the flooded section, swim toward the visible opening and climb out when prompted. The escape leads directly toward the theater.

  • Use the WLF–Infected conflict to reduce pressure where possible.
  • Search train cars and platforms for recovery supplies.
  • Keep distance from shamblers and avoid their spore clouds.
  • Follow the flooded route toward the theater.

7. The Theater — establish the chapter checkpoint

Enter the theater and follow Dina through the building rather than searching every room immediately. Once Ellie is free to explore, inspect the theater’s public areas for supplies and interact with the radio in the appropriate room. The objective then leads upstairs and through the theater’s backstage areas.

Follow the marked route through the backstage and performance spaces. A guitar interaction and the nighttime story scenes occur here. Allow the dialogue and cinematics to finish; the theater is the safe location that closes Seattle Day 1, not a combat area that needs to be cleared.

When the next morning begins and Ellie wakes in the theater, Seattle Day 1 is complete. The following chapter is Seattle Day 2, beginning with Ellie’s next objective.

  • Reach the theater with Dina.
  • Search the safe theater areas if desired.
  • Use the radio and follow the route to backstage.
  • Complete the guitar and nighttime scenes.
  • Continue until Ellie wakes for Seattle Day 2.

Before you move on

  • The Gate, Downtown, Eastbrook Elementary, Capitol Hill, Channel 13, The Tunnels and The Theater have been completed.
  • Ellie and Dina have reached the theater and the nighttime scenes have finished.
  • Ellie wakes in the theater for Seattle Day 2.
  • Chapter Select, when opened after campaign progress is recorded, lists the completed Seattle Day 1 progression.
  • No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play and other Remastered extras are not required for this campaign chapter.

Seattle — Ellie Day 2: The Birthday Gift, Hillcrest, Finding Strings, The Seraphites and St. Mary's Hospital

Seattle Day 2 begins with The Birthday Gift, a Jackson flashback in which Ellie and Joel visit the Wyoming Museum of Science and History. Explore the space exhibit, dinosaur hall and museum galleries, then finish the flashback and return to the theater. Hillcrest follows in present-day Seattle: search the neighborhood, pass WLF patrols and dogs, survive the chase, and acquire the bow. Finding Strings returns to Jackson for target practice with Tommy, a horseback ride with Joel, an infected-infested hotel and a Bloater encounter before returning to Seattle. The Seraphites sends Ellie through stores, the Conference Center, a Stalker-infested apartment and flooded streets toward the hospital. St. Mary's Hospital is a separate short chapter: infiltrate the hospital, follow Nora through the wards and elevator-shaft route, descend into the spore-filled basement, complete the confrontation and let the return-to-theater scene finish. Road to the Aquarium is the next required chapter.

1. Complete The Birthday Gift museum flashback

The Birthday Gift begins from the theater and shifts to an earlier Jackson outing with Joel. Follow Joel on horseback until you reach the Wyoming Museum of Science and History. Dismount at the entrance and enter the museum. This section is primarily exploration and story progression, not a combat chapter, so take time to inspect the exhibits and search accessible rooms before advancing.

Begin in the space exhibit. Follow the available path through the displays, interact with the required exhibits and continue deeper into the museum. The route eventually brings Ellie to the planetarium-style area and the space-themed displays that explain why Joel chose this location as her birthday surprise. Use the marked doors, openings and exhibit transitions as your landmarks; there is no need to find a hidden combat route or conserve ammunition here.

Continue into the dinosaur section. Walk among the skeletons and displays, investigate the accessible exhibits and follow the story prompts involving the dinosaur figures and Joel's gift. Some optional interactions and collectibles are easy to miss if you rush, but none are required to unlock the next chapter. When the museum sequence reaches its final story beat, follow Joel back out and allow the scene to transition to the theater.

The Birthday Gift is complete when control returns to the present-day Seattle storyline. Do not expect a Bloater or infected fight in this chapter. The infected hotel sequence and Bloater encounter belong to Finding Strings, which follows Hillcrest.

  • Ride with Joel to the Wyoming Museum of Science and History.
  • Finish the space exhibit and dinosaur museum route.
  • Complete the flashback and return to present-day Seattle at the theater.

2. Search Hillcrest and follow the gunfire

After the museum flashback, Hillcrest begins with Ellie hearing gunfire. Move down into the neighborhood and use the streets, shops, yards and connected buildings to follow the sound. The opening area contains optional supplies and collectibles, so search accessible rooms before committing to the next major encounter, but do not force a side room if doing so costs health or valuable ammunition.

The required path eventually takes Ellie through a larger WLF-controlled section. Use grass, interior rooms, fences and alternate elevations to stay concealed. Dogs can track Ellie after finding her scent, so do not remain in the same hiding place once a patrol has detected you. Move through a building or yard, break line of sight and attack only after the search pattern separates enemies.

If you fight, remove isolated human targets quietly where possible and reposition after each attack. A brick or bottle can create an opening for a stealth takedown, while the bow and suppressed pistol are useful against separated enemies. If the encounter becomes chaotic, retreat through the connected buildings rather than holding an exposed street position.

  • Enter Hillcrest and follow the gunfire through the neighborhood.
  • Search safe side rooms without delaying the required route.
  • Relocate when WLF patrols or dogs begin tracking Ellie.

3. Survive the Hillcrest pursuit and obtain the bow

Continue through the houses, yards and narrow passages until the vehicle pursuit begins. This is a forward-moving sequence. Follow the available escape route through interiors, fences and yards instead of trying to return to the opening streets. The game redirects Ellie through the neighborhood, and the chase advances when you keep moving toward the next opening.

Later, after another stretch of Hillcrest exploration and combat, Ellie enters a house and encounters a dog. Continue through the building and nearby exterior spaces after this sequence. The story eventually provides the bow. Collect arrows in the surrounding area once the immediate danger has passed, then use the bow to thin later patrols without repeatedly firing from one position.

Before leaving Hillcrest, use any available workbench if you have parts for a useful upgrade, but keep enough materials for healing and emergency craftables. The bow is not a separate optional weapon pickup that can be skipped; it is part of the required Hillcrest progression. The chapter advances after the following story sequence and transition.

  • Finish the vehicle pursuit without attempting to backtrack.
  • Complete the later Hillcrest encounter and acquire the bow.
  • Allow the story transition to move into Finding Strings.

4. Complete Finding Strings in Jackson

Finding Strings is a flashback set in Jackson. Begin by following Tommy and completing the target-practice activity. Shoot the required targets, then continue through the snowy route until Ellie rides with Joel. This opening is mostly linear, although nearby areas can contain optional supplies and collectibles.

Follow Joel on horseback toward the ruined hotel. When the direct route is blocked, dismount and use the alternate path Joel indicates. Enter the hotel and continue through the interior until the characters reach the spore-filled section and put on their masks. Once inside, search accessible rooms if you want optional items, then continue through the connected rooms and corridors.

The infected encounter begins as you move farther into the hotel. Use stealth against isolated infected when practical, keep a retreat route open and avoid spending every bullet before the next transition. Listen for movement around corners and use doorways or furniture to prevent infected from surrounding Ellie.

The hotel sequence culminates in a Bloater encounter. Keep moving through the available space so the Bloater cannot corner you. Firearms, explosives and incendiary attacks can damage it; use the opening created by its attacks to create distance, then attack from a safer angle. Joel's assistance is part of the sequence, so your goal is survival and forward progress rather than exhaustive exploration during the fight. After the encounter, follow Joel through the remaining rooms and complete the flashback transition back to present-day Seattle.

  • Finish target practice with Tommy.
  • Ride with Joel to the ruined hotel and enter the spore-filled section.
  • Survive the infected rooms and Bloater encounter.
  • Complete the return to present-day Seattle.

5. Cross the opening route in The Seraphites

Back in Seattle, Ellie heads toward the hospital. Pass through the turnstile, then use the crates and nearby roof to reach the route beyond the fence. Continue through the stores and the Quickmart area. Side buildings contain optional supplies and collectibles; search them when enemy movement permits, but do not confuse them with required objectives.

The route leads through an infected-occupied store and toward the Conference Center. You can avoid unnecessary ammunition use by drawing infected away from the path or moving around the edge of the encounter. If you choose to fight, use the bow, traps or incendiaries while keeping an exit route open.

At the Conference Center, climb through the elevator-shaft route. Break the required glass, expose the path for the rope and throw it across to the adjacent side. Swing across, enter the room and unlock the route forward. Use the rope traversal as the landmark that confirms you are following the intended path; there is no ground-level shortcut that bypasses this section.

  • Pass the turnstile and climb onto the roof route.
  • Move through the stores and infected encounter.
  • Complete the Conference Center rope traversal.

6. Cross the Stalker building, flooded route and Seraphite streets

Continue through the connected apartments and enter the dark building containing Stalkers. These infected often retreat, hide and attack from close range rather than rushing immediately. Check corners and doorways before moving forward, and keep a shotgun, melee weapon, throwable or other close-range option ready. Listen Mode can help if enabled, but Stalkers may be difficult to locate until they commit to an attack.

After the building begins flooding, follow the lower route through the water and damaged interiors. Movement is slower in flooded spaces, so avoid standing in open water while enemies are searching. Continue through the available openings until Ellie reaches the exterior route toward the hospital.

The next section contains Seraphites using whistles, arrows and melee weapons. Grass and wrecked vehicles provide concealment. You can bypass or thin patrols from the edge of the area rather than starting a prolonged firefight in the center. Reposition after every attack, collect arrows from defeated enemies when safe and preserve at least one healing item and a close-range option for the hospital approach.

The Seraphites chapter ends as Ellie reaches the St. Mary's Hospital area and the game transitions to the separate St. Mary's Hospital chapter. Do not mark the Nora confrontation as complete yet; that occurs in the next chapter.

  • Survive or bypass the Stalker-infested apartment building.
  • Follow the flooded route out toward the hospital.
  • Cross the Seraphite-controlled streets and reach the hospital transition.

7. Infiltrate St. Mary's Hospital and pursue Nora

St. Mary's Hospital begins with Ellie inside the hospital area. Advance through the WLF-controlled rooms and treatment areas, searching for supplies when patrol movement allows. Follow the upper route and continue through the hospital interior until Ellie reaches the air duct. Enter the duct and crawl through it to locate Nora.

Nora runs when Ellie confronts her. Follow the chase through the hospital floors instead of trying to clear every side room. Break through the required windows, continue along the marked route and descend through the elevator-shaft sequence. The route becomes increasingly dangerous and eventually reaches the spore-filled basement.

In the basement, use corners, doorways and short retreats to avoid being surrounded. Some infected can be bypassed while you stay near the side of the route, but keep a close-range weapon ready if one blocks the next opening. The objective is to follow Nora and reach the confrontation, not to search every room or defeat every infected in the basement.

When Ellie catches Nora, complete the mandatory confrontation and allow the aftermath to play. The chapter does not finish merely when Ellie enters the hospital or starts the chase. The required endpoint is the completed basement confrontation followed by the return-to-theater sequence.

  • Reach the hospital air duct and follow Nora's escape route.
  • Descend through the elevator shaft into the spore-filled basement.
  • Complete the Nora confrontation and let the aftermath scene finish.

8. Confirm Seattle Day 2 completion

Remain in control until the return-to-theater scene has finished and the game advances. The hospital confrontation is followed by story material in the theater before the next required chapter, Road to the Aquarium. Let the autosave complete before quitting or using Chapter Select.

For a normal campaign completion check, open Chapter Select after the transition and confirm that The Birthday Gift, Hillcrest, Finding Strings, The Seraphites and St. Mary's Hospital are all available as completed chapters. Optional collectibles, supplies and upgrades are not required to advance this assignment and can be pursued later through Chapter Select if the relevant save remains available.

If you are playing on a higher difficulty, prioritize healing materials, arrows and one emergency throwable over exhaustive exploration during the Seraphite and hospital sections. The museum flashback does not consume combat resources, while Finding Strings and the hospital route contain the encounters most likely to drain ammunition.

  • The Birthday Gift, Hillcrest, Finding Strings, The Seraphites and St. Mary's Hospital are complete.
  • The Finding Strings hotel infected encounter and Bloater have been survived.
  • The Nora confrontation and return-to-theater aftermath have finished.
  • Chapter Select recognizes progress beyond St. Mary's Hospital.
  • Road to the Aquarium is the next required story chapter.

Before you move on

  • The Birthday Gift has been completed from the theater flashback through the Wyoming Museum of Science and History and back to present-day Seattle.
  • Hillcrest has been completed and Ellie has obtained the bow.
  • Finding Strings has ended after target practice, the ruined hotel, the infected encounter and the Bloater sequence.
  • The Seraphites route has been completed through the stores, Conference Center, Stalker building, flooded route and hospital approach.
  • St. Mary's Hospital has been completed through the hospital infiltration, Nora chase, spore-filled basement confrontation and return-to-theater aftermath.
  • Chapter Select shows the five required chapters as completed, with Road to the Aquarium next in the original campaign order.

Seattle — Ellie Day 3: climax of the first half

Ellie’s Seattle Day 3 route has three chapters: Road to the Aquarium, The Flooded City, and Infiltration. Begin at the theater with Jesse, cross the flooded streets, search the submerged buildings, and reach the boat in the mall. After Jesse leaves to pursue Tommy, Ellie drives through the flooded city, stops to open gates, searches a safe location, survives the W&B Arcade encounter, and continues toward the Aquarium. A storm throws her from the boat near the Ferris wheel. Reach the beached ship, crawl through it, and enter the Aquarium through its damaged exterior. Infiltration is a short traversal and scripted combat section ending with Ellie returning to the theater. There is no conventional boss fight, but the Arcade’s Bloater and the close-quarters Aquarium sequence can cause deaths if you spend resources carelessly. Optional collectibles include Trading Cards, Artifacts, Journal Entries, Workbenches, and one Flooded City safe; collect them before crossing irreversible transitions if desired.

Leave the theater and reach the boat in the mall

Start in the theater and move toward the red curtains. Before opening them, search the stage area for the Trading Card if you want the optional collectible. Go through the curtains, meet Jesse outside, and follow him through the damaged streets. When the route reaches a blocked doorway, enter the building on the right and crawl beneath the obstruction. This interior contains a Workbench and another optional Trading Card; use the Workbench before continuing if you have parts and supplements available.

Continue through the blue double doors, search the rooms, and push the shelf aside to crawl through the opening. You will enter a WLF-controlled area. Four soldiers are present initially, with more arriving after the encounter begins. Stay behind cover, use the surrounding buildings and grass, and separate enemies with bottles or bricks. Jesse can help draw attention, but avoid crossing open ground while dogs or multiple soldiers are searching. After the area is clear, loot the buildings and proceed toward the Convention Center and the flooded parking garage.

Swim through the garage route and deal with the infected inside. Follow Jesse through the water and ruined structures, then pass through the bookstore and upper-floor areas. The route eventually leads to another WLF position containing soldiers and a dog. Use stealth where practical, but do not remain in one hiding place once enemies begin searching. After this encounter, continue through the damaged building and use the second Workbench if you want to craft or upgrade before the mall section.

Follow Jesse through the water and climb the rope when prompted. After the scene, swim forward and enter the mall. Jesse and Ellie separate while looking for a boat. Stay on the lower-left side of the mall when possible: move through the water, use the escalators, and descend toward the docked boat. Clear or bypass the remaining soldiers, board the boat, start the engine, and drive down the rapids. The next chapter begins during this escape.

  • Take the optional Theater Trading Card before opening the red curtains.
  • Use the Workbench in the early building before the WLF encounter if needed.
  • After Jesse leaves to pursue Tommy, stop looking for him and follow the boat objective.
  • Reach the lower-level boat in the mall and drive through the rapids.

Navigate the Flooded City and open every required route

When control returns, steer the boat downstream and stay alert for debris. Search the ambulance and open truck along the route if you need supplies. Continue past the ice-cream truck and through the flooded structures until the boat reaches a closed gate. Stop at the gate and leave the boat. Enter the nearby building, search the desk drawer for the optional Trading Card, then return toward the gate area.

Climb the stairs near the gate and look out over the water for Ellie’s Journal Entry. Search the nearby body for the note that provides the safe combination. Move the cart out of the way, crawl through the opening, and drop into the area on the other side. The safe is inside this section; use the combination from the note rather than trying to force the locked route. Open the exit, return to the boat, and restart the engine.

Continue until the boat must stop again near a damaged building. Leave under the blue tarp, enter the building, and use the Workbench inside if you want to prepare for the upcoming combat. Exit, cross back over the barbed wire, and drive toward the hotel-like structure. Enter through the flooded opening and search the interior for the note about Shamblers. Continue until you see fire and soldiers fighting nearby.

At the firelit area, move toward the collapsed train car and climb inside. Use the wire hanging from the car to swing across to the previously locked section, then loot the train before returning to the boat. Drive toward the fire and stop beneath the structure. Climb the stairs and deal with the soldiers above. Once the area is safe, search for supplies and the optional note, then climb across the bus and return to the boat.

Follow the waterway until you reach W&B Arcade. Before moving the cart or crossing the point that starts the encounter, search the arcade for ammunition, healing items, and crafting materials. Use the machines and partitions as cover, but keep a route open behind Ellie. The infected attack in waves, and a Bloater appears after the floor gives way. Keep distance from the Bloater, use pipe bombs or other high-damage tools when available, and use the shotgun or carefully aimed shots if you lack explosives. Do not let the Bloater pin you against the counters. After the fight, loot the arcade, climb to the upper area, and continue to the boat.

  • Leave the boat at the first gate and search the adjacent building for the route forward.
  • Use the note near the gate to obtain the safe combination.
  • Use the second Flooded City Workbench before approaching W&B Arcade.
  • Loot W&B Arcade before triggering the infected encounter.
  • Keep moving around the Bloater and avoid allowing it to corner you.

Reach the Aquarium after the storm destroys the boat route

Drive away from W&B Arcade and follow the flooded streets toward the Ferris wheel. The wheel is the main landmark for the final approach. When the storm and waves stop the boat, Ellie is thrown into the water. Swim toward land and the visible Ferris wheel. Do not search for the boat or attempt to reverse through the flooded route; the story requires Ellie to continue on foot.

After reaching shore, follow the path through the broken fence on the right. Climb onto the roof and drop into the damaged building. Move left, slide through the gap, and find the vent. Crawl through the ventilation route, climb the ladder at the end of the watery section, and drop into the next room. Continue through the following vent and connected passages until Ellie falls into the lower area.

A guard dog attacks immediately after the fall. Follow the on-screen prompt to survive the close-quarters struggle, then move left and interact with the bag on the floor if you want the Journal Entry available in this section. Continue through the Aquarium route rather than returning to the previous vent. Search shelves and side spaces before entering the room with the crab-design door, because the next scene advances the chapter.

The Aquarium interior does not contain a conventional boss fight. It leads to a scripted confrontation involving Owen and Mel. When the struggle begins, follow the prompted close-quarters actions and continue moving as the game opens the route. Do not waste ammunition trying to turn this into a normal arena encounter; the sequence is controlled by the prompts and story transitions. After the scene, search only if the game still permits it, then follow the direct route toward the exit.

  • After the boat capsizes, swim toward shore and the Ferris wheel.
  • Reach the beached ship and Aquarium route on foot rather than searching for the boat.
  • Use the prompt to survive the dog attack after falling through the vent.
  • Enter the crab-design door only after checking nearby supplies and the journal interaction.
  • Treat the Owen and Mel sequence as a scripted close-quarters confrontation, not a boss arena.

Return to the theater and verify the perspective transition

After the Aquarium confrontation, follow the available path back through the building. The game does not require you to retrace every earlier room or repeat the Flooded City combat sections. Stay on the direct route, use the exit, and allow the return-to-theater scenes to play. If the game briefly removes control or begins a cinematic, wait for the transition to finish instead of quitting during it.

When Ellie reaches the theater, continue through the resulting scenes until control or the next chapter title appears. The next campaign section is Abby’s Park chapter, which confirms that Seattle Day 3 for Ellie has ended. If you are collecting items, use Chapter Select later rather than restarting the whole campaign; Road to the Aquarium and The Flooded City contain the bulk of the optional items for this day, while Infiltration has no normal Trading Card or Artifact requirement in the referenced collectible listings.

Before closing the game, wait for the autosave indicator to finish. You may also create a manual save in a separate slot after returning to the theater. Then open Chapter Select and confirm that Road to the Aquarium, The Flooded City, and Infiltration are available as completed or reached chapters. Chapter Select status can vary depending on the exact save and whether you continued through the transition, so the strongest completion check is both the chapter listing and the visible start of Abby’s next story section.

  • Allow the Aquarium and theater cinematics to finish.
  • Confirm that Abby’s Park chapter begins after Ellie’s theater sequence.
  • Wait for the autosave indicator before quitting.
  • Use Chapter Select to confirm access to the three Ellie Seattle Day 3 chapters.
  • Keep No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, and other Remastered extras separate from this campaign completion.

Before you move on

  • Road to the Aquarium, The Flooded City, and Infiltration are available in Chapter Select.
  • Ellie has completed the flooded-city boat route, the W&B Arcade fight, and the Aquarium infiltration.
  • The Aquarium confrontation and return-to-theater cinematics have finished.
  • The next story section begins with Abby in The Park.
  • A completed autosave or manual save exists after the theater transition.
  • The campaign save remains separate from No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Chronological mode, and other Remastered extras.

Perspective switch — Tracking Lesson (The Park) and The Stadium

Tracking Lesson is chapter 23 and opens with Abby’s Park flashback, set near the Seattle zoo. Treat The Park as the setting and opening section of Tracking Lesson, not as a separate chapter. Guide Abby through the forest, broken-window route, dumpster climb, Virginia Coin interaction and rooftop crossing to reunite with Jerry. Follow the tracks, complete the animal-care sequence and pass through the hallway doors to finish the chapter. The Stadium then begins Abby’s Seattle Day 1. Follow Manny to the cafeteria, room 203, the kennel and armory. Collect Abby’s weapons, use the target range, then enter the truck and defend it during the scripted Seraphite ambush. After the crash, follow Manny and Mel into the bay door. On Foot loads after this transition and marks the completion of The Stadium.

1. Begin Tracking Lesson in The Park

The perspective switch occurs in Tracking Lesson, chapter 23, which opens with Abby’s Park flashback. Treat The Park as the setting and opening section of Tracking Lesson, not as a separate chapter. You control Abby in a flashback near the Seattle zoo, and the first objective is to find her father, Jerry.

Follow the obvious woodland path from the starting point. Continue forward until Abby reaches a fallen tree and crouches underneath it. In the next area, move toward the buildings. If you want the optional Zoo Holiday Brochure, enter the gazebo on the right before going to the building. The brochure is not needed for story progress.

Approach the nearby building and crouch under the blocked doorway. A bottle falls near the garbage can. Pick it up, throw it through the small window on the right and climb through the broken window. This is the required route into the next outdoor area.

  • Control has changed to Abby in Tracking Lesson.
  • The Park is being treated as the opening setting of chapter 23, not as an additional chapter.
  • Abby has reached the building and entered through the broken window.
  • The optional Zoo Holiday Brochure was either collected or deliberately skipped.

2. Move the dumpster and reunite with Jerry

After climbing through the broken window, turn toward the dumpster in the corner. Interact with the Virginia Coin on top of it before moving the dumpster. The coin is optional as a collectible in terms of campaign completion, but this interaction is part of the route that opens the progression sequence.

Pull the dumpster away from the wall, then push it beside the building so Abby can climb onto it. Climb up and sprint-jump across to the next rooftop. Drop down on the right, near the metal archway, and continue along the path until Abby reaches Jerry.

When control returns after the scene, follow Jerry through the zoo grounds. This part is intentionally guided, so remain on the path he takes instead of searching for a separate exit. Continue until Jerry stops and points out tracks on the ground.

  • The Virginia Coin was inspected on the dumpster.
  • The dumpster was pulled out and repositioned beside the building.
  • Abby crossed the rooftops and dropped near the metal archway.
  • Abby has reunited with Jerry and reached the tracks.

3. Complete the tracking lesson and animal-care sequence

Interact with the tracks when the prompt appears. Follow Jerry into the enclosed area and examine the evidence he identifies. Continue moving after each interaction; the route remains linear and Jerry provides the next direction.

Stay with Jerry as he leads Abby farther through the zoo. When he pauses, allow the conversation and examination moments to finish before moving on. Follow the path into the animal-care area. The next events are primarily narrative, involving the injured animal and an infected threat, rather than a prolonged combat arena that must be cleared room by room.

After the animal-care sequence and its accompanying scenes, Abby and Jerry move into an interior hallway. Walk to the doors at the end and pass through both when prompted. The following cutscenes complete Tracking Lesson and transition the story to The Stadium. Do not search for another chapter between the Park flashback and the Stadium.

  • The tracks were inspected when prompted.
  • Jerry was followed through the enclosed zoo route.
  • The animal-care and infected story sequence was completed.
  • Abby passed through both hallway doors.
  • The transition into Abby’s Seattle Day 1 sequence has finished.

4. Follow Manny through the Stadium and get food

The Stadium begins after the Tracking Lesson transition. Abby wakes inside the WLF settlement, and Manny arrives to get her moving. Follow him through the interior corridors and out through the door he uses. This opening is guided; optional conversations may be triggered, but they are not required.

Continue following Manny until you reach the cafeteria. Move to the food line and complete the food interaction. You can speak with nearby residents if you want the optional dialogue, then follow Manny out of the cafeteria and up the stairs.

Enter room 203 when Manny leads you there. Move toward the bed on the right side of the room and interact with Abby’s bag. This triggers the next scene with Manny and Mel. Inspecting other objects in the room is optional, but retrieving the bag is required before the group can leave.

  • Abby followed Manny from her room.
  • The cafeteria was reached and food was obtained.
  • Room 203 was entered.
  • Abby’s bag was retrieved from beside the bed.

5. Reach the kennel, collect Alice and retrieve Abby’s weapons

After Manny and Mel join Abby, follow them through the Stadium’s central living areas. Descend through the market-like section and continue down the stairs. Optional conversations and collectibles can be collected during this walk, but they do not affect story progress.

Continue to the dog area and pass through the gate into the kennel section. Interact with Alice when prompted. Throwing the ball for the other dog is optional. When you are ready to continue, leave through the gate on the right and rejoin Manny and Mel.

The group eventually enters an interior hallway. If you want to search for the optional coin beneath the large wolf painting, do so before using the next door; the route does not freely return to this area after advancing. For required progress, go through the door and continue toward the armory.

At the armory, collect Abby’s weapons. Manny waits near the target-range entrance, but do not start the truck departure yet. The shooting range and the nearby optional exploration come first.

  • The kennel area was reached.
  • Alice was collected.
  • The optional dog-ball activity was either completed or skipped.
  • Abby’s weapons were collected from the armory.
  • The hallway beneath the wolf painting was searched before advancing, if desired.

6. Use the target range and depart in the truck

From the armory, follow the route toward Manny and enter the target range. The shooting activity is optional for campaign completion. You may attempt to beat Manny’s score for its reward, but no winning score is required to advance. Finish the activity or leave when the game allows you to continue.

Before interacting with the truck, return to the garage area and take any optional supplies, conversations or collectibles you want. The departure sequence moves Abby out of the Stadium settlement, so this is the final opportunity to explore this portion of the chapter without using Chapter Select later.

Interact with the back of the truck to begin the departure. The conversation with Mel is scripted. Remain in the vehicle as it leaves the Stadium; the next objective is the Seraphite attack.

  • The target range was reached.
  • The shooting activity was completed or exited without needing a high score.
  • Optional Stadium exploration was finished before departure, if desired.
  • Abby interacted with the truck and left the settlement.

7. Survive the ambush and finish The Stadium

Seraphites attack the truck as it travels through Seattle. Aim at enemies closest to the vehicle or actively firing into it. Prioritize immediate threats rather than distant riders who cannot currently reach Abby. Keep the weapon ready as the truck turns, since attackers can enter the firing angle quickly.

Continue defending the truck while Manny drives through the city. The encounter is scripted and does not use a score or special completion requirement. If Abby dies, reload the checkpoint and repeat the same approach: focus on active nearby attackers, use cover within the truck when necessary and conserve attention for enemies that are actually threatening the vehicle.

The truck eventually crashes. After the crash, follow Manny and Mel toward the bay entrance. Enter the bay door to complete The Stadium. The chapter is not finished merely because the ambush begins or because the truck crashes; the required threshold is crossing into the bay area and advancing until On Foot loads as the next chapter.

  • The pursuing Seraphites were repelled until the scripted crash.
  • Abby followed Manny and Mel after the crash.
  • The bay door was entered.
  • On Foot loaded as the next chapter.
  • The standard Story campaign remained active rather than No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play or Chronological mode.

Before you move on

  • Tracking Lesson chapter 23 began with Abby’s Park flashback.
  • The Park was treated as the opening setting of Tracking Lesson rather than an extra chapter.
  • Abby entered the building through the broken window, moved the dumpster, crossed the rooftops and reunited with Jerry.
  • Abby inspected the tracks and completed the animal-care sequence.
  • The hallway transition finished Tracking Lesson and opened The Stadium.
  • Abby followed Manny to the cafeteria and obtained food.
  • Abby retrieved her bag from room 203.
  • Abby entered the kennel, collected Alice and continued through the gate.
  • Abby collected her weapons from the armory.
  • The target-range activity was completed or exited without requiring a winning score.
  • The truck ambush ended in the scripted crash.
  • Abby entered the bay door and On Foot loaded next.
  • The standard Story campaign was used, with No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play and Chronological mode excluded.

Seattle — Abby Day 1: On Foot to The Coast

Begin this chapter after completing The Stadium and entering On Foot. Abby, Manny and Mel cross an infected warehouse, the Garden Center and a boat-repair building before fighting through a train yard to the Forward Base. Continue through The Forward Base and the Aquarium flashback, then enter Hostile Territory with Manny, search the Chinatown storefronts and survive the Seraphite checkpoint. Winter Visit is a short Aquarium flashback. The Forest strips Abby of her equipment and forces a close-range escape with Lev and Yara before a garage and infected encounter. In The Coast, Abby travels alone through a container yard and a crashed ferry, obtains the Crossbow and reaches the aquarium. The chapter is complete only after the aquarium hallway scene finishes and Return to the Coast becomes the next chapter.

1. Start On Foot and clear the warehouse

This chapter begins when The Stadium has ended and On Foot loads. Follow Manny and Mel into the warehouse, search the opening rooms for materials and collect the supplies near Manny. When the pipe-bomb recipe becomes available, craft one if you have the components. Keep at least one explosive or a shotgun shell available for the larger infected fight later in the building.

Crouch through the first infected area and eliminate isolated enemies quietly when possible. After reaching the shelving, climb upward and sprint-jump across when the route opens. The shelves give way and Abby lands in a larger room containing Runners and a Shambler. Keep moving around the outside of the room so the Shambler cannot pin you against the shelves. Use a pipe bomb, shotgun or other high-damage option when it closes in, then search the room after the encounter.

Follow Manny through the Greenhouse. Search the counters and side areas, climb over the wrecked vehicle and continue to the PNW Boat Repair building. The entrance is blocked. Use the rope near the building to boost Manny, then take the rope he lowers and throw it through the roof opening. Enter, move the cabinet blocking the door and use the workbench if you need to spend parts.

  • Enter On Foot from the completed Stadium chapter.
  • Craft Abby’s pipe bomb if materials allow.
  • Defeat the warehouse infected and Shambler.
  • Use the roof rope to enter the boat-repair building.

2. Cross the boat-repair building and collect the optional Hunting Pistol

Inside the workshop, operate the crank beside the damaged boat door and boost Mel to the higher level. Move the ladder to the wall, climb across the upper route and use it as a bridge to reach the boat. Continue over the catwalk and follow Mel down to the exterior.

Search the trailer on the left before entering the train yard. Its door is locked, so circle behind it and break the window with a bottle, brick or shot. Read the note inside. It gives the safe combination 17-38-07, displayed in the game as 17-38-07. Leave the trailer, pass through the fence and enter the nearby room through the opening in the wall. The safe is inside. Opening it awards the Hunting Pistol, which is optional for story progress but useful for quiet, high-damage shots.

If you skip the safe, the chapter remains completable. Do not confuse the Hunting Pistol with a required key item; the route continues after the train-yard sequence regardless of whether you collect it.

  • Use the workbench before leaving the repair shop if needed.
  • Break into the trailer and read the note.
  • Open the nearby safe with 17-38-07 if you want the Hunting Pistol.
  • Enter the train yard with a retreat route in mind.

3. Survive the train yard and reach The Forward Base

The train yard contains armed Seraphites. Use the rail cars, tall grass and surrounding cover to separate patrols. A stealth approach is possible, but do not remain in one hiding place after an enemy begins searching it. If the group detects Abby, retreat toward the entrance or circle around the rail cars instead of crossing the open center.

At the far end, climb onto the large train car and pass through the locked gate. A larger Seraphite group ambushes Abby after the gate sequence. Take cover in the store or behind the nearby structures, break enemy sightlines and let the WLF reinforcements arrive. You only need to survive this encounter; chasing enemies away from the immediate area wastes ammunition.

When the trucks reach the area, climb into the back of one. This ends On Foot and begins The Forward Base. The Stadium is not part of this chapter: if the chapter list shows On Foot as the current section, the transition has already been completed correctly.

  • Use rail cars and grass to separate train-yard patrols.
  • Fall back to solid cover during the ambush.
  • Board the WLF truck after reinforcements arrive.
  • Confirm that The Forward Base has loaded next.

4. Complete The Forward Base and The Aquarium

The Forward Base is a short required chapter. Follow the base route through the checkpoint, tents and medical area. Search nearby crates and use the workbench if desired, then enter the tent and apartments when the story directs Abby there. Speak with the required characters and watch the scene that completes this chapter. Optional conversations and supplies do not change the route.

The Aquarium follows as a separate flashback chapter. Follow Owen into the water and swim through the submerged passage. After surfacing, climb upstairs, open the shutter and enter the sailboat. Examine the indicated objects if you want the optional interactions, then follow Owen through the aquarium rooms.

At the locked door, use the upper route and continue through the aquarium interior. Follow the objective to the room known as Max’s Place, descend the ladder and complete the hallway scene. This is guided exploration rather than a combat chapter, so do not search for an alternate combat route or assume that every aquarium document is a campaign collectible.

  • Pass through The Forward Base checkpoint and medical area.
  • Finish the required Forward Base scene.
  • Swim through the Aquarium flashback with Owen.
  • Reach Max’s Place and complete the hallway transition.

5. Cross Hostile Territory and reach the checkpoint

Follow Manny from the rooftop and through the first apartment route. After Abby is separated from him, enter the Spicy Dumpling shop and search it before continuing. In the next building, use the open window to reach the Close Quarters Training Manual if you want the associated skill branch. Continue through Tang Fabrics and the connected apartments, moving slowly when the Clicker appears in the tight interior passage.

After the rooftop jump, use the optional guard-tower detour for supplies if you need them, then return to the main route and crawl through the vent. In the infected room, let the moving truck and enemy movement create openings. Keep a retreat path clear rather than standing in the middle of the room.

Continue through the Chinatown storefronts. The Jasmine Bakery safe uses 68-96-89. In Ruby Dragon, climb upstairs, jump toward King Street Relics and drop through the floor. Collect the Double Barrel Shotgun behind the counter before the additional infected arrive. Leave through the rooftops and crawl under the checkpoint gate.

The next area contains armed Seraphites. Use the buildings, elevated paths and narrow entrances to avoid a direct advance through the center. If detected, retreat through the route you used to enter and force enemies into a confined approach. Continue until the story moves Abby toward the Aquarium.

  • Search Spicy Dumpling and the nearby apartment before advancing.
  • Reach the training manual through the open window if desired.
  • Open the Jasmine Bakery safe with 68-96-89 if collecting optional resources.
  • Take the Double Barrel Shotgun from King Street Relics.
  • Survive the Seraphite checkpoint encounter.

6. Finish Winter Visit and The Forest

Winter Visit is a short required Aquarium flashback. Follow Owen, inspect the indicated aquarium areas and complete the Nerf-bow sequence if desired. The high-score challenge is optional. Continue upstairs and through the scene to return to Abby’s present-day storyline.

The Forest begins after Abby is attacked and separated from her equipment. Follow Yara through the woods and fight the Runners with melee attacks when the game limits Abby’s equipment. Keep moving whenever the group advances and do not try to explore the forest during these pursuit sections.

Inside the facility, Abby faces a large Seraphite wielding a sledgehammer. Dodge the hammer swings and counter with melee attacks after the attack sequence ends; avoid trading hits directly. Once the enemy falls, recover Abby’s equipment, use the workbench if needed and follow Lev and Yara through the garage and houses.

Prepare before opening the blocked door where the infected attack. The encounter escalates from Runners to Clickers and then Shamblers. Funnel enemies through doorways when possible, save a pipe bomb for a Shambler and use the shotgun when a Clicker reaches close range. Lev eventually creates an exit through the red vehicle. Follow the children to the trailer. The Forest ends there, and The Coast begins with Abby travelling alone.

  • Complete the Aquarium flashback and optional Nerf-bow challenge if desired.
  • Survive the Forest pursuit and sledgehammer encounter.
  • Recover Abby’s equipment.
  • Defeat the infected waves and reach the trailer with Lev and Yara.
  • Begin The Coast alone after the trailer scene.

7. Cross The Coast, board the ferry and reach the aquarium

At the start of The Coast, Abby is alone. Jump over the blue container, enter the building on the left and search it. Use the workbench before entering the container yard. In the first infected section, eliminate the exposed Runner, then deal with the Clicker and watch for Stalkers approaching from behind the containers. Leave yourself room to retreat instead of fighting with your back against a wall.

Climb through the container route, cross the broken roadway and reach the crashed ferry. Enter through the available opening and search the lower rooms before climbing. Abby obtains the Crossbow during the ferry sequence. Use bolts on exposed infected when a silent kill is worthwhile, but conserve them when enemies can be bypassed or handled with quieter alternatives.

Read the Mutiny Note for the ferry safe combination, 90-77-01. The safe contains a training manual and supplies; opening it is optional. Move through the ferry decks carefully. Clickers, Runners, Stalkers and a Shambler occupy different sections, so pause at stairwells and doorways before committing to a drop or opening a door. Keep the Crossbow ready for isolated targets and save explosives for a crowded encounter.

Exit the ferry and follow the broken roadway toward the aquarium. The aquarium’s front entrance is locked. Circle right, descend and use the open windows to reach the adjoining building. Throw a bottle or brick through the skylight, take the hanging cord through the opening and climb to the roof. Break the second skylight, drop inside and inspect the bag. Follow the interior route, turn off the radio and proceed through the aquarium to the boat and final hallway scene.

The Coast ends when the aquarium sequence finishes. The next chapter is Return to the Coast, which is not part of this chapter’s completion check.

  • Use the opening building’s workbench before the container-yard fight.
  • Defeat or bypass the infected while watching for Stalkers.
  • Obtain the Crossbow on the ferry.
  • Open the ferry safe with 90-77-01 if desired.
  • Reach the aquarium and complete the final hallway scene.
  • Confirm Return to the Coast is the next chapter.

Before you move on

  • On Foot, The Forward Base, The Aquarium, Hostile Territory, Winter Visit, The Forest and The Coast are completed in the campaign chapter list.
  • The On Foot train-yard ambush is finished and The Forward Base has loaded afterward.
  • The Aquarium flashback, Hostile Territory checkpoint, Winter Visit and Forest trailer sequence are complete.
  • Abby has reached the ferry during The Coast and obtained the Crossbow.
  • The ferry sequence and aquarium interior transition are complete.
  • Return to the Coast is the next available chapter, confirming that this chapter’s required route is finished.
  • If the optional safes were opened, the Hunting Pistol safe used 17-38-07, the Jasmine Bakery safe used 68-96-89 and the ferry safe used 90-77-01.

Seattle — Abby Day 2: midgame encounters and survival choices

Abby’s Seattle Day 2 route begins with Return to the Coast, where she backtracks through the highway and garage to reach Yara and Lev. The main sequence then covers The Shortcut, The Descent, Ground Zero, and Return to the Aquarium. Follow Lev across flooded streets and Seraphite-held buildings, cross the skybridges, descend through the infected hotel, recover a breathing mask, and use the flamethrower when groups block the lower floors. At Ground Zero, search the hospital, restore power, collect supplies, and defeat the Rat King before finishing the separated Stalker-like enemy. The chapter ends at the aquarium after the medical supplies are delivered for Yara’s surgery. Optional collectibles and extra supplies can be recovered through Chapter Select; they are not required for story progress.

1. Finish Return to the Coast before starting The Shortcut

The Seattle Day 2 Abby sequence begins with Abby returning for Yara and Lev. Follow the same general route back through the coastal highway area. Pick up the nearby plank and place it across the gap so Abby can cross to the next section, then move down the ramp into the container area. This route is familiar from the previous chapter, but the enemy presence has changed.

Seraphites now occupy the container yard. Use the containers, vehicles, and walls as cover, and deal with the armed enemies one at a time whenever possible. A larger Seraphite with a hammer patrols the area after the initial group. Keep distance, avoid being cornered, and use the shotgun or a throwable when the heavy enemy closes in. You do not need to search every corner before advancing, but collect nearby ammunition and healing items if you can do so without exposing Abby.

Enter the garage through the route used earlier, pass through it, and continue back toward the building where Yara and Lev are waiting. Once Abby reaches them, the game moves into The Shortcut. Return to the Coast has no required collectible detour, so focus on clearing the route and reaching the pair safely.

  • Cross the highway with the plank.
  • Defeat or bypass the Seraphites in the container area.
  • Pass through the garage and reach Yara and Lev.

2. Cross the flooded streets and reach the first Seraphite buildings

After the scene with Yara and Lev, follow Lev through the flooded streets. When you reach the waterfall-like section, enter the barbershop on the right if you want its optional supplies, then jump across the water toward the buildings. Use the stairs and broken floors to climb upward. The route is marked by accessible windows, ledges, and damaged staircases rather than by a single obvious road, so look for the next elevated opening whenever the path seems blocked.

At the apartment route, break through the required windows and move through the rooms toward the freeway. Search side rooms before leaving each apartment; parts, supplements, ammunition, and crafting materials are available here. One apartment contains a safe, but opening it is optional and does not affect progression. If you use it, the combination is 30-23-04.

Continue onto the freeway and follow the path toward Interbay. Seraphites control the buildings and elevated walkways ahead. Crouch behind vehicles and low walls, mark patrol positions with Listen Mode if enabled, and let enemies separate before attacking. If detection occurs, retreat into the building you just cleared instead of fighting on a narrow bridge. Your objective is to reach the route leading into the taller buildings, not to eliminate every enemy in the district.

  • Follow Lev through the flooded streets and climb into the apartments.
  • Search optional rooms before leaving the freeway-side buildings.
  • Reach the Interbay route and continue toward the elevated buildings.

3. Clear the upper buildings and prepare for the hotel descent

Continue climbing through Interbay and the connected upper floors. Some encounters place Seraphites on opposite sides of broken offices and apartments, so use the interior walls to break sightlines. A bow, pistol, or rifle can remove isolated targets quietly, while bricks and bottles can draw a patrol away from the route. If you trigger an alarmed fight, use the rooms behind you as fallback cover rather than remaining exposed on the rooftops.

There are workbenches and supply rooms during The Shortcut. Use a workbench if you have enough parts for an upgrade that benefits the weapons you actually use, but do not spend every part simply because the bench is available. Capacity, reload, stability, and handling upgrades can all be useful; the best choice depends on your current weapon inventory and difficulty. Keep at least one healing item and a close-range option before the final climb.

Follow Lev across the upper route until the pair reaches the tall building and crosses toward the hotel. The path eventually breaks open and Abby falls into the hotel pool area. This begins The Descent. Before entering the hotel’s interior route, take any nearby supplies you can safely reach, because several later doors become one-way after Abby starts moving downward.

  • Reach the upper Interbay buildings with Lev.
  • Use a workbench only after preserving enough parts for later encounters.
  • Enter the hotel pool area to begin The Descent.

4. Find Lev’s breathing mask and descend through the infected building

After Abby falls into the pool, leave the room and move through the exercise area to the stairwell. Search the accessible rooms before passing through the door marked with the number 19. Abby identifies the spore-filled area, and Lev cannot follow her until she finds a breathing mask. Enter the rooms alone and remember the route back; the mask search is deliberately disorienting, and Stalkers appear after Abby picks it up.

When the Stalkers begin moving, do not sprint blindly through the same rooms. Walk backward toward the exit, keep the enemies in front of Abby, and use the shotgun or a melee weapon when one reaches striking distance. Return to Lev after securing the mask, then boost him to the upper floor. He drops a fire hose, which Abby uses to reach lower levels of the building.

Continue down through the ruined hotel. Stalkers can emerge from fungus-covered walls, so check corners before stepping through narrow rooms. A Clicker occupies one section of the descent; move around it when the path allows instead of firing automatically. Later, cross the wooden beam to collect the flamethrower. It is optional for basic progression but extremely useful against clustered infected. Use short bursts and preserve fuel for groups, Shamblers, or an emergency escape.

Keep descending through the rubble until you reach the large infected area containing Clickers, Shamblers, and a Bloater. You can fight through it, but you can also use the layout to slip around some enemies. Throw a brick or bottle away from the exit to pull a dangerous infected off the direct route, then move toward the elevator and continue downward. Follow Lev out of the building and toward the hospital.

  • Recover Lev’s breathing mask from the spore-filled rooms.
  • Use the fire hose to continue the descent.
  • Collect the flamethrower and preserve fuel for dense infected groups.
  • Reach the hospital entrance with Lev.

5. Enter Ground Zero, restore power, and collect the medical supplies

At the hospital, follow the objective route through the restricted areas. The early section contains rooms and corridors with supplies, so search before opening the doors that lead deeper into the facility. The lower hospital is largely one-way, and returning for missed items becomes difficult once Abby enters the infected areas.

After the sequence with Nora, continue through the hospital until Abby reaches the surgery section. Search the rooms around the objective path and locate the generator or power controls. Restoring power unlocks the previously secured doors and gives access to additional supplies, including areas near the corridor with Clickers. Move carefully after power is restored because the noise and newly opened routes increase the danger.

Use stealth for isolated infected when the layout allows it. For groups, the flamethrower is effective at close range, while the shotgun and explosives are better reserved for enemies that block a narrow exit. Before entering the Rat King arena, make sure Abby has healing supplies and at least one weapon capable of creating space. The boss sequence is a point of no easy return, so gather nearby resources first.

  • Search the hospital before committing to the lower route.
  • Restore power in the surgery area.
  • Revisit the newly opened rooms for supplies if it is safe.
  • Enter the Rat King encounter with healing and close-range options.

6. Defeat the Rat King and finish the separated infected

The Rat King fight takes place in a large dark treatment area. Keep moving around the outer edge and use the openings between rooms to avoid its charges. Do not stand in the center waiting for a clear shot. Damage the creature when it is recovering from an attack, then immediately reposition. Fire, explosives, shotgun blasts, and other high-impact attacks are most valuable when they stop the Rat King from closing distance, so prioritize creating an escape opportunity over emptying every weapon at once.

The arena changes as the fight continues. Follow the route through the rooms when the Rat King breaks through the area, and do not stop to loot while it is nearby. If Abby dies, begin circling before the creature reaches the center of the arena and avoid retreating into dead ends. The encounter rewards movement and route awareness more than stationary damage output.

After the main body is defeated, a faster infected separates from it. This second enemy can move through tight spaces and attacks quickly. Keep it in front of Abby, back through the available rooms, and use the shotgun, rifle, or remaining explosives when it commits to an attack. Do not search for supplies until the smaller enemy is dead. Once both enemies are defeated, leave the arena and enter the flooded garage. The garage contains optional supplies, including a small security booth and items in a truck, but they are not required for completion.

  • Circle the Rat King’s arena instead of fighting from the center.
  • Follow the escape route when the boss breaks through the treatment area.
  • Defeat the separated fast infected before looting.
  • Leave Ground Zero with the required medical supplies.

7. Return to the aquarium and complete the chapter transition

After Ground Zero, follow the exit route out of the hospital and continue with Lev. The remaining travel is mostly directed movement and short interactions. At the aquarium, follow Yara through the rooms while looking for Lev. The chapter includes exploration of the aquarium interior, the dog interaction, and the scene involving the shark plush. Follow the prompts and allow the conversations to play rather than trying to leave the area early.

The chapter is complete when the aquarium scenes finish and the game transitions to Seattle Day 3. You do not need to enter No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, or any other Remastered side mode. If you missed supplies or collectibles, use Story, Chapters from the main menu after the chapter has been recorded; those replay options are separate from the ongoing campaign save.

  • Leave the hospital with Lev after collecting the medical supplies.
  • Reach the aquarium and follow Yara through the interior.
  • Complete the aquarium scenes and confirm the transition to Seattle Day 3.

Before you move on

  • Return to the Coast is complete when Abby reaches Yara and Lev and the game begins The Shortcut.
  • The Shortcut, The Descent, and Ground Zero are complete when Abby reaches the next story transition after each section.
  • Ground Zero is complete only after the Rat King and the separated fast infected have both been defeated and Abby leaves with the medical supplies.
  • Return to the Aquarium is complete after Abby follows Yara through the aquarium scenes and the game transitions to Seattle Day 3.
  • For a replay, Story, Chapters should list the Seattle Day 2 Abby sections, including The Shortcut, The Descent, Ground Zero, and Return to the Aquarium. Chapter Select labels can group Return to the Coast separately depending on the menu presentation.
  • A continuing campaign save should load into Abby’s Seattle Day 3 route without requiring No Return, Lost Levels, or another Remastered side mode.

Seattle — Abby Day 3: The Marina, The Island, The Escape and The Confrontation

Abby’s Seattle Day 3 begins at the Aquarium after Return to the Aquarium. Follow Yara through the flooded transit route and storm drain, then cross the marina while avoiding sniper fire and surviving the infected ambush. Pursue the sniper through the bridge and restaurant route to complete The Marina and begin The Island. Cross the Seraphite settlement with Yara, reach her house, then escape Old Town with Yara and Lev. Use the workbench after Lev lowers the ladder, survive the WLF-and-Seraphite battlefield at Haven, ride through the burning settlement and reach the boat. After returning to the Aquarium, enter the theater and follow Ellie into the backstage confrontation. This fight has three phases and requires three successful close-range attacks. Avoid Ellie’s firearms, arrows, glass and trap mines; use stealth or thrown bottles and bricks to create openings. After the third successful attack and following scenes, the story advances to The Farm.

1. Leave the Aquarium and cross the flooded route

The Marina begins after the Aquarium scene. When control returns, turn around and climb the short stairs behind Abby if you want the optional coin. Return to Yara, descend through the elevator shaft and continue to the tram station. Before entering the tram, check to the right of the access ramp near the tires for the second optional coin. These collectibles are not required for story progression.

Enter the tram and search it if you need parts or supplements. Leave through the opposite side and follow the fence toward the flooded section. Drop into the water and move along the seawall. A partially submerged truck has optional supplies nearby. Turn back from the truck and enter the narrow opening in the broken ground. Open the gate for Yara, then crawl through the storm-drain route.

When you climb onto the pier, do not take the ladder immediately. Enter the small food stand beside the route and search the counter for the Marina Note and supplies. Return to the ladder, climb up and continue until Abby reaches the street and reunites with Manny. The Marina’s first objective is complete when you reach this sniper-threatened area.

  • Follow Yara through the tram station and flooded route.
  • Open the storm-drain gate and crawl through the drain.
  • Search the food stand if desired, then climb to the street and reach Manny.

2. Advance through the marina under sniper fire

The sniper controls the long sightline ahead. Stay behind solid cover and move after each shot has passed. The bright aiming flash on the distant bridge indicates the sniper’s firing position; wait for the firing cue to disappear before crossing to the next cover point. Several routes are possible, including water where Abby can move prone or partly submerged, so use whichever path keeps the most obstruction between Abby and the shooter.

Continue with Manny through the marina. When you reach the truck with a ramp at its rear, grab the movable cart inside and pull it toward the building. Use the cart as moving cover while you close the exposed distance. Enter the building and collect supplies only if the area is safe; the objective is to reach the gate where Manny is waiting, not to exhaust every resource location.

Open the gate to trigger the infected ambush. The sniper draws infected toward Abby, so keep the shooter’s line of sight blocked while fighting. Deal with the initial infected, then move upstairs when Manny advances. More Runners and a Clicker appear, followed by another group containing Runners and a Shambler near the bridge route. Use chokepoints, short retreats and explosives when several infected close together. Heal before crossing the next exposed section rather than trying to sprint through while injured.

  • Move only after the sniper’s shot has passed.
  • Pull the cart from the truck and use it as cover.
  • Survive the Runner, Clicker and Shambler encounters before reaching the bridge.

3. Pursue the sniper and transition to The Island

After the infected encounters, follow Manny toward the bridge. Jump across when prompted, enter the building and keep moving forward. The sniper remains dangerous at the far end of the bridge, so do not stop in the open to trade shots. Continue advancing behind cover until the sniper retreats and locks himself inside.

At the locked entrance, move to the right-side white door and enter the restaurant. Follow the interior route to the open door on the right and leave through it. The scene that follows completes The Marina and transitions Abby and Yara to the boat route for The Island.

When The Island loads, follow Yara inland from the shore and climb the long ladder. Optional coins and artifacts can be collected along the route, but none are required to unlock the next objective. Continue past the abandoned WLF position and follow the marked path toward the Seraphite settlement.

  • Reach the bridge without lingering in the sniper’s sightline.
  • Enter the restaurant through the right-side door route.
  • Follow Yara inland after the boat transition to begin The Island.

4. Cross the island settlement and reach Yara’s house

Follow Yara through the island’s paths and logging settlement. The first huts contain optional supplies and collectibles. Continue toward the torch-lit mill and use the nearby cart to reach the required window. This begins the main enemy section of The Island.

The settlement has grass, huts and alternate elevations. Use them to separate Seraphites and avoid entering the center of the area without a retreat path. You do not need to eliminate every enemy if you can reach the required buildings and exits, but you must advance through the mill route and later settlement structures. Search for resources when the patrols move away from your position.

Continue following Yara after the settlement encounter. At the fence, move to the left side and interact with it to squeeze through. Follow the interior route through the hut and onward to Yara’s house. Interact with the door to trigger the story scene. Entering the house completes The Island and begins The Escape.

  • Reach the torch-lit mill and use the cart to enter the next building.
  • Use grass, huts and elevated routes to avoid unnecessary exposure.
  • Squeeze through the fence and enter Yara’s house.

5. Escape Old Town and use the workbench

Leave Yara’s house with Yara and Lev. Follow them through the huts and connected buildings until you reach Old Town. Continue through the convenience-store route and look for the street with the brewery truck. The optional Arkansas Coin is behind the shopping cart on the left before the crawl-under section.

Crawl beneath the brewery truck, help Yara and Lev through the fence, then continue through the building. After the cutscene, search the room for supplies if needed and climb through the window beside the large white door. The following WLF encounter takes place through a waterlogged building with counters, walls and lower routes that support stealth.

Move through the building and exit at the rear. Follow Lev and boost him when prompted. He lowers a ladder into the upper room; climb up and use the workbench there before continuing. Craft healing items and explosives if you have the materials, and upgrade a weapon only if the available parts match your preferred equipment. The workbench is optional for basic progression but is the safest preparation point before the Haven battlefield.

  • Pass through Old Town and crawl under the brewery truck.
  • Exit through the window beside the large white door.
  • Climb the ladder Lev lowers and use the workbench.

6. Survive Haven, escape by boat and return to the Aquarium

After the workbench, follow Lev toward Haven. WLF soldiers and Seraphites are fighting across the settlement. Use grass, side routes and building interiors to let the opposing groups draw attention away from Abby. You can search for supplies, but keep moving toward the restaurant and the route beyond it. Leave through the rear to reach the horse.

Interact with the horse to clear the body blocking it, then ride through the burning settlement. Follow the forward route and do not turn around to loot during the escape. If an enemy grabs the horse, use the displayed prompt to remove the attacker. After Abby is thrown off, continue on foot through the burning buildings and use cover rather than trying to clear every enemy.

Work through the structures toward the docks. A hostile fighter blocks the route to Lev. Dodge the attacks, wait for an opening and use short melee combinations rather than standing in front of the weapon. When Abby is knocked down, complete the removal prompt, then follow Lev beneath the dock to the boat. Interact with the boat to trigger the return trip.

Once Abby and Lev reach the Aquarium, enter through the available side route and continue into the main room. The scene there completes The Escape and begins The Confrontation.

  • Reach the restaurant and take the horse.
  • Ride through Haven and continue on foot after Abby is thrown off.
  • Defeat the dock fighter, enter the boat and reach the Aquarium’s main room.

7. Enter the theater and complete the three-phase confrontation

At the theater exterior, move around to the right side and boost Lev to the ladder. Climb into the building, descend and follow Ellie through the theater until the backstage sequence begins. Abby has limited combat options here, so treat the encounter as a stealth pursuit rather than a conventional firearm fight.

The first phase has Ellie moving with a pistol. Stay behind shelves, counters and other cover, watch her patrol direction and circle behind her. Do not rush directly across her field of view. When her back is turned and the attack prompt appears, land the first successful close-range attack, then immediately reposition as the arena changes.

In the second phase, Ellie uses a shotgun. Use the available bottles or bricks to stun her when stealth alone is unreliable, then close the distance and land the second successful close-range attack. Avoid broken glass, chains and other noisy floor debris because they can reveal Abby before the approach is safe. If Ellie fires, break line of sight instead of trying to cross the open space.

The third phase gives Ellie a bow and lets her place trap mines. Check the floor before rounding corners and avoid mines in narrow approaches. Use cover to make Ellie search, then throw a bottle or brick to create a brief opening, or circle behind her when the route is clear. Land the third successful close-range attack. The encounter ends only after all three attacks have connected; a successful attack in one phase does not replace an attack required in another phase.

After the third attack, follow the prompts and allow the concluding scenes to play. The next story chapter is The Farm.

  • Enter the theater from the right-side ladder route and follow Ellie backstage.
  • Avoid Ellie’s pistol, shotgun, bow, broken glass and trap mines.
  • Land one successful close-range attack in each of the three phases.
  • Allow the post-fight scenes to finish and confirm that The Farm loads next.

Before you move on

  • The Marina is complete when Abby and Yara leave the restaurant route and the story transitions to The Island.
  • The Island is complete when Abby reaches and enters Yara’s house, starting The Escape.
  • The Escape is complete when Abby and Lev return by boat and Abby enters the Aquarium’s main room.
  • The Confrontation is complete only after Abby lands the third successful close-range attack on Ellie and the following scenes begin.
  • This chapter assignment is complete when The Marina, The Island, The Escape and The Confrontation have all finished and the next story chapter, The Farm, loads.

The Farm and aftermath — regrouping, new objectives, and recovery

The Farm is Chapter 41, a short narrative interlude played as Ellie. There are no combat encounters, collectibles, workbenches, weapon upgrades, or required supplies to find. Follow the farmhouse routine, start the record player, retrieve Ollie from the tractor, and help Dina move the sheep into the barn. After the stairwell sequence, return to the farmhouse, close the prompted windows, and complete the guitar interaction. The chapter ends after the following scene and advances to Chapter 42: 2425 Constance, where the Santa Barbara arc continues. Optional room inspections provide context but are not needed for progression.

1. Leave the starting room and reach the kitchen

The Farm begins with Ellie upstairs in the farmhouse. You can first enter the bathroom and inspect the mirror, then visit the art room and examine the poster. These are optional interactions and do not unlock anything required later. When you are ready to continue, use the stairs to go downstairs and enter the kitchen.

Approach the record player in the corner and interact with it to put on a record. After the music starts, move over to Dina and interact with her. Remain in the kitchen until the conversation and short scene finish. Do not search the house for weapons, crafting materials, or an upgrade bench; this chapter is a controlled story sequence rather than a normal supply-gathering area.

  • Leave the upstairs starting area.
  • Optionally inspect the bathroom mirror and art-room poster.
  • Go downstairs to the kitchen.
  • Start the record player and speak with Dina.

2. Retrieve Ollie from the tractor

When the game prompts you to go outside, leave through the front door. Walk across the yard toward the tractor. Interact with the tractor to retrieve Ollie, the toy that is outside near the farm equipment.

After collecting Ollie, return toward the farmhouse. Follow Dina back inside or toward the next prompted position and interact with her when the game requests it. The route is compact, and there is no alternate objective in the surrounding fields. If you walk away from the house, simply return to Dina and continue following the prompts.

  • Leave through the front door.
  • Walk to the tractor.
  • Retrieve Ollie.
  • Return to Dina and continue the prompted conversation.

3. Open the backyard gate and herd the sheep

After the conversation, move to the backyard. The required gate is on the right side of the property. Interact with it to begin the sheep-herding sequence. Ellie does not use a special herding tool; your position determines which way the animals move.

Walk behind the sheep and steadily approach them from the rear, directing them toward the open barn entrance. Avoid running into the front of the group, since that can cause sheep to turn around or spread out. If one breaks away, circle around it and get behind it before walking toward the barn again. The sequence is forgiving, so reposition rather than trying to force every animal forward at once.

Once the sheep are inside, interact with the pen gate to close it. Check the back of the barn afterward. One lamb may remain near the shovel or behind the rest of the animals. Approach it to trigger the next story moment. You do not need to search the barn for supplies or investigate an additional route.

  • Open the backyard gate.
  • Stand behind the sheep and guide them toward the barn.
  • Close the pen gate after the sheep enter.
  • Approach the remaining lamb near the back of the barn.

4. Complete the stairwell sequence

After the barn scene, follow the route into the stairwell. Run or walk down the stairs until you reach the door at the end. Interact with the door when the prompt appears. This starts a linear story sequence, so there is no puzzle or hidden path to solve in the stairwell.

When control returns after the scene, follow the visible path back toward the farmhouse. Stay on the route and continue uphill. You do not need to revisit the barn, search the fields, or prepare an inventory. The next progression trigger occurs at the house after the return sequence.

  • Enter the stairwell after the barn scene.
  • Go down the stairs.
  • Interact with the door at the end.
  • Follow the path back to the farmhouse.

5. Finish the farmhouse interactions

After returning to the property, follow the short scenes around the farmhouse. The horse and nearby household details can be examined if you want additional environmental context, but they are optional. Continue to the prompted window and interact with it to close it.

If you enter the art room, the box beneath the table can also be examined, but it is not required. When the interior scene is complete, go downstairs. At the bottom of the stairs, turn around and enter the room on the right. Approach the window there and interact with it when prompted.

These window actions are progression triggers rather than puzzles. If the chapter appears to have stopped, check the room near the stairs and look for the interaction prompt instead of searching for an exterior route or missing item.

  • Complete the return-to-house scene.
  • Close the first prompted window upstairs.
  • Optionally inspect the art-room box.
  • Go downstairs and enter the room on the right.
  • Close the second prompted window.

6. Complete the guitar sequence and advance to 2425 Constance

After the second window interaction, Ellie sits with the guitar. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the guitar sequence. The game displays the required controls, so use those prompts rather than trying to apply the normal movement or weapon controls.

When the performance ends, let the following scene play until the chapter transition occurs. There is no inventory screen, workbench, combat encounter, or preparation menu between The Farm and the next chapter. The Farm concludes after the closing scene, and the campaign advances to Chapter 42: 2425 Constance.

If you leave the chapter through Chapter Select after completing it, select The Farm again when you want to replay this interlude. For the main-story route, reaching 2425 Constance is the practical confirmation that the Farm objectives were completed.

  • Complete the guitar interaction.
  • Allow the following story scene to finish.
  • Confirm that the next chapter is 2425 Constance.

Before you move on

  • The sheep have been moved into the barn and the pen gate has been closed.
  • The stairwell door sequence has played and Ellie has returned to the farmhouse.
  • Both prompted farmhouse window interactions are complete.
  • The guitar sequence and following scene have finished.
  • The story advances from Chapter 41: The Farm to Chapter 42: 2425 Constance.
  • The Farm contains no required collectibles, combat encounters, workbench upgrades, or resource caches.

Santa Barbara — late-game exploration and confrontations

Santa Barbara is the campaign’s final main-story region. It contains four chapters: 2425 Constance, Pushing Inland, The Resort and The Beach. Ellie first investigates an abandoned neighborhood, then crosses an infected-held route before entering a Rattler compound. The Resort contains the final large combat encounter, including the area where Ellie can release chained infected to create a distraction. The Beach is linear: follow the path to Abby, free her from the pillar, follow her to the boats and complete the final melee fight. After the fight, the game advances to the Epilogue. No collectibles are required to finish these chapters, and the Remastered-only No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play and Chronological Experience are separate from the campaign route.

1. Complete 2425 Constance and open the route through the yellow house

Ellie begins in a residential street. Move forward and inspect the graffiti on the house when the journal prompt appears. Continue down the street toward the house containing infected. Enter carefully and deal with the Clicker inside. A stealth kill with the switchblade is safest if you have the required approach and the Clicker is isolated; otherwise use a quiet ranged attack or retreat outside to reset the encounter. Search the rooms after the area is safe, including the bathroom, then return to the street.

Continue toward the yellow house farther along the road. Its front door is locked, so use the garage entrance. Search the garage and rooms, then leave through the rear sliding door. Check the shed and use the accessible window to enter the locked section of the house. Move through the rooms, unlock the interior door and push the bookshelf aside to reveal the basement route.

Go downstairs and search the basement. Interact with the equipment in the back area to restore power, then use the radio when prompted. The following scene completes 2425 Constance and moves Ellie into Pushing Inland. Do not leave the yellow house by searching for another street exit; the basement, radio and resulting scene are the required progression triggers.

  • Inspect the graffiti to record the opening journal entry if desired.
  • Clear or evade the infected in the first house before looting it.
  • Enter the yellow house through the garage.
  • Move the bookshelf, restore power, use the radio and complete the scene.

2. Cross Pushing Inland and reach the mansion district

At the start of Pushing Inland, search the boat before leaving it. The chapter route leads from the beach up a sandy slope and across several gaps. Follow the climbable path, perform the running jumps when prompted and continue toward the stairs. Climb beneath the broken section, stand on the far side and use the ledge to continue upward. Hop the fence at the top and enter the infected-held neighborhood.

The first infected are around the garages and houses. Use Listen Mode if enabled and stay crouched while identifying the stationary infected. A quiet bow shot, suppressed weapon or stealth takedown can reduce the group without drawing the others. Search the garage and nearby rooms after the immediate threat is gone. Further along, a Clicker and Stalkers occupy the route. Let the Stalkers separate before attacking; if they detect Ellie, retreat through the houses or around the vehicles instead of fighting in the open street.

Continue downhill and clear the remaining infected near the lower road. The chapter does not require a full neighborhood sweep. Once you pass between the vehicles and the scene triggers, Ellie reaches the coast and the game advances to The Resort. Keep at least one healing item if possible, but there is no mandatory resource threshold for continuing.

  • Search the starting boat before climbing inland.
  • Use the garages, houses and vehicles to break infected pursuit.
  • Avoid spending all ammunition on optional infected groups.
  • Reach the lower road and trigger the scene that begins The Resort.

3. Enter The Resort and use the compound’s distractions

The Resort begins after Ellie reaches the Rattler-controlled area. A cutscene provides the Silenced Submachine Gun. Use it for controlled shots against isolated enemies, but do not stand in the open and fire long bursts. Move through the grass and cover, watching the patrols around the vehicles and buildings. The Rattlers use dogs, so keep moving if a dog begins tracking Ellie and avoid crossing directly in front of a patrol.

Follow the route past the train and open the fence gate. In the first compound area, approach the chained infected from cover and interact with the restraint when the prompt appears. Releasing it creates a distraction that can draw the nearby Rattlers away. Use that opening to enter the building at the back rather than attacking every guard immediately.

Go through the building and climb the circular stairs. Search the upper rooms if you want the available supplies, then use the balcony route toward the large round building. The building and surrounding courtyard form the Resort’s final large combat zone. There is no need to preserve ammunition for a later open-area fight, so use traps, explosives and firearms if stealth breaks down. Still, avoid exposing Ellie in the central open space before you know where the guards are positioned.

  • Collect the Silenced Submachine Gun during the opening scene.
  • Move through grass and cover while tracking Rattlers and dogs.
  • Release the chained infected when you can do so from a protected position.
  • Reach the upper building and balcony route.

4. Survive the round-building encounter and reach the prisoners

The large round building and adjacent banquet area contain the Resort’s final major combat encounter. Begin from the upper route when possible. Use the perimeter, tables, walls and doorways to control sightlines. Quietly remove isolated Rattlers, then relocate after each takedown so enemies cannot surround Ellie. If the released infected are still active, they may create additional chaos; use that distraction rather than chasing every enemy into the open.

If the encounter becomes a firefight, use explosive arrows, Molotovs, pipe bombs or other area tools against groups behind cover. Use the shotgun when a guard closes the distance. Dogs can expose Ellie’s position, so eliminate them when they approach or use a throwable to redirect them before moving. The objective is not to collect every item or defeat enemies in a particular order; it is to reach the far side of the combat area and the doors beyond it.

After the fight, search bodies and nearby rooms if you need supplies. Continue through the rear route, descend the stairs and open the double wooden doors. Proceed through the next doors until the scene with the prisoners begins. Ellie discovers Abby’s condition, and the game transitions directly toward The Beach. This is the last large combat encounter of the campaign, so unused resources can be spent here rather than saved for another group of Rattlers.

  • Use the upper route and outer walls to avoid being surrounded.
  • Use explosives or Molotovs when several Rattlers cluster behind cover.
  • Handle dogs before they expose Ellie during a stealth approach.
  • Reach the prisoners beyond the double wooden doors.

5. Follow the beach route, free Abby and complete the final fight

The Beach begins with a linear walk from the Resort toward the shoreline. Follow the path downhill and continue through the open route until Ellie reaches the pillars. Interact with the marked pillar to free Abby. Follow Abby along the beach toward the boats; there are no collectibles or optional combat areas in this chapter.

At the boats, the final one-on-one fight begins. Abby attacks with close-range strikes. Keep enough distance to read her movement, wait for her attack, dodge to the side and counterattack during the recovery window. The fight has multiple stages. Early in the encounter Ellie uses her switchblade, while a later section becomes a hand-to-hand exchange. Abby can use a short combination, so do not counter after the first apparent opening if the attack animation is still continuing.

The game will occasionally display a button prompt between phases. Complete each prompt to continue the encounter. If Ellie is hit repeatedly, stop attacking and concentrate on evasion until Abby finishes her sequence. Continue alternating dodge and counterattack until the scene changes. When the final interaction is available, complete it and allow the boat sequence to play. The Beach then ends and Chapter 46, the Epilogue, begins.

  • Follow the linear path to the marked pillar.
  • Interact with the pillar to release Abby.
  • Dodge Abby’s attacks before counterattacking.
  • Complete the button prompts between fight phases.
  • Finish the boat sequence to trigger the Epilogue.

Before you move on

  • The Resort ends after Ellie reaches the prisoners and the game transitions to The Beach.
  • The Beach ends after the final Abby encounter and boat sequence.
  • The game then loads Chapter 46, Epilogue. Complete the Epilogue through its final scenes rather than stopping immediately after Santa Barbara.
  • After the ending has been saved, return to the main menu and confirm that Chapter Select lists the completed campaign chapters, including 2425 Constance, Pushing Inland, The Resort and The Beach.
  • If you use Chapter Select for missed items, keep a completed-story save available. Loading an earlier chapter can alter the active progression state, so do not overwrite the completed save you intend to use for later chapter access.
  • No completion of No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play or Chronological Experience is required for the requested main-campaign goal.

Epilogue and completion — final scenes and ending checks

After The Beach, Ellie returns alone to the abandoned farmhouse. Cross the field, enter the house, and go upstairs to the Art Room or workshop on the right. Examine Joel’s guitar and complete the short story guitar sequence. The game then plays the final flashback with Joel, returns to the farmhouse, and shows Ellie leave the guitar behind before walking away. This chapter has no combat, required supplies, collectibles, crafting, alternate route, or boss encounter. Let the closing scenes and transition to the credits finish. Then protect the completed campaign save and use Chapter Select from that completed state to confirm that the late-game chapters, including The Beach and Epilogue, remain available. Chapter Select is a replay tool tied to the save state; it should not be described as a feature newly unlocked only by completing the story. No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Speedrun Mode, and Chronological mode are separate Remastered content and are excluded from this campaign completion check.

1. Cross the field and enter the farmhouse

The Epilogue begins immediately after The Beach with Ellie standing outside the farmhouse. Walk forward across the field toward the house. There is no enemy encounter, stealth section, weapon check, or environmental puzzle on this approach, so keep moving toward the building rather than searching the surrounding field.

Enter the farmhouse through the available entrance and move through the empty lower rooms. The house is largely cleared out, and the chapter does not contain a supply run or an objective that requires examining every room. If an area appears to have nothing useful in it, continue through the interior and look for the staircase.

Go upstairs when the route opens. The required destination is the Art Room or workshop on the right side of the upper floor. The room is recognizable because it still contains Ellie’s belongings, including drawings and other personal items, while most of the farmhouse is bare. This room, not a downstairs room or a separate outdoor route, contains the story interaction.

  • Walk across the field to the farmhouse.
  • Enter the house and pass through the empty lower rooms.
  • Use the staircase to reach the upper floor.
  • Enter the Art Room or workshop on the right.

2. Examine Joel’s guitar and complete the story interaction

In the upstairs room, approach Joel’s guitar until the interaction prompt appears. Examine the guitar to begin the final playable guitar sequence. The game uses the same guitar interaction system seen earlier in the campaign; this is a required story event, not Guitar Free Play from the Remastered main menu.

If you are using the standard controls, select the highlighted guitar note with the left stick and strum across the DualSense touchpad. Naughty Dog’s guitar guidance identifies the white outline as the note needed for story progression. If the sequence is difficult to read or perform, Guitar Vibration Cues can indicate the correct note, and the Skip Puzzle option can be enabled through the accessibility settings.

Continue the sequence until the game advances on its own. Do not leave the room looking for a second objective once the guitar interaction has begun. If no prompt appears, reposition Ellie beside the guitar and confirm that you are examining the instrument in the upstairs Art Room or workshop rather than another object in the farmhouse.

This guitar sequence is separate from Guitar Free Play. Guitar Free Play is an optional Remastered mode with additional playable instruments and characters; it is not required for the Epilogue, the ending, or the campaign save.

  • Approach the guitar in the upstairs Art Room or workshop.
  • Use the interaction prompt to examine it.
  • Complete the story guitar sequence or use Skip Puzzle if required.
  • Wait for the scene to advance before leaving the room.

3. Let the final flashback and departure scene finish

After Ellie plays the guitar, the game presents the final Joel and Ellie flashback. The flashback is a story sequence rather than a new playable combat section. Allow it to proceed without quitting or returning to the main menu.

The game then returns to the farmhouse in the present. Ellie leaves Joel’s guitar behind and walks away from the property. There is no final decision, alternate route, secret boss, or additional collectible sweep after the guitar sequence. Once the departure scene is complete, the story transitions to its ending presentation and credits.

You can let the credits run normally. The practical requirement is to remain in the game until the ending transition has completed and the game has had an opportunity to write the post-story state. If you stop before the guitar interaction, during the flashback, or before Ellie’s departure scene finishes, the Epilogue has not been fully completed for this guide’s verification purpose.

The Epilogue contains no required combat, crafting, weapon upgrades, supplements, workbenches, safes, trading cards, coins, or journal entries. Optional wandering in the farmhouse does not add a separate completion objective.

  • Allow the final flashback to play through.
  • Watch the return to the present-day farmhouse.
  • Confirm that Ellie leaves the guitar and walks away.
  • Remain in the game through the ending transition or credits.

4. Preserve the completed campaign save

After the ending transition, return to the main menu and open Load Game. Identify the save associated with the finished campaign. Depending on the save list and how you played, the label and presentation may vary, so use the late-story position and completed status rather than relying on the Continue command alone.

Preserve this completed state before using Chapter Select. The game’s chapter replay system is tied to the selected save state. Starting an earlier chapter can create or activate a progression state that no longer exposes later chapters from that active save. This does not mean the campaign was undone; it means the menu is now reading a save positioned earlier in the story.

If you want to replay chapters for collectibles, encounters, or practice, first make sure the completed campaign save remains available in Load Game. After replaying an earlier chapter, return to the menu and reload the preserved completed save before checking later chapters again. Do not overwrite or delete the completed save while experimenting with Chapter Select.

A manual backup is useful if you maintain several runs or difficulty settings. The essential requirement is not a particular filename; it is retaining a save that represents the finished story and can be loaded after chapter replay.

  • Open Load Game after the ending transition.
  • Locate the save representing the finished campaign.
  • Keep that completed save intact.
  • Reload it after replaying any earlier chapter.

5. Verify Chapter Select and separate Remastered extras

With the completed campaign save preserved or reloaded, open Chapter Select from the main menu. Confirm that the late-game story sequence is represented, including 2425 Constance, Pushing Inland, The Resort, The Beach, and Epilogue. The exact menu grouping can depend on the selected save and chapter screen, so verify the story chapters rather than expecting a special completion badge.

This check should be understood as save-state verification, not as a claim that Chapter Select appears only after the Epilogue. Chapter Select records the chapters available from the relevant campaign progress. After completing the Epilogue, the preserved completed save should show access to the reached late-game chapters and Epilogue. If the menu instead stops at an earlier chapter, leave Chapter Select, open Load Game, and reload the completed campaign save before checking again.

Do not use No Return results as evidence of story completion. No Return is the Remastered roguelike survival mode and uses separate randomized runs. Lost Levels are unfinished development sections, while Guitar Free Play is a separate music mode. Speedrun Mode and Chronological mode are also separate presentations or modes and are outside the requested original narrative-order campaign route.

The campaign completion check is therefore concrete: the Epilogue’s guitar interaction, final flashback, and departure scene have finished; the game has reached its ending transition; Load Game still contains the completed campaign state; and Chapter Select, when viewed from that preserved state, includes the late-game story chapters and Epilogue.

  • Open Chapter Select from the main menu.
  • Confirm that the late-game chapters and Epilogue are listed from the completed state.
  • Return to Load Game and verify that the completed campaign save remains intact.
  • Do not count No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Speedrun Mode, or Chronological mode as required story progress.

Before you move on

  • Ellie has crossed the field and entered the farmhouse.
  • Ellie has reached the upstairs Art Room or workshop and examined Joel’s guitar.
  • The story guitar sequence has completed.
  • The final Joel and Ellie flashback has played through.
  • Ellie has left the guitar behind and departed the farmhouse.
  • The ending transition or credits has begun.
  • Load Game contains the completed campaign save from this run.
  • Chapter Select, when checked from the preserved completed save, includes the late-game story chapters and Epilogue.
  • No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Speedrun Mode, or Chronological mode have been mistaken for required campaign objectives.

THE NEXT SAVE POINT

Finishing up

You have played through the Epilogue and reached the ending scenes that conclude the standard campaign.

The completed campaign save remains preserved in Load Game, and Chapter Select shows the late-game chapters and Epilogue from that save.

Story progression has been recorded; chapter-select access and the completed save are the relevant campaign verification checks. Collectible cleanup and optional Remastered modes are outside this guide’s completion goal.

No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, Speedrun Mode and Chronological mode were not required for the main-story route.

Keep a reliable backup of the completed save before using Chapter Select for optional revisits or cleanup.
