Before you begin
You are starting Pokémon Ultra Moon on Nintendo 3DS.
Follow the required route through Melemele and Akala, complete the first Aether Paradise visit, then clear Ula'ula and Nanu's Grand Trial before returning to Aether Paradise for the second infiltration.
On Poni, complete the Vast Poni Canyon Dragon Trial, use the Altar of the Moone, reach Ultra Megalopolis and defeat Ultra Necrozma before Mina's Trial, Hapu's Grand Trial and the Pokémon League.
After the Elite Four, Hau is the final Champion challenger in Ultra Moon. The post-game then adds the Stakataka investigation, Team Rainbow Rocket, Ultra Warp Ride hunts, Zygarde assembly and Battle Tree activities.
Save before static encounters and major battles, and use a balanced team with controlled damage, status support and answers to Ultra Necrozma's coverage.
Set yourself up for the run
Keep at least four reliable Pokémon through the whole story with varied type coverage (one bulky Rock/Steel or Water tank, one fast Special Attacker, one bulky physical attacker, one utility/support).
Preserve HMs/ride Pokémon as required by story progression; many ride abilities are mandatory.
Hold and conserve key healing items (Hyper Potions/Full Restores) and status removers; the story throws consecutive mandatory battles where shop access may be limited.
Use the PC box system to keep a copy of your main team before major plot events.
If you intend to soft-reset for shinies/versions, save immediately before any forced encounter (especially the Ultra Recon Squad/Poipole/Necrozma events).
Track Z-Crystals and Totem Stickers as you go; several Z-Crystals are given across trials and story nodes and some rare Z-Crystals are only available at fixed story moments.
If you plan to complete the Pokédex or capture specific version exclusives, pause main progression to use Island Scan or revisited routes — many post‑game legendaries and Ultra Beasts are accessed via Ultra Warp Ride, which is only available after certain story beats.
Familiarize yourself with the Poke Bank/transfer restrictions for fused Necrozma forms (fused forms have specific trade/deposit limits).
If you intend to move Pokémon to other games later, capture before forced fusions or check current transfer rules.
Expect a difficulty spike near the endgame (the Necrozma sequences and Elite Four).
Level your team steadily; 8–10 levels above local trainers makes the late main‑story boss fights far more reliable.

First Steps and Best Starter Choices
Choose your starter, establish a balanced early party, collect the first supplies and TMs, and prepare for Captain Ilima’s Verdant Cavern trial in Pokémon Ultra Moon. The trial ends with a level 12 Totem Alolan Raticate, so secure Fighting, Bug or Fairy coverage before entering.
Choose your starter in Iki Town
After the opening events on Route 1 and the Mahalo Trail, return to Iki Town with Professor Kukui. He presents Rowlet, Litten and Popplio, and Hau chooses the starter that is weak to yours. The starter determines your early battle style but does not change the story route or the order of the island challenge.
Rowlet is Grass/Flying and begins with Leafage and Peck. Leafage is useful against Water- and Ground-types, while Peck gives immediate Flying damage. Rowlet has a comfortable matchup against several early wild Pokémon, but Grass attacks are not especially helpful against the Normal/Dark Alolan Raticate used in Ultra Moon’s first trial.
Litten is Fire and can obtain Double Kick early, giving it a valuable Fighting option for the first Totem battle. This makes Litten the most straightforward starter if you want an answer built into the starter line rather than relying on a capture. It is still worth adding a Water- or Flying-type teammate for broader coverage.
Popplio is Water and provides reliable special damage against Fire-, Rock- and Ground-types. It lacks an immediate super-effective attack against Totem Alolan Raticate, so pair it with Makuhita, Cutiefly, a Fighting-capable Pokémon or another teammate with Bug or Fairy attacks.
- Choose Rowlet, Litten or Popplio in Iki Town.
- Use the first Hau battle to learn your starter’s moves and ability without spending unnecessary healing items.
- Plan to add Fighting, Bug or Fairy coverage before entering Verdant Cavern.
Build the first four party slots
Once you regain control on Route 1, capture several Pokémon instead of allowing the starter to handle every battle. Pikipek is a useful early Flying attacker. Alolan Rattata and Yungoos provide dependable physical damage, although both overlap with the Normal-type portion of the first Totem encounter. Grubbin supplies Bug coverage and can remain useful after Melemele.
Makuhita is available on Route 2 and is one of the best simple answers to Totem Alolan Raticate. Its Fighting attacks exploit the Totem’s Dark/Normal typing. Cutiefly, also available in the early Melemele areas, provides Bug and Fairy coverage. Abra can be found around Hau’oli City and Route 2, but it is difficult to train before it has stronger attacks, so treat it as optional rather than essential.
Rockruff is another sturdy early choice, but its relevant early location is Ten Carat Hill rather than Route 1. You can visit that area when the story allows access. A practical first four are the starter, Pikipek or Rockruff, Makuhita and Grubbin or Cutiefly. Rotate them through trainer battles and keep the team reasonably close in level instead of allowing one Pokémon to become several levels stronger than the others.
- Catch at least three additional Pokémon before beginning Ilima’s trial.
- Include Makuhita, Litten or another Pokémon with a reliable Fighting move if possible.
- Use Route 1 and Route 2 trainers for experience before repeatedly fighting wild Pokémon.
- Keep the main party close in level so a critical hit does not end the trial attempt.
Clear the Trainers’ School and collect the first TMs
Follow the story to the Trainers’ School on Route 1. Defeat the four required student trainers, then battle Teacher Emily. Lillie can heal the party inside the school if necessary. After the student battles, Rising Star Joseph gives you TM01 Work Up, and Teacher Emily gives you five Great Balls after her battle.
Work Up raises Attack and Special Attack. It is most useful on a Pokémon whose attacking stat matches the move it will use afterward, but it is optional for Verdant Cavern. Collect the Potion, Quick Claw, Antidote, Paralyze Heal and other visible school items while moving between the battles. Do not spend your entire supply budget immediately; early Potions, status cures and Poké Balls matter more than optional purchases.
Continue into Hau’oli City and heal at the Pokémon Center. Use the Poké Mart to buy Poké Balls, Potions and status cures. TM49 Echoed Voice is in the fenced area northwest of the Hau’oli City Marina; enter through the gate south of the Photo Club. Echoed Voice is a neutral special attack and is optional, but it can help a Pokémon whose starting moves are weak.
- Obtain TM01 Work Up from Rising Star Joseph.
- Defeat Teacher Emily and receive five Great Balls.
- Collect TM49 Echoed Voice in the fenced area near the Hau’oli City Marina.
- Heal in Hau’oli City and buy enough Poké Balls, Potions and status cures for Route 2.
Use Route 2 as the final preparation area
After the Hau’oli City events involving Team Skull and Captain Ilima, travel north along Route 2. Battle the visible trainers for experience, inspect the grass for Makuhita and Cutiefly, and visit Hau’oli Cemetery if you want extra battles and items. Big Wave Beach is optional at this stage; some of its deeper access depends on later Ride abilities.
Continue to the Pokémon Center near Verdant Cavern. During the story scene there, you receive three Revives. Heal immediately, purchase additional supplies and arrange the party so a Fighting-capable Pokémon is ready near the front. A team in roughly the level 10–12 range is suitable for the first trial, with the Pokémon intended to fight the Totem preferably at the upper end of that range.
Save before speaking to Ilima outside Verdant Cavern. You may leave the trial before the trial guide opens the final exit, but leaving resets the trial’s den progress. After the guide permits passage to the Totem’s Den, you can leave without resetting the completed trial section.
- Battle enough Route 2 trainers to bring the main party into roughly the level 10–12 range.
- Receive the three Revives during the Pokémon Center story scene.
- Heal and save before starting Ilima’s trial.
- Carry at least one super-effective Fighting, Bug or Fairy attack.
Complete Ilima’s Verdant Cavern trial
Enter Verdant Cavern from Route 2 and listen to Ilima’s instructions. Before the trial is completed, ordinary wild encounters do not appear in the cavern; the trial Pokémon are the relevant encounters. Examine the nearby den where the first Pokémon disappeared and defeat the level 11 Alolan Rattata.
After that battle, move right to collect the Super Potion, then go upward and inspect the rock in the middle for a Revive. Approach the next den and defeat the second level 11 Alolan Rattata. If an Oran Berry sparkle appears after the battle, inspect it. Take the ramp on the left and follow the upper path downward to collect TM31 Brick Break. Teach it to Makuhita or another compatible physical attacker if doing so improves your Totem matchup.
Cross the wooden bridge and continue through the dens and ramps. Collect the Super Potion near the upper hole and the X Defense on the lower route if you want the extra items. One of the Team Skull Grunts battles you with a level 11 Drowzee; the second grunt does not initiate a normal battle. After the grunt sequence, inspect the final den to fight the level 11 trial Alolan Raticate.
Continue to the trial guide and enter the Totem’s Den. Touch the Normalium Z on the pedestal to start the boss fight. Ultra Moon’s Totem Alolan Raticate is level 12 and begins with an aura that boosts its stats. It can call a level 10 Alolan Rattata as an ally. Defeat the ally quickly if it is creating dangerous two-on-one pressure, then use Double Kick, Low Kick or Brick Break against the Totem. Bug and Fairy attacks are also super effective. If no super-effective move is available, use your strongest neutral attack, keep the active Pokémon healthy and avoid spending several turns on setup while both enemies are present.
After winning, Ilima gives you the Normalium Z and 10 Great Balls, then heals your party. Poké Marts now stock Great Balls and Super Potions. Wild Pokémon can also be encountered in Verdant Cavern, including Alolan Diglett, Zubat and Noibat in Ultra Moon. Leave the cavern after the Ultra Recon Squad and Professor Kukui scenes; Ilima opens the barrier to Route 3, which is the next story route.
- Defeat the two level 11 trial Alolan Rattata.
- Defeat the level 11 trial Alolan Raticate and the level 11 Team Skull Drowzee battle.
- Defeat level 12 Totem Alolan Raticate and its level 10 Alolan Rattata ally.
- Collect the Normalium Z from the pedestal.
- Receive 10 Great Balls from Ilima and confirm that the party has been healed.
- Leave through the newly opened route toward Route 3.
Before you move on
- A starter has been selected and is being trained alongside at least three additional usable party members.
- TM01 Work Up has been obtained from Rising Star Joseph at the Trainers’ School.
- TM49 Echoed Voice has been collected from the fenced area near the Hau’oli City Marina.
- Poké Balls, Potions and status cures are stocked, and the party has been healed at the Route 2 Pokémon Center.
- The two level 11 trial Alolan Rattata and the level 11 trial Alolan Raticate have been defeated.
- The level 12 Totem Alolan Raticate and its level 10 Alolan Rattata ally have been defeated.
- The Normalium Z and Ilima’s 10 Great Balls have been obtained.
- The Route 3 barrier is open and the next Melemele story objective is available.

Melemele Island: Route 3, Hala’s Grand Trial and Cleanup
Begin with Captain Ilima’s trial already complete and the northern Route 3 barrier open. Follow the route to Melemele Meadow and Seaward Cave, rescue Nebby, defeat Ultra Recon Squad Soliera and Hau, then return to Iki Town for Hala’s Melemele Grand Trial. After earning Fightinium Z and the Tauros Charge Ride Pager ability, revisit optional Melemele areas and depart from Hau’oli City for Akala Island.
1. Cross Route 3 and reach Melemele Meadow
Leave the completed trial area and follow the newly opened northern section of Route 3. Battle the trainers on the route if you need experience, and check the roadside item locations while moving toward the large meadow entrance. Ultra Moon can produce Vullaby in the shadow encounters beneath the overhanging rocks on Route 3, making it a useful optional Flying- and Dark-type addition if your team lacks either role.
Continue north until the story directs you toward Melemele Meadow. You can explore the flower fields for items and optional trainer battles, but the required objective is to find Lillie. Approach her in the meadow to learn that Nebby has escaped again. Follow the opening toward the southwest side of the flowers, where the entrance to Seaward Cave is located.
Heal before entering if several team members are injured. The next required battle is against an Ultra Recon Squad member, and there is no reason to risk reaching the story encounter with a weakened lead Pokémon.
- Confirm the Route 3 barrier is open.
- Reach Melemele Meadow and speak with Lillie.
- Use the Route 3 shadows for Vullaby only if the encounter is useful.
- Enter Seaward Cave through the meadow entrance.
2. Find Nebby in Seaward Cave
Follow the main cave path downward toward the water. Nebby is waiting near Lillie at the lower section of the cave, where Ultra Moon’s Ultra Recon Squad members Phyco and Soliera are present. Soliera sends out a level 13 Furfrou and must be defeated before the story can continue. This is a trainer battle, not a capture encounter.
Furfrou is a pure Normal type. Fighting-type attacks are the most direct answer, although any reliable neutral attacker can win because the opposing Pokémon is only level 13. Watch for accuracy-reducing moves and avoid depending on a single physical attacker if its accuracy has been lowered. Once Soliera’s Furfrou is defeated, the Ultra Recon Squad explains more about Nebby and dangerous Ultra Wormholes.
After the dialogue, speak to Nebby as directed. Lillie then accompanies you back through the cave. The story route leads back toward Melemele Meadow rather than requiring you to solve a new puzzle. Seaward Cave has optional side paths and items, but water-locked sections remain unavailable until later Ride abilities, so do not delay the story trying to reach every item now.
- Reach Nebby at the lower section of Seaward Cave.
- Defeat Soliera’s level 13 Furfrou.
- Complete the Ultra Recon Squad dialogue.
- Follow Lillie and Nebby back toward Melemele Meadow.
3. Defeat Hau on Route 3 and return to Iki Town
Exit through the meadow and return to Route 3. Hau meets you soon afterward and challenges you to another battle. His fixed team includes Noibat at level 11 and Pikachu at level 12. His third Pokémon is the starter with a type disadvantage to your chosen starter and is level 13: Popplio if you chose Rowlet, Rowlet if you chose Litten, or Litten if you chose Popplio.
Use the matchup rather than relying only on your starter. Rock- or Ice-type attacks are useful against Noibat, Ground-type attacks are effective against Pikachu, and the appropriate super-effective move handles Hau’s starter. If you use a Ground-type Pokémon against Pikachu, remember that Pikachu’s early moves are not dangerous enough to justify an overcomplicated setup; a clean knockout is preferable.
After defeating Hau, continue south along Route 3 and take the path back toward Iki Town. You do not need to return to Melemele Meadow or Seaward Cave again for the main story. In Iki Town, approach Hala when the game directs you to begin the Melemele Grand Trial. Save before speaking to him if you want a convenient retry point.
- Defeat Hau’s level 11 Noibat.
- Defeat Hau’s level 12 Pikachu.
- Defeat his level 13 disadvantaged starter.
- Return to Iki Town and save before Hala’s battle.
4. Prepare for Hala’s Melemele Grand Trial
Hala uses Machop at level 15, Makuhita at level 15, and Crabrawler at level 16. A practical team range is level 15 or 16, although a well-built lower-level team can succeed with type advantage. Flying-, Psychic-, and Fairy-type attacks are the most useful coverage. Pikipek, Wingull, and other Flying attackers are especially valuable because all three of Hala’s Pokémon are vulnerable to Flying-type damage.
Crabrawler is the main threat because it knows Power-Up Punch and can increase its Attack while dealing damage. Focus your strongest super-effective attack on it rather than allowing several turns for its power to rise. Machop and Makuhita can also use Fighting-type attacks, so do not leave a fragile Normal-, Rock-, or Dark-type Pokémon in front of them unless it is finishing the battle.
The game’s story flow makes recovery straightforward, but you should still heal before starting. If you lose, use the Iki Town or Route 2 Pokémon Center, then train on Route 2 or Route 3 and return. Keep a few Potions and status cures available, but do not spend rare recovery items merely to avoid one short training loop.
- Bring Flying-, Psychic-, or Fairy-type coverage.
- Aim for approximately levels 15–16 across the active team.
- Save before entering Hala’s battle.
- Prioritize Crabrawler before Power-Up Punch boosts accumulate.
5. Defeat Hala and unlock Tauros Charge
Defeat Hala to complete the Melemele Grand Trial. He awards the Fightinium Z Crystal and provides the Ride Pager upgrade that allows you to ride Tauros. Tauros Charge lets you smash the large rocks that blocked several earlier paths. The ability is required for optional exploration, not for continuing immediately to Akala.
Do not sell or discard Fightinium Z. It is a permanent trial reward, and it gives a compatible Fighting-type Pokémon access to a powerful Z-Move. You can also use the newly available Tauros Charge in later battles and for breaking exploration obstacles, but remember that Ride Pokémon do not occupy a party slot.
- Defeat Machop, Makuhita, and Crabrawler.
- Receive Fightinium Z.
- Receive access to Tauros Charge through the Ride Pager.
- Heal before beginning optional exploration.
6. Clean up Melemele and leave for Akala
Use Tauros Charge to revisit the blocked sections of Ten Carat Hill, Route 1, and Verdant Cavern. Ten Carat Hill contains optional encounters and TM23 Smack Down in an area that was previously inaccessible. Verdant Cavern has a later blocked section containing TM46 Thief, along with additional items and wild Pokémon. Seaward Cave also has a Tauros-blocked item route, including an Expert Belt, but none of these rewards is required for the story.
You may also collect any Melemele Totem Stickers that were blocked before Tauros became available. The stickers are optional and do not prevent departure from the island, but they contribute to Samson Oak’s Totem Pokémon rewards. Prioritize healing, useful TMs, and items over exhaustive exploration if you want to continue quickly.
When you are finished, return to Hau’oli City. Heal at the Pokémon Center and go to the marina. Speak with the people involved in the island-travel scene, then board the boat for Akala Island. The next chapter begins on Akala, so do not continue searching Route 3 for another mandatory objective after the boat departure.
- Use Tauros Charge in Ten Carat Hill and other blocked Melemele paths.
- Collect TM23 Smack Down and TM46 Thief if desired.
- Pick up newly accessible Totem Stickers if pursuing Samson Oak’s rewards.
- Heal at Hau’oli City and board the boat to Akala Island.
Before you move on
- The player began this chapter with Ilima’s trial and the Totem Alolan Raticate already defeated.
- The Melemele Meadow search is complete and Nebby has been recovered from Seaward Cave.
- Soliera’s level 13 Furfrou has been defeated.
- Hau’s Route 3 battle has been won.
- Hala’s Melemele Grand Trial has been completed.
- Fightinium Z is in the Bag and Tauros Charge is available on the Ride Pager.
- Optional Melemele cleanup has been completed or deliberately postponed.
- The party is healed and the player has boarded the boat from Hau’oli City to Akala Island.

Akala Island: Sheltered Routes, Totems and Trial Secrets
Complete Lana's Brooklet Hill trial, Kiawe's Wela Volcano Park trial, Mallow's Lush Jungle trial and Olivia's Rock-type Grand Trial. After Olivia, follow the required Hano Grand Resort visit and first Aether Paradise tour, defeat the level 27 uncatchable Nihilego encounter, receive TM29 Psychic from Wicke, and ride the ferry to Malie City on Ula'ula Island. Stop there so the next chapter can begin with the Ula'ula Island story.
Prepare in Heahea City and reach Brooklet Hill
After arriving in Heahea City, heal at the Pokémon Center and buy Super Potions, Antidotes, Paralyze Heals and Poké Balls. Follow Route 4 to Paniola Town, complete the Stoutland registration sequence at Paniola Ranch, and continue through Route 5 toward Brooklet Hill. Battle the available trainers so experience is spread across several usable Pokémon instead of being concentrated on one team member.
A party around levels 18 to 20 is appropriate for Lana's trial. Mudbray supplies Ground coverage for later battles, Magnemite offers useful resistances and Electric attacks, and a Grass- or Electric-type Pokémon helps against Water-types. Heal at the Route 5 Pokémon Center before entering Brooklet Hill and keep at least one Pokémon with reliable direct damage.
- Heal and restock in Heahea City or at the Route 5 Pokémon Center.
- Raise several team members to approximately levels 18 to 20.
- Carry reliable Electric, Grass, Ground, Flying or neutral damage.
Complete Lana's Brooklet Hill trial
Enter Brooklet Hill and speak with Lana. Follow the downhill water route and inspect the splashing spots. Most targets are Wishiwashi; defeating the required Pokémon clears the way forward. A wrong splash can trigger a Dewpider battle, so use healing items if repeated encounters leave the party weakened. At the bottom, enter the Totem's Den after the rain begins.
Ultra Moon's Totem Araquanid is level 20, Water/Bug, and starts with a Speed boost. Its battle moves are Aurora Beam, Bubble, Bite and Leech Life, and it holds a Wacan Berry. It can call a level 18 Dewpider or level 18 Masquerain. Electric and Flying attacks are useful. Grass damage is reduced by Araquanid's Bug typing, and the Wacan Berry weakens the first super-effective Electric attack. Remove an ally if Sticky Web, Stun Spore, Scary Face or Tailwind is disrupting the battle, but do not spend several turns setting up while Araquanid remains healthy.
After victory, Lana gives the Waterium Z, a Fishing Rod and 10 Dive Balls. If the battle goes badly, return to the Route 5 Pokémon Center, heal, and train against the optional trainers on Route 5 or Brooklet Hill before trying again.
- Defeat the required Wishiwashi encounters and reach the Totem's Den.
- Defeat Totem Araquanid and its called Dewpider or Masquerain.
- Receive the Waterium Z, Fishing Rod and 10 Dive Balls.
Open Route 6 and clear Kiawe's Wela Volcano Park trial
After Lana's trial, return through Paniola Ranch and interact with the Sudowoodo blocking the southern road. In Ultra Moon, Soliera of the Ultra Recon Squad battles you with a level 20 Poipole after the road opens. Heal before triggering the fight if needed. Continue through Route 6, Royal Avenue and Route 7 to Wela Volcano Park.
Use the healing attendant beside the trial entrance before starting Kiawe's trial. Levels 20 to 22 are a reasonable target. The park contains optional items including a Hyper Potion, Antidote, Float Stone, TM39 Rock Tomb and Burn Heal. The Totem Sticker beneath the breakable rock behind the entrance sign requires Tauros Charge, so leave it for later if that Ride ability is not available yet.
Kiawe's trial asks you to compare Alolan Marowak dances. Watch each performance, identify the changed detail and select the matching answer. A wrong answer starts a battle, but the trial continues after you win. The final sequence includes a Hiker battle before the Totem encounter, so heal at the entrance first and carry status cures.
Ultra Moon's Totem Alolan Marowak is level 22, Fire/Ghost, holds a Thick Club and begins with a Speed boost. Its moves are Flame Wheel, Detect, Hex and Brick Break. It calls a level 20 Salazzle. Water, Ground, Rock and Dark attacks are useful. Defeat Salazzle promptly if Poison Gas, Venoshock or Torment is disrupting your turns, then focus on Marowak. Winning grants the Firium Z, 10 Quick Balls and access to Charizard Glide.
- Defeat Soliera's level 20 Poipole after the Sudowoodo roadblock clears.
- Collect nearby Wela Volcano Park items if useful.
- Identify the dance changes and defeat Totem Alolan Marowak with Salazzle.
- Receive the Firium Z, Quick Balls and Charizard Glide.
Finish Mallow's Lush Jungle trial
From Wela Volcano Park, continue through Route 7 and Route 8. Speak with Professor Colress on Route 8, then enter Lush Jungle and talk to Mallow. The Ultra Moon trial requires exactly three ingredients: a Mago Berry, Honey and a Big Root. Mallow and Stoutland lead you to the search areas in sequence. Inspect the marked locations carefully; incorrect choices can trigger battles with Pokémon such as Fomantis, Comfey or Sudowoodo.
Return the ingredients to Mallow and begin the cooking scene. Totem Lurantis is level 24, Grass-type, holds a Power Herb and uses Low Sweep, X-Scissor, Solar Blade and Synthesis. It can call level 22 Kecleon and Comfey during the battle. The allies can provide Sunny Day support, allowing Solar Blade to attack immediately and making Synthesis more effective. Fire, Flying, Ice, Poison and Bug attacks are good choices. A Fire-type is useful, but keep a second attacker ready and heal before starting the cooking sequence.
If you lose, the ingredient search must be repeated. After victory, Mallow gives the Grassium Z and 10 Nest Balls, while Professor Kukui gives TM67 Smart Strike. TM43 Flame Charge is found on the Route 8 route and is optional. Trial battles do not permit normal capture attempts, so wait until the trial is complete before spending time on wild encounters.
- Collect the Mago Berry, Honey and Big Root.
- Defeat Totem Lurantis and its called Kecleon or Comfey allies.
- Receive the Grassium Z, Nest Balls and TM67 Smart Strike.
- Remember that losing resets Mallow's ingredient sequence.
Return to Heahea City and clear the route to Olivia
After Mallow's trial, follow the story back toward Heahea City. Enter the Dimensional Research Lab and complete the required conversations with Professor Burnet and Lillie. Continue through Diglett's Tunnel, where the Aether Foundation explains that Team Skull has been disturbing the Pokémon. Defeat the required Team Skull obstruction and exit onto Route 9.
Enter Konikoni City, heal and resupply. The city provides useful shops and optional rewards, but Olivia's Grand Trial is not fought inside the city. Continue south through Memorial Hill. At the cemetery, an Aether Foundation chief argues with Team Skull over a Slowpoke. Defeat the Team Skull Grunt on his behalf, then proceed east through the Akala Outskirts.
Follow the path to the Ruins of Life and save before speaking to Olivia. Olivia uses Anorith level 27, Lileep level 27 and Lycanroc level 28. Water and Grass attacks are strong against the Rock-type team, while Fighting, Ground and Steel attacks also provide good coverage. Lileep can use Grass and Water coverage, so do not leave a weakened Water-type in front of it. Keep a healthy fast attacker available for Lycanroc and heal rather than gambling on a low-health sweep.
Victory awards the Rockium Z and the Akala Trial Completion stamp, raising the obedience limit for traded Pokémon to level 50. Olivia then directs you toward the next Aether Foundation event.
- Complete the Dimensional Research Lab conversations.
- Clear Diglett's Tunnel and reach Route 9.
- Pass through Konikoni City, Memorial Hill and the Akala Outskirts.
- Defeat Olivia's Anorith, Lileep and Lycanroc.
- Receive the Rockium Z and Akala Trial Completion stamp.
Visit Hano Grand Resort and begin the first Aether Paradise sequence
After Olivia's Grand Trial, return to Heahea City and take the eastern route toward Hano Grand Resort. You may explore Hano Beach and the hotel lobby first for optional items, trainers and the Pyukumuku side activity, but the required objective is inside the hotel. Go upstairs and speak with Faba, the Aether Foundation chief you helped at Memorial Hill. Accept his invitation to tour Aether Paradise. Before departure, Professor Kukui tells you to meet him later in Malie Garden.
The ferry takes you to the B1F Docks of Aether Paradise. Faba begins the tour and explains that the facility houses injured Pokémon and uses a signal that prevents Poké Balls from functioning inside the resort. Wicke then takes over the tour and leads you by elevator to the entrance level. Follow her through the conservation area to the northwest clearing, where President Lusamine is waiting.
After Lusamine's introduction, an Ultra Wormhole opens and a jellyfish-like Ultra Beast appears. Approach it to begin the mandatory level 27 encounter. In battle it appears under the unidentified name ???, has a Defense boost and uses Clear Smog, Psywave, Headbutt and Venoshock. The encounter is the story's first Nihilego battle, but it cannot be captured because the Aether Paradise signal blocks Poké Balls. Defeat it with strong Ground, Psychic or other appropriate damage, while avoiding a weakened Poison- or Psychic-vulnerable lead. The creature disappears after the battle.
- Return to Heahea City after Olivia and reach Hano Grand Resort.
- Speak with Faba and accept the Aether Paradise tour.
- Follow Wicke through the docks, elevator and conservation area.
- Defeat the level 27 uncatchable Nihilego encounter.
Finish the first Aether Paradise visit and hand off to Ula'ula
After the Nihilego battle, Lusamine identifies the creature as an Ultra Beast. In Ultra Moon, the masked visitors reveal themselves as Phyco and Soliera of the Ultra Recon Squad. They explain that their home dimension has been damaged by Necrozma, establishing the plot thread that later leads to Ultra Megalopolis. This is a story conversation, not the later Aether Paradise infiltration, so do not expect Faba's battles, Guzma or Lusamine's boss fight here.
Wicke escorts you back to the B1F Docks. Speak with her there to receive TM29 Psychic. Board the ferry after the scene finishes. The game then transports you to Malie City on Ula'ula Island. Heal at the Pokémon Center after arrival and save before beginning the next chapter's events.
Do not count this first visit as the Aether Paradise rescue sequence covered later in the story. The first visit ends immediately after the Nihilego encounter, the Ultra Recon Squad introduction, TM29 Psychic and the ferry departure. Ula'ula trials, Malie Garden, Team Skull's later activity and Nanu's Grand Trial belong to ch04.
- Hear Lusamine's explanation and meet Phyco and Soliera.
- Receive TM29 Psychic from Wicke at the B1F Docks.
- Ride the ferry from Aether Paradise to Malie City.
- Save and heal in Malie City before beginning the Ula'ula chapter.
Before you move on
- Waterium Z, Firium Z, Grassium Z and Rockium Z are in the Bag.
- Lana's Brooklet Hill, Kiawe's Wela Volcano Park and Mallow's Lush Jungle trials are complete.
- Totem Araquanid, Totem Alolan Marowak and Totem Lurantis have been defeated.
- Olivia's Anorith, Lileep and Lycanroc have been defeated.
- The Akala Trial Completion stamp appears in the Trainer Passport.
- The first Aether Paradise visit is complete.
- The level 27 Nihilego encounter has been defeated and cannot be captured during this event.
- Phyco and Soliera have been introduced.
- TM29 Psychic is in the Bag.

Ula'ula Island: Heavy Battles and the Aether Fluctuation
You have just arrived in Malie City after completing the first Aether Paradise visit in Pokémon Ultra Moon. Complete Hau’s battle, the Malie Garden Guzma sequence, Sophocles’s Electric trial, Acerola’s Ghost trial, the Po Town rescue and Shady House, Gladion’s battle, and Nanu’s Grand Trial. Finish at the Malie City ferry terminal immediately before boarding for the second Aether Paradise infiltration in ch05.
Arrive in Malie City and trigger the Ula'ula route
After the first Aether Paradise visit and the arrival cutscene in Malie City, heal at the Pokémon Center and speak with Hau outside. He challenges you to a battle. His team depends on your starter, but it includes Alolan Raichu, Eevee, Noibat and Tauros around the high 20s, with his starter Pokémon at level 30. Bring an answer for Flying types and use Fighting or another strong neutral attack against Eevee and Tauros.
After defeating Hau, receive Lycanium Z if your game gives you the compatible reward for your starter choice. Go to Malie Garden and enter the tea house at the north end. Speak with Professor Kukui, then follow the story back through Malie City and the library. Speak with Lillie and continue through the library sequence until the route to Mount Hokulani opens.
Before leaving, heal again if the Hau battle used significant PP. Route 10 contains Team Skull members and regular trainers, and the bus at the route’s end carries you to Mount Hokulani. Optional exploration can wait; the next required objective is Sophocles’s trial.
- Heal before Hau’s battle.
- Defeat Hau outside the Malie City Pokémon Center.
- Complete the Malie Garden and library scenes.
- Take Route 10 and the bus toward Mount Hokulani.
Complete Sophocles’s trial at Hokulani Observatory
At Mount Hokulani, speak with Kukui and Molayne before entering the observatory. You can collect the Steelium Z from Molayne and use the nearby Pokémon Center to restore HP and PP. Buy Super Potions, Revives and status cures, then save before beginning the trial.
Ultra Moon uses the Charjabug power puzzle. Interact with the switches and machinery so the Charjabug are pushed into the correct positions and power each machine. The trial includes mandatory battles with Elekid and Electabuzz before the Totem encounter. Follow the machine’s movement after each switch press instead of repeatedly pressing switches at random; if the arrangement is wrong, continue interacting with the available switches until the Charjabug line up.
There is no dependable healing break between the last puzzle battle and Totem Togedemaru. Enter with your intended lead healthy and with enough PP for Ground, Fire or Fighting attacks. After the Totem battle and Sophocles’s dialogue, receive Electrium Z.
- Use the Mount Hokulani Pokémon Center before the trial.
- Save before starting the Charjabug puzzle.
- Defeat the required Elekid and Electabuzz encounters.
- Receive Electrium Z after clearing the trial.
Defeat Totem Togedemaru
Totem Togedemaru is Electric and Steel type and receives a defensive aura boost. Ground attacks are the strongest general answer because they hit its Electric typing super effectively. Fire and Fighting attacks also exploit its Steel typing. A Ground-type Pokémon that is not vulnerable to Electric attacks is especially useful.
The Totem can call Skarmory and Dedenne as allies. Skarmory can use disruptive support moves and is resistant to many ordinary attacks, while Dedenne can add Electric pressure and interfere with setup. If an ally creates an immediate threat to your active Pokémon, remove that ally first; otherwise keep damaging Togedemaru so the battle does not become a prolonged three-on-one fight.
Watch for Spiky Shield and avoid wasting a contact attack into it. After winning, collect Electrium Z if the reward dialogue has not already granted it, then finish the observatory scenes and return through Malie City.
- Use Ground, Fire or Fighting damage.
- Plan for Skarmory and Dedenne to join the battle.
- Avoid contact attacks into Spiky Shield.
- Confirm that Electrium Z is in the Bag.
Cross Ula'ula to Acerola’s trial
Return to Malie City and follow the story toward Route 11 and Route 12. On Route 12, use Mudsdale Ride to cross the rough ground and continue through Blush Mountain and Ula’ula Beach. The routes contain optional trainers and useful experience, so bring the main party toward the low-to-mid 30s before Acerola’s trial.
Continue through Route 13 and Tapu Village. At the Pokémon Center near Tapu Village, heal and restock before entering Route 14 and the Abandoned Thrifty Megamart. Bring Dark, Ghost or Steel attacks. Normal- and Fighting-type moves cannot damage Ghost Pokémon, so a team relying on those types will lose turns during the trial.
Acerola’s trial uses the Poké Finder. The Pokémon appearing during the active trial are scripted encounters and should not be treated as ordinary wild battles. Capture is not available during the forced trial fights. Follow the disturbances through the building until the final photograph prompt appears.
- Use Mudsdale Ride on Route 12.
- Heal at the Tapu Village Pokémon Center.
- Bring Dark, Ghost or Steel attacks.
- Do not waste Poké Balls during scripted trial encounters.
Clear Acerola’s trial and defeat Totem Mimikyu
Save before taking the final Poké Finder photograph and make sure the entire party is restored. Totem Mimikyu is level 35 and begins with Disguise, which absorbs the first damaging attack. Use a low-risk move to remove Disguise, then commit your stronger attack or Z-Move on the next turn.
Mimikyu is Ghost and Fairy type. Steel attacks are particularly useful, while Ghost and Dark attacks also deal super-effective damage. The Totem can call Banette and Jellicent. Remove an ally first if it threatens your counter with status, Water or Ghost damage; otherwise focus on Mimikyu and prevent the battle from becoming a drawn-out multi-target fight.
After defeating Totem Mimikyu, receive Ghostium Z and Dusk Balls. The trial area becomes available for normal exploration afterward, so you can return later if you want to catch Pokémon there.
- Save before the final photograph.
- Break Disguise before using your strongest attack.
- Prepare for Banette and Jellicent.
- Receive Ghostium Z and Dusk Balls.
Start the Po Town rescue sequence
Return to Aether House near Route 15 after Acerola’s trial. The stolen Yungoos scene triggers, followed by Plumeria’s battle. Heal at a Pokémon Center before starting if necessary. Plumeria uses Golbat and Salazzle; Electric or Ice attacks help against Golbat, while Water, Ground or Psychic attacks are useful against Salazzle.
After the battle and the following Aether House scene, go to the western beach and speak with Grimsley. He registers Sharpedo as a Ride Pokémon. Use Sharpedo to cross the water and break the rocks blocking the route through Route 15. Continue through Route 16, Ula’ula Meadow and Route 17 until you reach Po Town.
Enter Team Skull’s base and proceed through Shady House. Inspect the notes and defeat the Team Skull members blocking the rooms. The password answers are Beat Up, Golisopod and Tapu Cocoa. When the final confirmation prompt asks whether you are sure, choose No. This opens the way to Guzma’s room.
- Heal before Plumeria’s battle.
- Register Sharpedo with Grimsley.
- Travel through Routes 15 and 16, Ula’ula Meadow and Route 17.
- Use Beat Up, Golisopod, Tapu Cocoa and No in Shady House.
Defeat Guzma and return to Aether House
Battle Guzma at the top of Shady House. His Bug-focused team is vulnerable to Fire, Flying and Rock attacks, but avoid relying on a single attacker because First Impression, Liquidation and coverage moves can punish an unsafe lead. Bug-resistant Pokémon provide useful switch-in opportunities.
After Guzma is defeated, leave Po Town and return to Aether House when the story directs you. The following sequence involves the stolen Pokémon and the next rescue attempt. Use the Pokémon Center on Route 15 or another available healing point before confronting Gladion; the game’s story battles do not replace normal preparation.
The chapter is not complete after Guzma. The remaining required order is Gladion’s battle, the ferry-terminal scene and Nanu’s Grand Trial.
- Clear every required Shady House room.
- Defeat Guzma with Fire, Flying or Rock coverage.
- Return to Aether House after the Po Town scenes.
- Restore the party before Gladion’s battle.
Defeat Gladion, then complete Nanu’s Grand Trial
At Aether House, Gladion challenges you. His Ultra Moon team includes Golbat, Zoroark and Type: Null around levels 42 and 43. Fighting attacks are useful against Zoroark and Type: Null, but Golbat is immune to Ground and resists Fighting, so keep an Electric, Ice, Rock or Psychic answer ready for it. Zoroark may use Illusion, so check the opponent’s displayed behavior and level before assuming which Pokémon is active.
After Gladion’s battle, follow him toward the Malie City ferry terminal. Do not begin Nanu’s battle at Aether House. Nanu challenges you at the ferry-terminal departure sequence after Gladion asks you to accompany him. Save and heal before speaking to Nanu.
Nanu’s Ultra Moon team is Sableye at level 43, Krokorok at level 43 and Alolan Persian at level 44. Sableye is weak to Fairy attacks in this generation; it also takes neutral damage from most strong attacks, so Fairy is the cleanest answer. Krokorok is weak to Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Bug and Fairy, while Alolan Persian is best handled with a sturdy Fairy or Fighting answer, remembering that its Fur Coat ability reduces physical damage. After victory, receive Darkinium Z and the Ula’ula trial stamp.
- Defeat Gladion at Aether House.
- Heal and save before speaking to Nanu at the ferry terminal.
- Use Fairy coverage against Sableye and Alolan Persian where practical.
- Defeat Nanu and receive Darkinium Z.
Stop before the second Aether Paradise infiltration
After Nanu’s Grand Trial, complete the remaining ferry-terminal dialogue. Hau and Gladion are waiting for the departure to Aether Paradise. This is the second Aether Paradise visit in the game, following the first visit that brought you to Ula’ula Island. The rescue operation, Secret Lab B, Faba, Guzma, Soliera, Lusamine, the Master Ball and the Sun Flute belong to ch05.
Before boarding, restore the party, replenish healing items and status cures, check move PP and save. If you are defeated on the way to the terminal, return from the nearest Pokémon Center; the completed trials, Po Town sequence and Nanu battle remain complete. Do not describe this chapter as beginning before Aether Paradise or as ending after the upcoming infiltration.
Board only when ready to continue into ch05. The next chapter begins with the second Aether Paradise infiltration from Malie City and ends with the departure for Seafolk Village on Poni Island.
- Sophocles’s trial and Electrium Z are complete.
- Acerola’s trial, Totem Mimikyu, Ghostium Z and Dusk Balls are complete.
- Po Town, Shady House, Guzma and Gladion are complete.
- Nanu’s Grand Trial, Darkinium Z and the Ula’ula stamp are complete.
- The party is healed at Malie City’s ferry terminal before the second Aether Paradise visit.
Before you move on
- The player has arrived on Ula’ula after the completed first Aether Paradise visit.
- Hau has been defeated in Malie City and the Malie Garden and library scenes are complete.
- Sophocles’s trial is cleared, Totem Togedemaru is defeated and Electrium Z has been obtained.
- Acerola’s trial is cleared, Totem Mimikyu is defeated and Ghostium Z and Dusk Balls have been received.
- Team Skull’s Shady House is cleared using Beat Up, Golisopod, Tapu Cocoa and No.
- Guzma has been defeated in Po Town and Gladion has been defeated at Aether House.
- Nanu’s Grand Trial has been completed at the ferry-terminal sequence, with Darkinium Z and the Ula’ula trial stamp recorded.
- The party is healed and the player is at Malie City’s ferry terminal, ready to board for the second Aether Paradise visit in ch05.

Aether Paradise and the Ultra Recon Squad—First Ultra Encounters
After completing Nanu’s Grand Trial, travel from the Malie City Ferry Terminal to Aether Paradise with Hau and Gladion. This is the second Aether Paradise visit, not the earlier guided tour from Hano Grand Resort. The required sequence covers the B1F docks, Faba’s first battle, Secret Lab B, the facility’s healing points, the second Faba battle, Guzma, Ultra Recon Squad member Soliera, and Lusamine. After the story rewards, receive the Master Ball and Sun Flute, then return to the docks and sail to Seafolk Village on Poni Island.
Prepare in Malie City and board the ferry
Begin this chapter after Nanu’s Grand Trial and the Po Town, Shady House, and Aether House events. Heal at the Malie City Pokémon Center, buy healing items and status cures, and adjust your party before going to the Malie City Ferry Terminal. The upcoming battles range from the low 40s to level 47, so a balanced team around levels 40 to 47 is appropriate. Ground, Fire, Flying, Electric, Psychic, Fighting, and Grass attacks provide useful coverage, but do not rely on one sweeper because several battles are doubles and opposing teams use status moves and mixed coverage.
At the ferry terminal, speak with Gladion and agree to travel to Aether Paradise. You arrive at the B1F docks. The Aether Foundation employee near the boat can return you to Malie City, so use this option if you need supplies, a different team, or a safer save point. When ready, go north through the crates and begin clearing the Aether Foundation employees. Some battles can be avoided, but fighting them gives useful experience before the facility’s mandatory battles.
- Complete Nanu’s Grand Trial.
- Heal and resupply in Malie City.
- Save before speaking with Gladion if you want a recovery point before the infiltration.
- Board the ferry from the Malie City Ferry Terminal.
Clear the B1F docks and defeat Faba
Work north through the crates. The dock employees use Pokémon around levels 40 and 41, including Alolan Dugtrio, Toucannon, Kecleon, Stoutland, Arbok, Lurantis, Parasect, Sudowoodo, Drifblim, Primeape, and Arcanine. Fighting, Water, Ice, Rock, Ground, Flying, and Psychic attacks cover much of this group. Pick up the Rare Candy near the rear of the dock area and TM06 Toxic in the southwest portion if you want the optional items before moving on.
Return to the elevator and approach its control panel. This triggers Aether Branch Chief Faba’s first battle, against one level 43 Hypno. Dark- and Bug-type attacks are effective, but Hypno can use Hypnosis, so keep an awakening item available or lead with a Pokémon that can handle sleep. After the battle, Gladion asks whether you are ready to continue downstairs. Choose no if you need healing, then speak with the Aether employee behind the counter on 1F to restore the entire party for free. Speak with Gladion again and choose yes when ready.
- Defeat the dock employees or bypass optional fights as needed.
- Collect the Rare Candy and TM06 Toxic if desired.
- Defeat Faba’s level 43 Hypno.
- Use the free 1F healer before entering Secret Lab B.
Search Secret Lab B and use Wicke’s healing point
Take the elevator down and enter Secret Lab B. Hau gives you a Max Revive. Move east through the laboratory and defeat three employees in succession. Their Pokémon are Alolan Muk, Magneton, and Porygon2, each at level 41. Ground attacks are useful against Magneton, while Fighting attacks are effective against Porygon2. Use caution with Ground attackers against Alolan Muk if they are vulnerable to Poison or Dark moves.
Continue east into the laboratory room for a double battle against Huntail and Gorebyss, both level 41. Hau fights beside you with a level 42 Raichu, making Electric attacks especially useful. Grass attacks also work well. After the battle, inspect the computer if you want the story information, then leave the room and return to the elevator.
When you return to 1F, Hau and Gladion accompany you into another double battle against Lileep and Anorith, both level 41. Hau again uses Raichu. After this battle, Wicke automatically restores your party. Treat this as the main recovery point for the rest of the infiltration. A PC is available nearby, so change your lead Pokémon or party lineup before continuing.
- Take the Max Revive from Hau.
- Defeat the three level 41 Secret Lab B employees.
- Use Electric or Grass attacks against Huntail and Gorebyss.
- Confirm that Wicke has fully healed the party after the Lileep and Anorith battle.
Defeat the Aether defenders and the second Faba team
Follow Gladion north from the healing point. You and Gladion enter a double battle against employees using Electabuzz, Magmar, Manectric, and Houndoom, all around level 42. Ground attacks help against the Electric Pokémon, while Water, Ground, Rock, or Fighting attacks are useful against Houndoom. Gladion contributes Type: Null, Zoroark, and Golbat.
The next mandatory fight is a double battle with Hau against Faba and an employee. The employee uses Ledian and Pupitar at level 42. Faba uses Claydol at level 44, Hypno at level 45, and Bruxish at level 44. Fire or Rock attacks handle Ledian, Grass or Water attacks help against Claydol and Pupitar, and Electric or Grass attacks are useful against Bruxish. The game restores your party before this battle, but keep the free-healing locations in mind if you need to reorganize afterward.
After the battle, follow the exterior path. Pick up the optional Full Heals, then approach the Team Skull Grunts. The two mandatory Grunts use level 42 Golbat and level 42 Alolan Raticate. Rock, Electric, Ice, Fighting, or Psychic attacks can handle them. The next Grunt does not battle. Continue north to meet Guzma.
- Prepare for consecutive double battles.
- Defeat the Gladion-assisted employees.
- Defeat Faba and his partner in the second battle.
- Use the Full Heals if needed before Guzma.
Defeat Guzma, Soliera, and Lusamine
Guzma uses four level 45 Pokémon: Golisopod, Pinsir, Masquerain, and Vikavolt. Fire and Flying attacks are strong general choices against the Bug-heavy team. Rock attacks are particularly useful against Masquerain, while Ground attacks help against Vikavolt if they can safely act. Be prepared for Golisopod’s First Impression and Emergency Exit, and avoid leaving a frail Pokémon in front of Vikavolt’s special attacks.
After Guzma, enter the mansion and battle Ultra Recon Squad member Soliera in Ultra Moon. She uses one level 47 Poipole. Ground and Psychic attacks are super effective. This is a trainer battle, not a wild encounter, so Poké Balls cannot be used.
Continue through the mansion and follow the teleporter and story scenes. Your party is healed immediately before Lusamine’s battle. Lusamine uses level 47 Clefable, Lilligant, Lopunny, Milotic, and Bewear. Steel or Poison attacks are effective against Clefable; Fire, Ice, or Flying attacks help against Lilligant; Fighting attacks cover Lopunny and Bewear; and Electric or Grass attacks are useful against Milotic. Bewear has Fighting-type attacks and Lopunny carries elemental punches, so do not leave a fragile counter exposed.
- Defeat Guzma’s four level 45 Pokémon.
- Defeat Soliera’s level 47 Poipole.
- Save before the final approach if you want a convenient retry point.
- Use the automatic healing before Lusamine’s battle.
- Defeat Lusamine’s full level 47 team.
Receive the story rewards and depart for Poni Island
After Lusamine’s defeat, complete the following cutscenes. Lusamine and Guzma disappear through the Ultra Wormhole, and the Ultra Recon Squad explains the next stage of the story. Do not expect to capture Poipole, Guzma’s Pokémon, Faba’s Pokémon, or Lusamine’s Pokémon; these are all scripted trainer battles.
Outside the mansion, speak with Lillie and Gladion. Gladion gives you the Master Ball. In Pokémon Ultra Moon, the flute obtained during this sequence is the Sun Flute. The Moon Flute is obtained later during the Poni Island story, so do not confuse the two rewards.
Before departing, return through the main building. Speak with the employee near the entrance to receive a Stick. Optional items in the exterior area include a Heal Ball and a Hyper Potion. When ready, take the elevator down to B1F, walk southwest across the docks, and speak with Gladion. Agree to leave. The ferry then carries you to Seafolk Village on Poni Island, which is the required handoff for the next chapter.
- Complete the post-Lusamine cutscenes.
- Receive the Master Ball from Gladion.
- Receive the Sun Flute in Ultra Moon.
- Collect the optional Stick, Heal Ball, and Hyper Potion if desired.
- Speak with Gladion at the B1F docks.
- Arrive in Seafolk Village on Poni Island.
Before you move on
- Nanu’s Grand Trial is complete.
- The player has departed from the Malie City Ferry Terminal and reached Aether Paradise.
- Faba has been defeated in his level 43 Hypno battle and his later double battle.
- Secret Lab B has been entered and its mandatory employee battles are complete.
- The Huntail and Gorebyss double battle and the Lileep and Anorith double battle are complete.
- Guzma and Ultra Moon’s Ultra Recon Squad member Soliera have been defeated.
- Lusamine has been defeated.
- Gladion has given the player the Master Ball.
- The player has received Ultra Moon’s Sun Flute.
- The player has spoken with Gladion at the B1F docks and arrived in Seafolk Village on Poni Island.
Poni Island and The Altar Events
Ultra Moon’s Poni sequence begins with Hapu’s appointment as Kahuna, continues through Exeggutor Island and the Dragon Trial in Vast Poni Canyon, and then leads directly into the Necrozma climax. The required order is Moon Flute, Totem Kommo-o, the Altar of the Moone ceremony, level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma, a Solgaleo-assisted white-wormhole ride, Ultra Megalopolis, and level 60 Ultra Necrozma. Mina’s Trial and Hapu’s Grand Trial come afterward.
Begin in Seafolk Village and witness Hapu’s appointment
After the Aether Paradise events, restore your party at the Seafolk Village Pokémon Center and stock up on Super Potions, Revives, status cures, and Poké Balls. Seafolk Village remains the nearest reliable resupply point while you explore Poni’s early story routes.
Follow Ancient Poni Path to Hapu’s house, then continue to the Ruins of Hope. Use Machamp Shove to move the boulders and reach the inner chamber. The ceremony there establishes Hapu as Poni’s Kahuna, but it does not begin her Grand Trial. In Ultra Moon, Hapu’s Grand Trial is postponed until after the Necrozma crisis and Mina’s Trial.
Return to Seafolk Village and speak with the Seafolk chief when the story directs you to arrange transport to Exeggutor Island. Do not try to start Mina’s Trial yet; Mina’s challenge is not available until the Ultra Megalopolis events are finished.
- Heal and restock in Seafolk Village.
- Visit Hapu’s house and the Ruins of Hope.
- Complete Hapu’s Kahuna appointment scene.
- Confirm that Hapu’s Grand Trial is not yet available.
Travel to Exeggutor Island and obtain the Moon Flute
Board the boat from Seafolk Village and enter Exeggutor Island. Move west and interact with the Exeggutor trees to trigger the Pinsir encounters blocking the route. Defeat or run from each Pinsir, then continue north until the final Exeggutor moves into position.
Follow the Exeggutor’s route, break the large rocks with Tauros Charge, and collect the Totem Sticker beneath the rock if you want the optional reward. Continue to the upper section and take the Moon Flute. Ultra Moon uses the Moon Flute; the Sun Flute belongs to the corresponding Ultra Sun sequence.
After taking the flute, the island sequence returns you to Seafolk Village. The flute is a required story item for the Altar of the Moone ceremony, so do not leave Poni expecting to obtain it elsewhere.
- Clear the Pinsir encounters on Exeggutor Island.
- Use Tauros Charge to clear the rock barriers.
- Collect the optional Totem Sticker if desired.
- Obtain the Moon Flute.
Enter Vast Poni Canyon and complete the Dragon Trial
From Seafolk Village, return toward Hapu’s house and take the northern route to Vast Poni Canyon. Team Skull blocks the approach. Defeat the first grunt, then the second grunt’s larger team. Plumeria appears afterward, gives you Poisonium Z, and Lillie restores your party before you enter the canyon.
Inside Vast Poni Canyon, use Machamp Shove and the canyon’s ledges to progress through the trial route. Lillie can heal your Pokémon during this section, so use that recovery point rather than spending all your healing items. Battle optional trainers for experience, and check side paths for items and Totem Stickers before continuing toward the Dragonium Z pedestal.
Save before interacting with the pedestal. Totem Kommo-o appears at level 49 with boosted stats. In Ultra Moon, its SOS ally is Noivern at level 48. Kommo-o is Dragon/Fighting, while Noivern is Dragon/Flying. Fairy attacks pressure both targets, although Noivern’s speed and Kommo-o’s boosted defenses can prevent an immediate knockout. Ice attacks are also useful against Noivern. Use a Z-Move when it secures a knockout or prevents an extra SOS turn.
After winning, collect Dragonium Z. Do not expect Groundium Z here: Hapu awards Groundium Z later during her Grand Trial on Exeggutor Island.
- Defeat both Team Skull grunts at the canyon entrance.
- Receive Poisonium Z from Plumeria.
- Use Lillie’s healing support inside the canyon.
- Defeat level 49 Totem Kommo-o and level 48 Noivern.
- Collect Dragonium Z.
Perform the Altar of the Moone ceremony
Continue north through Vast Poni Canyon after the Dragon Trial. The route leads to the Altar of the Moone. The ceremony does not require you to have already caught Lunala or to place a Lunala in your party. Nebby is still the story Cosmoem at this point.
Save before approaching the altar if you want a convenient retry point for the upcoming forced battle. Stand with Lillie at the altar and use the Moon Flute when prompted. The ceremony evolves Nebby into Lunala. An Ultra Wormhole then opens, Lusamine and Guzma emerge, and Necrozma attacks Lunala before absorbing it.
Necrozma becomes Dawn Wings Necrozma, the Ultra Moon-specific fusion of Necrozma and Lunala. This encounter is a mandatory story battle. It is not the later level 65 Necrozma encounter at Mount Lanakila, and it does not provide a capture prompt.
- Reach the Altar of the Moone.
- Save before beginning the flute scene.
- Use the Moon Flute with Lillie.
- Watch Nebby evolve into Lunala.
- Confirm that Necrozma absorbs Lunala and becomes Dawn Wings Necrozma.
Defeat level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma
Dawn Wings Necrozma is level 50 and has Psychic/Ghost typing. It uses powerful special attacks, including Moongeist Beam, and can punish a team that relies on one fragile attacker. Dark- and Ghost-type attacks are super effective, but avoid switching a frail Dark or Ghost Pokémon into an attack without checking its ability to survive the hit.
A sturdy Dark-type or a physical attacker with a strong super-effective move is useful. Fairy Pokémon can help against some of the encounter’s coverage but should not be treated as a universal answer. Use healing items during the battle when necessary, and preserve a healthy counter instead of repeatedly sacrificing weakened Pokémon.
Dawn Wings Necrozma cannot be caught. After it is defeated, the story sends it back through Ultra Space. The game then advances directly to the Ultra Recon Squad’s travel sequence rather than opening Mina’s Trial or Hapu’s Grand Trial.
- Defeat level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma.
- Use Dark- or Ghost-type damage when safe.
- Do not waste Poké Balls or Beast Balls on this forced encounter.
- Confirm that Necrozma retreats instead of being captured.
Ride Solgaleo through the white wormhole
After the battle, speak with the Ultra Recon Squad. In Ultra Moon, they lend you their Solgaleo for Ultra Warp Ride. This is not your own Lunala and does not require you to catch or add Solgaleo to your party.
Enter the Ultra Wormhole and guide Solgaleo through the moving rings. For this first story trip, choose a white wormhole. White wormholes lead to Ultra Megalopolis during the initial Necrozma sequence; colored wormholes can divert you to other Ultra Space areas instead of advancing the story. If you miss the required destination, follow the available return option and try the ride again.
The ride uses the Nintendo 3DS motion controls initially. Keep the system level, steer toward the rings, and use the control reset when the aim drifts. After the story is complete, an Aether Foundation employee in Heahea City can provide an alternative Circle Pad control option.
- Speak with the Ultra Recon Squad after Dawn Wings Necrozma flees.
- Borrow the squad’s Solgaleo.
- Enter a white wormhole during the first story ride.
- Reach Ultra Megalopolis.
Climb Megalo Tower and defeat Ultra Necrozma
In Ultra Megalopolis, speak with the Ultra Recon Squad and proceed toward Megalo Tower. The route is linear. Heal before climbing and save before approaching the summit. The squad can return you to Alola if you need to train or restock, and you can return to Ultra Megalopolis afterward.
At the top of Megalo Tower, Necrozma absorbs additional light and changes into Ultra Necrozma. The opponent is level 60 and Psychic/Dragon with sharply raised battle stats. It cannot be captured. Expect it to knock out underleveled Pokémon quickly, especially if they are weak to its coverage.
Bring at least one Pokémon that can survive a hit, a strong Fairy-, Dragon-, Ice-, Bug-, Ghost-, or Dark-type attack as appropriate for your team, and enough Revives and healing items for an emergency strategy. A Focus Sash or Sturdy user can create a damage window, while priority attacks can finish Ultra Necrozma after it has been weakened. Do not depend on status alone; the immediate priority is surviving long enough to deal decisive damage.
If you lose, return to Alola, heal, raise the levels of your best counters, and try the white-wormhole route again. After defeating Ultra Necrozma, the story frees Nebby and returns you to the Altar area. You receive access to later Ultra Warp Ride use, and the Ultra Recon Squad gives you a level 40 Poipole if you accept it.
- Reach the top of Megalo Tower.
- Defeat level 60 Ultra Necrozma.
- Confirm that Ultra Necrozma cannot be captured.
- Accept or decline the level 40 Poipole gift.
- Return to the Altar area after the climax.
Hand off to Mina’s Trial and later Poni objectives
After the Ultra Megalopolis sequence, speak with the nearby story characters and follow the prompt to return to Seafolk Village. Mina’s Trial is now available. It begins in Seafolk Village and requires collecting petals from the other trial captains before returning to Mina for the Fairium Z reward.
Hapu’s Grand Trial comes after Mina’s Trial. It takes place on Exeggutor Island and awards Groundium Z. It is not the early Vast Poni Canyon encounter, and it is not required for the Altar ceremony or the Ultra Necrozma battles.
The separate Reverse World interaction is a later, post-Champion feature. After becoming Champion, return to the Altar of the Moone with Lunala in your party during the required daytime period shown by the game clock, then use the altar’s dimensional-distortion interaction to reach the alternate Alola. The normal Ultra Warp Ride portal and the Reverse World transition are separate destinations; completing the pre-League sequence here does not itself unlock every post-game legendary encounter.
- Ultra Necrozma has been defeated.
- The story has returned you to Alola.
- Mina’s Trial is available in Seafolk Village.
- Fairium Z and Hapu’s Grand Trial remain later objectives.
- The post-Champion Reverse World interaction is understood as a separate feature.
Before you move on
- Hapu’s appointment as Poni’s Kahuna has been witnessed.
- The Moon Flute has been obtained on Exeggutor Island.
- Team Skull has been cleared from the Vast Poni Canyon entrance and Poisonium Z has been received from Plumeria.
- Level 49 Totem Kommo-o and level 48 Noivern have been defeated.
- Dragonium Z has been collected.
- Nebby has evolved into Lunala at the Altar of the Moone.
- Level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma has been defeated and has fled.
- The Ultra Recon Squad’s Solgaleo has been used to enter a white wormhole.
- Ultra Megalopolis and Megalo Tower have been reached.
- Level 60 Ultra Necrozma has been defeated.
- The story has returned to Alola and Mina’s Trial is now available.
- Hapu’s Grand Trial and the post-Champion Reverse World interaction remain correctly placed later in the game.

Poni’s Remaining Trials and the Correct Route to Mount Lanakila
In Pokémon Ultra Moon for Nintendo 3DS, this section begins only after you have completed the Ultra Megalopolis sequence and defeated Ultra Necrozma. Return to Seafolk Village for Mina’s Trial, finish the Ultra Moon-specific petal battles, defeat Totem Ribombee, then complete Hapu’s Grand Trial on Exeggutor Island. Only after receiving Fairium Z and Groundium Z should you climb Mount Lanakila, catch or postpone the level 65 Necrozma encounter, and enter the Pokémon League.
1. Begin Mina’s Trial in Seafolk Village
After the Ultra Megalopolis story is complete and Ultra Necrozma has been defeated, return to Seafolk Village on Poni Island. Heal at the Pokémon Center, then enter Mina’s Whiscash-shaped house on the east side of town and speak with Mina. The trial begins with a battle against Mina, whose Mawile, Granbull, and Ribombee are all level 51. Defeat her to receive the Pink Petal.
Mina then asks you to collect the remaining petals from the other trial captains. The required route in Ultra Moon is Hau’oli Cemetery for Ilima, Lush Jungle for Lana, Wela Volcano Park for Kiawe, Hokulani Observatory for Sophocles, and Aether House on Route 15 for the final battle against Nanu. The order is fixed, and the captain battles do not automatically restore your party, so heal before accepting each fight.
At Hau’oli Cemetery, speak with Ilima near the graves and defeat his level 51 Gumshoos, Smeargle, and Komala. Continue to Lush Jungle and follow the story prompt to Lana. Her level 51 Lanturn, Cloyster, and Araquanid can inflict paralysis, entry-hazard damage, and heavy Water-type damage. At Wela Volcano Park, use the trial guide near the entrance if you need a free healing stop, then defeat Kiawe’s level 51 Arcanine, Talonflame, and Alolan Marowak. Hiker David’s level 48 Magmar battle follows immediately.
Travel to Hokulani Observatory and use the rear hallway to reach Sophocles. His level 51 Togedemaru, Magnezone, and Alolan Golem are vulnerable to Ground- and Fighting-type attacks, although Togedemaru’s Steel typing and defensive moves can waste turns. Finally, go to Aether House on Route 15. In Ultra Moon, Nanu battles you instead of simply handing over the Purple Petal; his Sableye and Absol are level 52, and his Persian is level 53 and can use a Dark-type Z-Move.
- The Ultra Megalopolis sequence is complete.
- Ultra Necrozma has been defeated.
- Mina’s opening level 51 battle has been won.
- The Ilima, Lana, Kiawe, Sophocles, and Nanu petal battles are complete.
- All seven petals have been collected.
2. Defeat Totem Ribombee and obtain Fairium Z
Return to Mina’s house in Seafolk Village after collecting every petal. Speak with her to create the Rainbow Flower. The flower summons Totem Ribombee, beginning the eighth official trial. Save before the battle if you want a clean retry point, then make sure your lead Pokémon is healed and carrying a useful item.
Totem Ribombee is level 55, has boosted stats, and uses Draining Kiss, Bug Buzz, Dazzling Gleam, and Quiver Dance. It holds an Occa Berry, which reduces the damage from one super-effective Fire attack. The ally is selected from Pelipper at level 52 or Blissey at level 53, and Ribombee can call the other ally after one is defeated.
Use strong physical Steel- or Poison-type attacks where possible. Physical damage avoids Ribombee’s favorable special matchup, while Steel also resists its Fairy attacks. Eliminate an ally quickly if Pelipper’s Scald or Blissey’s Light Screen, Heal Pulse, and Helping Hand are allowing Ribombee to survive. If Ribombee uses Quiver Dance, spend your Z-Move immediately rather than allowing several boosts. Defeating it completes Mina’s Trial and gives you Fairium Z.
- The Rainbow Flower has been created.
- Totem Ribombee has been defeated.
- The summoned Pelipper or Blissey has been controlled or defeated.
- Fairium Z is in the Bag.
- The eighth standard trial is complete.
3. Complete Hapu’s Grand Trial on Exeggutor Island
After Mina’s Trial, Hapu tells you to meet her on Exeggutor Island. Heal in Seafolk Village, then board the Magikarp-shaped boat at the southwest dock. On the island, go north to the Exeggutor that carried you to the upper ledge earlier. Interact with it, climb to the upper area, and approach Hapu. Choose the option to begin only after restoring HP, PP, and status conditions.
Hapu’s team is Golurk, Gastrodon, and Flygon at level 53, followed by level 54 Mudsdale. Golurk carries Ground- and Ghost-type attacks and may set Stealth Rock. Gastrodon is Water/Ground, so Electric attacks do nothing; use Grass attacks instead, while watching for Recover. Flygon is weak to Ice and Fairy attacks, but Dragon Breath can cause paralysis. Mudsdale is physically durable and holds Groundium Z, allowing one Tectonic Rage.
A strong special Water- or Grass-type attacker is useful against Golurk and Mudsdale. Keep a reliable Ice move for Flygon, but avoid exposing an Ice-type Pokémon to unnecessary Ground attacks. Hapu can use one Hyper Potion, so leave enough damage potential to finish a weakened Pokémon after she heals it. Defeat Hapu to receive Groundium Z and complete the fourth Grand Trial.
- Exeggutor Island has been reached by boat from Seafolk Village.
- The upper area has been reached with the northern Exeggutor.
- Hapu’s level 53–54 team has been defeated.
- Groundium Z is in the Bag.
- All eight standard trials and all four Grand Trials are complete.
4. Prepare at Tapu Village before Mount Lanakila
After the Grand Trial, heal in Seafolk Village and fly to Tapu Village on Ula’ula Island. The path into Mount Lanakila is north of the Pokémon Center. Before entering, buy Full Restores, Revives, and several forms of HP recovery. Carry status cures for paralysis, sleep, confusion, and poison; the League does not heal your team between Elite Four battles.
A practical first-clear target is a party mostly between levels 55 and 60, with no regular team member left far below the mid-50s. Train through optional trainers and wild Pokémon on Mount Lanakila or in Vast Poni Canyon if you need experience. These areas are safer for controlled leveling than relying on one overleveled Pokémon. If a battle goes badly, return to the nearest Pokémon Center rather than pushing forward with a damaged team.
Plan coverage for Steel, Rock, Ghost, and Flying opponents. Ground or Fighting attacks help against Molayne, Water, Grass, Fighting, and Ground-safe special attacks help against Olivia, and Dark or Ghost attacks are valuable against Acerola. Electric, Rock, and Ice attacks cover much of Kahili’s team. Bring both physical and special attackers, plus at least one sturdy special defender or resistance pivot. A fast Pokémon or priority move is useful for finishing weakened targets.
- Fairium Z and Groundium Z are secured.
- The party is mostly level 55 or higher.
- Recovery items and status cures are stocked.
- The team has physical and special damage options.
- At least one Pokémon can safely switch into special attacks.
5. Defeat Gladion and traverse Mount Lanakila
Enter Mount Lanakila from Tapu Village. Gladion challenges you near the lower entrance. In Ultra Moon, his team includes level 53 Crobat, level 53 Zoroark, level 55 Lucario, and level 55 Silvally. Zoroark uses Illusion, so its appearance may copy another Pokémon from his party; identify it from the moves and actual typing before choosing a super-effective attack.
Electric, Rock, Ice, and Fairy attacks are useful against Crobat and Zoroark, while Ground or Fighting coverage handles Lucario if you can avoid its counterattacks. Silvally’s type depends on its held Memory, so use a neutral attack or confirm its type before committing to a matchup. Gladion gives you a PP Max after the battle.
Continue through the mountain using the elevator and the Machamp Shove ride pager when the route requires moving boulders. Optional branches contain useful supplies, including healing items and technical records or TMs, but do not spend so much PP on optional trainers that the League approach becomes unsafe. Heal at the Pokémon Center near the summit before entering the League.
- Gladion has been defeated.
- The PP Max reward has been collected.
- Machamp Shove has been used to clear the blocked route.
- The team reaches the summit with adequate HP and PP.
6. Decide when to catch the level 65 Necrozma
During the first visit to Mount Lanakila after the Ultra Necrozma climax, a weakened Necrozma appears in a crater along the mountain route. This is a separate, catchable level 65 encounter; it is not the Ultra Necrozma boss from Ultra Megalopolis. Save immediately before interacting with it.
Bring a Pokémon that can inflict sleep or paralysis and, if available, use False Swipe to reduce Necrozma safely. Avoid using a move that can cause an accidental critical knockout or confusion damage. Carry a large supply of suitable Poké Balls and keep an escape plan if your catcher is overwhelmed. Catching Necrozma before the League is optional; if you leave the encounter for later, it remains available after you have become Champion.
Necrozma holds Ultranecrozium Z when caught. Do not confuse that item with the separate N-Solarizer or N-Lunarizer used to fuse Necrozma with Solgaleo or Lunala. If you want to preserve a particular nature or capture result, reset to the save made before the encounter.
- A save has been made before approaching Necrozma.
- The level 65 Mount Lanakila encounter has been caught or intentionally postponed.
- The encounter has not been confused with the earlier Ultra Necrozma boss battle.
7. Resupply and adjust moves at the League Pokémon Center
At the summit, use the Pokémon Center beside the League entrance as your final preparation point. Restore the entire party, refill important PP, and buy enough Full Restores, Revives, and status cures for a sequence of five major battles. The Elite Four can be challenged in any order, but each victory leaves your team in its current condition.
The Move Reminder is available in this Pokémon Center. Spend Heart Scales to restore a forgotten recovery move, important coverage move, or late level-up attack if your current moveset has a clear weakness. Check held items, abilities, Z-Crystals, and lead order before entering. Save outside the League entrance after all preparation is complete.
- Every active Pokémon is healed and none is fainted.
- Important moves have full PP.
- The Move Reminder has been used if necessary.
- Held items and Z-Crystals are assigned deliberately.
- A final save has been made.
8. Defeat the Elite Four and Hau
The first-clear Elite Four teams range from levels 56 to 57. Molayne specializes in Steel types and can be pressured with Ground or Fighting attacks, although Magnezone and Metagross punish careless switches. Olivia uses Rock types; Water, Grass, Fighting, and Ground coverage are useful, but Cradily makes a Water-only plan unreliable. Acerola uses Ghost types, so Dark and Ghost attacks are effective, while Froslass can threaten with Blizzard, Shadow Ball, Confuse Ray, and Ice Shard. Kahili uses Flying types; Electric, Rock, and Ice attacks are valuable, but prepare for Toucannon’s Flyinium Z.
Heal manually after every Elite Four victory. Restore HP before entering knockout range, cure status immediately when it threatens a key matchup, and use Ethers or Elixirs on moves that are central to the remaining battles. If a critical hit causes a faint, revive the Pokémon before continuing rather than entering the next chamber with an incomplete team.
Hau is the final first-clear battle. His fixed Pokémon are level 59 Raichu, level 58 Tauros, level 58 Noivern, and level 59 Crabominable. His fifth and sixth Pokémon depend on your starter. If you chose Rowlet, he uses level 58 Flareon and level 60 Primarina. If you chose Litten, he uses level 58 Vaporeon and level 60 Decidueye. If you chose Popplio, he uses level 58 Leafeon and level 60 Incineroar.
Use Ground or strong neutral coverage against Raichu, Ice or Fairy attacks against Noivern, and a sturdy answer to Crabominable’s Ice Hammer and Fighting attacks. Prepare for Hau’s final starter evolution and its Z-Move rather than planning only for the first four Pokémon. Defeating Hau awards the Champion title and completes the main story’s League objective.
- Molayne, Olivia, Acerola, and Kahili have all been defeated.
- The party was healed and important PP restored between battles.
- Hau’s starter-dependent team has been identified.
- Hau has been defeated.
- The Champion title has been awarded.
Before you move on
- The Ultra Megalopolis climax is complete and Ultra Necrozma has been defeated.
- Mina’s Trial has been completed and Fairium Z is in the Bag.
- Totem Ribombee has been defeated.
- Hapu’s Grand Trial has been completed on Exeggutor Island and Groundium Z is in the Bag.
- The Trainer Passport shows eight standard trials and four Grand Trials completed.
- Gladion has been defeated at Mount Lanakila.
- The level 65 Mount Lanakila Necrozma has been caught or deliberately postponed from a pre-encounter save.
- The team enters the League healed, with restored PP, no fainted members, and adequate recovery items.
- All four Elite Four members and Hau have been defeated.
- The Champion title has been awarded.
Champion and Immediate Aftermath — How the Story Extends
Defeat the Elite Four and Hau to become Alola’s first Champion, then load the completed save and begin the post-Champion Ultra Beast investigation. In Pokémon Ultra Moon, the investigation leads to Ancient Poni Path and Poni Grove, where you receive Type: Null and can encounter the two available Stakataka. After the grove is cleared, the game returns you home and Sophocles arrives to announce the Festival Plaza emergency. Team Rainbow Rocket’s opening battle belongs to the next chapter, not this one. The Altar of the Moone, Dawn Wings Necrozma, Ultra Megalopolis, Ultra Necrozma, and the first Ultra Warp Ride lesson are all part of the pre-League story and should not be repeated here.
Defeat the Elite Four and Hau
Enter the Pokémon League at Mount Lanakila only after the pre-League Ultra Necrozma climax, Mina’s Trial, and Hapu’s Grand Trial are complete. The Elite Four can be challenged in any order: Molayne, Olivia, Acerola, and Kahili. The game does not automatically restore your Pokémon or replenish PP between these battles, so carry healing items, status cures, and PP-restoring items. Use the lobby and Bag between fights rather than beginning the next battle with weakened members.
After all four Elite Four battles, go to the Champion’s chamber. Professor Kukui appears first, but he does not become the final opponent. Hau interrupts and challenges you for the Champion title. His team varies according to your starter choice, but he always uses Raichu, Tauros, Noivern, and Crabominable in addition to his starter’s final evolution. Keep answers ready for Electric, Normal, Flying, Fighting, Ice, and the type combination of his starter. Preserve your strongest Z-Move for a dangerous matchup rather than spending it automatically at the beginning of the battle.
Defeat Hau to enter the Hall of Fame. Watch the Champion ceremony and credits completely. When the game returns to the title screen, load the completed save. You will resume in your bedroom in Iki Town, not at the Pokémon League entrance.
- All four Elite Four members have been defeated.
- Hau has been defeated as the final League challenger.
- The Champion ceremony and credits have finished.
- The completed save has been loaded in the Iki Town bedroom.
Trigger the post-Champion Poni Island investigation
Leave your bedroom, go downstairs, and exit the house. The Ultra Recon Squad appears and explains that an Ultra Beast has been seen on Poni Island. Accept the trip if you want to begin immediately. You can also postpone the journey and return to the event later, but do not expect Poni Grove to be open before becoming Champion.
Travel to Ancient Poni Path and go northeast. Hau and Wicke are waiting there. During the conversation, Wicke gives you a Big Malasada, a level 60 Type: Null received from Gladion, and the Memory items that change Silvally’s type. Type: Null is a gift Pokémon, not a normal wild encounter. Make room in your party or PC before speaking to Wicke so the gift can be received.
After the conversation, continue north through the entrance that was previously blocked. This leads into Poni Grove. Heal first if your party is damaged, and save before entering the tall grass if you want a recovery point for the Ultra Beast encounters. The encounter battles in this chapter use your normal party; the Battle Agency restriction does not begin until the separate Festival Plaza event in the next chapter.
- The post-Champion event outside the Iki Town house has been triggered.
- Ancient Poni Path has been reached.
- Wicke has given you Type: Null and the Memory items.
- The entrance to Poni Grove is open.
- The game has been saved before the Stakataka encounters.
Clear Poni Grove and resolve both Stakataka encounters
Enter Poni Grove and follow the Ultra Recon Squad’s instructions. A cutscene gives you five Beast Balls and explains that additional Beast Balls can be purchased at Aether Paradise. In Ultra Moon, the version-exclusive Ultra Beast in this area is Stakataka. Walk through the tall grass until the first Stakataka appears, then weaken it carefully before throwing Balls.
Stakataka is Rock and Steel type. Fighting-, Ground-, and Water-type attacks are super effective, but avoid using a powerful attack when its HP is already low. False Swipe is useful if you have it. Sleep or paralysis improves the capture attempt, while a Pokémon with suitable defenses can prevent Stakataka from forcing repeated switches. Beast Balls are the intended specialized option for this investigation, but carry other Balls as backups if the battle continues.
After the first encounter is caught or knocked out, remain in Poni Grove and continue walking through the grass until the second Stakataka appears. Ultra Moon provides two Stakataka encounters in Poni Grove. There is no third encounter for Hau or for the Ultra Recon Squad. If you knock out a Stakataka and want another chance, reset to the save made before the encounter; do not assume the game will create a replacement encounter.
When both available Stakataka encounters have been caught or otherwise cleared, the investigation ends. A cutscene returns you to your house automatically. This is the endpoint of the chapter’s playable post-Champion investigation.
- The Poni Grove investigation has been entered after becoming Champion.
- The five Beast Balls have been received.
- The first Stakataka encounter has been caught or cleared.
- The second Stakataka encounter has been caught or cleared.
- No nonexistent third Stakataka encounter has been counted.
- The player has been returned to the house after clearing Poni Grove.
Save the correct handoff for Team Rainbow Rocket
After the Poni Grove investigation ends and you return home, do not travel directly into Festival Plaza to begin the next event. The next scripted trigger is Sophocles visiting your house after the grove objective has been cleared. He reports that Festival Plaza has been taken over and asks for help. The Festival Plaza takeover, the Battle Agency rental battle, and the Eject Button sequence belong to the next chapter.
This chapter has no required post-League trainer battle after the Stakataka investigation. The normal party is used for the Stakataka encounters, and you can heal freely after returning home. If you are preparing for the next chapter, heal the party, restock status cures and general healing items, and create a fresh save after the return-home scene. Keep the pre-League Altar and Ultra Necrozma events separate from this save: they are already completed before the League and do not replay after the credits.
The correct story handoff is therefore: defeat Hau, load the completed save, receive Type: Null and the Memory items, clear both Poni Grove Stakataka encounters, return home, and wait for Sophocles to initiate the Festival Plaza incident. Continue with the Team Rainbow Rocket chapter only after that visit begins.
- The player has returned home after resolving Poni Grove.
- Sophocles is the next required story trigger.
- The Festival Plaza takeover has not been incorrectly completed in this chapter.
- The Battle Agency rental battle has not been incorrectly included here.
- The party has been healed and a fresh save has been created for the next chapter.
Before you move on
- The Elite Four have been defeated.
- Hau has been defeated as the final Pokémon League opponent.
- The credits have finished and the completed save has been loaded in the Iki Town bedroom.
- The player has reached Ancient Poni Path and received level 60 Type: Null plus the Memory items from Wicke.
- The player has entered Poni Grove after becoming Champion.
- Both Ultra Moon Stakataka encounters have been caught or the investigation has been cleared.
- No nonexistent third Stakataka encounter has been counted.
- The game has returned the player home after the Poni Grove investigation.
- Sophocles is prepared to initiate the Festival Plaza incident.
- The Battle Agency rental battle and Team Rainbow Rocket castle sequence have been left for the next chapter.
- The player understands that the Altar of the Moone, Dawn Wings Necrozma, Ultra Megalopolis, Ultra Necrozma, and first Ultra Warp Ride lesson occur before the Pokémon League.
- The party has been healed and a fresh save has been created for the Team Rainbow Rocket handoff.
Ultra Warp Ride Reference and Reverse World
This chapter is a reference for Pokémon Ultra Moon players who have already completed the first Altar of the Moone ceremony, the initial Ultra Warp Ride and the Ultra Megalopolis climax. If you followed the earlier Poni progression chapters, skip the repeated story explanation and begin with the repeatable Ultra Warp Ride section. The first story ride occurs before Mina’s Trial, Hapu’s Grand Trial and the Pokémon League. After Ultra Necrozma is defeated, the Altar of the Moone becomes the practical launch point for later rides. The post-Champion reverse-world visit is a separate use of the altar and has different party and time requirements.
Reference: the first altar ceremony has already been completed
In the main story, the player reaches the Altar of the Moone with Lillie, the Sun Flute and the Moon Flute before completing Mina’s Trial or Hapu’s Grand Trial. The ceremony evolves Nebby, which is Cosmoem at this point, into Lunala in Ultra Moon. Necrozma then absorbs Lunala and becomes Dawn Wings Necrozma. This fused form is part of the story sequence and is not a normal capture encounter.
The altar sequence is followed by the first Ultra Warp Ride. In Ultra Moon, the Ultra Recon Squad supplies Solgaleo for this initial ride because Lunala has been absorbed. The player must enter a white wormhole to reach Ultra Megalopolis and continue the Necrozma storyline. Colored wormholes lead elsewhere and do not advance this first story objective.
After reaching Ultra Megalopolis, the required route leads through Megalo Tower to the Ultra Necrozma battle. Ultra Necrozma cannot be caught during this confrontation. If the battle is lost, heal in Alola, adjust the party and return through the same story route; the sequence is not permanently missable. Players who already followed the earlier Poni chapters should treat this entire section as completed reference material rather than repeating it.
- The first Altar of the Moone ceremony is complete.
- Nebby evolved into Lunala before being absorbed by Necrozma.
- The initial ride used the supplied Solgaleo.
- The white wormhole led to Ultra Megalopolis.
- Ultra Necrozma was defeated at Megalo Tower.
Confirm that repeatable Ultra Warp Ride is unlocked
After Ultra Necrozma is defeated, return to the Altar of the Moone on Poni Island and examine the wormhole at the far end of the altar. It now provides repeatable access to Ultra Warp Ride. You do not need to repeat the original flute ceremony, and you do not need to complete the Pokémon League before using the feature. The first story ride and the later repeatable rides are separate stages of the same mechanic.
Later rides can take you to Ultra Space Wilds, Ultra Beast homeworlds and other destinations. White wormholes are the important targets for Ultra Beast hunting, while colored wormholes can lead to Ultra Space Wilds and, depending on the destination and prerequisites, legendary Pokémon encounters. Four wormhole categories lead to Ultra Space Wilds and another category leads to an Ultra Beast world, so the color and appearance of a portal matter when selecting a target.
If you want to change the legendary Pokémon used for the ride, speak with the Ultra Recon Squad in Ultra Megalopolis after the Necrozma sequence. Ultra Moon allows a choice between Solgaleo and Lunala for later rides. Their selection changes the mount used for the minigame, not the basic availability of the destinations.
- Ultra Necrozma has been defeated.
- The Altar of the Moone wormhole can be examined again.
- A repeatable Ultra Warp Ride begins from the altar.
- The Ultra Recon Squad can change the later ride Pokémon.
- White wormholes are being reserved for Ultra Beast destinations.
Receive the immediate post-Necrozma rewards
After the Ultra Necrozma sequence, the Ultra Recon Squad offers Poipole in Ultra Megalopolis. Accept it there or return to the appropriate Ultra Recon Squad member later if you want to postpone taking the gift. Keep in mind that Poipole is a gift Pokémon, not a wild Ultra Warp Ride encounter.
Lusamine gives the player three Beast Balls after the Necrozma sequence. Beast Balls are designed for Ultra Beasts and have extremely poor effectiveness against ordinary Pokémon, so keep them for Ultra Beast encounters. Additional Beast Balls can be purchased later at Aether Paradise after the feature is established.
The story rewards do not require you to begin hunting immediately. If the party is damaged or lacks capture tools, return to a Pokémon Center, buy healing supplies and prepare a dedicated capture lead before starting repeated rides.
- Poipole has been accepted or remains available from the Ultra Recon Squad.
- Lusamine has awarded three Beast Balls.
- The party has healing items and status cures.
- Additional Beast Balls can be purchased before a longer hunting session.
Use Ultra Warp Ride without wasting attempts
During the ride, collect energy orbs to maintain speed and avoid obstacles that drain your momentum. Aim for the wormhole type associated with the Pokémon you want rather than entering the first portal visible. Longer travel generally improves the quality of available wormholes, but a difficult ride is not useful if repeated collisions prevent you from reaching the intended destination.
If you enter an Ultra Space Wilds area or an undesired destination, inspect the return wormhole and use it to go back to the altar. The ride can then be started again. This is the normal recovery method and does not require restarting the entire story.
Prepare a lead with False Swipe or another controlled-damage move, plus sleep or paralysis if possible. Add a bulky switch-in with reliable recovery or useful resistances, because Ultra Beast and legendary encounters can defeat a fragile lead before capture attempts succeed. Carry ordinary Poké Balls as well as Beast Balls; use Beast Balls for Ultra Beasts, not for standard Pokémon or most legendary targets.
- The lead can reduce targets without causing accidental knockouts.
- A sleep or paralysis move is available.
- A durable switch-in is ready.
- Beast Balls are reserved for Ultra Beasts.
- The player knows how to return from an unwanted Wilds destination.
Complete the remaining pre-League route in the correct order
The Ultra Megalopolis sequence is not the end of the island challenge. After returning to Poni, complete Mina’s Trial and then Hapu’s Grand Trial before entering Mount Lanakila for the Pokémon League. Repeatable Ultra Warp Ride is available at this point, so hunting can be done before the League if the party and supplies are ready. The earlier ride and Ultra Necrozma battle should not be moved after the League in a main-story walkthrough.
If you are preparing for Ultra Necrozma rather than documenting a completed run, save before the altar story sequence and keep several trained Pokémon available. Do not rely on a single sweeper: Ultra Necrozma’s high offensive power can defeat an unprepared team quickly. A bulky special-defense option, priority damage or a Focus Sash strategy can provide a survival window, but no single type is universally safe against its coverage.
- Mina’s Trial is complete after the Necrozma sequence.
- Hapu’s Grand Trial is complete before Mount Lanakila.
- The League has not been incorrectly placed before the altar climax.
- The party is healed before extended Ultra Warp Ride sessions.
Enter the reverse world after becoming Champion
After becoming Champion, return to the Altar of the Moone with Lunala in the party. The altar’s remaining dimensional distortion can lead to the reverse world, represented in Ultra Moon by the alternate Altar of the Sunne. This is not the same destination as ordinary repeatable Ultra Warp Ride, and it is not required to unlock wormhole hunting. The altar distortion becomes available after the Necrozma sequence, while the post-Champion visit is the appropriate point for the optional reverse-world and Cosmog-related objectives.
For Ultra Moon, the portal opens during the game’s daytime when Lunala is in the party. Dawn Wings Necrozma can also satisfy the corresponding condition during daytime, but the fused form must be present in the party. If the option does not appear, check that the Pokémon is actually in the active party, that Ultra Necrozma has been defeated and that the game’s in-game time is correct. Ultra Moon runs twelve hours opposite the Nintendo 3DS system clock, so an afternoon system time may be treated as nighttime by the game.
The reverse world changes the displayed time and provides access to the alternate altar and lake area. It does not replace the normal altar portal used for Ultra Warp Ride. If your goal is Ultra Beast or legendary hunting, return to the original Altar of the Moone and use its ordinary wormhole interaction instead.
- The player has become Champion for the intended post-game visit.
- Lunala or Dawn Wings Necrozma is in the party.
- The game is in Ultra Moon daytime.
- The reverse-world option is being distinguished from ordinary Ultra Warp Ride.
- The player returns to the original altar for wormhole hunting.
Before you move on
- The chapter is being used as reference after the first story ride and Ultra Necrozma battle.
- The Altar of the Moone launches repeatable Ultra Warp Ride.
- The player can distinguish white wormholes, colored wormholes and the reverse-world distortion.
- Poipole has been received or remains available in Ultra Megalopolis.
- Three Beast Balls have been received from Lusamine.
- Mina’s Trial and Hapu’s Grand Trial remain correctly placed before the League.
- After becoming Champion, Lunala or Dawn Wings Necrozma is available in the party.
- The reverse-world portal opens during Ultra Moon’s daytime period.
- The hunting party includes controlled damage, a status move, a durable switch-in and adequate healing supplies.

Ultra Warp Ride: Hunting Ultra Beasts and Legendary Wormholes
Ultra Warp Ride becomes available at the Altar of the Moone during the Necrozma crisis. The first white wormhole sends you to Ultra Megalopolis, where you must defeat Ultra Necrozma. After that battle, return to the altar to hunt Ultra Beasts in white wormholes and Legendary Pokémon in colored Ultra Space Wilds. Distance, wormhole tiers, portal color, and Legendary prerequisites determine which targets can appear.
Unlock the ride and choose the correct mount
During the story sequence at the Altar of the Moone, the Ultra Recon Squad lends you Solgaleo so you can travel to Ultra Megalopolis. For this first trip, enter a white wormhole. White wormholes are reserved for the route to Ultra Megalopolis until you defeat Ultra Necrozma, so do not expect Ultra Beast encounters during this initial ride.
After defeating Ultra Necrozma at Megalo Tower, speak with Zossie in Ultra Megalopolis. You can choose whether later rides use Solgaleo or Lunala, then return to the Altar of the Moone. Interact with the wormhole at the altar whenever you want to begin another ride. The mount does not change which Pokémon can appear, but Solgaleo's smaller visual profile can make hazards easier for some players to see.
- Use the first white wormhole to reach Ultra Megalopolis.
- Defeat Ultra Necrozma before farming Ultra Beast worlds.
- Speak with Zossie afterward to choose Solgaleo or Lunala.
- Heal and save before beginning a hunting run.
Set controls and survive the flight
Ultra Warp Ride begins with motion controls. Tilt the Nintendo 3DS to steer and press A while the system is held neutral to recenter the gyroscope. After completing the first ride, visit the Game Freak building in Heahea City and speak with the Aether Foundation employee there to switch to Circle Pad controls. Circle Pad steering is usually easier for long searches, but use whichever method gives you precise corrections.
Collect the orange energy spheres to increase speed and extend the distance you can travel. Avoid blue electrified obstacles: collisions reduce speed and energy, and losing enough speed near a wormhole can pull you into it automatically. Energy spheres become less common the farther you travel, so steer conservatively once a suitable portal appears.
- Switch to Circle Pad controls at the Game Freak building if motion steering is unreliable.
- Collect orange energy spheres when the path is clear.
- Avoid blue hazards rather than taking a risky line for one energy sphere.
- Keep the mount centered when you are trying to pass unwanted portals.
Read portal colors and wormhole tiers
Red portals lead to Cliff World, blue portals to Water World, green portals to Rocky World, and yellow portals to Cave World. These colored worlds contain ordinary wild Pokémon and, when the correct Legendary pool is available, Legendary encounters. Portal color narrows the possibilities, but color alone does not guarantee a Legendary.
Each wormhole has a tier shown by its surrounding aura: plain portals, portals with one halo, portals with two halos, and portals with a flower-shaped aura. Greater travel distance improves the chance of seeing better tiers and increases the chance of finding rare Pokémon. A flower-shaped portal is the important Legendary marker: it produces a Legendary if an eligible Legendary remains uncaught in that color's pool. If all eligible Legendaries for that color have already been caught, it can instead produce a regular wild encounter.
- Red means Cliff World; blue means Water World; green means Rocky World; yellow means Cave World.
- Look for more elaborate auras at greater distances.
- Treat a flower-shaped aura as the preferred Legendary portal.
- Remember that a colored portal without the flower aura is not automatically Legendary.
Target Ultra Moon's white-wormhole worlds
After Ultra Necrozma is defeated, white wormholes lead to Ultra Beast homeworlds. In Ultra Moon, Ultra Deep Sea contains Nihilego, Ultra Desert contains Pheromosa, Ultra Plant contains Xurkitree, Ultra Crater contains Celesteela, and Ultra Ruin contains Guzzlord. The original seven wormhole Ultra Beasts can be caught repeatedly, so a failed capture or accidental knockout does not permanently remove the target.
The white portal's tier affects which Ultra Beast world is more likely to appear, while distance improves the overall quality of the portals. For a specific Ultra Beast, prioritize the correct homeworld rather than throwing Beast Balls at every white-wormhole encounter. Guzzlord is the difficult target because its Ultra Ruin world is rarer than the more common Ultra Beast worlds.
- Nihilego: Ultra Deep Sea.
- Pheromosa: Ultra Desert.
- Xurkitree: Ultra Plant.
- Celesteela: Ultra Crater.
- Guzzlord: Ultra Ruin.
- Do not confuse Ultra Moon's Pheromosa and Celesteela with Ultra Sun's version-exclusive Buzzwole and Kartana.
Prepare prerequisites for Legendary encounters
Legendary Pokémon appear in colored Ultra Space Wilds, normally at level 60. Some require other Legendary Pokémon to be in your party when you begin the ride. In Ultra Moon, Kyogre is found through a blue portal, Lugia and Latias are also blue-portal targets, Palkia and Regigigas are yellow-portal targets, and Rayquaza requires both Kyogre and Groudon in your party. Giratina requires both Dialga and Palkia in your party. Version-exclusive prerequisites may require trading with another game.
Place every required prerequisite in the party before starting the ride, not merely in a PC box. When the correct flower-shaped portal appears, enter it and save after landing, before interacting with the Legendary. A Legendary can be caught once; if you defeat it or run away, it can be encountered again, but catching it removes it from that wormhole pool.
- Check the target's color before launching a run.
- Put required prerequisite Legendaries in the active party.
- Save after reaching the desired Ultra Space Wild.
- Use a separate plan for one-time Legendary captures and repeatable Ultra Beasts.
Catch safely and use the right balls
Bring a catcher with False Swipe or another move that leaves the target with controlled low HP. Follow with sleep or paralysis. Sleep is generally the stronger capture status, while paralysis remains active and is safer if the battle is likely to last many turns. Avoid poison, burn, confusion, recoil, and damaging weather effects because they can finish the target while you are throwing balls.
Beast Balls are intended for Ultra Beasts and are inefficient against Legendary Pokémon. Use them for Nihilego, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela, Guzzlord, and other Ultra Beasts. Use Ultra Balls or Timer Balls for Legendaries, with Dusk Balls when the encounter's location qualifies. Keep healing items available because these encounters are level 60 and may carry strong coverage or recovery moves.
- Use False Swipe before applying status when practical.
- Prefer sleep or paralysis over damaging status effects.
- Reserve Beast Balls for Ultra Beasts.
- Use Timer Balls during long Legendary battles.
- Save before the encounter so a knockout or failed capture can be retried.
Skip bad portals and leave unwanted wild areas
During the flight, continue past a portal that does not match your target. Stay near the center when possible and keep collecting energy until a better portal appears. Once the ride pulls you into a portal, that flight ends, so entering a poor portal wastes the search.
If you land in an unwanted colored Ultra Space Wild, do not fight the resident Pokémon. Walk back to the entrance wormhole and interact with it to return to the Altar of the Moone, then begin another ride. If you enter a desired Legendary or Ultra Beast battle, leaving or fleeing forfeits that attempt, so save before interacting with the target.
- Skip unsuitable portals instead of accepting the first available one.
- Return through the entrance wormhole from an unwanted wild area.
- Save before a desired encounter.
- Restart the ride after an unsuitable landing rather than wasting balls.
Before you move on
- Ultra Warp Ride is available from the Altar of the Moone after the Ultra Necrozma sequence.
- You can switch between Solgaleo and Lunala for later rides by speaking with Zossie in Ultra Megalopolis.
- You can identify red, blue, green, yellow, and white portals and recognize the four wormhole aura tiers.
- You know the Ultra Moon white-wormhole targets: Nihilego, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela, and Guzzlord.
- You can prepare active-party prerequisites for targets such as Rayquaza and Giratina.
- Your catching team has False Swipe or controlled weakening, sleep or paralysis, healing items, Ultra Balls or Timer Balls, and Beast Balls reserved for Ultra Beasts.

Ultra Megalopolis and Ultra Necrozma Battle Reference
This chapter covers Pokémon Ultra Moon’s pre-League Altar of the Moone, first Ultra Warp Ride, Ultra Megalopolis and Megalo Tower sequence. It is not a post-Champion progression gate. The story route occurs after the Poni Island altar events and before Mina’s Trial, Hapu’s Grand Trial and the Pokémon League. The level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma and level 60 Ultra Necrozma battles are mandatory and cannot be captured. The separate level 65 Necrozma in Mount Lanakila is the proper capture encounter later in the same pre-League progression.
Complete the Altar of the Moone sequence
Finish the Poni Island story route through Vast Poni Canyon until Lillie leads you to the Altar of the Moone. Before climbing onto the altar platform, heal your party, restore important move PP and make a manual save. You will face two major Necrozma battles with story events between them, so this is the best point to change your lead Pokémon and prepare healing items.
Use the Sun Flute and Moon Flute together at the altar. Nebby evolves into Lunala, but the event is interrupted when Necrozma emerges from the Ultra Wormhole, overwhelms Lunala and absorbs it. In Pokémon Ultra Moon, the fused form is Dawn Wings Necrozma.
The resulting battle is a forced level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma encounter. It is not a normal wild battle and Poké Balls cannot capture it. Dawn Wings Necrozma uses Moongeist Beam, Moonlight, Psychic and Power Gem. Dark- and Ghost-type attacks are useful for dealing super-effective damage, but do not rely on a frail attacker that can be defeated before moving. A Pokémon with strong special bulk, a resistance to Psychic or a reliable priority move can help stabilize the fight.
After Dawn Wings Necrozma is defeated, it separates from Lunala and retreats through the Ultra Wormhole. Lunala is restored to your side, and the Ultra Recon Squad explains that Necrozma has returned to Ultra Megalopolis. The story then gives you a way to pursue it.
- Heal and save before using the flutes.
- Expect a mandatory level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma battle.
- Do not waste Poké Balls or the Master Ball on this encounter.
- Confirm that Lunala has returned before beginning the Ultra Megalopolis pursuit.
Take the first Ultra Warp Ride to Ultra Megalopolis
In Ultra Moon, the Ultra Recon Squad provides Solgaleo for the initial pursuit through the Ultra Wormhole. This does not permanently replace your own Lunala. The supplied Solgaleo is the story ride Pokémon for this trip, while Lunala remains part of the story and can still be used normally afterward.
Follow the introductory Ultra Warp Ride until you can enter the intended white warp hole. This first trip is a fixed story sequence rather than the later free exploration system used to hunt Ultra Beasts and legendary Pokémon. Do not treat it as a normal wormhole-hunting run or spend time searching for a specific legendary destination.
Enter the white warp hole to reach Ultra Megalopolis. If you are using motion controls and find the ride difficult, concentrate on collecting the orange energy orbs and steering toward the available warp holes rather than trying to explore every part of the route. Once Ultra Megalopolis loads, the game places you near the city route leading to Megalo Tower.
- Use the Ultra Recon Squad’s Solgaleo for the first story ride.
- Reach the white warp hole that leads to Ultra Megalopolis.
- Treat this as a story ride, not unrestricted Ultra Warp Ride exploration.
- Keep healing items available before entering the city.
Cross Ultra Megalopolis and prepare for Megalo Tower
Ultra Megalopolis is largely a linear story area during this first visit. Speak with the Ultra Recon Squad members, including Phyco and Soliera in Ultra Moon, then follow the central route north toward Megalo Tower. The city does not function as a regular Alolan town during this sequence, so do not expect a normal shopping stop or Pokémon Center to replace the preparation you should have completed before leaving Alola.
Restore your team before the final approach. Carry Revives, strong healing items and status cures, and make another manual save before starting the tower climb or immediately before the final confrontation if the game permits you to save there. Use a sturdy lead Pokémon rather than a Pokémon that depends on surviving with only a Focus Sash, since entry hazards or prior damage can remove that safety margin.
Continue up the visible stairs and walkways. There are no required wild-Pokémon captures or side routes in the first Ultra Megalopolis visit. Your objective is to reach the top of Megalo Tower and confront Necrozma.
- Speak with the Ultra Recon Squad in the city.
- Restore HP and PP before the tower battle.
- Carry Revives, healing items and status cures.
- Save before committing to the Ultra Necrozma battle.
Defeat level 60 Ultra Necrozma
At the top of Megalo Tower, fused Necrozma absorbs additional light and uses Ultra Burst to become Ultra Necrozma. This is a mandatory level 60 battle. Ultra Necrozma is Psychic/Dragon-type, has the Neuroforce ability and receives powerful battle-stat enhancements from its aura. Its listed moves are Photon Geyser, Smart Strike, Power Gem and Dragon Pulse.
The move coverage prevents one simple type answer from solving the battle automatically. Fairy-type Pokémon can help against Dragon Pulse but must survive Smart Strike and Power Gem. Dark-type Pokémon avoid Psychic-type damage but still have to withstand Smart Strike, Power Gem and Dragon Pulse. Ghost-type attackers can deal super-effective damage, but they must avoid being removed by a strong opening hit. A bulky Pokémon, Intimidate support, paralysis, screens, a Focus Sash used from full health or a carefully planned sacrificial switch can create the turn needed to attack.
Use a Z-Move when the user is likely to survive long enough to act and the attack will produce meaningful damage. Priority moves become more valuable after Ultra Necrozma has been weakened. Status conditions can help, but direct damage is usually the safer opening because Ultra Necrozma can knock out a setup Pokémon before it contributes. If you have a Pokémon with a reliable super-effective physical attack, preserve it until an opening is created rather than sending it into an unreduced first hit.
Ultra Necrozma cannot be captured. If you lose, reload the save made before the battle when possible. If you did not save there, recover at the nearest Pokémon Center and return through the Altar of the Moone route to retry. Before returning, change the lead, restore PP, raise underleveled team members and add a Pokémon that can survive the first attack. Repeating the same opening without changing the matchup usually produces the same result.
- Prepare for a level 60 Psychic/Dragon Ultra Necrozma.
- Account for Photon Geyser, Smart Strike, Power Gem and Dragon Pulse.
- Do not assume Fairy, Dark or Ghost alone guarantees safety.
- Use a Z-Move or priority attack during a reliable damage window.
- Reload or recover and revise the plan after a failed attempt.
Finish the sequence and continue toward the League
After Ultra Necrozma is defeated, the stolen light returns to Ultra Megalopolis. The story forms Dawn Wings Necrozma and Ultra Necrozma are not added to your party. The Ultra Recon Squad then offers you a level 40 Poipole. You can accept it immediately or decline temporarily and return to Ultra Megalopolis later to receive it.
After the Poipole event, the unrestricted Ultra Warp Ride system becomes available. You can later switch the Pokémon used for the ride, including the available Solgaleo and Lunala options. This free exploration feature is separate from the first story ride to Ultra Megalopolis.
Return to Alola and continue the main story in its proper order. Complete Mina’s Trial, then meet Hapu on Exeggutor Island and complete Hapu’s Grand Trial. These are still pre-League objectives and should not be moved into the post-game portion of the guide.
When you later climb Mount Lanakila toward the Pokémon League, you will find a separate level 65 Necrozma in the crater. That encounter is a normal capture opportunity. Save before interacting with it, weaken it carefully and use sleep, paralysis or another reliable status condition alongside appropriate Poké Balls. If you defeat or flee from it, it can be made available again after defending your Champion title, but saving first is the simplest way to preserve the immediate attempt.
The Mount Lanakila encounter is plain Psychic-type Necrozma, not Dawn Wings Necrozma or Ultra Necrozma. After catching it, obtain the Ultranecrozium Z at Mount Lanakila so a compatible Necrozma can use Ultra Burst later.
- Defeat Ultra Necrozma and complete the return dialogue.
- Accept or later collect the level 40 Poipole gift.
- Confirm that unrestricted Ultra Warp Ride is available.
- Complete Mina’s Trial and Hapu’s Grand Trial before entering the League.
- Save before the separate level 65 Mount Lanakila Necrozma encounter.
- Do not confuse the catchable Mount Lanakila encounter with either story battle.
Before you move on
- Level 50 Dawn Wings Necrozma was defeated at the Altar of the Moone.
- The first Ultra Warp Ride was completed using the Ultra Moon story route.
- The white warp hole led to Ultra Megalopolis.
- Megalo Tower was climbed and level 60 Ultra Necrozma was defeated.
- Level 40 Poipole was offered by the Ultra Recon Squad.
- Unrestricted Ultra Warp Ride became available.
- The player returned to Alola and continued to Mina’s Trial and Hapu’s Grand Trial.
- The separate level 65 Mount Lanakila Necrozma was identified as the catchable encounter.

Ultra Necrozma Tactical Reference
Ultra Necrozma is the level 60 pre-League climax at the top of Megalo Tower in Ultra Megalopolis. In Ultra Moon, the preceding story battle uses Dawn Wings Necrozma, after which Necrozma Ultra Bursts into Ultra Necrozma. This encounter is forced, cannot be escaped, and cannot be captured. Defeat it, finish the remaining story scenes, and continue to Mina’s Trial and Hapu’s Grand Trial only if those objectives are not already complete in your playthrough.
Prepare before the summit battle
Heal the entire party and restore the PP of your important attacks before approaching the top of Megalo Tower. Save immediately before beginning the Ultra Necrozma battle so you can retry without repeating the entire Ultra Megalopolis route. Bring strong healing items, Revives and status cures for the surrounding sequence, even though Ultra Necrozma’s listed story moves do not normally inflict a regular status condition.
Several Pokémon near level 60 make this battle much safer. A party in the low-to-mid 50s can still win with a strong counter and a good plan, but Ultra Necrozma has a major stat advantage and can defeat ordinary neutral targets in one hit. Bring at least one durable Pokémon, one reliable physical attacker and a backup answer rather than relying on a single fragile sweeper.
Do not bring a capture plan for this fight. The fused Dawn Wings battle and the following Ultra Necrozma encounter are story battles involving Nebby and are not the point at which Necrozma can be caught. Save your Poké Balls for the level 65 Necrozma encounter on Mount Lanakila later.
- Heal the party and restore PP.
- Save before the summit battle.
- Bring strong healing items and Revives.
- Prepare a bulky Pokémon and a physical attacker.
- Do not waste turns throwing Poké Balls.
Know the Ultra Necrozma moveset
Ultra Necrozma is level 60, Psychic/Dragon type, and has the Neuroforce Ability. Its story moveset is Photon Geyser, Smart Strike, Power Gem and Dragon Pulse. Photon Geyser is Psychic type, Smart Strike is Steel type, Power Gem is Rock type and Dragon Pulse is Dragon type.
The battle begins with Ultra Necrozma’s aura raising all of its stats by one stage. Neuroforce further increases the damage of its super-effective attacks. This combination is why a Pokémon that appears suitable on paper can still be knocked out immediately if it enters at low health or has an unplanned weakness.
Dark types are immune to Photon Geyser, but Smart Strike, Power Gem and Dragon Pulse still threaten them. Fairy types are immune to Dragon Pulse and can strike for super-effective damage, but Smart Strike is super-effective against them. Steel types resist Psychic, Dragon, Rock and Steel attacks, making a bulky Steel Pokémon one of the safer general-purpose switches if its secondary typing does not create another weakness.
- Expect a direct level 60 battle.
- Account for the one-stage stat boosts from the aura.
- Plan around all four coverage moves.
- Do not rely on one immunity without considering the other attacks.
Choose a durable counter
Alolan Muk is a practical story-mode counter if you trained one. Its Dark typing blocks Photon Geyser, while its Poison typing and naturally useful special bulk help it remain active against the other attacks. Use a physical move such as Crunch, Knock Off or Poison Jab when available, and keep its HP high enough to survive an unexpected Smart Strike or Dragon Pulse.
A bulky Steel type can repeatedly create safer switch opportunities because it resists every move in the listed moveset. Attack physically if possible, since many physical Steel, Dark, Bug, Ghost, Ice or Fairy moves can exploit Ultra Necrozma’s weaknesses without depending on a weaker special stat. Check the individual Pokémon’s secondary typing before committing to it as your main answer.
Mimikyu can provide one dependable opening through Disguise. Use that free action to attack, apply a support move or switch to a better counter. Do not treat Mimikyu as a complete solution: Smart Strike is super-effective, and Disguise only absorbs one damaging hit.
Sturdy or Focus Sash can guarantee one action for a lower-level Pokémon. That action can be used for a strong attack, Toxic, Endeavor, paralysis, screens or another support option. This is an emergency plan, not a reason to spend several turns setting up while Ultra Necrozma attacks freely.
- Use Alolan Muk, a sturdy Steel type, Mimikyu or another prepared counter.
- Prefer physical super-effective attacks when practical.
- Keep a second answer available.
- Treat Disguise, Sturdy and Focus Sash as one-action tools.
Make the opening turn count
Lead with the Pokémon most likely to survive the first attack. If it has a strong super-effective physical move, attack immediately instead of spending multiple turns boosting. Ultra Necrozma’s boosted damage makes extended setup unreliable unless your Pokémon has already shown that it can survive repeated hits.
A physical Z-Move can remove a substantial portion of the boss’s health and is often the best use of Z-Power here. Use it from a Pokémon that can survive the likely response. A weak neutral Z-Move is less valuable than a regular super-effective attack from a durable Pokémon, so choose the action based on both damage and survival.
Use Toxic, paralysis, screens or another support move only when the active Pokémon can survive the next attack. If your lead cannot damage Ultra Necrozma or withstand another hit, switch to a planned resistance or allow a weakened Pokémon to take one final attack so that your main counter enters safely.
- Attack immediately when a reliable damaging move is available.
- Use Z-Power from a Pokémon that can survive the response.
- Apply support moves only when the next turn is survivable.
- Make planned switches rather than random replacements.
Heal and use sacrifices deliberately
Healing items work normally, but every healing turn gives Ultra Necrozma another chance to attack. Heal when the active Pokémon can survive the next move or when the boss has been slowed, paralyzed or reduced to a manageable range. If the active Pokémon cannot survive another hit and cannot finish the fight, repeatedly healing it may waste resources.
A weakened team member can absorb one final attack and give your main counter a safe entry. After the switch, attack immediately if the counter has a reliable super-effective move. Preserve at least one durable attacker rather than spending the whole battle reviving every teammate.
Priority moves such as Sucker Punch, Shadow Sneak or Aqua Jet are useful for finishing Ultra Necrozma after it has been weakened. Do not depend on priority to win from full health; the boss’s boosted stats and bulk make an incomplete priority strategy unreliable.
- Heal only when the active Pokémon can survive the response.
- Use a controlled sacrifice when it creates a safe switch.
- Reserve priority for a confirmed finishing range.
- Preserve one reliable counter.
Retry after a loss
If the party is defeated, use the normal Pokémon loss recovery, then heal and restock at the last available Pokémon Center. Change the opening strategy before trying again. If your Pokémon repeatedly faint before acting, raise the level of your bulky counter, improve its physical damage, add a Dark or Steel answer, or use a guaranteed-survival method such as Disguise, Sturdy or Focus Sash.
A save made before the summit allows a soft reset and a fresh attempt from that point. On the Nintendo 3DS Pokémon games, press L, R and Start together to return to the title screen. This only restores the saved position; it does not make Ultra Necrozma catchable or alter the story encounter.
After Ultra Necrozma faints, complete the forced dialogue and story scenes that follow. This chapter does not move those events into a new post-Champion sequence: they belong to the pre-League Ultra Megalopolis climax. Continue to the next unfinished objective in your existing progression.
- Recover at a Pokémon Center after a defeat.
- Change the plan before retrying.
- Use the pre-battle save for soft resets if desired.
- Finish the post-battle story scenes.
Continue with Mina’s Trial only if it remains incomplete
If Mina’s Trial has not yet been completed, go to Mina’s house in Seafolk Village. Defeat Mina first to receive the Pink Petal. Then collect the remaining petals in the prompted order: Ilima in Hau’oli Cemetery, Lana in Lush Jungle, Kiawe at Wela Volcano Park, Sophocles at the Hokulani Observatory and Nanu inside Aether House. In Ultra Moon, Lana is the captain battled in Lush Jungle, and Nanu battles the player for the final petal instead of simply handing it over.
Return to Mina after collecting the petals. Her Rainbow Flower summons Totem Ribombee. Defeat it and receive the Fairium Z. Heal before the later battles, especially before Nanu and the Totem encounter, because the captain route does not function as one continuous fully healed gauntlet.
- Start Mina’s Trial in Seafolk Village.
- Defeat Mina and collect all petals.
- Battle Lana in Lush Jungle and Nanu at Aether House.
- Defeat Totem Ribombee.
- Obtain Fairium Z.
Complete Hapu’s Grand Trial and reach Mount Lanakila
After Mina’s Trial, speak with Hapu and travel from Seafolk Village to Exeggutor Island using the Magikarp boat. Interact with the large Exeggutor to reach Hapu, then begin the Grand Trial when ready. Hapu’s team is Ground-focused: Golurk and Gastrodon are level 53, Flygon is level 53 and Mudsdale is level 54. Water- and Grass-type attacks are useful, but remember that Golurk is also Ghost type and Flygon is immune to Ground attacks.
Bring a plan for Mudsdale’s physical durability and its Groundium Z. A strong special Water or Grass attacker is often safer than relying only on physical damage. After winning, Hapu awards Groundium Z. Heal in Seafolk Village, fly to Tapu Village on Ula’ula and take the northern route to Mount Lanakila.
During the first visit to Mount Lanakila, Necrozma is waiting in the crater as a level 65 catchable encounter. Save before interacting with it if you want to attempt a specific capture. This is a separate encounter from the forced level 60 Ultra Necrozma battle in Megalo Tower.
- Travel to Exeggutor Island after Mina’s Trial.
- Defeat Hapu’s level 53-54 Ground team.
- Obtain Groundium Z.
- Fly to Tapu Village and enter Mount Lanakila.
- Save before the level 65 Necrozma encounter if you plan to catch it.
Before you move on
- Ultra Necrozma has fainted at the top of Megalo Tower.
- The pre-League Ultra Megalopolis story scenes have been completed.
- If Mina’s Trial was unfinished, Mina’s Trial is now complete and Totem Ribombee has been defeated.
- If Hapu’s Grand Trial was unfinished, Hapu has been defeated on Exeggutor Island and Groundium Z has been obtained.
- The route from Tapu Village to Mount Lanakila is open.
- The level 65 Necrozma encounter on Mount Lanakila has been reached, postponed or completed.
- The player is ready to proceed toward the Pokémon League rather than treating Ultra Necrozma as a post-Champion objective.
Post-Battle: Capturing, Receiving and Using Necrozma
In Pokémon Ultra Moon, the Dawn Wings Necrozma and Ultra Necrozma battles in Ultra Megalopolis are mandatory story fights and cannot be captured. After those battles, a weakened ordinary-form Necrozma appears in a crater on Mount Lanakila during the first climb toward the Pokémon League. This level 65 Necrozma is the game’s genuine capture opportunity. After it is caught, Colress provides the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer, while the encounter supplies an Ultranecrozium Z. Those items let you fuse Necrozma with Lunala into Dawn Wings Necrozma and activate Ultra Burst later.
Treat the Ultra Megalopolis battles as forced story encounters
The story battle at the Altar of the Moone begins after Necrozma takes control of Nebby, your Lunala, and becomes Dawn Wings Necrozma. The subsequent battle at the top of Megalo Tower is against Ultra Necrozma. Neither form has a capture phase. The game uses these encounters to advance the plot, so Poké Balls cannot be used to obtain either fused story form.
Ultra Necrozma is level 60 and uses Photon Geyser, Smart Strike, Power Gem, and Dragon Pulse. Bring a team member that can survive its Psychic, Steel, Rock, and Dragon coverage, and use a strong physical attacker if your special attackers are being overwhelmed. A Dark-type Pokémon can avoid Photon Geyser, but do not rely on that alone because Smart Strike and Dragon Pulse provide coverage. A Focus Sash, sturdy defensive Pokémon, priority attack, or a prepared Z-Move can give a weaker team a way to finish the fight.
If you lose, heal and change your lead or battle plan before retrying from the available story recovery point. Save before beginning the Ultra Megalopolis sequence if you want a clean attempt, but resetting will not turn either story form into a catchable Pokémon. After the victory, continue the remaining story instead of stopping as though the League or the game has ended.
- Defeat Dawn Wings Necrozma at the Altar of the Moone.
- Defeat Ultra Necrozma at Megalo Tower.
- Do not attempt to use Poké Balls during either story battle.
- Continue until the story returns you to the route toward the Pokémon League.
Reach the Mount Lanakila crater encounter
During your first ascent of Mount Lanakila toward the Pokémon League, follow the mountain route until you reach the large crater area. Necrozma is standing in the crater rather than appearing as a normal wild encounter. This is a separate ordinary-form Necrozma, not the Dawn Wings or Ultra Necrozma fought in Ultra Megalopolis.
Heal at the Pokémon Center before approaching the crater and save directly before interacting with Necrozma. When the game asks whether you will share some light from your Z-Ring, accept. The battle then begins against Necrozma at level 65. It has Prism Armor and the moves Photon Geyser, Iron Defense, Power Gem, and Night Slash. It is coded not to appear Shiny in Ultra Moon.
Lower its HP carefully and apply sleep or paralysis if you have a reliable status move. False Swipe is useful, but avoid poison, burn, recoil, or other continuing damage that could knock Necrozma out between turns. Use Ultra Balls as your general option; Dusk Balls are appropriate when their night or cave conditions apply. Necrozma has a much more favorable catch situation here than the ordinary Necrozma encounter in the original Pokémon Sun and Moon, but you should still save first because this is a one-time capture opportunity during the current story visit.
If you defeat or flee from the Mount Lanakila Necrozma, it is not permanently lost. It respawns after you defend your Champion title, allowing another attempt later. That is a post-Champion recovery condition, not an immediate repeat encounter during the same climb.
- Reach the crater on Mount Lanakila before entering the League.
- Save before speaking to Necrozma.
- Accept the Z-Ring light prompt.
- Capture the level 65 ordinary-form Necrozma.
- If it is defeated or fled from, return after defending your Champion title.
Receive the Ultranecrozium Z and Colress’s fusion devices
After the Mount Lanakila Necrozma encounter is caught, the Pokémon leaves behind an Ultranecrozium Z for your Bag. The caught Necrozma initially holds an Ultranecrozium Z as part of the encounter data, and the item becomes available for your own use after the encounter is resolved. This is the item required for Ultra Burst.
Colress then appears in the crater and gives you the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer. These are Key Items that fuse or separate Necrozma and the appropriate Legendary Pokémon. In Ultra Moon, use the N-Lunarizer for Necrozma and Lunala. The N-Solarizer is the corresponding device for Solgaleo, primarily relevant to the other paired version.
The fusion devices do not give you another Lunala. You must use the Lunala obtained during the story or another compatible Lunala that you own. Keep Necrozma and Lunala accessible in your party or Boxes before attempting the fusion, and confirm that the game has room to return both Pokémon when you later separate them.
- Resolve the Mount Lanakila encounter by catching Necrozma.
- Confirm that the Ultranecrozium Z is in your Bag or available from the encounter.
- Speak with Colress in the crater.
- Receive both the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer.
- Keep Lunala available if you want Dawn Wings Necrozma.
Fuse Necrozma with Lunala and use Ultra Burst
Place Necrozma and Lunala in the party, open the Bag, and use the N-Lunarizer. Select Necrozma and Lunala when prompted. Necrozma becomes Dawn Wings Necrozma, while Lunala is incorporated into the fused Pokémon. Use the N-Lunarizer again when you want to separate them. Fusion is a reversible form change, not an evolution that creates a new independent Pokémon.
For Ultra Burst, make sure Dawn Wings Necrozma is holding the Ultranecrozium Z. Enter a battle and select the Ultra Burst command from the move-selection screen. Necrozma changes into Ultra Necrozma for that battle and gains its Ultra form and Neuroforce ability. Ultra Burst can be activated only once per battle. The form reverts when the battle ends, and it does not create a separate Ultra Necrozma entry in the PC.
After at least one turn has passed since Ultra Burst, Ultra Necrozma can use Light That Burns the Sky if it knows Photon Geyser. The Z-Move replaces Photon Geyser for that use, so do not forget the move if you specifically want to use the signature attack. If Photon Geyser has been removed, use a Move Reminder before attempting the combination.
- Use the N-Lunarizer on Necrozma and Lunala.
- Equip the Ultranecrozium Z to Dawn Wings Necrozma.
- Activate Ultra Burst from the battle command menu.
- Keep Photon Geyser if you want Light That Burns the Sky.
- Remember that Ultra Necrozma reverts after battle.
Separate the fusion before trading or depositing it
Dawn Wings Necrozma cannot be traded, released, or deposited in Pokémon Bank while it remains fused. If you want to trade or store the Pokémon, use the N-Lunarizer on Dawn Wings Necrozma first. The game returns Necrozma and Lunala as separate Pokémon, after which they can be handled under the normal Generation VII rules.
The same fused-form restriction applies to Dusk Mane Necrozma. Check the party or Box afterward and confirm that both individual Pokémon are present before beginning a trade or Bank transfer. A fused form should never be left selected when you are preparing a transfer.
Pokémon Ultra Moon also has compatibility restrictions with the original Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Photon Geyser does not exist in those games, so a Necrozma that knows Photon Geyser cannot be traded into them or withdrawn into them from Pokémon Bank. Have Necrozma forget Photon Geyser at the Move Deleter before attempting that cross-version move. This restriction is separate from the fused-form restriction.
Pokémon Bank does not preserve held items as part of a deposited Pokémon transfer. Separate the fusion first, then check your Bag for the Ultranecrozium Z and other relevant items before depositing the individual Pokémon.
- Separate Dawn Wings Necrozma before trading, releasing, or using Pokémon Bank.
- Verify that Necrozma and Lunala are separate Pokémon.
- Remove Photon Geyser before moving Necrozma to original Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon.
- Check the Bag after any transfer preparation to confirm your Z-Crystal is still available.
Before you move on
- The forced Dawn Wings Necrozma battle is complete.
- The forced Ultra Necrozma battle is complete.
- A level 65 ordinary-form Necrozma has been captured in the Mount Lanakila crater.
- The Ultranecrozium Z is available in the Bag or was obtained after resolving the encounter.
- Colress has provided the N-Solarizer and N-Lunarizer.
- Necrozma and Lunala have been fused into Dawn Wings Necrozma at least once.
- Ultra Burst has been activated in battle if that feature is part of the goal.
- The fusion has been separated successfully before any intended trade or Pokémon Bank deposit.
- Photon Geyser has been removed before any transfer to original Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon.
Zygarde 50% and 100% — Reassembly and Resolution Cave Route
Pokémon Ultra Moon replaces the original Sun and Moon field-collection quest with a post-game sequence involving two Zygarde Pokémon. First, catch the level 60 50% Forme Zygarde in Resolution Cave on Poni Island. Then visit the Aether Base on Route 16, defeat Dexio, receive his level 63 10% Forme Zygarde, and accept the Zygarde Cube from Sina. The Cube begins with 40 stored Cells and Cores. Separate the gifted 10% Zygarde to add its 10 pieces, then use the resulting 50 stored pieces with the cave-caught Zygarde. The selected 50% Zygarde gains Power Construct and can transform into Complete Forme during battle.
Become Champion and unlock the Resolution Cave event
Complete the Alola Pokémon League and become Champion. The Resolution Cave Zygarde event is post-game content in Pokémon Ultra Moon; it is not available during the ordinary island challenge. After the Champion sequence returns control to you, travel to Poni Island and head toward Poni Plains.
From Poni Plains, take the sloped path at the northwest side of the area into Poni Meadow. Resolution Cave is reached from Poni Meadow. You do not need to collect Zygarde Cells or Cores in the overworld for this version. That extensive field-collection route belongs to Pokémon Sun and Moon, not Ultra Moon.
Heal before entering the area. The encounter is appropriate for a post-League team, so bring a Pokémon that can inflict sleep or paralysis, a controlled damaging move, recovery items, and a large supply of Poké Balls. Save before beginning the encounter sequence.
- Become Champion.
- Reach Poni Plains after the League.
- Enter Poni Meadow with a prepared and healed party.
Reach the bottom of Resolution Cave and catch Zygarde
Follow Poni Meadow to the Resolution Cave entrance, then proceed through the cave until you reach its lower chamber. Use the available Poké Ride actions when a rock or terrain obstacle blocks the route, and continue downward rather than leaving after collecting surface items. The encounter chamber is at the bottom of the cave.
Zygarde appears as a level 60 50% Forme encounter. Save immediately before interacting with it. Its listed ability at this stage is Aura Break, so it cannot transform into Complete Forme during this battle. Reduce its HP carefully, apply sleep or paralysis, and avoid attacks with recoil or a high chance of an accidental critical-hit knockout.
If Zygarde is knocked out or your supply of usable Poké Balls runs out, reload the save made before the encounter. Once it is caught, leave the cave and travel to Route 16 on Ula'ula Island.
- Reach the lowest chamber of Resolution Cave.
- Save before interacting with Zygarde.
- Catch the level 60 50% Forme Zygarde.
- Keep the captured Zygarde if you want to preserve that individual Pokémon.
Visit the Route 16 Aether Base and defeat Dexio
On Route 16, enter the Aether Base trailer located near the Route 16 Pokémon Center. Dexio and Sina appear there after the Resolution Cave Zygarde has been caught. Heal at the Pokémon Center before speaking to them, because Dexio immediately challenges you to a battle.
Dexio’s team is level 63, including a 10% Forme Zygarde. Use a balanced team rather than relying on one attacker. Ice-, Fairy-, and Dragon-type attacks can help against Zygarde, while a strong Dark- or Ghost-type attack is useful against parts of Dexio’s team. The exact matchup depends on your party, so prioritize reliable damage and avoid allowing his faster Pokémon to accumulate momentum.
After you defeat Dexio, he gives you the level 63 10% Forme Zygarde used in the battle. Sina then gives you the Zygarde Cube, which already contains 40 Cells and Cores. The Cube is not given by Dexio.
- Enter the Aether Base on Route 16 after catching the cave Zygarde.
- Defeat Dexio’s level 63 team.
- Receive Dexio’s level 63 10% Forme Zygarde.
- Receive the Zygarde Cube from Sina.
Separate the gifted 10% Zygarde
Use the Reassembly Unit inside the Route 16 Aether Base. Choose Separation and select the gifted 10% Forme Zygarde. Separation consumes that assembled Pokémon and transfers its 10 Cells and Cores into the Zygarde Cube. The Cube therefore rises from 40 stored pieces to 50.
This is the safest order if you want to keep the individual Zygarde caught in Resolution Cave. Separating a Pokémon is effectively permanent: the separated Zygarde is lost, along with its moves and other individual data. Do not select the cave-caught Zygarde unless you deliberately want to discard it and use the gifted Zygarde as your eventual Power Construct Pokémon.
The Reassembly Unit cannot separate a Zygarde that already has Power Construct. Perform the separation before any Power Construct assembly.
- Open the Reassembly Unit.
- Choose Separation.
- Select the gifted level 63 10% Zygarde.
- Confirm that the Cube contains 50 stored Cells and Cores.
Assemble Power Construct on the cave-caught Zygarde
With 50 pieces in the Cube, choose Assembly and select the level 60 50% Forme Zygarde caught in Resolution Cave. The machine uses the stored pieces to complete the remaining half of its construction. The selected Zygarde remains the same individual Pokémon, but its ability changes from Aura Break to Power Construct.
The result is still displayed as 50% Forme Zygarde while it is stored or outside battle. The Reassembly Unit does not create a permanently stored 100% or Complete Forme. Check the Pokémon’s summary after assembly and verify that the ability is Power Construct.
If you select the gifted 10% Zygarde instead, you can produce a Power Construct Zygarde while sacrificing the cave-caught one. That alternative is functional, but separating the gifted 10% Zygarde preserves the unique cave capture and is the recommended route.
- Choose Assembly at the Reassembly Unit.
- Select the cave-caught 50% Forme Zygarde.
- Use the 50 stored Cells and Cores.
- Confirm that the ability is Power Construct.
Trigger Complete Forme in battle
Power Construct activates only in battle. When a 10% or 50% Forme Zygarde with Power Construct has HP at half or below at the end of the turn, it changes into Complete Forme. The transformation is temporary and is not a separate Pokémon that can be deposited, traded, or kept permanently in Complete Forme.
To verify the ability, enter a battle where you can control the damage, allow Zygarde’s HP to fall to half or below, and let the turn conclude. Complete Forme then appears with its expanded battle statistics. Heal afterward if necessary. At the end of the battle, the Pokémon returns to its ordinary stored form rather than remaining as a permanent Complete Forme.
A Zygarde with Aura Break cannot activate Power Construct. If you want to avoid the transformation during ordinary battles, keep its HP above half or use an Aura Break Zygarde instead.
- Confirm Power Construct in the summary screen.
- Lower Zygarde to half HP or less during battle.
- Allow the turn to end.
- Confirm the change to Complete Forme.
- Finish or leave the battle and verify that Zygarde is no longer permanently stored in Complete Forme.
Before you move on
- The level 60 50% Forme Zygarde has been caught in the lowest chamber of Resolution Cave.
- Dexio and Sina have appeared at the Route 16 Aether Base after the capture.
- Dexio has been defeated in battle.
- Dexio has given you the level 63 10% Forme Zygarde.
- Sina has given you the Zygarde Cube containing 40 stored Cells and Cores.
- The gifted 10% Zygarde has been separated, raising the Cube total to 50 stored pieces.
- The cave-caught 50% Forme Zygarde has been assembled with those 50 pieces.
- Its ability is now Power Construct.
- During a battle, reducing that Zygarde to half HP or below and ending the turn causes Complete Forme to activate.
- After battle, the Pokémon returns to its ordinary stored form rather than remaining permanently in Complete Forme.
Battle Tree, Super Battles and Competitive Post-Game Goals
After becoming Alola Champion, cross Poni Grove, Poni Plains, Poni Coast and Poni Gauntlet to reach the Battle Tree. Defeat either Red or Blue at the entrance to gain access, then complete Normal courses to unlock their corresponding Super courses. Ultra Moon treats Normal and Super courses differently: Normal courses allow the player's actual levels and special Pokémon, while Super courses use stricter registration rules, including level-50 eligibility and bans on special Pokémon. Use the facility to earn BP, receive streak rewards, collect Mega Stones and ribbons, and build toward a battle-50 Super victory.
Reach the Battle Tree and defeat the entrance opponent
After becoming Champion of Alola, return to Poni Island and travel through Poni Grove, Poni Plains, Poni Coast and Poni Gauntlet. Poni Gauntlet is the final route before the Battle Tree, so heal at the nearest Pokémon Center and restore your important moves before entering. The path contains wild Pokémon, items and trainers, but no additional trial is required to reach the facility.
At the Battle Tree entrance, Red and Blue stop you and ask you to choose one of them. Defeat the trainer you select to open the facility. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Blue heals your party before this introductory battle, so choosing Blue gives you a guaranteed pre-battle recovery; choose Red instead if you want to face his higher-level team for practice. This entrance fight is separate from the later Normal and Super courses.
After the battle, speak with the attendants inside. You can select Single, Double or Multi Battles. A Single team uses three Pokémon, a Double team uses four, and a Multi team uses two Pokémon for each trainer. Multi Battles can use a local human partner or a recruited computer-controlled partner. Scouting a computer-controlled partner costs BP, so do not spend BP on scouting until you know which partner's available Pokémon fit your plan.
- Become Champion of Alola.
- Cross Poni Grove, Poni Plains, Poni Coast and Poni Gauntlet.
- Defeat either Red or Blue at the Battle Tree entrance.
- Confirm that the Single, Double and Multi counters are available.
- Keep the entrance battle separate from the later Normal-course progression.
Register teams under the correct Ultra Moon rules
Normal courses in Ultra Moon do not impose a player level cap and do not impose the special-Pokémon restriction. Your Pokémon keep their actual levels, while the facility's opposing teams use fixed battle sets. This makes Normal Singles a practical place to earn the first ribbon or accumulate initial BP with a strong story or post-game team. Duplicate species and duplicate held items are still not permitted.
Super courses use the stricter registration rules. The selected Pokémon must meet the course's level-50 eligibility requirement, special Pokémon are banned, and you cannot register duplicate species or duplicate held items. Check the registration screen every time rather than assuming a team accepted in Normal mode will also be accepted in Super mode. Eggs cannot be used, and the special-Pokémon ban includes major legendary and mythical species such as Lunala, Necrozma, Mewtwo, Rayquaza and Zygarde.
The facility has no ordinary Bag-item use during battles, so give each Pokémon its held item before registration. A useful Singles structure is a lead that can attack immediately or create a safe setup turn, a reliable switch-in, and a cleaner or priority user. For Doubles, plan around Protect, speed control, Intimidate, Fake Out, redirection or spread attacks. Multi is less predictable because your computer partner chooses actions independently; scout a partner whose available Pokémon cover your team's weaknesses instead of expecting it to follow a custom strategy.
- Use Normal mode to train or test a team without the Super restrictions.
- For Super mode, prepare Pokémon eligible for the level-50 rules.
- Do not register duplicate species or duplicate held items.
- Do not bring eggs or special Pokémon into Super mode.
- Set held items before starting the streak.
- Use Singles for the clearest first attempt; build separate Doubles and Multi plans.
Unlock Super courses and earn the ribbons
Each Normal course contains 20 consecutive battles. The twentieth battle is against the format's Battle Legend: Red in Singles, Blue in Doubles, and both Red and Blue in Multi. Completing the Normal course unlocks the corresponding Super course. The Super course is an open-ended streak that ends when you lose, and its Battle Legend appears again on battle 50.
Defeating the Normal Battle Legend awards the Battle Tree Great Ribbon to the Pokémon used in that battle. Defeating the Battle Legend on Super battle 50 awards the Battle Tree Master Ribbon to the Pokémon used. Red uses three Pokémon in Singles, Blue uses four in Doubles, and both Battle Legends appear in Multi with two Pokémon each.
Normal-course BP rises through the streak and the Battle Legend victory awards 20 BP. Super battles award more BP as the streak advances, with the battle-50 Battle Legend awarding 50 BP. If you are pursuing the Master Ribbon, use a purpose-built Super roster rather than treating the first 20 battles as an extension of the story team.
- Win 20 Normal Singles battles to unlock Super Singles.
- Win 20 Normal Doubles battles to unlock Super Doubles.
- Win 20 Normal Multi battles to unlock Super Multi.
- Defeat Red, Blue or both at the appropriate Normal-course milestone.
- Reach Super battle 50 and defeat the relevant Battle Legend for the Master Ribbon.
Build for streak survival and manage BP
For Singles, cover status, opposing setup, Focus Sash, priority and disruptive moves such as Trick. A setup sweeper should have a safe route onto the field and at least one teammate that can handle an unfavorable matchup. Do not use three Pokémon sharing the same weakness or relying on the same setup turn.
For Doubles, decide your first-turn target before registering. Protect can shield a partner while the other Pokémon attacks or establishes speed control. Intimidate, Fake Out, redirection and spread attacks can prevent an early collapse, but each team still needs a way to deal with opposing weather, status and priority.
The Battle Tree restores the battle party between completed matches, but you still need to track move PP, one-use effects and matchup information. If the team is running low on PP or has entered a dangerous sequence of unfavorable pairings, finish the current battle and end the challenge after the victory rather than gambling the entire streak. A loss resets the current streak, though previously completed rewards and the facility's best-progress goals remain available.
Spend early BP on the held item, tutor service or Mega Stone that completes your chosen roster. The Battle Tree shops sell competitive held items, evolution items and Mega Stones, with many Mega Stones listed at 64 BP. In Ultra Moon, the four Kanto starter Mega Stones are not ordinary shop purchases: after defeating Red or Blue in a Battle Tree challenge, speak with Red near the entrance to receive Venusaurite, Blastoisinite, Charizardite X and Charizardite Y. This is distinct from the introductory entrance battle, so return to Red after completing a Battle Tree challenge if the stones have not yet been awarded.
- Give each Pokémon a defined offensive, defensive or support role.
- Include answers to status, setup, priority and disruptive strategies.
- Use Protect or comparable defensive tools in Doubles when appropriate.
- Spend BP first on team-defining items or services.
- After defeating Red or Blue in a Battle Tree challenge, speak with Red for the four Kanto starter Mega Stones.
Collect streak rewards and confirm completion
After completing a streak, return to the receptionist on a later day to claim the reward for the highest qualifying completed streak. The verified Ultra Moon sequence is Moomoo Milk at five wins, PP Up at 10, Rare Candy at 20, Bottle Cap at 30, PP Max at 40, Ability Capsule at 50, Lansat Berry at 100 and Starf Berry at 200. These receptionist rewards are separate from BP, ribbons and the Kanto starter Mega Stones.
For the chapter's main competitive goal, complete at least one Normal course, confirm that its matching Super course is available, and then reach battle 50 in that Super course. Save the Master Ribbon on the Pokémon that participated in the successful battle-50 victory. If your goal is only access to BP and the Super format, you can stop after the Normal Battle Legend; if your goal includes the full ribbon target, continue to Super battle 50.
- Collect the appropriate receptionist reward after returning on a later day.
- Complete at least one Normal course through battle 20.
- Confirm that the matching Super course is unlocked.
- Use a legal Super roster that passes registration.
- Defeat the Battle Legend on Super battle 50 for the Battle Tree Master Ribbon.
- Speak with Red after the required Battle Tree challenge if the Kanto starter Mega Stones are part of your target.
Before you move on
- The Battle Tree is accessible after the Poni Gauntlet entrance battle.
- At least one Normal course has been completed through battle 20.
- The corresponding Super course is available.
- The chosen Super team passes the registration screen without special Pokémon, duplicate species or duplicate held items.
- The relevant receptionist streak rewards have been collected after returning on a later day.
- A Super streak has reached battle 50 and its Battle Legend has been defeated if the full chapter goal is required.
- The Battle Tree Master Ribbon has been awarded to the Pokémon used in the successful Super battle-50 victory if the ribbon goal is required.
- Red has been spoken to after defeating Red or Blue in a Battle Tree challenge if the Kanto starter Mega Stones are required.
Team Rainbow Rocket and Late Legendary Hunts
After becoming Champion, complete Episode RR by following Sophocles from your home to the hacked Festival Plaza, defeating the Battle Agency Grunt with rental Pokémon, and infiltrating Team Rainbow Rocket’s Castle at Aether Paradise. Then use repeatable Ultra Warp Ride access to hunt Ultra Beasts and Legendary Pokémon, complete the expanded Alola Pokédex, claim the Shiny Charm and Oval Charm, and pursue Battle Tree, Mantine Surf, move-tutor, and version-exclusive goals.
1. Begin Episode RR without repeating earlier post-Champion content
Episode RR requires your first Alola Champion victory. It also requires the post-Champion Poni Grove investigation to be finished. In Ultra Moon, that investigation concerns the two Stakataka encounters. If you already completed that sequence in the preceding chapter, do not return to Poni Grove or repeat the encounters. If it remains unfinished, resolve both Stakataka encounters first by catching or defeating them, then return home.
From your house on Melemele Island, leave and re-enter if necessary. Sophocles arrives and asks for help with Festival Plaza. Follow him there. Team Rainbow Rocket has blocked the plaza’s normal functions, including access to your regular party. Speak with the grunts, then talk to Sophocles and the Battle Agency receptionist. Choose Challenge and use the three rental Pokémon supplied by the Battle Agency to defeat the Team Rainbow Rocket Grunt.
When the rental battle ends, Sophocles restores Festival Plaza and gives you an Eject Button. Watch the following television scene at home. Lillie then heads to Aether Paradise. Follow her there immediately; this is the start of the castle portion of Episode RR.
- Become Champion for the first time.
- Confirm that the Poni Grove Stakataka prerequisite is already complete.
- Speak with Sophocles at home.
- Defeat the Festival Plaza Grunt using Battle Agency rentals.
- Follow Lillie to Aether Paradise.
2. Defeat Faba and establish the castle healing point
At Aether Paradise, enter the main building and proceed through the opening scene. Faba challenges you and Lillie to a Multi Battle. His three Pokémon are level 63: Claydol, Bruxish, and Hypno. Use Grass, Water, Dark, Bug, Electric, or Fairy attacks as appropriate. Claydol has Levitate, so ordinary Ground attacks do not affect it.
After Faba loses, enter the former Lusamine mansion, now converted into Team Rocket’s Castle. As you move back toward the entrance, Guzma joins you for a required Multi Battle against Team Rainbow Rocket Grunts. Defeat them, then explore the newly opened left and right wings.
Lillie remains in Lusamine’s room and heals the party whenever you speak to her. Use this room as your recovery checkpoint before each castle wing and before the final battles. Save outside the castle and carry Full Restores, Revives, status cures, and PP recovery if your team is close to level 63 or is relying on low-PP attacks.
- Defeat Faba with Lillie’s help.
- Defeat the Grunts with Guzma.
- Locate Lillie in Lusamine’s room.
- Heal and save before attempting the castle puzzles.
3. Clear Archie, Maxie, Cyrus, and Lysandre
Take the west wing and work through its warp-panel rooms until you reach Archie. Defeat his level 64 Mightyena, Crobat, Muk, and Sharpedo, followed by level 66 Kyogre. Electric and Grass attacks are valuable against Kyogre and Sharpedo, but prepare for Ice- and Poison-type coverage. Press the button behind Archie’s painting after the battle.
Return to the lobby and take the east wing. Activate the floor-panel switch and step on the panels in the order they light up. Grunt battles can interrupt the puzzle, forcing you to repeat the sequence. At the end, defeat Maxie’s level 64 Mightyena, Crobat, Weezing, and Camerupt, followed by level 66 Groudon. Water attacks are useful against most of his team, but Groudon’s Drought and Solar Beam make careless Water strategies unreliable. Press the button behind Maxie’s painting.
The upstairs routes now open. Take the left staircase and complete the moving-tile puzzle to reach Cyrus. In Ultra Moon, his final Pokémon is level 67 Palkia; the rest of his team is level 65 Houndoom, Honchkrow, Crobat, and Weavile. Fairy, Fighting, Ice, and strong neutral attacks cover much of this team. After winning, Cyrus gives you the Galactic Key. Use it on the locked panel in Lusamine’s room.
Take the right staircase for Lysandre’s Meowth-statue puzzle. Avoid the statues’ lines of sight or you will be returned to the room entrance. Choose either button at the end, defeat Lysandre, then press the other button to stop the Ultimate Weapon sequence. Ultra Moon Lysandre uses level 65 Mienshao, Pyroar, Honchkrow, and Mega Gyarados, followed by level 67 Yveltal. Fairy, Electric, Ice, and Rock attacks are useful, but protect fragile Pokémon from Yveltal’s Dark- and Flying-type moves.
- Defeat Archie and press the painting button.
- Defeat Maxie and press the painting button.
- Defeat Cyrus and use the Galactic Key.
- Complete the Meowth-statue puzzle.
- Defeat Lysandre and press both buttons.
4. Finish the castle with Ghetsis and Giovanni
Use the opened route in Lusamine’s room to enter the portal area. Ghetsis confronts you before you can continue. His Ultra Moon team is level 66 Cofagrigus, Bouffalant, Bisharp, and Hydreigon, followed by level 68 Reshiram. Prepare Fighting, Fairy, Ice, Dark, and Ground coverage, but do not rely on one attacker because Cofagrigus can burn physical attackers and Hydreigon has broad coverage. Ghetsis’s Pokémon cannot be caught.
After Colress sends Ghetsis back to his own world, speak with Lillie for a final heal. Save before entering the preservation room. Lusamine is unconscious inside, and Giovanni is waiting there. His level 68 team is Dugtrio, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, and Rhyperior, followed by level 70 Mewtwo holding Mewtwonite Y. Mewtwo Mega Evolves into Mega Mewtwo Y and knows Psystrike, Aura Sphere, Psychic, and Ice Beam.
Use Water or Grass attacks against the Ground-heavy portion of Giovanni’s team, while keeping a Dark- or Ghost-type answer for Mewtwo. Rhyperior can punish Electric strategies, and Nidoking and Nidoqueen carry different special coverage, so switch deliberately rather than attempting an automatic sweep. None of Giovanni’s Pokémon can be captured.
After Giovanni is defeated, Colress restores the mansion and Team Rainbow Rocket leaves. Episode RR is complete when Aether Paradise has returned to its normal appearance. You receive 55 Big Nuggets. The castle’s major progression cannot be repeated, so collect any desired items before leaving.
- Defeat Ghetsis and Reshiram.
- Heal with Lillie before Giovanni.
- Defeat Giovanni and Mega Mewtwo Y.
- Confirm that Aether Paradise has been restored.
- Collect the 55 Big Nuggets.
5. Use Ultra Warp Ride for Ultra Beasts
Ultra Warp Ride first appears during the main Necrozma storyline, when Ultra Moon uses the borrowed Solgaleo from the Ultra Recon Squad to reach Ultra Megalopolis. That first ride is a story sequence, not the repeatable late-game hunting setup. The repeatable entrance becomes available after Ultra Necrozma has been defeated and the Ultra Megalopolis events are complete.
Return to the Altar of the Moone and interact with the available Legendary Pokémon to enter Ultra Space. Later, the game allows you to choose whether to ride Solgaleo or Lunala. During a ride, collect energy orbs to increase speed and avoid electric obstacles that reduce momentum. Longer travel and higher-level wormholes improve access to rare destinations, but the exact destination remains dependent on the wormhole reached.
Ultra Moon’s white-wormhole Ultra Beasts include Nihilego, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela, and Guzzlord. Stakataka is not a white-wormhole encounter in this version; its two relevant encounters are in Poni Grove. Poipole is received through the story and can evolve into Naganadel after learning Dragon Pulse. Ultra Sun exclusives such as Buzzwole, Kartana, and Blacephalon require trading or another compatible game.
Save before a desired encounter if you want to preserve the capture attempt. Bring a Pokémon with False Swipe, a reliable sleep or paralysis move, and enough healing items. Beast Balls are particularly appropriate for Ultra Beasts, while ordinary Legendary encounters can be handled with status support and Ultra Balls or other suitable Poké Balls.
- Complete the first story ride to Ultra Megalopolis.
- Defeat Ultra Necrozma.
- Unlock repeatable access from the Altar of the Moone.
- Register Ultra Moon’s obtainable Ultra Beasts.
- Keep Stakataka separate from the wormhole hunt.
6. Hunt Ultra Moon’s Legendary Pokémon
Ultra Moon’s version-exclusive Ultra Warp Ride Legendary Pokémon include Lugia, Latias, Kyogre, Regigigas, Palkia, Thundurus, Zekrom, and Yveltal. Their destinations use different wormhole colors: Lugia, Latias, and Kyogre are blue-wormhole targets; Palkia and Regigigas are yellow-wormhole targets; Thundurus and Yveltal are red-wormhole targets; Zekrom is a green-wormhole target. Other Legendary Pokémon are available in both versions, while Ultra Sun exclusives such as Ho-Oh, Latios, Groudon, Dialga, Heatran, Tornadus, Reshiram, and Xerneas require trading for a complete collection.
Several encounters require specific Legendary partners in your party. Suicune requires both Raikou and Entei. Rayquaza requires Kyogre and Groudon. Giratina requires Dialga and Palkia. Landorus requires Tornadus and Thundurus. Kyurem requires Reshiram and Zekrom. If a partner is version-exclusive, trade for it before beginning the hunt; having the Pokémon registered in the Pokédex is not enough.
Before entering the desired wormhole, heal the party, put the capture Pokémon in the lead, and save. Legendary encounters are level 60, so avoid using a lead that can accidentally knock them out. If you reach the wrong destination, leave without saving if you want to preserve the previous hunt. Saving after entering an unwanted encounter removes the easiest reset point.
- Check version exclusivity before beginning a hunt.
- Bring all required partner Legendaries.
- Save before entering a desired encounter.
- Use status and False Swipe support.
- Trade for Ultra Sun exclusives and missing partners.
7. Complete the expanded Alola Pokédex and optional post-game rewards
Ultra Moon does not have a separate National Pokédex completion screen. The in-game completion reward is tied to the expanded Alola Pokédex. Register the required species through captures, evolutions, gifts, trades, wormhole encounters, and story rewards. Event-only Mythical Pokémon are not needed for the Shiny Charm. When the Alola Pokédex is complete, visit the Game Freak office in Heahea City and speak with the Game Director to receive the Shiny Charm.
Remain in the same Game Freak building and challenge Morimoto and Kazumasa Iwao in their post-game double battle. Defeat both trainers to receive the Oval Charm. This battle is optional and is separate from Pokédex completion, so it can be postponed until your team is prepared for a level-appropriate double battle.
For Battle Tree access, travel through Poni Gauntlet to the Battle Tree after becoming Champion. Normal formats provide the initial route to the Battle Legends: Red is associated with Singles and Blue with Doubles. Winning the required Normal Battle Tree streak unlocks the corresponding Super format. Use legal teams, held items, Z-Crystals, and Mega Stones, and preserve PP because consecutive battles do not function like ordinary trainer battles with a Pokémon Center after every fight.
Mantine Surf is available at Big Wave Beach, Heahea Beach, Ula’ula Beach, and Poni Beach. It awards Beach Points that can be spent with beach tutors. Complete the high-score challenge on all four courses and visit the Surfing Association office in Heahea City to receive the special level 40 Surfing Pikachu. Battle Tree tutors at Poni can also teach moves in exchange for Battle Points, while additional tutors are found at Big Wave Beach and Heahea Beach.
- Complete the expanded Alola Pokédex.
- Claim the Shiny Charm in Heahea City.
- Defeat Morimoto and Iwao for the Oval Charm.
- Reach the Battle Tree through Poni Gauntlet.
- Unlock Super formats through Normal Battle Tree progress.
- Complete all four Mantine Surf courses if pursuing Surfing Pikachu.
- Spend Beach Points and Battle Points on desired move tutors and competitive items.
Before you move on
- The first Champion victory is complete.
- The Poni Grove Stakataka prerequisite was completed once, without repeating it unnecessarily.
- Sophocles restored Festival Plaza after the Battle Agency rental battle.
- Faba, Archie, Maxie, Cyrus, Lysandre, Ghetsis, and Giovanni were defeated.
- Aether Paradise returned to its normal appearance and the 55 Big Nuggets were received.
- Repeatable Ultra Warp Ride access is available from the Altar of the Moone.
- Ultra Moon’s obtainable Ultra Beasts and desired Stakataka are registered.
- Version-exclusive Legendary targets and partner requirements have been checked.
- The expanded Alola Pokédex is complete and the Shiny Charm was claimed in Heahea City.
- Morimoto and Iwao were defeated for the Oval Charm if that optional goal was selected.
- Battle Tree, Super formats, Mantine Surf, move tutors, and version-exclusive trades were handled as desired.
