Resident Evil (PlayStation, North America, 1996) — Complete Campaign Walkthrough

A step-by-step walkthrough for the original North American PlayStation release of Resident Evil (1996). This guide covers both playable campaigns, the Spencer Mansion, the underground laboratory, major boss encounters, partner-survival conditions, all three MO Disks and pass-code processing, the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines, the three-code prison-access route, the conditional Master Key route for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell and applicable emergency-access doors, the post-completion Special Key, the post-Tyrant escape Battery, the final Tyrant and helicopter escape. It distinguishes the original release from Director's Cut, DualShock, Arrange-mode and remake routes.

Your goalComplete a full playthrough with either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine and reach that protagonist’s strongest original North American PlayStation ending: preserve the campaign partner, collect all three MO Disks, process them at the original-release Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines, enter the three resulting pass codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, defeat Tyrant-002, open the other playable character’s actual cell through the coded route, complete the partner-assisted emergency route when the partner survived, collect and install the post-Tyrant Battery beside the escape elevator, defeat the helipad Tyrant with Brad’s Rocket Launcher and escape by helicopter. On an applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key can instead open the actual cell and the required emergency-access doors; it remains distinct from the output machines, pass codes and Special Key. The post-completion Special Key remains a separate costume-closet reward.

CONTROLLER READY?

Before you begin

You are about to run the original Resident Evil on the North American PlayStation release (the 1996 Capcom release).

The game uses fixed camera angles, the classic ’tank’ control scheme (unless you are using a DualShock edition), limited inventory slots and an ink-ribbon/typewriter save system.

Expect frequent backtracking, deliberate inventory juggling, and scripted enemy encounters that punish overconfidence.

This walkthrough covers both playable characters (Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield), the Spencer Mansion and the underground facilities, shows where to find key items and safe rooms, explains how to manage ink ribbons and item boxes, details boss tactics for the original release, and gives clear, repeatable checkpoints so you can recover from mistakes without guessing what to do next.

Set yourself up for the run

Play the standard North American PlayStation original release from 1996, or an equivalent release that preserves its original item placement and fixed-camera presentation.

Director's Cut, DualShock, Arrange-mode and remake routes are excluded unless explicitly labeled.

Use a memory card with space for saves. Typewriters require Ink Ribbons, and each save consumes one ribbon. Save at meaningful milestones rather than after every ordinary room.

Jill has eight standard inventory slots and receives the Lockpick; Chris has six standard slots, uses Small Keys for several comparable locks and is more durable. Use item boxes to stage one objective at a time.

For the laboratory climax, keep these tasks distinct: collect all three MO Disks; process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines; enter the three generated pass codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door; defeat Tyrant-002; use the Master Key on the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell or the applicable emergency-access door when the non-assisted route supplies it; complete the partner-assisted emergency route when the partner survived; and complete the final escape.

The final escape Battery is obtained beside the escape elevator during the post-Tyrant escape route. Do not import the altered Power Room Battery placement from Director's Cut or Arrange-mode routes.

If a run fails, reload a meaningful safe-room save, reorganize the item box and retry with only the equipment needed for the failed objective.

Controls, Save System, Inventory and Character Differences

The original North American PlayStation release rewards deliberate movement, controlled retreats and careful inventory planning. Learn how the fixed camera and tank controls work, save only when progress justifies an Ink Ribbon, and stage equipment around Jill’s eight-slot or Chris’s six-slot inventory.

Learn the original PlayStation control layout

This chapter applies to the original 1996 North American PlayStation release, not Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, the DualShock edition or a later remake. The default controller uses the directional buttons to move your character relative to the direction they are facing. Up moves forward, Down moves backward, and Left or Right turns or changes movement direction according to the character’s current facing. A camera angle can change when you cross a doorway, but Up does not become movement toward the top of the screen.

The X button is the action button. Press it to examine objects, pick up items, open doors, talk to characters and confirm an attack after drawing a weapon. Hold Square and press Up to run forward. The original manual does not give you normal backward running, so do not depend on retreating at full speed while facing away from an enemy. R1 draws the equipped weapon. While holding R1, use the directional buttons to aim in relation to your character, then press X to fire.

Practice in a safe corridor before committing to the mansion’s first dangerous rooms. Turn in place until your character faces the direction you want to travel, then hold Square and move forward through the doorway. When an enemy is behind you, rotate to face the exit before attempting to run. This is more reliable than interpreting the fixed camera as a modern over-the-shoulder view.

  • Use the directional buttons relative to your character’s facing, not the camera image.
  • Hold Square with Up to run forward; do not expect normal backward running.
  • Hold R1 to draw a weapon, aim with the directional buttons and press X to fire.
  • Use X for examination, item pickup, doors, conversations and menu confirmation.

Face the threat, retreat while aligned and use doors deliberately

The important combat skill is not strafing. It is controlling your facing. When a zombie enters attack range, turn until the enemy is in front of your character, hold R1 and fire. If the shot connects and you still have space behind you, move backward or turn away only after creating room. If the enemy is closing too quickly, stop trying to correct your aim in the open and rotate toward the nearest doorway.

A dependable beginner pattern is to enter with the intended weapon equipped, identify the exit, turn to face the target, fire only while there is room to recover, and retreat through the door when the room becomes unsafe. Door transitions are useful defensive breaks because enemies do not pursue you through the loading transition. You do not need to kill every creature immediately. Clear enemies that block a frequently used corridor or narrow doorway; avoid or postpone enemies in rooms you will not revisit often.

When the camera changes during a retreat, stop pressing the movement direction briefly and reorient. Running while your character is facing a wall or the wrong corridor can turn a safe escape into a collision with an enemy. Against dogs and Hunters, reaching a door is usually more important than attempting one extra shot from a bad angle.

  • Enter dangerous rooms with a weapon equipped and a retreat route identified.
  • Turn to face the target before firing.
  • Back away or retreat only after your character is aligned with the escape route.
  • Leave through a door when the room becomes crowded or your aim is uncertain.
  • Reorient after every major fixed-camera transition.

Save at typewriters and conserve Ink Ribbons

Saving is performed at typewriters. In this PlayStation release, a save requires an Ink Ribbon, and each completed save consumes one ribbon. Typewriters are generally placed in safe rooms, often beside an item box, but check the machine and your ribbon supply before treating any room as a save point. Item boxes provide shared storage throughout the connected mansion, courtyard and laboratory routes, so spare ribbons can remain stored until you are ready to protect meaningful progress.

For a first playthrough, save after a substantial objective rather than after every ordinary room. Good milestones include finishing a major mansion wing, obtaining a key item after a dangerous route, returning safely from a new area, and preparing for a major boss or irreversible story sequence. If your supply permits, retain an earlier milestone save instead of overwriting it immediately after a risky decision. That gives you a recovery point if you take heavy damage, waste ammunition or enter a puzzle route with the wrong equipment.

Before saving, use the nearby item box. Deposit ammunition for weapons you are not taking, surplus healing items and key items belonging to another section. Do not spend an Ink Ribbon merely because a typewriter is nearby. Spend one when the save protects a meaningful objective or gives you a dependable restart before a demanding section.

  • Carry or retrieve an Ink Ribbon before relying on a typewriter.
  • Save at section milestones, major key-item acquisitions and boss preparations.
  • Keep an earlier milestone save when your supply allows it.
  • Store spare ribbons and unused equipment instead of carrying them through the mansion.
  • Use the item box before saving to prevent the next route from starting overburdened.

Use Jill’s eight slots and Lockpick efficiently

Jill Valentine has eight standard inventory slots. She also receives the Lockpick early from Barry. The Lockpick is a personal tool and does not consume one of Jill’s normal inventory spaces, allowing her to open many simple locks that require Small Keys in Chris’s scenario. It does not replace the mansion’s major story keys, so you still need to find and use the appropriate key items for locked progression doors.

Jill’s larger inventory makes it easier to combine a weapon, ammunition, healing item and several puzzle objects on one trip, but eight slots still fill quickly. Before entering an unexplored wing, reserve space for likely key items. A practical loadout is one primary weapon, its ammunition or a backup weapon, one healing item and only the objects required for the immediate objective. If you reach a new item while full, return to the nearest item box instead of discarding an item whose purpose is unclear.

The Lockpick reduces some key-fetching trips, but it does not justify carrying every optional reward at once. Keep it available, then stage the rest of Jill’s equipment around the next room or puzzle rather than the entire mansion.

  • Keep Jill’s Lockpick available throughout the campaign.
  • Leave several spaces open before entering an unfamiliar section.
  • Carry one main weapon and only the ammunition needed for the planned route.
  • Do not discard an unidentified key item just to make room.
  • Remember that major story locks still require their own keys or puzzle solutions.

Plan around Chris’s six slots and personal advantages

Chris Redfield has six standard inventory slots, two fewer than Jill. His scenario uses Small Keys for several simple locks that Jill can handle with the Lockpick, so Chris must spend inventory space on keys and make more deliberate returns to item boxes. Chris is also more durable than Jill in the original campaign, but that extra margin does not make careless combat safe.

Before a Chris objective, place the required Small Key, weapon ammunition and healing supply in the nearest safe room. Take only what the next room or puzzle requires, then return to the box before beginning another branch of exploration. Avoid carrying multiple unused weapons. A shotgun, handgun ammunition and a healing item can consume half of the available space before a puzzle item is collected.

Chris’s limited capacity changes the order of operations. Pick up the key item needed for the immediate route first, solve the nearby puzzle, and return to storage before taking optional ammunition or weapons. If you find a Small Key with no immediate use, store it rather than allowing it to displace healing or a required mansion key. Use Chris’s durability as a margin for error, not as a reason to trade damage for ammunition savings.

  • Stage Chris’s Small Keys and puzzle items near the section where they will be used.
  • Return to an item box when the six-slot limit begins forcing bad choices.
  • Keep at least one healing option before a long exploration trip.
  • Carry the next objective’s equipment, not every weapon and item available.
  • Use Chris’s greater durability to survive mistakes, not to justify unnecessary contact damage.

Before you move on

  • You can explain tank controls and move without becoming disoriented when a camera angle changes.
  • You know that Square runs forward, R1 draws the weapon, directional buttons aim while R1 is held, and X performs actions or attacks.
  • You can turn to face an enemy, fire while aligned, retreat toward a known doorway and recover after a camera transition.
  • You know that typewriters require Ink Ribbons and have chosen a sensible milestone for your first save.
  • You can state the character differences: Jill has eight standard slots and a personal Lockpick; Chris has six slots, uses Small Keys for some locks and is more durable.
  • Before leaving a safe-room area, your inventory contains only the equipment needed for the next objective, with at least one open slot and one recovery option.

First Hour — Main Hall, East and West Wings and Meeting Your Partner

The opening mansion loop establishes your character’s inventory, early storage point and partner-event conditions. Jill receives Barry Burton’s Lockpick and can preserve the intended early Barry rescue by taking the mounted Shotgun and waiting for the ceiling trap to trigger. Chris has six inventory slots, uses Small Keys rather than Jill’s Lockpick and meets Rebecca through a branch-sensitive early event. Both characters should collect the First Floor Map, reach the West Storeroom and leave with a compact loadout for the next mansion objectives. The later Plant 42 and Hunter consequences of Chris’s Rebecca setup are resolved in Chapters 06 and 07, not here.

Return to the Main Hall

After the opening briefing, control returns in the Dining Room. Follow the other members of the team toward the corridor where Kenneth J. Sullivan’s scene occurs. Once control returns, retreat through the Dining Room and go back to the Main Hall.

Use the Main Hall as your navigation reference. In the original North American PlayStation release, a typewriter is beside the stairs, so you can save there when necessary. The nearby West Storeroom is the more useful early staging point because it contains the item box as well as another typewriter.

The game uses fixed camera angles and tank-style movement. When a zombie or dog enters an awkward angle, retreat through a doorway rather than turning in place while the enemy closes in. Carry a weapon whenever you enter an uncleared corridor, but do not spend ammunition clearing every room if you can safely pass through it.

  • Trigger Kenneth’s scene.
  • Return to the Main Hall.
  • Locate the typewriter beside the stairs.
  • Use door transitions to escape unsafe camera angles.
  • Keep a weapon equipped when entering an unfamiliar corridor.

Collect the First Floor Map

From the Main Hall, enter the east-side Exhibition Room. Push the movable steps across the floor until they are positioned beside the central statue. Climb the steps and examine the bowl above the statue to collect the First Floor Map.

The map is not mandatory for completion, but it is strongly recommended for a first playthrough. It helps identify unexplored rooms, locked doors and the locations of later routes. Leave at least one inventory slot open after taking it, because the next rooms can provide ammunition, healing items or a required key item.

  • Enter the east-side Exhibition Room.
  • Push the steps beside the statue.
  • Take the First Floor Map from the bowl.
  • Leave an open inventory slot after collecting it.

Jill: receive the Lockpick

During Jill’s early Main Hall investigation, Barry gives her the Lockpick and identifies her as the team’s specialist for opening locks. Keep the Lockpick available. It replaces several Small Key uses and makes Jill’s early routing more flexible. Jill has eight standard inventory slots, but that extra space is not a reason to carry every herb, ammunition box and optional item at once.

After receiving the Lockpick, use it to open the appropriate early doors and reach the corridor where the Cerberus dogs break through the windows. Approach with a retreat route in mind. If a dog reaches an unsafe camera angle, move through a doorway instead of trying to fight while cornered.

Continue to the room containing the mounted Shotgun. For the intended early Barry checkpoint, take the Shotgun from the rack and then attempt to leave normally. The ceiling trap activates and Barry arrives to pull Jill out. Wait for this rescue rather than using the Broken Shotgun bypass if preserving Barry is the goal of this run.

This event is timing-sensitive. If the early route has been delayed or other Barry scenes have been activated first, he may not appear for the trap. If that happens, the Broken Shotgun route remains the practical way to obtain the Shotgun, but the early rescue checkpoint has not been preserved.

  • Trigger Barry’s early Main Hall scene.
  • Receive and retain the Lockpick.
  • Reach the window-dog corridor with a retreat path.
  • Take the mounted Shotgun.
  • Wait for Barry to rescue Jill from the ceiling trap.
  • Use the Broken Shotgun only if the Barry rescue does not activate or is intentionally skipped.

Jill: reach the West Storeroom

After Barry’s rescue, follow the west-side route toward the West Storeroom. This room contains an item box and typewriter and should become Jill’s primary early supply point. Store spare herbs, ammunition that is not needed immediately and extra Ink Ribbons before beginning a longer mansion loop.

Carry the Lockpick, a weapon, a modest amount of ammunition and one recovery item. Keep at least one empty slot for a key item or puzzle object. Jill can carry more than Chris, but unnecessary supplies still create extra trips when a required item appears.

Save at this point if you want a reliable first-hour milestone. Do not save after every short hallway unless you are practicing a dangerous section; Ink Ribbons are limited and are better reserved for meaningful route transitions, puzzles or boss attempts.

  • Reach the West Storeroom after Barry’s rescue.
  • Confirm the room has an item box and typewriter.
  • Store surplus supplies.
  • Keep the Lockpick available.
  • Carry one recovery item and leave an open slot.
  • Save here if this is your chosen first milestone.

Chris: meet Rebecca and collect the Sword Key

Chris follows a different opening route. He has six standard inventory slots and does not receive Jill’s Lockpick. Follow the west-side mansion route until you reach the medical area where Rebecca appears in the original release. After the conversation, examine the bed and collect the Sword Key.

The Sword Key is important because Chris uses it on several sword-emblem doors that Jill can often open with her Lockpick. Do not discard it while those doors remain relevant. Use the nearby item box to avoid filling Chris’s limited inventory with supplies that are not needed for the immediate route.

When the applicable Rebecca help prompt appears, choose Yes if you are setting up the intended V-JOLT-oriented branch. Choosing No establishes the intended direct-Plant-42 branch instead. This choice is only an early condition; it does not, by itself, guarantee every later Rebecca event.

The original release also allows Chris to encounter Rebecca through the Richard-related sequence instead of meeting her in the medical room first. If you reach Richard’s area before the medical-room meeting, pay attention to the scene that actually occurs. Rebecca’s availability later depends on the encounter order, Richard’s condition and how the Serum sequence is handled. Do not force a later scene simply because you selected Yes or No.

  • Reach Chris’s early medical-area route.
  • Meet Rebecca or activate the alternate Richard-related Rebecca scene.
  • Take the Sword Key from the bed when the medical-room event occurs.
  • Choose Yes for the intended V-JOLT-oriented setup or No for the intended direct route.
  • Treat the earlier Rebecca and Richard events as additional conditions.
  • Use the item box because Chris has only six standard slots.

Stage the next mansion route

Before leaving the early storage area, arrange a compact loadout. Jill should carry the Lockpick, a weapon, limited ammunition, one recovery item and room for a key item. Chris should carry the Sword Key while it remains useful, along with the same basic supplies.

Do not begin the deeper crest, library, Guardhouse or Plant 42 objectives from this chapter’s checklist. Those routes require additional keys and puzzle items that are collected later. For Chris, the consequences of the Rebecca setup are checked during the Guardhouse and mansion-return chapters: Chapter 06 handles the Plant 42 branch, and Chapter 07 handles the later rescue event that actually activates.

If a scene does not match the expected Rebecca or Richard route, record what occurred and continue according to the active event rather than restarting unnecessarily. The important first-hour goal is to preserve the information and inventory position needed for the later branch-specific instructions.

  • Jill is staged with the Lockpick.
  • Chris is staged with the Sword Key when required.
  • Each character has a weapon and one recovery item.
  • Each character has open inventory space.
  • The First Floor Map is collected.
  • Later Plant 42 and Hunter outcomes are deferred to Chapters 06 and 07.

Before you move on

  • The First Floor Map has been taken from the statue in the east-side Exhibition Room.
  • The Main Hall typewriter beside the stairs has been located.
  • The West Storeroom has been reached and used as the early item-box staging area.
  • Jill has received Barry’s Lockpick.
  • Jill has taken the mounted Shotgun and either received Barry’s ceiling-trap rescue or documented that the alternate Broken Shotgun route was required.
  • Chris has reached the early medical-area route or activated the alternate Richard-related Rebecca event.
  • Chris has taken the Sword Key from the original-release medical room when that event occurs.
  • Chris’s Yes or No branch choice has been recorded without treating it as the only Rebecca condition.
  • Both characters have a weapon, limited ammunition, one recovery item and open inventory space.
  • Plant 42 and the later Rebecca Hunter event remain unresolved here and are explicitly handed off to Chapters 06 and 07.

Dining Room and Library — First Puzzles and the Yawn Event

Complete the original North American PlayStation Dining Room, piano and emblem puzzles, then open the Attic and resolve the first Yawn encounter. The chapter ends with the Wind Crest and complete Moon Crest secured for the later four-crest passage. The later upstairs Yawn event and the Library’s hidden MO Disk remain separate mansion-return objectives.

1. Push the Dining Room statue and collect the Blue Jewel

From the second-floor balcony overlooking the Dining Room, approach the large statue beside the railing and push it through the opening. Return to the first-floor Dining Room and examine the broken remains near the table to collect the Blue Jewel. This is the original PlayStation arrangement; do not substitute item placements from Director’s Cut Arrange or other altered versions.

Before continuing, make room for the Blue Jewel, Music Notes and key items. Store excess ammunition or healing items in an item box. Keep a weapon and at least one recovery item available because the corridors leading to the piano room and Attic may contain enemies.

  • Reach the second-floor Dining Room balcony.
  • Push the statue over the railing.
  • Return downstairs and examine the broken remains.
  • Collect the Blue Jewel.
  • Clear inventory space before continuing.

2. Use the Blue Jewel at the Tiger Statue

Carry the Blue Jewel to the Tiger Statue room in the mansion’s west-side area and use it on the statue. The statue turns and reveals the Wind Crest. Take the crest before leaving.

The Wind Crest is needed later at the exterior crest plaque, but the complete set is not available yet. Store the crest temporarily if necessary, provided you remember which item box contains it. Do not attempt to open the exterior four-crest passage during this chapter.

  • Carry the Blue Jewel to the Tiger Statue.
  • Use the Blue Jewel on the statue.
  • Collect the Wind Crest.
  • Store it temporarily if inventory space is needed.

3. Find the Music Notes and open the piano passage

Enter the piano room, also called the Bar in some guides. Push the cabinet aside in the room’s northeast area and take the Music Notes. Use the Music Notes on the piano.

Jill can complete the performance herself. Chris cannot finish the performance on his first attempt: leave the room and return after Rebecca has finished practicing. This early Rebecca event is unrelated to her later Plant 42 assistance and Hunter rescue.

When the hidden passage opens, enter and take the Gold Emblem from the statue. Removing it closes the passage. Place the wooden Emblem from the Dining Room into the empty position so the passage opens again, then leave with the Gold Emblem. Store the Music Notes if you need the space.

  • Push the cabinet aside and collect the Music Notes.
  • Use the Music Notes on the piano.
  • Jill: complete the performance.
  • Chris: leave and return after Rebecca finishes practicing.
  • Enter the hidden passage.
  • Take the Gold Emblem.
  • Replace it with the wooden Emblem.

4. Place the Gold Emblem and obtain the Shield Key

Return to the first-floor Dining Room and place the Gold Emblem above the fireplace, replacing the wooden Emblem. The grandfather clock moves aside and reveals a compartment. Search it and take the key, then examine it in the inventory to confirm that it is the Shield Key.

The Wind Crest comes from the Tiger Statue; the Shield Key comes from the Dining Room clock. Keep these objectives distinct. The Shield Key opens the upstairs route to the Attic Yawn encounter.

Take a suitable weapon and at least one healing item before entering the Attic route. A save before the encounter is useful, but avoid spending Ink Ribbons for every short trip. Use the Shield Key on the upstairs door leading toward the Attic and discard it when the game confirms that it is no longer useful.

  • Place the Gold Emblem above the Dining Room fireplace.
  • Search the compartment behind the moved clock.
  • Take and examine the key.
  • Confirm that it is the Shield Key.
  • Use the Shield Key on the Attic route.
  • Discard the key when it becomes useless.

5. Resolve the first Attic Yawn encounter before taking the Moon Crest

Enter the Attic far enough to trigger Yawn. The snake can poison you and pin you against the walls, so keep moving around the central obstruction. Avoid standing directly in front of its head and do not trade bites for damage.

You do not have to kill Yawn. For an avoidance strategy, keep circling and evade its attacks until the encounter has completed its retreat sequence. Do not take the Moon Crest during the active chase. The crest is obtained from the hole after Yawn has been defeated or has withdrawn into it.

If you choose to attack, fire when Yawn’s head is exposed and immediately reposition. Use the open space to avoid being cornered rather than standing still for repeated shots. Once Yawn has been defeated or has retreated, approach the hole, collect the complete Moon Crest and leave the Attic. If you are poisoned, return to a safe area and recover before continuing the mansion route.

  • Enter the Attic and trigger Yawn.
  • Keep moving around the central obstruction.
  • Either damage Yawn or evade it until the retreat sequence finishes.
  • Wait until the first encounter is resolved.
  • Enter the hole after Yawn’s defeat or retreat.
  • Collect the complete Moon Crest.
  • Leave and recover if poisoned.

6. End the chapter with the two secured crests

At the handoff, you should have the Wind Crest from the Tiger Statue and the complete Moon Crest from the Attic hole. The original North American PlayStation release uses one complete Moon Crest here; do not use the split-crest arrangement associated with altered versions.

Return obsolete puzzle items to an item box and keep both crests available for the later exterior plaque. The Star Crest and Sun Crest come from separate mansion puzzles covered next. Do not insert any crest into the exterior plaque yet because the required set is incomplete.

The later Yawn encounter is a separate upstairs Piano Room or Lesson Room event during the mansion-return route. It involves examining the piano, opening a floor hole and, on Jill’s route, Barry’s rope event. It is not the remake’s Library or Ballroom battle. The Library’s hidden MO Disk is also a later mansion-return objective and is unrelated to both Yawn encounters in this chapter.

  • Keep the Wind Crest from the Tiger Statue.
  • Keep the complete Moon Crest from the Attic hole.
  • Leave the Star Crest and Sun Crest for the next mansion section.
  • Do not insert crests into the exterior plaque yet.
  • Reserve the later upstairs Yawn event for the mansion-return sequence.
  • Reserve the hidden Library MO Disk for the later laboratory-preparation route.

Before you move on

  • The second-floor Dining Room statue has been pushed down.
  • The Blue Jewel has been collected from the broken statue.
  • The Blue Jewel has been used on the Tiger Statue.
  • The Wind Crest has been collected.
  • The Music Notes have been taken from behind the cabinet in the piano room.
  • Jill has completed the piano performance, or Chris has returned after Rebecca finishes practicing.
  • The Gold Emblem has been taken from the hidden passage.
  • The wooden Emblem has replaced the Gold Emblem in the passage.
  • The Gold Emblem has been placed above the Dining Room fireplace.
  • The clock compartment has been searched and the key examined as the Shield Key.
  • The Shield Key has opened the Attic route and has been discarded once useless.
  • The first Attic Yawn encounter has been defeated or has completed its retreat sequence.
  • The complete Moon Crest has been collected from the hole after that encounter resolution.
  • The Wind Crest and complete Moon Crest are secured for later use.
  • The Star Crest and Sun Crest remain uncollected.
  • The exterior four-crest passage remains unopened.
  • The courtyard and Guardhouse remain objectives for the next chapter.
  • The later upstairs Yawn event and hidden Library MO Disk remain reserved for the mansion-return sequence.

West Wing: Armor Key, Armor Room, Portrait Gallery and Four-Crest Passage

After the first Attic Yawn and Shield Key progression, obtain the Chemical from the mansion’s first-floor storage room and use it in the Plant Room to kill the large plant. Take the Armor Key revealed behind it, then use that key to enter the original-release Armor Room and obtain the Sun Crest. Solve the first-floor Portrait Room puzzle to obtain the Star Crest, verify the Wind and Moon Crests, and install all four crests at the exterior panel. The opened passage leads to the Garden Shed and the next courtyard section.

Prepare for the Chemical and Armor Key route

Begin at a mansion safe room with an item box and typewriter after completing the first Attic Yawn sequence and taking the Shield Key. The Wind Crest and Moon Crest should already be secured or stored. Do not return to the attic solely to repeat the Yawn event.

Take a dependable firearm, suitable ammunition, one healing item and enough inventory space for the Chemical and Armor Key. Leave optional weapons and excess supplies in the item box. Jill can use her Lockpick for several doors; Chris must use the appropriate mansion keys when a locked door requires one.

The required progression in this chapter is Chemical, Plant Room, Armor Key, Armor Room, Sun Crest, Portrait Room, Star Crest and the four-crest panel. The Chemical is not optional: without using it on the Plant Room water supply, the Armor Key remains inaccessible.

This chapter covers the standard 1996 North American PlayStation release. Do not import the alternate crest locations or puzzle arrangements from Director’s Cut, Arrange mode, DualShock variants or the 2002 remake.

  • The first Attic Yawn sequence is complete.
  • The Shield Key progression is complete.
  • Wind Crest and Moon Crest are accounted for.
  • A firearm, ammunition and healing item are ready.
  • At least two inventory spaces are free.
  • The Chemical is the next required item.

Collect the Chemical from the first-floor mansion storage room

Travel to the first-floor mansion safe room beneath the Botany Book area. This is the storage room with the item box and typewriter associated with the early west-side mansion route. Search the supplies and take the Chemical.

If the room is already familiar from an earlier visit, check the item box before leaving so the Chemical is carried safely without sacrificing the weapon or healing item needed for the Plant Room approach. The Chemical occupies an inventory slot until it is used.

Do not confuse this Chemical with Guardhouse chemicals used later for the Plant 42 V-JOLT route. The item needed here is the mansion Chemical used in the Plant Room’s water filter.

  • The mansion Chemical was collected.
  • The Chemical is in the active inventory.
  • A weapon and healing item remain available.
  • An inventory slot remains open for the Armor Key.

Use the Chemical in the Plant Room and take the Armor Key

From the first-floor route, enter the mansion Plant Room. The large plant blocks the wall-mounted key display. Locate the water filter or water-supply control beside the plant and use the Chemical on it when prompted.

The treated water kills the plant and clears the obstruction. Examine the newly accessible wall display and take the Armor Key. This is the original-release method for obtaining the key in both Jill’s and Chris’s scenarios.

If the Chemical is not accepted, confirm that you are in the mansion Plant Room rather than the later Guardhouse dormitory or Aqua Ring. If the plant is still blocking the display, the water filter interaction has not been completed.

Once the Armor Key is collected, return toward the mansion corridors. You may discard the key later only when the game confirms that it has no remaining doors to open; keep it for now because the next objective requires it.

  • The mansion Plant Room was entered.
  • The Chemical was used in the Plant Room water filter.
  • The large plant no longer blocks the wall display.
  • The Armor Key was collected.
  • The Armor Key was not confused with the later Helmet Key.

Enter the Armor Room and obtain the Sun Crest

Use the Armor Key on the second-floor mansion door leading to the Armor Room. The room contains two movable statues, two floor openings and a central switch. This is the original PlayStation release’s gas-trap puzzle, not the remake’s four-knight arrangement.

Push one statue over each floor opening. Check both positions before operating the central switch. The openings must be covered before the switch is activated; otherwise poisonous gas is released and damages the character.

With both openings blocked, operate the central switch. The rear display case opens or lowers, revealing the Sun Crest. Take it and leave the room. Clearing every enemy in nearby corridors is unnecessary, so avoid spending ammunition merely to make the route safe for a later return.

  • The Armor Room was opened with the Armor Key.
  • One statue covers each floor opening.
  • The central switch was used after both openings were covered.
  • The Sun Crest was collected from the rear display case.

Solve the Portrait Room puzzle for the Star Crest

Reach the first-floor Portrait Room, also called the Art Gallery. Read the clue and examine the portrait captions before activating the switches beneath the paintings. The puzzle represents the stages of life.

Activate the portraits from youngest to oldest: newborn baby, infant, lively boy, young man, tired middle-aged man and bold-looking old man. After those six switches, activate the final death-stage painting at the end of the room. The exact positions can be identified from the captions, so do not rely only on a memorized left-to-right order.

Pressing a portrait switch out of order resets the puzzle and can provoke the crows. If this happens, leave through the door, re-enter after the room resets and try again. Keep moving around the room rather than stopping for an unnecessary fight.

When the final painting drops, collect the Star Crest. This is the original-release Portrait Room reward; do not look for the Star Crest in the second-floor dining room, where later editions place different crest items.

  • The Portrait Room clue was examined.
  • The portraits were identified by their life-stage captions.
  • The six life-stage switches were activated from youngest to oldest.
  • The final death-stage painting was activated.
  • The Star Crest was collected.

Verify the four crests and open the exterior passage

Return to an item box if necessary and verify the required crest set: Wind Crest, Moon Crest, Sun Crest and Star Crest. In the original release, the Wind Crest comes from the Blue Jewel and Tiger Statue sequence, while the Moon Crest is obtained during the first Attic Yawn progression. Those earlier objectives should not be repeated here.

Carry the four crests together if inventory space permits. Take a weapon and healing item for the route to the exterior panel, but store optional weapons and surplus ammunition so the next chapter can accommodate the Square Crank and courtyard supplies.

Reach the exterior panel behind the mansion on the route leading toward the Garden Shed. Place the Wind, Moon, Sun and Star Crests into the four recessed spaces. There is no special placement order that must be discovered.

When all four crests are installed, the panel opens the passage beyond the mansion. Continue far enough to confirm that the Garden Shed area is accessible, then stop this chapter. The Square Crank, courtyard waterway and Guardhouse entrance belong to the next section.

  • Wind Crest is present or stored.
  • Moon Crest is present or stored.
  • Sun Crest is present or stored.
  • Star Crest is present or stored.
  • All four crests were installed at the exterior panel.
  • The panel opened the Garden Shed passage.
  • The next objective is the Square Crank and courtyard-waterway route.

Before you move on

  • The mansion Chemical was collected from the first-floor storage room.
  • The Chemical was used in the Plant Room water filter.
  • The plant obstruction was cleared.
  • The Armor Key was collected from the Plant Room display.
  • The Armor Room gas-trap puzzle was solved.
  • The Sun Crest was collected.
  • The Portrait Room puzzle was solved.
  • The Star Crest was collected.
  • Wind, Moon, Sun and Star Crests were verified.
  • All four crests were placed in the exterior panel.
  • The panel opened the Garden Shed passage.
  • The next objective is the Garden Shed, Square Crank and courtyard-waterway route.

Courtyard and Guardhouse Entry — Cerberus, Square Crank and Waterway

After the four-crest passage is open, collect the Square Crank from the Garden Shed, drain the first courtyard waterway and cross to the lower courtyard. Avoid spending supplies on optional fights, then pass the Cerberus-lined route into the Guardhouse. The chapter ends in the Guardhouse’s first storage and typewriter room. Dormitory 001, the Clubroom, the Aqua Ring, Plant 42, the Helmet Key and the later mansion return belong to the following chapters.

Prepare at the four-crest passage

Begin at the mansion-side passage that opened after all four crests were placed. The crest puzzle is complete and does not need to be repeated. Before stepping outside, visit the nearby item box and remove unnecessary documents, spare key items and weapons you will not use immediately.

Carry a firearm, ammunition, at least one healing item and enough empty inventory space for the Square Crank and supplies found on the courtyard route. Jill has more room than Chris, but both characters benefit from leaving several slots open. A shotgun is helpful if a Cerberus blocks a narrow route, although running past dogs is usually more efficient than clearing the whole area.

  • Confirm the four-crest passage is already open.
  • Store the four crests and unnecessary key items.
  • Carry a firearm, ammunition, healing and open inventory space.

Take the Square Crank from the Garden Shed

Enter the small Garden Shed beyond the opened passage. The Square Crank is on a high shelf. Push the movable steps or stool into position beneath the shelf, climb up and take the crank. Examine it in the inventory so its name is confirmed as Square Crank.

This is the crank used at the first courtyard waterway. Do not confuse it with the later Hexagonal Crank obtained much deeper in the game. If you collect a nearby optional healing item, take it only when doing so will not prevent you from carrying the crank, a weapon and ammunition.

  • Move the steps or stool beneath the high shelf.
  • Take the Square Crank.
  • Examine it and confirm the item name.

Cross the first courtyard

Leave the shed through the large doors to enter the first open courtyard. Cerberus dogs patrol this area. Use the perimeter, flowerbeds and corners to limit the angles from which they can approach. With tank controls, begin turning before a corner so the character is facing the next lane instead of stopping against the camera boundary.

If a dog closes the route, fire from a straight section and continue toward the far gate. Do not stand in the center trying to defeat every dog. The Garden Map can be collected from the courtyard wall if you want a layout reference, but it is optional and should not displace the Square Crank or a healing item.

  • Use the courtyard edges and corners to avoid unnecessary contact.
  • Take the Garden Map only if inventory space permits.
  • Reach the gate leading to the waterway.

Drain and cross the first waterway

Follow the waterway until you reach the control point with the square-shaped socket. Use the Square Crank on the socket. The water drains from the channel and exposes the crossing route.

Return to the ladder beside the drained channel, climb down, cross the exposed passage and climb the ladder on the opposite side. Keep moving once you reach the upper path. Small snakes drop from the trees in this section, and stopping beneath them can cause avoidable damage or poison. If poisoning occurs, continue toward the lift and use a Blue Herb or mixed herb once you are in a safer position.

  • Use the Square Crank at the waterway control point.
  • Descend by the first ladder.
  • Cross the drained channel and climb the opposite ladder.
  • Continue through the snake section without stopping unnecessarily.

Use the lower-courtyard lift

After the snake section, continue straight to the lift and activate it. The lift takes you down to the lower courtyard. Cerberus dogs are present here as well, so move immediately toward the next gate and use your weapon only when a dog blocks the route or forces you into a corner.

The lower courtyard contains the inactive Battery lift and the waterfall route that will matter later. Neither objective can be completed during this initial visit. Do not search for the Battery or attempt to open the waterfall passage now; the required Battery is collected after the later mansion return.

  • Reach and activate the lower-courtyard lift.
  • Move toward the gate instead of fighting in the open.
  • Leave the Battery lift and waterfall for the later route.

Pass the Cerberus route to the Guardhouse

Go through the gate opposite the lift and follow the passage toward the Guardhouse. More Cerberus may attack around the corners. Use the door transitions and the narrow bends as escape points. If a dog is already in the passage, retreat around the previous corner, let it commit to the approach and fire while maintaining space.

Optional herbs are placed near the Guardhouse approach. Take them only if you have room after keeping your weapon, ammunition and healing supplies. Combining compatible herbs before entering the building can free a slot, but do not stop in the open passage to manage the inventory while dogs are nearby.

  • Cross the gate opposite the lower-courtyard lift.
  • Use corners and doorways as defensive choke points.
  • Reach the Guardhouse door.
  • Collect optional herbs only if they fit without displacing required supplies.

Enter the Guardhouse and secure the first save room

Enter the Guardhouse through the single wooden door. A movable statue stands in the entrance hall near the plant-covered opening. Push the statue along the hall and position it over the floor hole beside the plant passage. This prevents the plant from reaching through the opening while you move around the entrance area.

From the entrance, take the first nearby door into the Guardhouse storage room. This room contains an item box and a typewriter. Deposit the Square Crank because it is not needed again until the later courtyard return, then organize ammunition and healing supplies. Saving here is sensible if you have an Ink Ribbon, since the courtyard crossing and Guardhouse approach are now complete.

Stop at this point. Do not enter Dormitory 001, the Clubroom or the Aqua Ring as part of this chapter. The next chapter begins the Guardhouse interior sequence and handles its keys, puzzles, Plant 42 route and Helmet Key.

  • Push the entrance statue over the plant passage floor hole.
  • Enter the first Guardhouse storage room.
  • Confirm that the room has an item box and typewriter.
  • Deposit the Square Crank.
  • Save if desired and prepare for the Guardhouse interior chapter.

Before you move on

  • The four-crest passage was already open when this chapter began.
  • The Square Crank was collected from the high shelf in the Garden Shed.
  • The first courtyard waterway was drained with the Square Crank.
  • The drained channel was crossed by ladder.
  • The falling-snake section was passed.
  • The lower-courtyard lift was used.
  • The Battery lift and waterfall remain unresolved for the later mansion-return route.
  • The Cerberus passage opposite the lift was crossed.
  • The Guardhouse was entered.
  • The entrance statue was positioned over the plant passage floor hole.
  • The first Guardhouse storage room was entered.
  • The item box and typewriter were located.
  • The Square Crank was stored for later use.
  • The next objective is the Guardhouse interior route, beginning with Dormitory 001; Plant 42, the Helmet Key and the mansion return are not yet complete.

Guardhouse — Plant 42 and the Root Network

After opening the four-crest passage, complete the original North American PlayStation Guardhouse route. Jill can weaken Plant 42 with V-JOLT or fight it directly. Chris can receive Rebecca’s V-JOLT assistance only if the earlier Rebecca, Richard and timing conditions preserved that event; choosing No leads to the direct-fight route. In either campaign, the Guardhouse sequence ends when Plant 42 is defeated, the Helmet Key is taken from the fireplace and the character returns toward the courtyard.

1. Enter the Guardhouse and prepare at the Guardpost

Enter the Guardhouse from the courtyard after the four-crest passage has been opened. Move the statue in the entrance corridor to reach the Guardpost, the Guardhouse storage room with the typewriter and item box.

Before going farther, stage a firearm, appropriate ammunition and at least one healing item. Leave several inventory spaces available for the Control Room Key, Room 002 Key, Room 003 Key, Red Book and White Book. Store unrelated mansion keys and optional supplies.

This is a sensible place to save before the Guardhouse sequence. Each typewriter use consumes an Ink Ribbon, so save at a meaningful milestone rather than after every room.

  • Enter the Guardhouse after opening the four-crest passage.
  • Move the entrance statue and locate the Guardpost.
  • Find the typewriter and item box.
  • Carry a firearm, ammunition and healing.
  • Leave several inventory spaces open.

2. Search Room 001

Enter Room 001 and drain the bathtub. Take the Control Room Key from inside. This is the original-release location; later Arrange versions move important Guardhouse items.

Search the bedroom and take the Red Book from the bed. Jill may use her Lockpick on optional locked furniture, while Chris should ignore Lockpick-specific directions and concentrate on the required route.

Return to the main Guardhouse area if your inventory is crowded. The Red Book will be used in Room 003, and the Control Room Key is needed to reach the Armory.

  • Drain the Room 001 bathtub.
  • Take the Control Room Key.
  • Collect the Red Book from the bed.
  • Use the Guardpost item box if inventory space is needed.

3. Take the Room 002 Key and drain the Aqua Ring

Enter the large wasp room and take the Room 002 Key from the small table. Wasps begin emerging after the pickup, so leave immediately through the door you used.

Use the key on Room 002. Read or take the Plant 42 Report, then push the bookcases aside to reveal the ladder to the basement.

At the flooded basement passage, push the crates into position to form a crossing. Continue to the Aqua Ring and enter the Control Room. Use the Control Room Key at the control panel to drain the water, then operate the nearby mechanism to open the Armory.

Enter the Armory and take the Room 003 Key from the shelf. Do not confuse this with the Helmet Key. The Helmet Key is obtained only after Plant 42 is defeated.

  • Take the Room 002 Key from the wasp room.
  • Use it on Room 002.
  • Reveal and descend the basement ladder.
  • Create the crate bridge across the flooded passage.
  • Drain the Aqua Ring.
  • Open the Armory and take the Room 003 Key.

4. Open Room 003 and reveal Plant 42’s room

Return upstairs and use the Room 003 Key on the door near the wasp room. Search the bathroom for its supplies if desired, then take the White Book from the bookcase. The White Book contains the V-JOLT report and describes the chemical puzzle.

Place the Red Book in the bookcase. The shelf moves and reveals the entrance to Plant 42’s room.

Before entering, return to the Guardpost if you need to save, heal or change weapons. Jill can decide whether to prepare V-JOLT. Chris should first consider whether the earlier Rebecca conditions for assistance were preserved.

  • Use the Room 003 Key.
  • Take the White Book and read the V-JOLT report.
  • Place the Red Book in the bookcase.
  • Reveal the Plant 42 passage.
  • Prepare healing and weapons before the boss sequence.

5. Jill’s V-JOLT route or direct fight

Jill has no Rebecca-controlled Guardhouse event. She may defeat Plant 42 directly or prepare V-JOLT herself and apply it to the exposed roots in the drained Aqua Ring before returning to the boss room.

To make V-JOLT, use the chemical room opened by the character-specific billiard-table keypad clue. Collect three empty bottles and follow this exact sequence: combine Water with UMB No. 2 to make NP-003; combine UMB No. 2 with UMB No. 4 to make Yellow-6; combine NP-003 with UMB No. 4 to make UMB No. 7; combine Yellow-6 with UMB No. 7 to make UMB No. 13; make a second NP-003 by combining Water with UMB No. 2; then combine that second NP-003 with UMB No. 13 to make V-JOLT, also identified in the report as UMB No. 16.

Carry V-JOLT down to the exposed roots in the Aqua Ring and use it there. Return upstairs through Room 002 and Room 003, replace the Red Book if necessary, and enter the Plant 42 room. The weakened plant still requires the appropriate finishing attack. Keep moving during the fight, watch for falling debris and heal before damage leaves Jill in danger.

If you skip V-JOLT, bring a dependable weapon and healing to the boss room. Use short firing opportunities, retreat from the vines and avoid standing directly beneath the plant.

  • Use the billiard-table clue to open the chemical room.
  • Collect three empty bottles.
  • Make NP-003 from Water plus UMB No. 2.
  • Make Yellow-6 from UMB No. 2 plus UMB No. 4.
  • Make UMB No. 7 from NP-003 plus UMB No. 4.
  • Make UMB No. 13 from Yellow-6 plus UMB No. 7.
  • Make a second NP-003 from Water plus UMB No. 2.
  • Combine the second NP-003 with UMB No. 13 to make V-JOLT or UMB No. 16.
  • Apply V-JOLT to the exposed roots.
  • Return to the Plant 42 room and finish the weakened boss, or fight it directly.

6. Chris’s intended Yes and Rebecca-assisted route

For the intended assisted Chris route, Rebecca must have been preserved as an active partner before the Guardhouse. The relevant earlier meeting, the response that allows her to accompany Chris and the applicable Richard or timing conditions all matter. Choosing Yes is the intended setup, but Yes by itself does not guarantee that Rebecca will appear later.

When the assisted event is active, enter the Plant 42 room as Chris. Plant 42 grabs him and control changes to Rebecca. Leave the room and follow the Guardhouse route back to the chemical room. Use the character-specific billiard-table clue to open it, collect three empty bottles and make V-JOLT with the corrected sequence: Water plus UMB No. 2 makes NP-003; UMB No. 2 plus UMB No. 4 makes Yellow-6; NP-003 plus UMB No. 4 makes UMB No. 7; Yellow-6 plus UMB No. 7 makes UMB No. 13; Water plus UMB No. 2 makes a second NP-003; and the second NP-003 combined with UMB No. 13 makes V-JOLT, or UMB No. 16.

Take the V-JOLT to the exposed roots in the drained Aqua Ring and use it there. Control returns to Chris. Go back to Plant 42’s room and defeat the weakened plant yourself. Rebecca’s action weakens the boss; it does not replace the final fight.

If Rebecca does not appear after the grab, do not wait indefinitely for the scene. Review whether the earlier Rebecca meeting, the Yes response, Richard’s event and the relevant timing conditions were preserved. If the required conditions were not met, continue with the direct-fight recovery route.

  • Meet Rebecca at the applicable earlier point.
  • Answer Yes when using the intended assisted setup.
  • Preserve the relevant Richard and timing conditions.
  • Confirm that Rebecca actually appears after Chris is grabbed.
  • Make NP-003, Yellow-6, UMB No. 7 and UMB No. 13 in the correct order.
  • Make the second NP-003 and combine it with UMB No. 13 to create V-JOLT or UMB No. 16.
  • Apply V-JOLT to the Aqua Ring roots.
  • Return to Chris and defeat the weakened Plant 42.

7. Chris’s No route and direct-fight recovery

If Chris answered No when Rebecca asked whether she should accompany him, the Guardhouse proceeds without Rebecca’s V-JOLT sequence. Enter Plant 42’s room with a weapon, ammunition and healing ready, then defeat the boss directly.

Use the same safe principles as Jill: fire during openings, keep repositioning, retreat from the vines and heal before a mistake becomes fatal. Do not depend on a fixed ammunition total or a guaranteed one-shot method.

Use this direct fight as the recovery route if Chris answered Yes but the earlier conditions were not preserved and Rebecca fails to appear. That outcome means the assisted event was not active for the current file; it does not create a second Rebecca-controlled chemical sequence.

The later Rebecca rescue is a separate event. The preserved Yes-oriented route normally leads to the Library-side Hunter event, while the No-oriented or alternate direct route normally leads to the Serum or nearby medical area. When the mansion-return warning appears, go to the location indicated by the active event rather than searching both areas at random.

  • Use the direct-fight route after Chris chooses No.
  • Use the same route if the intended Yes conditions were not preserved.
  • Defeat Plant 42 without Rebecca’s V-JOLT assistance.
  • Respond to the later Rebecca warning at the location actually activated.

8. Take the Helmet Key and leave the Guardhouse

After Plant 42 is defeated, examine the fireplace in the boss room and take the Helmet Key. In the original North American PlayStation release, this is the Guardhouse reward for completing the Plant 42 sequence.

Leave through the double doors and return toward the Guardpost. Store empty bottles, unused chemicals and Guardhouse supplies that are no longer needed. Keep the Helmet Key, a weapon and healing for the mansion return.

Jill can proceed after collecting the key. Chris should remember which Rebecca branch actually activated. A successful Yes-oriented setup normally leads to the later Library-side rescue, while the No or failed-assisted route normally leads to the Serum-side event. The next chapter handles that mansion return, the Hunters and the remaining Helmet Key doors.

  • Defeat Plant 42.
  • Take the Helmet Key from the fireplace.
  • Reorganize at the Guardpost item box.
  • Chris: remember the Rebecca event that actually activated.
  • Exit the Guardhouse toward the courtyard and mansion.

Before you move on

  • The Guardhouse was entered after opening the four-crest passage.
  • The Guardpost typewriter and item box were located.
  • Room 001 was searched, the bathtub was drained and the Control Room Key was collected.
  • The Red Book was taken from the Room 001 bed.
  • The Room 002 Key was taken beside the wasp nest and used on Room 002.
  • The Aqua Ring was drained through the Control Room.
  • The Room 003 Key was taken from the basement Armory.
  • Room 003 was opened, the White Book was obtained and the Red Book revealed the Plant 42 passage.
  • Jill either made V-JOLT herself with the corrected NP-003, Yellow-6, UMB No. 7, UMB No. 13 and second NP-003 sequence, or defeated Plant 42 directly.
  • For Chris’s assisted plan, the earlier Rebecca and Richard conditions were preserved, Rebecca appeared, V-JOLT or UMB No. 16 was made and applied, and Chris defeated the weakened Plant 42.
  • For Chris’s direct plan or recovery route, Chris defeated Plant 42 without Rebecca’s V-JOLT assistance.
  • The Helmet Key was collected from the Plant 42 fireplace.
  • Chris’s player knows that the later Rebecca rescue is separate and must be handled at the location indicated by the active branch.
  • The Guardhouse was exited toward the courtyard and mansion return.
  • Both protagonists finish this chapter with the original-release Helmet Key.

Guardhouse Return, Mansion Kitchen, Rebecca Triggers, Hunters and the Forest Sequence

After defeating Plant 42 and taking the Helmet Key from the Guardhouse fireplace, return to Spencer Mansion and prepare for the Hunter transition. Chris must respond to whichever Rebecca rescue event was actually established by the earlier Rebecca and Richard sequence; choosing Yes is the intended V-JOLT-oriented, usually Library-side branch, while choosing No is the intended direct-Plant-42, usually Serum-area branch. Neither result is guaranteed by that answer alone. Jill has no Rebecca rescue event. Continue through the second Yawn encounter in the upstairs Piano Room, cross the mansion basement kitchen, use the mansion elevator and collect the first Battery from the small closet on the second mansion floor near the Library, beside the elevator-side route. That Battery powers the courtyard lift and is distinct from the later Battery beside the laboratory escape elevator. After using the Square Crank to close the waterfall route, enter the caves and hand the game over to the next chapter.

Leave the Guardhouse and prepare for the mansion return

Begin this chapter only after Plant 42 has been defeated and the Helmet Key has been collected from the fireplace. Do not repeat the Guardhouse, Aqua Ring, V-JOLT or Plant 42 route.

At the Guardhouse item box, take the Helmet Key, a dependable weapon, enough ammunition for Hunters and at least one healing item. Leave room for the Battery and Square Crank. Chris has fewer inventory slots, so store optional ammunition and excess herbs before leaving. Save at the Guardhouse typewriter if you want a recovery point before the mansion changes.

Travel back through the garden and courtyard to Spencer Mansion. Hunters now replace many zombies on the mansion routes. Kill enemies that block required doors, but avoid clearing every corridor. Narrow doorways, stair landings and room entrances are safer retreat points than open halls because Hunters can leap while you are recovering from a shot or turn.

  • Plant 42 is defeated.
  • The Helmet Key is in the inventory.
  • A weapon, ammunition, healing and free inventory space are ready.
  • The mansion-return route has begun.

Chris only: resolve the Rebecca event that actually activates

This section applies only to Chris. Jill has no Rebecca rescue event and should continue with the common mansion route.

The earlier Rebecca and Richard sequence determines whether the later V-JOLT and Hunter events are available. Choosing Yes in the relevant Rebecca conversation does not by itself create the V-JOLT sequence, and choosing No does not by itself guarantee the alternate medical-area rescue.

Treat Yes as the intended V-JOLT-oriented branch. If the necessary earlier conditions were preserved, Rebecca can remain available for the Plant 42 assistance and the later Hunter attack normally occurs in the small second-floor Library near the Botany Book. When Chris hears the relevant cue, go directly to that Library and kill the Hunter attacking Rebecca.

Treat No as the intended direct-Plant-42 branch. If its applicable conditions were preserved, Rebecca remains associated with the Serum Room or nearby medical route, and the later Hunter attack normally occurs there. Follow the active scream, radio message or story cue to the room where Rebecca actually appears instead of searching the Library by assumption.

If the run produces a different valid Rebecca location, the active cue takes priority over the expected Yes or No mapping. Do not delay the rescue for the Trophy Room, optional ammunition or an unnecessary item-box visit. If Rebecca has already been killed, reload a save from before that Hunter event if you want the stronger Chris ending; defeating Plant 42 with V-JOLT does not by itself complete the later rescue requirement.

  • Chris’s earlier Rebecca and Richard conditions were preserved as far as possible.
  • Yes is treated as the intended V-JOLT and usually Library-oriented branch, not an automatic guarantee.
  • No is treated as the intended direct-Plant-42 and usually Serum-area branch, not an automatic guarantee.
  • The active Rebecca cue was followed immediately.
  • The attacking Hunter was killed before optional exploration.
  • Jill skipped this Chris-only section.

Trigger and survive the second Yawn encounter

Use the Helmet Key to reach the upstairs Piano Room, also called the Music Room or Lesson Room in some walkthroughs. This is separate from the first Attic Yawn encounter and is not the remake’s Library or Ballroom battle.

Enter with a reliable weapon, ammunition and healing. Examine the piano to trigger Yawn, then keep moving around the room instead of standing against a wall. Fire during safe openings if you intend to fight; otherwise evade the snake long enough to reach the floor opening.

When the floor gives way, descend through the opening. Jill may receive Barry’s rope assistance during this event. Chris should use the available descent and continue through the route rather than waiting for a Jill-specific interaction.

  • The upstairs Piano Room was reached.
  • The second Yawn event was distinguished from the first Attic encounter.
  • The piano was examined.
  • The floor opening was used.

Cross the mansion basement kitchen and use the elevator

Follow the passage beneath the mansion to the basement kitchen. A zombie may be lying in the corridor or kitchen. If it does not block the exit, move around the fixtures and continue rather than spending valuable ammunition.

Use the connected mansion elevator to reach the upper mansion route. This elevator ride is required before the first Battery can be collected. Do not confuse this Battery with the separate Battery obtained beside the laboratory escape elevator after Tyrant-002.

After reaching the upper level, retreat through doorways if Hunters pressure you. If carrying the Helmet Key, weapon, healing and other supplies leaves no room for the Battery, use the nearest item box after confirming which remaining Helmet Key doors still matter.

  • The basement passage and kitchen were crossed.
  • The mansion elevator was used.
  • The upper mansion route was reached.
  • The courtyard-lift Battery was kept separate from the final escape Battery.

Collect the first Battery from the small second-floor closet near the Library

From the elevator-side upper route, follow the second-floor corridor toward the Library. Locate the small closet near the Library, beside the elevator-side route. In the original North American PlayStation release, this closet contains the first Battery along with character-dependent ammunition. Take the Battery; it is required to power the lift in the courtyard and open the route toward the caves.

This is the original-release location. Do not substitute the hidden Library study used by Director’s Cut or other rearranged versions. The room is a small storage closet on the second mansion floor, not the later laboratory Power Room and not the escape-lift area.

If inventory space is tight, leave optional ammunition behind and return to an item box after collecting the Battery. The Battery, Square Crank, a weapon and healing have priority. Check remaining Helmet Key doors before discarding the key, then store or discard it once no useful locked door remains.

  • The small second-floor closet near the Library was reached.
  • The first Battery was collected from that closet.
  • The Battery was identified as the courtyard-lift item.
  • The later Battery beside the laboratory escape elevator was not confused with this item.
  • Optional ammunition was taken only if inventory space allowed.
  • The Helmet Key was discarded only after its useful doors were checked.

Optional Trophy Room reward and the original-release Forest

The Trophy Room is optional. If you want its reward, turn off the room’s light, move the steps below the mounted deer head and examine the glowing point on the head to obtain the Red Jewel. Take the jewel to the Tiger Statue to receive the Colt Python in the original North American PlayStation release. Store the weapon or ammunition if carrying it would displace the Battery, Square Crank or healing.

The Forest terrace is also optional. In this original release, Forest Speyer remains a corpse associated with the crow attack. Do not prepare for the Director’s Cut or remake-style Forest encounter; that battle is not part of this edition.

Skip both detours if supplies are low. Neither the Trophy Room reward nor the Forest visit is required for the cave route.

  • The Trophy Room was treated as optional.
  • The Red Jewel and Colt Python were collected only if the detour was worthwhile.
  • Forest Speyer was treated as a corpse in this edition.
  • Required inventory space was not sacrificed for optional rewards.

Install the Battery and open the cave route

Return through the mansion and garden to the lower courtyard. Locate the inactive lift with the empty Battery socket and use the Battery from the small second-floor closet near the Library on it. Ride the lift upward to the upper courtyard pool area.

Cross the upper courtyard carefully. Small snakes can fall from the trees, so keep moving and avoid stopping beneath them. Continue to the square mechanism beside the pool and use the Square Crank. The pool refills, the water gate closes and the waterfall below stops.

Return to the lift and ride it back down. In the lower courtyard, enter the passage that was hidden behind the stopped waterfall and climb down the revealed ladder. Continue through the opened route into the caves.

Do not repeat the Guardhouse sequence after entering the caves. The next chapter begins with the cave MO Disk, Doom Book, medal, Enrico and boulder objectives.

  • The Battery from the small second-floor closet near the Library was installed at the courtyard lift.
  • The lift was used to reach the upper courtyard.
  • The Square Crank was used at the pool mechanism.
  • The waterfall stopped.
  • The ladder behind the former waterfall was entered.
  • The protagonist reached the caves.

Before you move on

  • The protagonist left the Guardhouse after defeating Plant 42 and collecting the Helmet Key.
  • The mansion Hunter transition was survived.
  • For Chris, the earlier Rebecca and Richard conditions were preserved as far as possible.
  • For Chris, the selected Yes or No mapping was treated as an intended branch rather than an automatic guarantee.
  • Chris followed the active Library, Serum-area or medical-room cue and killed the attacking Hunter if preserving Rebecca.
  • Jill skipped the Chris-only Rebecca instructions.
  • The second upstairs Piano Room Yawn was triggered and its floor opening was used.
  • The basement kitchen was crossed.
  • The connected mansion elevator was used to reach the upper route.
  • The small second-floor closet near the Library, beside the elevator-side route, was reached.
  • The first Battery was collected from that closet.
  • The first Battery was identified as the courtyard-lift Battery, separate from the later escape Battery.
  • Remaining useful Helmet Key rooms were checked before discarding the key.
  • The optional Trophy Room and Colt Python detour was completed only if desired.
  • Forest Speyer was treated as a corpse in the original North American release.
  • The first Battery was installed at the courtyard lift.
  • The Square Crank was used to stop the waterfall.
  • The ladder behind the waterfall was opened.
  • The protagonist entered the caves and is ready for the MO Disk, medal, Enrico and boulder objectives.

Basement Access — Switches, Reports and the Path Down

Complete the late-mansion handoff, open the underground cave route and solve the medal mechanism that lowers the fountain elevator to the laboratory. This chapter covers the first Battery, the courtyard lift, the Square Crank, the mansion and cave MO Disks, Enrico’s scene, the Hexagonal Crank, the boulder route and both Doom Books. Laboratory pass-code processing, Tyrant-002 and the final escape Battery begin in the next chapter.

Confirm the handoff and prepare the inventory

Begin after the Guardhouse is complete, the Helmet Key has been obtained and the later mansion return has occurred. The upstairs Piano Room Yawn sequence, mansion basement kitchen route and return to the main mansion should already be finished. Do not repeat those events.

Check whether the courtyard lift and waterfall route are already open. If both are complete, use an item box and stage a strong firearm, suitable ammunition, healing and enough empty inventory space for cave key items. If the bridge is unfinished, first return to the small second-floor closet near the mansion Library and collect the Battery for the courtyard lift.

This Battery is the earlier of the game’s two Batteries. It powers the courtyard elevator and is not the Battery used during the final escape. Take the Square Crank as well if it is not already available in the courtyard-side item box.

Hunters may now occupy mansion corridors. Use door transitions and safe-room storage to manage risk instead of trying to clear every route permanently. Before leaving for the courtyard, prioritize the Battery, Square Crank, a weapon, ammunition, healing and open inventory slots.

  • The Guardhouse and late-mansion route are complete.
  • The upstairs Piano Room Yawn and mansion return events are complete.
  • The first Battery is confirmed in the small second-floor closet near the mansion Library or already installed at the courtyard lift.
  • The Square Crank is available.
  • A weapon, ammunition, healing and empty inventory space are staged.

Finish the courtyard bridge if necessary

Skip this section if the courtyard lift is already powered and the waterfall passage is open. Repeating the sequence only creates additional exposure to enemies.

If the lift is unpowered, enter the lower courtyard and use the Battery at the socket beside the lift. Ride the lift upward. The Battery remains committed to this mechanism; it is not the escape Battery and will not be carried into the laboratory route.

At the upper courtyard, go to the water-control mechanism and use the Square Crank. This changes the water level and removes the waterfall that blocks the lower passage.

Ride the lift back down, cross the lower courtyard and follow the newly opened route to the cave entrance. Both conditions matter: the lift must be powered, and the waterfall passage must be open. If the route still appears blocked, confirm that the crank was used at the upper-courtyard mechanism rather than simply examining the lift.

  • The Battery from the small second-floor closet near the mansion Library was installed at the courtyard lift when required.
  • The Square Crank was used at the upper-courtyard water mechanism.
  • The lift was taken back down.
  • The waterfall passage is open.
  • The cave entrance is accessible.

Secure the mansion MO Disk and Eagle Medal

During the preceding mansion route, enter the hidden study reached through the Library mechanism and collect the mansion MO Disk. If it is already in an item box, verify it before leaving for the caves. This disk is one of the three disks required later, but it is not processed in this chapter.

Collect Doom Book 1 from the study across from the Portrait Room. Examine the book in the inventory to reveal the Eagle Medal. The fountain accepts the medal, not the unopened book.

Store the MO Disk or Eagle Medal if inventory space is tight, but make sure both are safely accounted for before committing to the cave sequence. Do not confuse the mansion MO Disk with the separate cave MO Disk obtained later.

  • The mansion MO Disk is secured.
  • Doom Book 1 was collected from the study across from the Portrait Room.
  • Doom Book 1 was examined.
  • The Eagle Medal was obtained and stored or carried.

Resolve Jill’s Barry cave event

This section applies only to Jill. Chris does not receive Barry’s cave sequence and should continue through the same underground route without waiting for him.

Barry’s survival depends on earlier events as well as this scene. Favorable handling of the shotgun trap and the replacement-rope event must already have occurred; the cave encounter cannot repair an earlier failure.

When Barry accompanies Jill underground, choose the favorable responses that keep him involved. If a gunshot is heard, immediately turn around and move back toward the sound instead of continuing deeper into the cave.

Enter the room where the Hunter is attacking Barry and defeat that Hunter before leaving. Allow the scene to finish and confirm that Barry remains safe before continuing toward Enrico. Chris should omit this checklist entirely.

  • Jill’s earlier Barry events were handled favorably.
  • Barry accompanied Jill underground.
  • Jill returned immediately after hearing the gunshot.
  • The Hunter attacking Barry was defeated.
  • Barry’s cave scene finished before Jill continued.

Complete Enrico’s scene and collect the Hexagonal Crank

Follow the cave route until Enrico’s scene begins. Let the scene play out and receive his information before moving onward. After the scene, continue through the tunnel rather than returning to the entrance.

In the original North American PlayStation release, the Hexagonal Crank is on the ground in the tunnel after the Enrico scene. Pick it up before proceeding. Do not search Enrico’s body for it; that placement belongs to another edition.

The Hexagonal Crank is needed for the movable-wall mechanisms farther inside the caves. If your inventory is full, discard no key items; instead return an optional supply to an item box or use the nearby storage opportunity before advancing.

  • Enrico’s scene has completed.
  • The tunnel after the scene has been searched.
  • The Hexagonal Crank was collected from the ground.
  • Enough inventory space remains for the cave progression items.

Pass the boulders and collect the cave MO Disk

Use the Hexagonal Crank at the first matching wall socket to move the wall and open the next route. When a boulder is triggered, retreat through the nearby safe opening or doorway and wait until its movement has completely ended before crossing.

Continue through the cave and operate the next crank mechanism when the route requires it. A large spider hazard and ambush enemies can punish players who remain against a wall, so keep a retreat route available and avoid spending all healing on optional encounters.

Trigger the next boulder from a safe position and wait for it to finish. Enter the space it exposes and collect the cave MO Disk. This disk is separate from Doom Book 2 and from the mansion MO Disk.

If the web-blocked route appears, follow the original-release path and use the character’s available route equipment as required. The progression check is that the cave MO Disk is in your inventory or safely stored before leaving the underground section.

  • The first underground movable wall was operated with the Hexagonal Crank.
  • The boulder routes were crossed safely.
  • The exposed compartment was searched after the boulder finished moving.
  • The cave MO Disk was collected.
  • The cave MO Disk is secured for later laboratory processing.

Solve the separate Doom Book 2 and Wolf Medal puzzle

Reach the underground room containing the movable wall, statue and pressure plate. Use the Hexagonal Crank to reposition the wall so the statue can be pushed into the marked pressure-plate position.

Push the statue onto the pressure plate. When the hidden compartment opens, collect Doom Book 2 and examine it in the inventory to reveal the Wolf Medal.

This is a separate objective from the cave MO Disk. In the original release, Doom Book 2 is hidden in the pressure-plate puzzle room, while the cave MO Disk comes from the boulder route. Do not search one location for the item belonging to the other.

Retain the Wolf Medal until the fountain sequence. If inventory space is needed, store optional ammunition or healing rather than either medal.

  • The pressure-plate room was reached.
  • The movable wall was repositioned with the Hexagonal Crank.
  • The statue was placed on the pressure plate.
  • Doom Book 2 was collected.
  • Doom Book 2 was examined and the Wolf Medal was obtained.

Place both medals and descend to the laboratory entrance

Return through the cave route to the courtyard fountain. Use the Eagle Medal and Wolf Medal in their matching recesses. The Eagle Medal belongs on the eagle-marked side, and the Wolf Medal belongs on the wolf-marked side.

Do not insert either unopened Doom Book. Examine each book first and use the medals revealed inside them. When both medals are installed, the fountain drains and exposes the elevator below.

Before descending, confirm that the mansion MO Disk and cave MO Disk are secured in your inventory or an item box. The third MO Disk is found inside the laboratory and belongs to the next chapter.

Ride the fountain elevator down and reach the laboratory entrance. Stop there. Laboratory disk processing, three pass-code outputs, power restoration and Tyrant-002 are not part of this chapter.

The final escape Battery cannot be collected now. It appears beside the escape elevator during the post-Tyrant escape route, after the laboratory climax. It is not in the Power Room and is not available before Tyrant-002.

  • The Eagle Medal was placed in the fountain.
  • The Wolf Medal was placed in the fountain.
  • The fountain drained.
  • The laboratory elevator opened.
  • The mansion MO Disk and cave MO Disk are secured.
  • The laboratory entrance was reached.
  • The third MO Disk, pass-code processing, Tyrant-002 and final escape Battery remain for the next chapter.

Before you move on

  • The first Battery was collected from the small second-floor closet near the mansion Library when the courtyard bridge was unfinished.
  • The Battery was installed at the courtyard lift when required.
  • The Square Crank was used at the upper-courtyard water-control mechanism when required.
  • The waterfall passage was opened and the cave entrance was reached.
  • The mansion MO Disk was collected or confirmed in storage.
  • Doom Book 1 was collected from the study across from the Portrait Room.
  • Doom Book 1 was examined and the Eagle Medal was obtained.
  • Jill completed the favorable Barry cave responses, returned after the gunshot and defeated the attacking Hunter when pursuing Barry’s strongest ending.
  • Enrico’s scene was completed.
  • The Hexagonal Crank was collected from the tunnel floor after Enrico.
  • The boulder routes were passed safely.
  • The cave MO Disk was collected from the area exposed by the boulder sequence.
  • The separate pressure-plate puzzle was solved.
  • Doom Book 2 was examined and the Wolf Medal was obtained.
  • Both medals were placed in the courtyard fountain.
  • The fountain drained and the laboratory entrance was reached.
  • The third MO Disk, laboratory processing, three pass codes, power restoration, Tyrant-002, prison access, partner events and final escape Battery remain for later chapters.

Underground Laboratory — Layout, Hazards and Tyrant-002

The original North American PlayStation release concludes with a laboratory route involving three MO Disks, three separate pass-code output machines, one triple-lock prison door, Tyrant-002 and a timed escape. The strongest route requires collecting all three disks, processing them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines, entering the resulting codes at the triple-lock door, releasing the other playable character, preserving the campaign partner, defeating Tyrant-002, collecting the final Battery beside the escape elevator and escaping from the helipad. The pre-Tyrant Lab Key, Wesker’s route-dependent Master Key and post-completion Special Key have different purposes.

1. Enter the laboratory and prepare the final-area route

After placing the Eagle Medal and Wolf Medal in the fountain, descend into the underground laboratory. Use the entrance storage area to arrange a reliable weapon, healing items and several empty inventory slots. You will need room for the third MO Disk, the Lab Key or Power Room Key, the final Battery and other escape-route items.

The three MO Disks are collected in different areas. In the original North American release, one is in the hidden room at the rear of the mansion library, one is in the underground cave storage area behind the second boulder, and one is on the desk outside the Visual Data Room on laboratory B2. Collecting a disk does not produce a pass code; each disk must later be inserted into a separate laboratory output machine.

Chimeras and other laboratory enemies make close corridors dangerous. You do not need to defeat every enemy. Use room transitions to break pursuit, avoid cornering yourself and carry enough healing to survive an unavoidable contact hit or mistake. Save and reorganize before committing to the power and Tyrant route if a typewriter is available.

  • Enter the laboratory after completing the fountain route
  • Confirm that the mansion-library MO Disk was collected
  • Confirm that the cave MO Disk behind the second boulder was collected
  • Leave room for the B2 MO Disk and Lab Key
  • Carry healing and a reliable weapon

2. Unlock the laboratory floors and collect the B2 MO Disk

Reach the laboratory computer and use the credentials supplied by the laboratory files. Unlock B2 first, then unlock B3. The computer gives access to the Visual Data Room route and the lower laboratory sections needed for the disk and power objectives.

On B2, collect the MO Disk from the desk outside the Visual Data Room. Continue into the Visual Data Room and operate the wall panel and switch. The concealed section reveals the Lab Key, also referred to as the Power Room Key in original-release walkthroughs. This key opens the power-side laboratory route before the Tyrant battle.

The Lab Key is not Wesker’s Master Key. The Lab Key is obtained before Tyrant-002 and is used to reach the power and escape systems. The Master Key is a later, route-dependent item associated with Wesker and the post-Tyrant high-security doors.

  • Use the laboratory computer
  • Unlock B2 and B3
  • Collect the B2 MO Disk from outside the Visual Data Room
  • Open the Visual Data Room’s concealed section
  • Collect the Lab Key or Power Room Key
  • Keep the Lab Key distinct from the Master Key

3. Process the three MO Disks at the correct output machines

Process the disks only after all three are available, or carry them through the laboratory in whatever order best suits your inventory. The original North American PlayStation route uses three separate pass-code output machines: one in the Small Library on B3, one in the Morgue on B3 and one in Power Room II.

Use one MO Disk at the output machine in the Small Library to create the first pass code. The Small Library is reached through the B3 laboratory corridors. Do not confuse this room with the mansion’s hidden library, where the first disk was collected.

Use a second MO Disk at the machine in the Morgue. Reaching the Morgue requires solving the laboratory box-and-ladder passage so the vents are covered and the lower opening can be crossed safely. Take the nearby supplies if your inventory permits, use the machine and leave through the opened route.

Use the final MO Disk at the machine in Power Room II. Take the Lab Key through the power-side doors, operate the local controls and move through the Chimera sections until you reach the second power-room area. The output machine there produces the third pass code.

The machines are processing stations, not the prison door. A disk that is merely in your inventory has not generated a usable code. Confirm that all three disks have been consumed and all three pass codes have been produced before returning to the prison-access door.

  • Use one MO Disk at the Small Library output machine
  • Generate the first pass code
  • Use one MO Disk at the Morgue output machine
  • Generate the second pass code
  • Use the final MO Disk at the Power Room II output machine
  • Generate the third pass code
  • Confirm that all three disks were processed

4. Enter all three codes at the triple-lock prison door

Return to the B3 prison-access corridor after processing the three disks. The laboratory has one outer triple-lock prison door for this objective. Examine its control panel and submit all three generated pass codes there.

The three-code door opens the route into the prison section, but it does not automatically open the other character’s actual cell. Continue through the opened route and interact with the cell separately when you reach it. Jill’s coded route releases Chris; Chris’s coded route releases Jill.

If the door still rejects the route, check the output machines rather than searching for another code panel. The Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines each require a separate MO Disk, and collecting all three disks alone is not enough.

  • Return to the outer triple-lock prison door
  • Enter all three generated pass codes
  • Confirm that the prison-access route opens
  • Reach the other playable character’s actual cell
  • Treat the cell interaction as separate from the triple-lock door

5. Restore laboratory power and prepare for Tyrant-002

Use the Lab Key on the power-side access door and continue through the laboratory power route. Operate the local power control, then reach the main power area and activate the terminal that restores power to the laboratory systems. This enables the elevator leading to the Tyrant Development Lab.

Power restoration is separate from MO Disk processing and separate from prison access. The Power Room II output machine produces a pass code; the nearby power controls restore the elevator system. Do not assume that using the output machine alone has powered the elevator.

Before taking the Tyrant elevator, reorganize at the available storage point. Carry healing and a weapon suited to a close-range heavy target. Leave at least one slot available for route-dependent key items. Avoid wasting ammunition on Chimeras if you can safely run past them.

  • Use the Lab Key on the power-side door
  • Operate the local power control
  • Restore the main laboratory power
  • Confirm that the Tyrant elevator is active
  • Prepare healing and a strong weapon

6. Defeat Tyrant-002 and follow the active survivor route

Ride the powered elevator to the Tyrant Development Lab. Tyrant-002 attacks at close range with its claws and can rapidly punish a character trapped against a wall. Keep a clear retreat path, circle through the open part of the room and fire when you can immediately reposition. Powerful ammunition is useful, but do not rely on a single exact weapon or ammunition count.

After Tyrant-002 is defeated, the next sequence depends on the campaign’s survivor conditions. If Barry survived Jill’s campaign or Rebecca survived Chris’s campaign, the partner-assisted emergency route can activate at the appropriate point. This assisted route is separate from MO Disk processing and is the route required for the strongest survivor outcome.

On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key can be supplied after the Tyrant sequence. It opens the Tyrant Development Lab exit and can also open the other character’s actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door when that route provides it. It does not create pass codes, operate the Small Library, Morgue or Power Room II output machines, open the triple-lock door by itself or replace the need to process the disks for the strongest route.

  • Defeat Tyrant-002 in the Tyrant Development Lab
  • Determine whether Barry or Rebecca survived
  • Complete the partner-assisted emergency event when available
  • Use the Master Key on the applicable non-assisted high-security doors
  • Keep the Master Key separate from the Lab Key and Special Key

7. Release the other playable character and complete the emergency route

Use the opened coded prison route to reach the other playable character’s actual cell. Interact with the cell to release that character. The triple-lock door provides access to the prison section, but the cell remains a separate objective and must not be skipped.

If the partner survived, continue with the partner-assisted emergency sequence when the game makes it available. The surviving partner’s actions affect the emergency route, mansion destruction and the strongest ending. They do not change the locations of the MO Disk machines or generate the prison codes.

If the assisted route is unavailable, use Wesker’s Master Key on the supplied flashing emergency-access door when required. On the applicable non-assisted route, the same key can handle the Tyrant Development Lab exit and the actual cell. Do not assume the key is universally available after every partner loss; its appearance depends on the active scenario.

Once the cell and emergency-access objectives are complete, move through the escape corridors. During the alarm sequence, running past enemies is usually safer than stopping to clear every room.

  • Confirm that the triple-lock route is open
  • Reach the other character’s actual cell
  • Release the opposite playable character
  • Complete the partner-assisted emergency event if available
  • Use the Master Key on the applicable flashing emergency-access door
  • Continue to the escape corridor

8. Collect the final Battery and escape from the helipad

During the post-Tyrant escape route, locate the Battery lying beside the escape elevator. This is the final Battery and is different from the earlier courtyard Battery used to power the lift and waterfall route. It is collected after the Tyrant and prison or emergency-access objectives, not before the Tyrant battle.

Install the Battery in the socket beside the escape elevator. The emergency countdown begins once the escape systems are activated. Move through the route without unnecessary detours, reach the helipad and use the Flare at the marked signaling point to summon Brad.

The helipad Tyrant is the final combat encounter. Keep moving around the open landing area and avoid being pinned against the elevator or boundary. When Brad drops the Rocket Launcher, pick it up immediately and fire it at the Tyrant. The helicopter escape completes the campaign once the final Tyrant has been defeated.

The strongest original North American PlayStation completion requires the intended partner survival, the other playable character’s release, the post-Tyrant Battery installation and helicopter escape. The Special Key is separate post-completion costume-closet content and is not used for the laboratory codes, output machines, prison door, actual cell, emergency access or final Battery.

  • Collect the final Battery beside the escape elevator
  • Install the Battery
  • Reach the helipad before the countdown expires
  • Use the Flare to signal Brad
  • Collect Brad’s Rocket Launcher
  • Defeat the helipad Tyrant
  • Escape by helicopter
  • Confirm that the intended survivors escaped
  • Keep the Special Key separate from active laboratory progression

Bosses and Heavy Targets — Hunters, Yawn, Plant 42 and Tyrant-002

The original North American PlayStation release is safest when major fights are treated as positioning problems rather than ammunition contests. Before entering a dangerous room, visit an item box, remove spent keys and documents, carry a dependable weapon and healing, and leave space for the next required item. Fixed camera angles make retreat planning essential: face the direction you intend to run, avoid backing into walls and use doorways to reset enemy positions. The strongest ending also depends on separate laboratory and survivor objectives. Collect all three MO Disks, process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines, enter the three generated pass codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, release the other playable character through the actual cell route, complete the applicable emergency sequence, collect the post-Tyrant Battery beside the escape elevator and defeat the helipad Tyrant with Brad’s Rocket Launcher.

Prepare before heavy encounters

Use the nearest safe-room item box before a boss or a Hunter-heavy return trip. Store unnecessary keys, files and puzzle pieces, but keep your weapon, ammunition, healing and at least one open inventory slot. The laboratory climax becomes awkward if every slot is filled before the escape sequence.

Save at sensible milestones with a typewriter and Ink Ribbon rather than after every room. Good save points include before the Attic Yawn, before Plant 42, after returning from the Guardhouse and before the laboratory climax. These saves provide clean retries without forcing a long backtrack.

The original PlayStation controls use fixed camera angles and directional movement instead of modern free aiming. Face toward your retreat before firing, avoid backing into walls and use doorways to break contact. In cramped rooms, preserving an exit is usually more valuable than attempting one extra shot.

  • Store unrelated keys and documents.
  • Carry healing and leave inventory space.
  • Save before major encounters.
  • Plan a retreat before attacking.

Hunters: use choke points and controlled retreats

Hunters become regular threats after the Guardhouse sequence. Fight them near doorways, stair landings, corners or other landmarks that give you a predictable escape. Kill Hunters blocking required routes, but bypass optional enemies whenever the room layout permits a safe pass.

The Shotgun is a dependable general-purpose weapon at close range. Let a Hunter enter effective range, fire, then immediately reassess its position. A Handgun can finish a weakened Hunter, but do not conserve ammunition so aggressively that you accept a leap or claw hit. Against two or more Hunters, focus on one target and reposition after every shot.

Do not knife a healthy Hunter. Use the knife only as a last resort against an incapacitated enemy when the camera clearly shows that no second Hunter can attack from the side. If a shot misses, retreat through a doorway or around a corner instead of squeezing past a live Hunter in a narrow corridor.

  • Use doorways and stair landings as choke points.
  • Prefer the Shotgun at reliable range.
  • Focus on one Hunter before changing targets.
  • Clear mandatory blockers and bypass optional Hunters.
  • Avoid knife attacks against healthy Hunters.

First Yawn: the Attic encounter

The first Yawn encounter occurs in the mansion Attic. Move as soon as control returns and keep away from the snake’s head. Circle around the room’s central obstruction, fire only when you have a clear opening and retreat whenever Yawn cuts off your route. Do not let the snake pin you against a wall or trap you between its body and a camera boundary.

Defeating this Yawn is not required for progression. If ammunition is limited, evade it and leave when the encounter permits. If you attack, fire while moving away instead of standing still for repeated shots. When Yawn retreats, search the recess and collect the Moon Crest before leaving.

Yawn can poison the protagonist. If poisoned, complete the available Serum sequence before beginning a long exploration route. For Chris, later Rebecca events depend on earlier Rebecca and Richard conditions as well as the later conversation choice. Jill has no Rebecca branch.

  • Move immediately when control returns.
  • Keep Yawn away from walls and corners.
  • Collect the Moon Crest from the retreat recess.
  • Complete the Serum sequence if poisoned.
  • Use evasion when ammunition is limited.

Later Yawn: the upstairs Piano Room or Music Room

The later original-release Yawn event is triggered by examining the piano in the upstairs Piano Room, also called the Music Room in some guides. It is not the remake’s Library or Ballroom battle. Carry healing and a strong weapon before examining the piano, then circle the room’s perimeter while creating distance.

If a camera angle loses sight of Yawn, reposition through a safer angle instead of firing blindly. Do not stand beneath the snake or trade contact damage for hurried shots. Complete the event so the floor opening and the route toward the tomb become available.

As Jill, examine the opening and follow Barry’s rope event. If the rope breaks, remain in the tomb area until Barry returns with a replacement rope and speak to him before continuing. Leaving during this interval can forfeit the favorable Barry route. Chris follows his own Rebecca sequence and does not use Jill’s Barry checks.

  • Trigger the event by examining the upstairs piano.
  • Bring healing before examining it.
  • Circle instead of standing directly in front of Yawn.
  • Complete the floor-opening sequence.
  • As Jill, wait for Barry’s replacement rope.

Plant 42: follow the branch that actually activated

Plant 42 is stationary, but its vines and falling ceiling attacks punish players who stand still. Stay near the edge of the room, fire at the exposed plant mass and move after each attack. Watch for falling dust as a warning that ceiling debris is about to drop. Heal before another hit would leave you in danger, and do not remain beneath the hanging growth.

Jill can defeat Plant 42 directly or make V-JOLT and apply it to the basement root system first. V-JOLT is optional for Jill. After applying it, return to Plant 42’s room and finish the weakened encounter with a suitable firearm. If fighting directly, maintain a loop around the room’s outer boundary and attack during openings.

For Chris, answering Yes in the relevant Rebecca conversation is the intended setup for Rebecca’s V-JOLT route, while No is the intended direct-Plant-42 route. The answer alone is not a guarantee. Earlier Rebecca and Richard events, the applicable Serum sequence, timing and other event conditions determine whether the expected Rebecca scene is available. Do not search for a missing V-JOLT event solely because Yes was selected.

When Rebecca’s event is active, control her and complete the V-JOLT chemical puzzle. Carry the finished chemical to the basement root area and apply it there. Control then returns to Chris, who must enter the Plant 42 room and defeat the weakened plant. Rebecca’s assistance weakens the encounter; it does not replace Chris’s final fight.

If the active event leaves Chris to fight directly, use the Shotgun, Grenade Launcher or another strong available weapon and maintain a retreat loop. The later Hunter rescue is a separate checkpoint. The preserved Yes-oriented route normally leads to Rebecca’s rescue in the upstairs Small Library, while a No-oriented or alternate active route can place the event in the Serum-area or adjacent medical route. Follow the cue and location produced by the actual run.

  • For Jill, choose direct combat or optional self-made V-JOLT.
  • For Chris, treat Yes or No as branch setup, not a guarantee.
  • Confirm that Rebecca’s event actually activates before expecting V-JOLT.
  • If Rebecca makes V-JOLT, apply it to the root system and finish Plant 42 as Chris.
  • If Chris fights directly, use a strong weapon and keep moving.
  • Respond to the Hunter rescue at the location identified by the active event.
  • Take the Helmet Key after Plant 42.

Laboratory MO Disks and the first Tyrant-002 fight

The original-release laboratory climax uses three MO Disks and three separate output machines. The first MO Disk is in the hidden rear area of the mansion Library, the second is in the underground cave storage area beyond the boulder route and the third is on a desk outside the Visual Data Room in the laboratory.

Process one MO Disk at each correct B3 output machine: the Small Library, the Morgue and Power Room II. The Small Library machine produces one pass code, the Morgue machine produces another and the Power Room II machine produces the third. These machines are separate from the prison lock and must all be used.

After all three pass codes have been generated, take them to the laboratory’s outer triple-lock prison-access door and enter all three there. This opens the coded prison-access route. It does not by itself complete the actual cell interaction, and it does not replace the emergency-access stage.

The pre-Tyrant Lab Key, also called the Power Room Key in walkthrough terminology, is obtained through the Visual Data Room route. It opens the laboratory power route and permits access toward Tyrant-002. Keep it separate from the route-dependent Master Key and the post-completion Special Key.

For the first Tyrant-002 fight, remain outside claw range and fire while moving laterally. The Colt Python, Grenade Launcher or another powerful weapon can shorten the fight, but do not depend on a fixed shot count. If Tyrant closes in, create space before firing again and heal before another hit leaves you in danger. Being trapped against a wall or tank is more dangerous than spending another round.

  • Collect all three original-release MO Disks.
  • Process them at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • Enter all three generated codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Keep the Lab or Power Room Key separate from the Master Key.
  • Defeat the first laboratory Tyrant-002 without relying on a fixed damage count.

Actual cell, emergency access and partner conditions

After the outer triple-lock prison-access door has been opened, follow the coded route to the other playable character’s actual cell. The triple-lock is the coded access stage; enter the actual cell and perform the separate interaction that releases Chris or Jill.

Partner survival is a separate ending condition. If Barry or Rebecca survived the relevant story checks, continue with that partner and complete the partner-assisted self-destruct sequence at its story checkpoint. This supports the mansion-destruction ending, but it does not create the three pass codes and does not substitute for the actual cell interaction.

On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s active-game Master Key may be supplied during the laboratory climax. When that route provides it, use the Master Key for the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell and the applicable flashing emergency-access door. It is not a pass-code item, does not operate any MO Disk output machine and is not mandatory on a partner-assisted route. Its availability depends on the scenario’s events and partner outcome; do not assume every partner loss automatically produces it.

The Special Key is a separate post-completion costume-closet reward. It cannot be used as the active-game Master Key and does not open the laboratory’s coded prison route, actual cell, emergency-access door or escape-elevator route.

  • Open the coded prison route with all three generated codes.
  • Perform the actual cell interaction.
  • Complete the partner-assisted self-destruct sequence when available.
  • Use the active-game Master Key only when the applicable non-assisted route supplies it.
  • Do not substitute the Special Key for the Master Key.

Post-Tyrant Battery and helipad Tyrant

After Tyrant-002, the applicable partner event, the prison stage and the actual cell and emergency-access stages, follow the escape corridor. The final Battery is beside the escape elevator in this post-Tyrant area. It is separate from the earlier Battery used at the courtyard lift and is not collected from Power Room II before the boss.

Pick up the Battery, install it beside the escape elevator and continue through the timed escape. Take the Flare from the nearby supply box and use it on the helipad to signal Brad. Keep moving around the landing area while waiting for the helicopter.

The helipad Tyrant is separate from laboratory Tyrant-002. Avoid charges and claw swipes while maintaining a clear route around the landing area. When Brad drops the Rocket Launcher, collect and equip it, then fire when Tyrant is in a clear line. Do not waste time trying to finish this timed encounter with ordinary weapons.

After the rocket connects, move directly to the helicopter. Mansion destruction requires the partner-assisted self-destruct route. Releasing the opposite playable character is separately required for the strongest survivor result.

  • Complete the prison, cell and applicable emergency-access stages.
  • Collect the final Battery beside the escape elevator.
  • Install the Battery.
  • Use the Flare on the helipad.
  • Collect Brad’s Rocket Launcher.
  • Defeat the helipad Tyrant and board the helicopter.

Recovery after failure

If Hunters consume too much health or ammunition, retreat to the nearest safe room and reorganize at the item box. Kill enemies guarding required doors or unavoidable return paths, but bypass optional Hunters whenever possible.

If Yawn or Plant 42 leaves you in poor condition, reload the preceding milestone save and change one factor: evade the Attic Yawn, widen the upstairs Piano Room retreat loop, use Jill’s optional V-JOLT route or verify which Chris Rebecca branch actually activated before returning to Plant 42.

If Tyrant defeats you, rebuild the inventory for both the laboratory fight and the helipad. Keep healing available and avoid filling every slot before the escape corridor. Confirm that all three MO Disks were processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II, then confirm that all three resulting codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door before attempting the prison stage.

If Rebecca assisted with Plant 42, do not mark her safe until the later Hunter event has triggered and the attacking Hunter has been killed at the location shown by that event. If Barry or Rebecca is unavailable, the strongest assisted ending is lost, but ordinary MO Disk processing, triple-lock prison access, actual cell interaction and the applicable emergency-access route remain separate objectives. Use the Master Key only if the non-assisted route supplies it.

The Special Key cannot repair a failed partner route because it is not the active-game Master Key. It is only a post-completion costume-closet reward.

  • Reload the last sensible typewriter save after death.
  • Reorganize supplies before retrying.
  • Preserve healing for both Tyrant encounters.
  • Verify all three MO Disks were processed at separate output machines.
  • Verify all three codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Respond to Rebecca’s actual Hunter event if it appears.
  • Use the partner-assisted route when available.
  • Collect the final Battery beside the escape elevator after Tyrant-002.

Before you move on

  • The Attic Yawn has been escaped or defeated and the Moon Crest recovered.
  • The upstairs Piano Room Yawn has been dealt with and the floor-opening route completed.
  • For Jill’s favorable route, Barry returned with the replacement rope.
  • Plant 42 was resolved through Jill’s selected method or the Chris event actually activated by the run.
  • If Chris received Rebecca’s V-JOLT event, Rebecca made and applied V-JOLT and Chris finished Plant 42.
  • If Chris fought Plant 42 directly, Chris defeated it without searching for an untriggered V-JOLT scene.
  • If Rebecca’s later Hunter rescue triggered, the attacking Hunter was killed at the active event location.
  • All three original-release MO Disks were collected.
  • The three MO Disks were processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • All three generated pass codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Laboratory Tyrant-002 was defeated.
  • The applicable partner survived and activated the assisted self-destruct sequence for the strongest route, or the applicable non-assisted route supplied the active-game Master Key.
  • The coded prison-access route was opened.
  • The other playable character was released through the actual cell interaction.
  • The partner-assisted emergency route was completed when available, or the active-game Master Key was used for the applicable non-assisted Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell and flashing emergency-access door.
  • The Lab or Power Room Key was kept distinct from the Master Key.
  • The post-Tyrant Battery was collected beside the escape elevator and installed.
  • The Flare was used on the helipad.
  • Brad’s Rocket Launcher was collected and used to defeat the final helipad Tyrant.
  • The protagonist reached the helicopter and the mansion was destroyed when the partner-assisted self-destruct route was completed. The Special Key, if awarded after qualifying completion, was treated only as a later costume-closet reward.

Partner Events, Survivor Conditions and How Endings Branch

The strongest original North American PlayStation ending depends on two separate parts of the campaign. First, preserve the campaign partner: Barry in Jill’s scenario or Rebecca in Chris’s. Second, complete the laboratory rescue route independently by collecting all three MO Disks, processing them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines, entering the three generated pass codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, and opening the other playable character’s actual cell. Partner survival activates the assisted emergency and self-destruct route. It does not process disks or generate codes. On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key can open the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door. The Special Key awarded after completion is a separate costume-closet reward.

Separate the ending conditions

Treat the ending as a chain of independent checks rather than one final decision. During the mansion, Guardhouse and cave sections, preserve Barry or Rebecca through the events specific to that character. Later, complete the laboratory rescue sequence even if the partner survived; partner survival does not automatically release the other playable character.

Collect three MO Disks during the campaign. In the original North American PlayStation release, their locations are the hidden rear section of the mansion’s second-floor Library, the small storage area behind the second underground boulder, and the desk outside the Visual Data Room on laboratory B2.

Carry the disks through the laboratory and use one at each of the three output machines: the Small Library, the Morgue and Power Room II. Each machine produces one pass code. The three machines are not prison doors, and simply carrying three disks is not enough.

Take the three generated codes to the outer triple-lock prison-access door. Enter all three codes there to open the route toward the holding area. After reaching the other playable character’s cell, perform the separate cell interaction. Do not confuse the coded entrance with the actual cell door.

After Tyrant-002, partner survival determines whether the assisted emergency and self-destruct sequence is available. On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key is supplied as a route-dependent alternative. It can open the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door. It does not operate the three output machines or create the pass codes.

Once the cell and emergency requirements are complete, collect the post-Tyrant Battery beside the escape elevator. Install it to start the final countdown, reach the helipad, use the Flare and take Brad’s Rocket Launcher when it arrives. Defeat the helipad Tyrant and escape by helicopter.

  • The campaign partner survives the applicable story events.
  • All three MO Disks are collected.
  • The disks are processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • All three generated codes are entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Tyrant-002 is defeated.
  • The other playable character’s actual cell is opened separately, either through the coded route or with the Master Key on the applicable non-assisted route.
  • The partner-assisted emergency route is completed when available, or the applicable Master Key route is completed.
  • The post-Tyrant Battery is collected beside the escape elevator.
  • The Battery is installed and the final helipad Tyrant is defeated.

Jill route: preserve Barry

Barry’s survival is determined by several events. At the early shotgun trap, allow Barry to rescue Jill after the trap activates. If that rescue does not occur, the favorable Barry route may already be lost, so do not assume that a later conversation can repair it.

During the later upstairs Piano Room sequence, defeat or avoid the Yawn as necessary, enter the floor opening and wait for Barry to return with a stronger rope after the first rope breaks. Do not descend through the grave ladder before he returns. Waiting for Barry is the required safe choice for the strongest route.

In the caves, accept Barry’s assistance and remain with him through the cave route. When the cave questions appear, choose a response pattern that keeps Barry involved, then take the left-hand route at the cave split. Do not separate from him and continue directly to Enrico. If Jill reaches Enrico while Barry has been left behind, Barry’s later survival and the assisted ending route can be lost.

After the caves, continue normally through the laboratory. Collect the mansion Library MO Disk, the underground storage-area MO Disk and the laboratory B2 MO Disk. Process them at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II, then enter all three resulting codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.

Use the opened route to reach Chris’s actual cell and interact with it. This cell objective is separate from the three-code door. If Barry survived, continue through Barry’s assisted emergency sequence after Tyrant-002. Barry helps activate the self-destruct progression, allowing Jill, Chris and Barry to escape together.

If Barry was lost, the laboratory and coded prison route remain playable. On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key can open the Tyrant-lab exit, Chris’s actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door. It does not replace MO Disk processing or the three-code door.

  • Barry rescues Jill at the shotgun trap.
  • Jill waits for Barry’s replacement rope.
  • Jill stays with Barry through the cave route and uses the safe left-hand route.
  • All three MO Disks are processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • All three codes are entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Chris’s actual cell is opened.
  • Barry’s assisted emergency route activates.
  • The post-Tyrant Battery is installed.
  • The helipad Tyrant is defeated and Jill, Chris and Barry escape together.

Chris route: preserve Rebecca without mixing branches

Chris must choose one valid Rebecca plan and then respond to the later event that actually activates. The Yes response at the relevant Rebecca conversation is the intended setup for Rebecca’s V-JOLT assistance. The No response leads toward the direct Plant 42 route. Neither answer alone guarantees the later rescue room, because the earlier Richard and Rebecca events affect which branch remains active.

On the Yes-oriented route, Chris reaches Plant 42 and Rebecca can prepare and apply V-JOLT if the earlier prerequisites were preserved. Chris then finishes the weakened Plant 42 and takes the Helmet Key. If Rebecca does not appear, do not wait indefinitely or assume the save is broken; defeat Plant 42 directly and continue with the route present in the game.

On the No-oriented route, Chris defeats Plant 42 directly without Rebecca’s V-JOLT sequence. The later Rebecca danger event can occur in the Serum-area route rather than the Library route. Follow the active cue after returning to the mansion instead of traveling to a room based only on the answer given earlier.

When the Hunter attack on Rebecca activates, go immediately to the indicated room and defeat the Hunter. Rebecca’s assistance at Plant 42 does not by itself prove that she will survive. If the active event is in the Library, protect her there. If the active event is in the Serum-area route, go there instead and resolve that encounter. Leaving the active room can result in Rebecca’s death.

After preserving Rebecca, complete the laboratory sequence. Collect and process the three MO Disks at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II. Enter the three generated codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, then reach Jill’s actual cell and interact with it.

After Tyrant-002, Rebecca’s survival enables the assisted emergency and self-destruct route. If Rebecca was lost, use Wesker’s Master Key when the non-assisted route supplies it. It can open the Tyrant-lab exit, Jill’s actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door on that route, but it does not replace the output machines or the pass-code sequence.

  • The applicable Richard and Rebecca setup is preserved.
  • Chris selects either the Yes-oriented V-JOLT plan or the No-oriented direct-combat plan.
  • The active Plant 42 route is completed.
  • Chris responds to the later Hunter event in its actual location.
  • Rebecca survives the Hunter event.
  • All three MO Disks are processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • All three codes are entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Jill’s actual cell is opened separately.
  • Rebecca’s assisted emergency route activates.
  • The post-Tyrant Battery is collected and installed.
  • Chris, Jill and Rebecca escape together.

Laboratory order and route alternatives

Use this order when checking the final section. First collect all three MO Disks. Second, process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II. Third, enter the three generated pass codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door. Fourth, defeat Tyrant-002. Fifth, complete the partner-assisted emergency route if Barry or Rebecca survived.

After Tyrant-002, the route can divide. With the surviving partner, follow the assisted emergency and self-destruct progression. On the applicable non-assisted route, take Wesker’s Master Key when it is provided. Use it for the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door. The key is not a code-generation item and does not operate an MO Disk terminal.

The coded prison route and the actual cell remain distinct even when using the normal strongest-ending sequence. The codes open the outer access door; the player must still reach and interact with the opposite character’s cell. If the Master Key route is active, the key can open the actual cell directly, but this does not change the function of the three MO Disks or the outer triple-lock door.

After the cell and emergency route are complete, follow the escape corridor to the Battery beside the escape elevator. This Battery is not the earlier Battery used at the courtyard lift. Install it, begin the countdown, reach the helipad and use the Flare. Brad’s Rocket Launcher defeats the final Tyrant; the partner’s presence affects the ending sequence, not the weapon’s use.

  • The three disks are processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • The three generated codes are entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • The actual cell is opened as a separate objective.
  • Tyrant-002 is defeated before the final escape Battery is collected.
  • The surviving partner’s assisted route is completed when available.
  • The Master Key is used only on the applicable non-assisted route for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell and flashing emergency-access door.
  • The final Battery is collected beside the escape elevator.
  • The helipad Tyrant is defeated with Brad’s Rocket Launcher.

Best-ending completion check

For Jill, verify the shotgun-trap rescue, the replacement-rope event and Barry’s survival through the cave route. Then verify that all three MO Disks were processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II, all three codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, Chris’s actual cell was opened and Tyrant-002 was defeated. Continue through Barry’s assisted emergency route, collect and install the Battery beside the escape elevator, defeat the helipad Tyrant and confirm that Jill, Chris and Barry escape together.

For Chris, verify that one valid Rebecca branch was preserved and that the later active Hunter event was resolved. The Yes-oriented branch may lead to Rebecca’s V-JOLT assistance and normally connects to the Library rescue event; the No-oriented branch uses direct Plant 42 combat and may connect to the Serum-area rescue event. Follow the event actually triggered. Then process all three MO Disks, enter all three codes, open Jill’s actual cell, defeat Tyrant-002, complete Rebecca’s assisted emergency route, install the post-Tyrant Battery and confirm that Chris, Jill and Rebecca escape together.

If Barry or Rebecca is lost, the run can still reach the laboratory, process the three disks, enter the codes and release the opposite character. The assisted partner route and strongest group ending are unavailable, however. On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key can provide access to the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell and flashing emergency-access door. The Special Key, if awarded after completion, is only for the costume closet and is not evidence that the laboratory rescue route was completed.

  • The protagonist’s partner survives the relevant campaign events.
  • All three MO Disks are processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • All three codes are entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Tyrant-002 is defeated.
  • The opposite character’s actual cell is opened.
  • The assisted emergency route activates on the strongest run.
  • The post-Tyrant Battery is collected beside the escape elevator.
  • The Battery is installed.
  • The final Tyrant is destroyed with Brad’s Rocket Launcher.
  • The protagonist, opposite playable character and surviving partner escape together.

Before you move on

  • Jill’s strongest route is complete when Barry survives the shotgun-trap, replacement-rope and cave checks; the three MO Disks are processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II; the three codes are entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door; Chris’s actual cell is opened; Tyrant-002 is defeated; Barry’s assisted emergency route activates; the Battery beside the escape elevator is installed; the helipad Tyrant is destroyed; and Jill, Chris and Barry escape together.
  • Chris’s strongest route is complete when one valid Rebecca branch is selected, the later active Hunter event is resolved, the three MO Disks are processed at Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II, the three codes are entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, Jill’s actual cell is opened, Tyrant-002 is defeated, Rebecca’s assisted emergency route activates, the final Battery is installed, the helipad Tyrant is destroyed and Chris, Jill and Rebecca escape together.
  • If the partner is lost, the normal laboratory route remains available, but the assisted partner sequence and strongest group ending are not. Use Wesker’s Master Key only when the applicable non-assisted route supplies it, and use it for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell and flashing emergency-access door.
  • The Special Key is a separate post-completion costume-closet reward. It is unrelated to the MO Disk terminals, pass codes, prison-access door, actual cell, emergency access or final Battery.

Final Escape — The Last Sequence, Destroying the Mansion, and Exiting

Complete the original North American PlayStation laboratory escape by processing all three MO Disks, entering the resulting codes at the outer prison lock, defeating Tyrant-002, releasing the other playable character, completing the active emergency route, installing the post-Tyrant Battery and destroying the helipad Tyrant with Brad’s Rocket Launcher.

1. Finish the three MO Disk terminals

Before continuing through the final laboratory route, make sure all three MO Disks have been collected. In the original PlayStation release, the disks come from the mansion’s hidden Library route, the underground cave route after the boulder objective, and the laboratory B2 area near the Visual Data Room route.

Use the three disks at three separate Pass Code Output machines. The first machine is in the Small Library on laboratory B3. The second is in the Morgue. The third is in Power Room II. Each machine consumes one MO Disk and produces one pass code. The Small Library terminal is not interchangeable with the other two, so do not carry all three disks to one location.

Record or remember that all three codes have been produced before attempting the prison route. If one terminal does not respond, check that you are using the original laboratory rooms rather than a similarly named room from a remake or Director’s Cut guide.

  • All three original-release MO Disks were collected.
  • One disk was processed in the Small Library.
  • One disk was processed in the Morgue.
  • One disk was processed in Power Room II.
  • Three pass codes were generated.

2. Restore laboratory power and prepare for Tyrant-002

Use the Visual Data Room computer and the laboratory access route to open the lower laboratory floors. Obtain the pre-Tyrant Lab Key, sometimes described in guides as the Power Room Key, from the original Visual Data Room progression. This key is separate from the later Master Key obtained on applicable routes after the Tyrant encounter.

Continue through the power-room section and activate the laboratory power controls. Reach Power Room III and use its elevator control so the route to the Tyrant area becomes available. The Power Room II output machine must already have been used if you are following the complete code checklist.

Before entering the Tyrant Development Lab, heal, equip a reliable weapon and leave inventory space for the Master Key or other escape-route items. Chimera encounters can usually be avoided by moving through doors and using corners rather than stopping to fight every enemy.

  • The pre-Tyrant Lab Key was obtained.
  • Laboratory power was restored.
  • The laboratory elevator was activated.
  • The three output machines were completed.

3. Defeat Tyrant-002 and collect the applicable key

Enter the Tyrant Development Lab and defeat Tyrant-002. Keep moving around the room and fire after Tyrant commits to a charge or claw swing. Shotgun ammunition, grenade-launcher ammunition or Magnum rounds are effective, but avoid standing directly in front of him. Keep at least one healing item for the escape route.

If you are pursuing the strongest ending, the campaign partner must still be alive: Barry for Jill or Rebecca for Chris. A surviving partner changes the emergency sequence after the cell route, but does not generate the MO Disk codes and does not replace any output machine.

On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key becomes available after the Tyrant encounter. Collect it when the route supplies it. It opens the Tyrant-lab exit and can also open the actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door on that route. It is not the pre-Tyrant Lab Key, not an output-machine item and not the post-completion Special Key.

  • Tyrant-002 was defeated.
  • The campaign partner survived if the strongest ending is intended.
  • The Master Key was collected when supplied by the active route.

4. Enter the three codes at the outer prison lock

Reach the B3 prison-access door with three separate lock mechanisms. This is the single outer triple-lock door for the three MO Disk pass codes. Enter all three generated codes there. The codes are produced at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines; they are not found on the Master Key and are not entered at three different prison doors.

Opening this triple-lock door gives access to the prison route. It does not automatically release the other playable character. Continue through the opened route until you reach the actual holding cell.

  • The outer B3 triple-lock door was reached.
  • All three generated pass codes were entered.
  • The coded prison route opened.
  • The outer door was not confused with the actual cell.

5. Open the actual cell and complete the active emergency route

Follow the coded prison route to the actual cell. Jill must open Chris’s cell, while Chris must open Jill’s cell. Examine the cell door and complete the interaction; merely reaching the prison hall or seeing the trapped character does not finish the rescue.

After the cell is opened, return toward the laboratory exit. When Barry survived Jill’s required events, Barry’s assisted emergency route becomes available. When Rebecca survived Chris’s applicable events, Rebecca’s assisted route becomes available. Follow the partner’s instructions and complete the emergency-access sequence rather than leaving the laboratory immediately.

If the partner-assisted route is unavailable, use Wesker’s Master Key on the applicable flashing emergency-access door after completing the Tyrant-lab exit. This is a route-dependent alternative. It does not replace the three pass codes, the outer triple-lock door or the actual-cell interaction.

  • The coded prison route was completed.
  • The other playable character’s actual cell was opened.
  • The other character was released.
  • The partner-assisted emergency route was completed when active, or the applicable Master Key doors were opened on the non-assisted route.

6. Retrieve the post-Tyrant Battery

Continue through the opened emergency route toward the escape elevator. Brad’s radio message confirms that the final escape is underway. The post-Tyrant Battery is on the floor beside the escape elevator. Pick it up and place it in the elevator’s empty socket.

Do not confuse this Battery with the earlier Battery used to power the courtyard lift. The final Battery is not collected before Tyrant-002 and is not located in Power Room II. If it is not present, verify that Tyrant was defeated, the prison route was completed, the actual cell was opened and the required emergency-access event was triggered.

Once the Battery is installed, ride the elevator without detouring for optional rooms. The original release gives the escape sequence a short self-destruct countdown, so heal and organize equipment before this point rather than stopping during the timed run.

  • The post-Tyrant Battery beside the escape elevator was collected.
  • The Battery was installed in the elevator socket.
  • Brad’s radio message occurred.
  • The escape elevator was activated.

7. Signal Brad and defeat the helipad Tyrant

At the helipad, collect the Flare and use it in the open signaling area. Wait for Brad’s helicopter to respond. Tyrant-002 then appears for the final encounter when the self-destruct route is active.

Keep moving around the helipad and maintain room to retreat. Use carried weapons if necessary, but do not waste all healing items before Brad drops the Rocket Launcher. When the countdown is nearly complete, Brad drops the launcher onto the helipad. Pick it up, equip it and fire at Tyrant. The supplied launcher is the intended finishing weapon.

After Tyrant is destroyed, board Brad’s helicopter. The strongest survivor result requires the other playable character and the campaign partner to have survived, in addition to completing the prison, emergency and Battery steps. If a survivor condition was missed, the game can still end successfully, but the escaping group and mansion-destruction result will differ.

  • The Flare was collected and used.
  • Brad’s helicopter responded.
  • The helipad Tyrant appeared.
  • Brad delivered the Rocket Launcher.
  • The Rocket Launcher destroyed Tyrant.
  • The helicopter escape completed before the countdown expired.
  • The mansion was destroyed when the self-destruct route was active.

Before you move on

  • All three original-release MO Disks were collected.
  • The disks were processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines.
  • All three pass codes were generated.
  • All three codes were entered at the outer B3 triple-lock prison door.
  • The pre-Tyrant Lab Key was obtained and used.
  • Laboratory power and the Tyrant elevator were activated.
  • Tyrant-002 was defeated.
  • The actual cell was opened and the other playable character was released.
  • The partner-assisted emergency route was completed when available, or the applicable Master Key route was completed.
  • The post-Tyrant Battery beside the escape elevator was collected and installed.
  • The Flare was used at the helipad.
  • Brad delivered the Rocket Launcher.
  • The helipad Tyrant was destroyed.
  • The helicopter escape completed before the countdown expired.
  • The mansion was destroyed when the self-destruct route was active.

Recovering from Mistakes — Reloading, Re-routing and Inventory Recovery

A failed boss attempt, missed item or lost partner does not always require restarting the North American original PlayStation campaign. Reload from a useful typewriter save, establish a temporary item-box base and handle partner survival, MO Disk processing, triple-lock access, Tyrant-002, emergency access, cell release and final escape as separate checkpoints. Chris’s Rebecca route must follow the branch and Hunter event that actually activated. The earlier courtyard-lift Battery and the separate post-Tyrant escape Battery must never be confused.

Reload from a useful typewriter save

After dying before a boss, puzzle or route transition, reload the latest typewriter save that leaves the objective reachable. Every save consumes an Ink Ribbon, so avoid creating several nearly identical saves during one safe stretch. A practical pattern is to save before a major boss or partner event, then save again after the objective is complete and you have reached the next secure area.

Open the nearby item box before leaving. Carry only the weapon, ammunition, healing item and key or puzzle item required for the retry. Store documents, duplicate weapons and unrelated keys. Keep at least one empty inventory slot because the successful route may provide a key item, Battery, Flare or weapon. If the failed attempt left you in Caution or Danger, heal before making the return trip.

  • Reload the last useful typewriter save.
  • Check health before leaving the safe room.
  • Carry only equipment needed for the failed objective.
  • Keep at least one open inventory slot.
  • Save again after the objective and the next safe transition.

Build a forward base for a boss or puzzle retry

Use the closest safe room and item box as a temporary forward base instead of repeatedly crossing the mansion from the original pickup room. Stage supplies for the current section separately from optional weapons, laboratory items and escape equipment.

Carry one primary weapon, suitable ammunition and healing. A reserve weapon is useful when inventory space allows, but do not fill every slot before collecting a required item. If the first attempt left you cornered, change your positioning rather than repeating the same attack pattern. Against Hunters, avoid fighting in the middle of a long corridor when a doorway or wider room gives you more reaction space. If you are retrieving an item, clear only enemies that block the route and skip optional detours when ammunition is scarce.

  • Use the nearest available item box.
  • Stage one primary weapon and a reserve option when practical.
  • Carry suitable healing.
  • Plan the retreat route before entering the room.
  • Leave space for the next key item or reward.

Recover a missed mandatory item

Confirm that the object is actually required before making a long return trip. A mandatory item left in an accessible mansion, Guardhouse, underground or laboratory room can usually be recovered with a focused route. Divide long journeys at safe rooms and carry only what is needed to survive the return.

The mansion becomes more dangerous after the Guardhouse because Hunters replace many earlier enemies. Corridors that were safe on the first visit may require a different approach. Pause after fixed-camera transitions, keep the weapon ready in narrow halls and identify the nearest door or room boundary before engaging. If the object is optional, compare its value with the ammunition and healing required to reach it. Skipping an optional weapon or supply pickup is often the correct recovery decision.

  • Confirm that the item is mandatory.
  • Use safe rooms to divide the return trip.
  • Carry a free inventory slot.
  • Expect Hunters in the post-Guardhouse mansion.
  • Skip optional rewards that cost more resources than they provide.

Restore Barry’s survival route as Jill

Barry’s favorable outcome depends on separate events. After the later upstairs Yawn encounter, Jill falls through the opening and Barry drops a rope. Remain in the lower area until he returns with a replacement rope, then climb out. Leaving before he returns removes the favorable continuation of this event.

When Jill later meets Barry in the underground caves, follow the favorable route and remain with him through the cave sequence. These cave choices are separate from the earlier rope event, so completing only one check is not enough.

After moving forward, listen for the gunshot from Barry’s direction. Turn back immediately to the area he entered and defeat the Hunter attacking him. Jill can continue if Barry dies, but the partner-assisted route and strongest partner ending are lost. Reload from before the decisive event if Barry’s survival matters.

  • Wait for Barry to return with the replacement rope.
  • Use the favorable cave route and remain with him.
  • Return immediately after hearing the gunshot.
  • Defeat the Hunter attacking Barry.
  • Reload from before the event if Barry dies.

Recover Rebecca’s route as Chris

Do not determine Chris’s recovery route from the Serum Room Yes or No choice alone. Record that choice, then verify what happened earlier with Rebecca and Richard. Those earlier events and the active story trigger determine whether the V-JOLT sequence and later Hunter rescue are available in the original PlayStation scenario.

If the run activated Rebecca’s V-JOLT sequence, allow Rebecca to complete the chemical task and let Chris finish the weakened Plant 42. This does not by itself prove that Rebecca will survive the later mansion return. When the Hunter attack cue appears, go immediately to the location used by the active event. In the intended preserved V-JOLT setup, this is normally the Library-side rescue event.

If the run activated direct Plant 42 combat instead, do not make a V-JOLT recovery trip. Defeat Plant 42 with Chris’s available weapons and respond to the later Rebecca attack cue in the Serum-area or adjacent medical route when that is the event the game has activated. Do not substitute the Library route unless Rebecca’s actual cue sends you there.

If Rebecca is not present at the expected location, do not wait indefinitely or assume that the branch has failed at that moment. Check another valid event location only when the preceding actions support it, and reload from before the relevant trigger if preserving Rebecca is essential. Rebecca’s survival remains separate from the three MO Disks, their output-machine uses, the triple-lock prison door and the rescue of Jill.

  • Confirm whether Chris chose Yes or No in the Serum Room.
  • Verify the earlier Rebecca and Richard encounter state.
  • Confirm whether V-JOLT assistance or direct Plant 42 combat actually activated.
  • Follow the Library Hunter event only if that event is active.
  • Follow the Serum-area Hunter event only if that event is active.
  • Defeat the Hunter before leaving the active rescue location.
  • Reload from before the relevant trigger if Rebecca dies or the desired branch was not activated.

Stabilize a low-Ink-Ribbon run

When Ink Ribbons are running low, stop making exploratory saves. Check every accessible item box and carried inventory before assuming the supply is gone. Additional ribbons appear along normal progression, including later mansion, Guardhouse and laboratory areas, so collect them when they lie on your existing route rather than making a dangerous detour solely for one ribbon.

Reserve remaining saves for meaningful milestones: before a major boss, after opening a new section, before the underground descent and before final escape preparation. Do not spend the last ribbon on an ordinary room transition. Consolidate ribbons in item boxes when possible and carry only what is needed for the next save.

  • Check accessible item boxes.
  • Stop saving after minor transitions.
  • Reserve ribbons for bosses and major route changes.
  • Collect ribbons encountered on the existing route.
  • Do not risk a long detour solely for one ribbon.
  • Keep a reserve for the laboratory or final escape if possible.

Recover laboratory progress without merging separate checkpoints

Treat the laboratory climax as a sequence of independent objectives. The three MO Disks must be collected before their output machines can generate the prison pass codes. In the original North American PlayStation route, the disks are found in the hidden rear-library area of the mansion, the underground storage area behind the second boulder and the laboratory desk outside the Visual Data Room.

Take one MO Disk to each separate output machine: the Small Library, the Morgue and Power Room II. Each machine generates one pass code. The machines do not directly release the prisoner, and using one disk does not substitute for the other two. If a machine does not respond, check that you are at the correct terminal and that you still have an unprocessed disk.

After all three codes have been generated, return to the outer triple-lock prison-access door in the laboratory and enter all three codes there. This opens the coded prison-access route. The triple-lock door is not the same object as the actual cell door. Follow the opened route, reach the cell and perform the cell interaction that releases the opposite playable character. Entering the codes alone is not proof that the character has been released.

Defeat Tyrant-002 as a separate laboratory objective. After the fight, identify which high-security route the current scenario supplies. If the partner-assisted route is active, complete that route. If the scenario instead supplies Wesker’s Master Key, collect it at its story point. On the applicable non-assisted route, the Master Key can open the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door. It does not generate pass codes, replace the triple-lock prison door or remove the need to perform the actual cell interaction on the coded route.

If a disk or output machine was missed, check accessible laboratory rooms and the item box before assuming the route is broken. If the climax has already advanced, follow the current objective rather than inventing a replacement code route. Reload from the last save before the missed step when practical.

  • Collect the mansion rear-library MO Disk.
  • Collect the underground MO Disk behind the second boulder route.
  • Collect the laboratory MO Disk outside the Visual Data Room.
  • Use one disk at the Small Library output machine.
  • Use one disk at the Morgue output machine.
  • Use one disk at the Power Room II output machine.
  • Generate all three pass codes.
  • Enter all three generated codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Confirm that the coded prison-access route has opened.
  • Defeat Tyrant-002.
  • Complete the partner-assisted route when it is active, or collect the Master Key when the applicable non-assisted route supplies it.
  • Use the Master Key for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell or applicable emergency-access door only when that route supplies it.
  • Reach and interact with the actual cell.
  • Release the opposite playable character.

Continue after losing a partner

Partner loss normally changes the ending route rather than immediately blocking the main campaign. Jill can continue after Barry’s death, and Chris can continue after Rebecca’s death. Proceed through the remaining mansion, underground and laboratory objectives while adjusting expectations: the partner-assisted escape sequence and strongest survivor ending may no longer be available.

Do not skip the laboratory checklist after a partner loss. Collect all three MO Disks, process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines, generate all three pass codes and enter those codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door. After Tyrant-002, follow the applicable non-assisted route. If Wesker supplies the Master Key in the current scenario, collect it at that point and use it for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell and flashing emergency-access door as required. Do not assume partner loss automatically produces the key before Tyrant-002 or that it is available in every branch.

Complete the actual cell interaction after the coded prison-access route is open. Release the opposite playable character, use the Master Key for the emergency-access door when required and continue to the escape elevator. The final Battery is a separate post-Tyrant item found beside the escape elevator. Pick it up during the escape route, install it in the elevator socket and continue upward. It is not the Battery used for the courtyard lift.

  • Confirm which partner is alive before the laboratory climax.
  • Reload before the decisive rescue event if the strongest ending is still required.
  • Collect and process all three MO Disks.
  • Enter all three codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Defeat Tyrant-002.
  • Collect Wesker’s Master Key only if the applicable non-assisted route supplies it.
  • Use the Master Key for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell or emergency-access door when required by that route.
  • Complete the actual cell interaction separately from the coded prison route.
  • Release the opposite playable character.
  • Collect and install the post-Tyrant Battery beside the escape elevator.
  • Complete the escape.

Keep the two Batteries separate

The first Battery is obtained during the mansion return and is used at the courtyard lift before the cave descent. If it was left behind, return to its mansion location, collect it and install it at the courtyard lift. It is not a laboratory escape item and is not reused at the final elevator.

The second Battery is collected only during the post-Tyrant escape sequence. Reach the escape elevator after the cell and emergency-access stages are complete, pick up the Battery beside the elevator and install it in the socket. If this item is missing, search the elevator area rather than returning to the Power Room or assuming that the earlier courtyard Battery was meant to remain in your inventory.

  • Confirm that the first Battery powered the courtyard lift.
  • Do not carry the first Battery through the laboratory as an escape requirement.
  • After Tyrant-002, reach the escape elevator.
  • Collect the separate Battery beside the elevator.
  • Install it in the escape elevator socket.

Recover the final escape

After the final Battery is installed, proceed to the helipad. Take the Flare from the nearby supply box and use it when the escape route calls for Brad. The helipad Tyrant is the final exterior encounter. Keep moving around the pad and avoid standing directly in front of its charge and claw attacks.

Brad drops the Rocket Launcher after the encounter has been properly activated. Pick it up, fire at Tyrant and board the helicopter when the escape prompt appears. If the Rocket Launcher does not arrive, continue moving and make sure the fight has been triggered rather than standing over the drop location before the event occurs.

If the final escape fails, reload the save made before the laboratory climax or before the final elevator route, depending on which supplies need to be restored. Stage healing and ammunition in advance, but leave enough inventory space for the Battery, Flare and Rocket Launcher.

  • Complete the actual cell and emergency-access stages required by the route.
  • Reach the escape elevator.
  • Collect and install the post-Tyrant Battery.
  • Take the Flare from the nearby box.
  • Signal Brad when required.
  • Use Brad’s Rocket Launcher against the helipad Tyrant.
  • Board the helicopter and finish the escape.

Confirm that recovery is complete

A recovery run is complete when the failed boss, puzzle or route-opening objective has been cleared, its required item has been used or stored and a new typewriter save exists afterward. Before moving on, restage the next section with a usable weapon, healing and at least one free inventory slot.

For Jill, verify Barry’s status separately from Chris’s rescue. For Chris, verify Rebecca’s status separately from Jill’s rescue. For the strongest protagonist ending, confirm that all three MO Disks were collected, processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines, and converted into three pass codes. Confirm that all three codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, Tyrant-002 was defeated, the partner route or applicable Master Key route was resolved, the actual cell interaction was completed, the opposite character was released, the post-Tyrant Battery was collected beside the escape elevator and installed, the helipad Tyrant was defeated with Brad’s Rocket Launcher and the helicopter escape was completed.

The Special Key is separate from all active-game recovery. It is a post-completion costume-closet reward and cannot restore a partner, generate a pass code, open the triple-lock prison door, replace the actual cell interaction, open the emergency-access route or operate either Battery.

  • Clear the failed objective.
  • Store or use the resulting item.
  • Make a new typewriter save.
  • Restage weapons, healing and inventory space.
  • Verify partner survival separately from prisoner rescue.
  • For Barry’s favorable route, wait for the replacement rope, complete the favorable cave sequence, return after the gunshot and defeat the attacking Hunter.
  • For Chris’s favorable route, verify the Rebecca and Richard conditions, confirm that the intended branch activated and respond to the later Hunter event at its active location.
  • Confirm that V-JOLT assistance was not treated as final proof of Rebecca’s survival.
  • Confirm that all three MO Disks were collected.
  • Confirm that each disk was processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines.
  • Confirm that all three pass codes were generated.
  • Confirm that all three codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Confirm that the coded prison-access route opened.
  • Confirm that Tyrant-002 was defeated.
  • Confirm that partner-assisted progression or the applicable non-assisted Master Key route was resolved separately from code generation.
  • Confirm that the Master Key was used only for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell or applicable emergency-access door on the route that supplies it.
  • Confirm that the actual cell interaction was completed.
  • Confirm that the other playable character was released.
  • Confirm that the post-Tyrant Battery was collected beside the escape elevator and installed.
  • Confirm that the final helipad Tyrant was defeated with Brad’s Rocket Launcher and that the helicopter escape was completed. The Special Key was treated only as a post-completion costume-closet reward.

Before you move on

  • The failed boss, puzzle or route-opening objective is cleared.
  • The resulting key item or reward is stored or used.
  • A new typewriter save exists after the recovery.
  • The next section can be entered with suitable weapons, healing and a free inventory slot.
  • Barry’s survival status is known before Jill’s final laboratory route.
  • For Barry’s favorable route, Jill waited for the replacement rope, completed the favorable cave sequence, returned after the gunshot and defeated the attacking Hunter.
  • Rebecca’s survival status is known before Chris’s final laboratory route.
  • For Chris’s favorable route, the intended branch actually activated and Chris responded to the Hunter event at its active location.
  • V-JOLT assistance was not treated as final proof of Rebecca’s survival.
  • All three MO Disks were collected and processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines.
  • All three generated pass codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • The coded prison-access route was opened.
  • Tyrant-002 was defeated.
  • The partner event was resolved separately from prison access.
  • If the partner survived, the partner-assisted route was activated when the branch made it available.
  • If the partner was lost and the scenario supplied it, Wesker’s Master Key was collected after Tyrant-002 and used for the Tyrant-lab exit, actual cell and applicable emergency-access door.
  • The actual cell interaction was completed separately from the triple-lock door.
  • The other playable character was released.
  • The post-Tyrant Battery was collected beside the escape elevator and installed.
  • The final helipad Tyrant was defeated with Brad’s Rocket Launcher and the helicopter escape was completed. The Special Key was treated only as a post-completion costume-closet reward.

Optional Areas, Extra Weapons and Useful Side Rewards

The original North American PlayStation release has a small number of worthwhile detours. The Colt Python is the best optional mansion reward for either character, Jill can obtain the Bazooka and its three ammunition types, and both campaigns contain useful side supplies such as herbs, shells, Magnum Rounds and grenade ammunition. Chris’s flamethrower is different: it is a character-specific laboratory weapon tied to progression, not an optional collectible. Stage optional weapons in an item box instead of carrying them through every room.

1. Prioritize the Colt Python after the mansion route opens

The Colt Python is available to both Chris and Jill in the original release. First obtain the Red Jewel from the Trophy Room’s mounted deer head. The jewel is reached through the mansion’s upper-floor rooms after the Helmet Key has opened the relevant doors. Return to the first-floor Tiger Statue Room and use the Red Jewel on the statue. The hidden compartment opens and provides the Colt Python.

This detour is optional because the game can be completed without the magnum, but it is one of the strongest practical rewards in the campaign. Magnum ammunition is limited, so reserve the weapon for Hunters, the Black Tiger spider, the Tyrant, or a dangerous situation where the shotgun and Bazooka are unavailable. Do not waste its ammunition on ordinary zombies or Cerberus unless you are trapped or badly positioned.

  • Obtain the Red Jewel before making the Tiger Statue detour.
  • Use the Red Jewel on the Tiger Statue on the mansion’s first floor.
  • Take the Colt Python and return it to an item box if no heavy target is immediately ahead.
  • Keep Magnum Rounds separate from routine handgun ammunition.

2. Plan the return trip through the Hunter mansion

The Colt Python becomes available after the mansion has become more dangerous, so the return path may contain Hunters. Before leaving a safe room, take one dependable weapon, enough ammunition for unavoidable enemies, and at least one healing item. Do not fill every slot with optional ammunition; you may need space for keys or puzzle items on the same trip.

Use door transitions to reset a bad encounter. If a Hunter blocks a corridor, back through the nearest door rather than repeatedly trying to pass it in an open hallway. Jill’s larger inventory makes the detour easier to stage, while Chris should be especially strict about leaving spare ammunition and documents in the box.

  • Save or stage the trip from a nearby safe room if you are carrying a useful save.
  • Carry the shotgun or another reliable close-range weapon for Hunters.
  • Leave ordinary handgun supplies behind if inventory space is limited.
  • Store the Colt Python after collecting it unless a major target is next.

3. Collect Jill’s Bazooka when the terrace route allows it

Jill can obtain the Bazooka on the mansion terrace after the Forest event. The original PlayStation release calls this weapon a Bazooka; it is not a later weapon-part system. The Bazooka accepts Acid, Flame and Explosive Rounds. Jill should collect it when the terrace is already part of her route, because it gives her a powerful alternative to the shotgun and is particularly useful against Hunters and other durable enemies.

The ammunition types should be treated as a limited reserve. Acid Rounds are a strong choice for Hunters and other tough targets. Flame Rounds are useful against certain creatures, while Explosive Rounds provide a general heavy attack. The exact best allocation depends on what ammunition you have preserved, so do not empty the weapon simply because it is available.

  • Jill should collect the Bazooka if the terrace route is already being completed.
  • Do not search for Bazooka parts or upgrades; none are required in this release.
  • Store Acid, Flame and Explosive Rounds in the item box when they are not needed immediately.
  • Keep ordinary zombies and dogs assigned to the handgun or shotgun whenever practical.

4. Use the Guardhouse for supplies, not a remake-only weapon hunt

The Guardhouse and Dormitory contain useful side supplies near the required Plant 42 sequence. Depending on your character and route, these areas provide herbs, First Aid Sprays, shells, grenade ammunition, handgun ammunition and Magnum Rounds. Collect those items when you have room, but do not cross a dangerous room solely for a low-value pickup when your current loadout is already adequate.

The original 1996 game does not contain the remake’s Self-Defense Gun in Room 001. Do not detour to that room expecting that weapon. The Guardhouse’s worthwhile optional pickups are its healing items, ammunition and documents, especially when they can be collected during the normal Dormitory puzzle route.

  • Use the Guardhouse safe room as the staging point for herbs and ammunition.
  • Prioritize healing and ammunition needed for Plant 42 and the return to the mansion.
  • Leave a low-priority handgun magazine behind if taking it would force you to discard a key item.
  • Do not confuse the original Guardhouse item placement with the 2002 remake.

5. Treat Chris’s flamethrower as required progression equipment

Chris can obtain flamethrower equipment in the underground passages. In his campaign, removing the flamethrower from its wall mount affects access through the underground route, so it should be treated as a progression tool rather than an optional reward. Its fuel is limited and it is most relevant to the underground Black Tiger section.

Do not plan to carry the flamethrower through the mansion or preserve it as a final-boss weapon. Chris should clear inventory space before entering the underground passage, use the weapon where the route requires it, and then continue with the standard laboratory loadout. Jill does not need to search for this Chris-specific weapon; her campaign gives her the Bazooka instead.

  • Chris should leave room for the flamethrower before entering the underground passage.
  • Use it for the underground route and its associated hazards rather than routine mansion enemies.
  • Do not treat it as a permanent late-game weapon.
  • Jill should not spend time looking for a flamethrower pickup.

6. Stage optional rewards before the final descent

Before committing to the laboratory route, return optional weapons and ammunition to the box nearest your planned path. A practical loadout is the shotgun or Bazooka for general heavy enemies, the Colt Python with its saved ammunition for the most dangerous targets, and enough healing to survive the laboratory and escape sequence. Keep mandatory items such as the Battery, MO Disks, fuel-related items and laboratory keys easy to retrieve.

Documents, spare herbs and ordinary handgun ammunition can remain in their original rooms or be moved during a convenient box trip. Do not make a separate, risky sweep of every side room just to complete the inventory. The goal is to enter the laboratory with a compact loadout and enough reserve supplies, not to carry every optional reward at once.

  • Store the Colt Python and spare Magnum Rounds near the laboratory staging box.
  • Jill should stage the Bazooka and selected ammunition before the final heavy-enemy sections.
  • Chris should leave the flamethrower out of the final loadout unless the current underground objective still requires it.
  • Keep required laboratory items accessible and preserve at least one reliable healing option.
  • Save after organizing the box when a typewriter and ink ribbon are available.

Before you move on

  • The Colt Python has been collected from the Tiger Statue Room or deliberately skipped with the decision understood.
  • Jill has collected the Bazooka from the terrace or has intentionally continued without it.
  • Any selected Acid, Flame and Explosive Rounds have been moved into a convenient item box or assigned to a planned heavy-enemy loadout.
  • Chris has handled the underground flamethrower requirement without treating the weapon as a final-boss collectible.
  • Before the laboratory descent, mandatory key items have priority in the inventory and optional weapons are staged near a safe-room box.

Planning Multiple Runs — Best and Alternate Ending Routes

The original North American PlayStation release has separate Jill and Chris ending routes. A strongest Jill run preserves Barry, rescues Chris through the three-MO-Disk laboratory route and escapes with Jill, Barry and Chris. A strongest Chris run preserves Rebecca through the active branch, rescues Jill and escapes with Chris, Rebecca and Jill. The laboratory sequence must be completed in the correct order: collect three MO Disks, process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines, enter the resulting codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, open the other character’s actual cell, defeat Tyrant-002, complete the applicable emergency route, retrieve the final Battery and escape. The post-completion Special Key is separate costume-closet content.

Create the laboratory checklist before committing to an ending

Collect all three MO Disks before attempting the prison rescue. In the original North American release, one is in the hidden rear section of the mansion Library, one is in the underground area reached after the second boulder, and one is on the desk outside the Visual Data Room in Laboratory B2. These are collectible data disks, not finished pass codes.

Use one MO Disk at each of the three original-release pass-code output machines: the Small Library, the Morgue and Power Room II. Each machine creates one pass code. The locations are separate, but the three codes are used together at the outer triple-lock prison-access door. Do not leave the laboratory assuming that processing a disk automatically releases the prisoner.

At the outer triple-lock door, enter all three generated codes through the door’s terminals. The opened route leads into the prison passage. Follow that passage to the other playable character’s actual cell and perform the separate cell interaction. The door opening and the cell opening are two different objectives.

The pre-Tyrant Lab Key, sometimes identified in guides by its Power Room-related name, is used for ordinary laboratory progression. It is not an MO Disk output item, a prison code, a partner-survival item or the post-Tyrant escape Battery.

After Tyrant-002, follow the route created by your survivor state. If the partner survived, the partner-assisted emergency and self-destruct progression can activate. On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key may be supplied during the active story event. When supplied, it can be used to leave the Tyrant Development Lab, open the actual cell and open the flashing emergency-access door required by that route. It does not create pass codes, operate output machines or replace the three-code prison route when that route is being used.

Do not confuse the first Battery, used earlier to power the courtyard lift, with the final Battery. The final Battery is beside the escape elevator during the post-Tyrant escape sequence. Install it, use the Flare at the helipad, take Brad’s Rocket Launcher and defeat the final Tyrant.

  • Collect the mansion, underground and laboratory MO Disks.
  • Process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines.
  • Enter all three generated codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Follow the opened prison passage to the actual cell.
  • Open the other playable character’s cell separately.
  • Defeat Tyrant-002.
  • Complete the partner-assisted route or the applicable non-assisted Master Key route.
  • Collect and install the final Battery beside the escape elevator.
  • Use the Flare, take Brad’s Rocket Launcher and escape by helicopter.

Jill’s strongest run: preserve Barry and release Chris

During the later upstairs Piano Room sequence, defeat or evade Yawn and descend through the floor opening. When Barry’s first rope breaks, remain in the pit and wait for him to return with another rope. Leaving immediately prevents the strongest Barry route. Make a protected save before this event if you intend to vary the ending later.

In the underground caves, agree to go with Barry when he offers to lead Jill. When the next choice determines who goes first, allow Barry to lead, stay with him through the cave route and take the left-hand route at the relevant fork. Do not abandon the active cave sequence. When the game provides the later opportunity to respond to the gunshot and Hunter attack, return and deal with the Hunter so Barry survives.

The exact cave conversations determine Barry’s outcome, so do not treat the underground section as an ordinary combat detour. If Barry dies there, a later laboratory save cannot restore him. Reload the protected cave save instead. Preserving Barry is separate from rescuing Chris; both requirements must be completed for the strongest Jill ending.

Before the laboratory climax, confirm that all three MO Disks are in your inventory or item box. Process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines. Take the three resulting codes to the outer triple-lock prison-access door, enter all of them and follow the opened prison passage to Chris’s actual cell. Examine the cell and complete the separate release interaction. Barry’s survival does not open Chris’s cell automatically.

Defeat Tyrant-002. With Barry alive and the required earlier events preserved, complete Barry’s assisted emergency and self-destruct route when it appears. Then collect the final Battery beside the escape elevator, install it, light the Flare, take Brad’s Rocket Launcher and defeat the helipad Tyrant. The strongest Jill ending has Jill, Barry and Chris escaping by helicopter after the mansion is destroyed.

  • Wait for Barry’s replacement rope.
  • Preserve Barry through the underground trust and Hunter events.
  • Process all three MO Disks at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • Enter all three codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Open Chris’s actual cell separately.
  • Defeat Tyrant-002.
  • Complete Barry’s assisted emergency route.
  • Collect and install the final Battery.
  • Escape with Jill, Barry and Chris.

Chris’s strongest run: preserve Rebecca through the active branch

For the intended Rebecca-assisted plan, choose Yes when the relevant Rebecca assistance choice appears. In the original release, this supports the V-JOLT route, but the answer alone is not an unconditional guarantee. The earlier Rebecca and Richard events, including the way the preceding encounters were handled, determine which valid Rebecca sequence becomes active.

If Rebecca’s Guardhouse assistance event activates, prepare V-JOLT in the Chemical Room and use it on the root system connected to the Aqua Ring. Chris then finishes the weakened Plant 42 encounter. If Rebecca does not appear, use the direct-combat recovery route shown by the active game state; do not keep waiting for a scene that was not triggered.

After Chris returns to the mansion, respond immediately to the active Rebecca danger event. The Yes-oriented setup is associated with the Library-side Hunter event in the original release, but do not travel there solely because Yes was selected. Follow the warning or scream that actually occurs and defeat the Hunter at the active location. Rebecca must survive both her earlier Guardhouse involvement and this later Hunter event.

At the laboratory, process the three MO Disks at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines. Enter the three resulting codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, follow the prison passage and interact with Jill’s actual cell. The triple-lock door is not itself the cell release.

Defeat Tyrant-002 with Rebecca alive and complete the Rebecca-assisted emergency and self-destruct route when it appears. Her survival enables that route, but it does not generate codes or replace the actual-cell objective. Collect the final Battery beside the escape elevator, install it, use the Flare and take Brad’s Rocket Launcher. The strongest Chris ending has Chris, Rebecca and Jill escaping together.

  • Choose Yes in the relevant Rebecca assistance conversation.
  • Preserve the earlier Rebecca and Richard conditions for the intended branch.
  • Complete V-JOLT if Rebecca’s assistance event activates.
  • Resolve the later Rebecca Hunter event at its actual location.
  • Process all three MO Disks at the three correct machines.
  • Enter all three codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Open Jill’s actual cell separately.
  • Defeat Tyrant-002 with Rebecca alive.
  • Complete Rebecca’s assisted emergency sequence.
  • Collect and install the final Battery.
  • Escape with Chris, Rebecca and Jill.

Chris’s alternate run: direct Plant 42 progression

For a separate alternate Chris campaign, choose No in the relevant Rebecca assistance conversation and plan to defeat Plant 42 directly. Enter the Plant Room with a dependable firearm, healing and enough ammunition to retreat safely. Keep moving instead of standing beneath the falling plant matter. If your supplies are poor, return to the item box before beginning the fight.

The later Rebecca event remains dependent on the earlier story state. Do not send Chris automatically to one rescue location based only on No. Follow the warning or scream that actually activates. This branch is associated with the Serum or nearby medical-area event, but the established earlier conditions determine the scene. If Rebecca is not preserved, continue from the active game state and accept the resulting ending branch.

The laboratory requirements do not change. Collect all three MO Disks, process them at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II machines, enter all three resulting codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, follow the opened prison passage and open Jill’s actual cell. Do not substitute the Master Key for MO Disk processing or the code terminals.

Defeat Tyrant-002 and observe which post-boss route the game supplies. If the non-assisted route provides Wesker’s Master Key, use it for the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell or the flashing emergency-access door when those doors require it. The Master Key is not guaranteed after every partner loss, and it is not a replacement for the coded prison route when the three-code route is being followed.

Finish by collecting and installing the final Battery beside the escape elevator, using the Flare and defeating the helipad Tyrant. This route keeps the direct Plant 42 plan separate from the Yes-oriented V-JOLT and Rebecca-survival campaign.

  • Choose No in the relevant Rebecca assistance conversation.
  • Defeat Plant 42 directly as Chris.
  • Respond to the Rebecca event that actually activates.
  • Process all three MO Disks at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • Enter all three codes at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Open Jill’s actual cell.
  • Defeat Tyrant-002.
  • Use the Master Key only if the applicable non-assisted route supplies it and a door requires it.
  • Collect and install the final Battery.
  • Complete the applicable helicopter escape.

Keep the laboratory keys and post-completion reward separate

The Lab Key is a pre-Tyrant progression item. Use it to reach ordinary laboratory areas, the power systems and the elevator route. It does not generate pass codes and has no role in partner survival.

Wesker’s Master Key is route-dependent. On the applicable non-assisted climax, it can open the Tyrant Development Lab exit, the other character’s actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door. It is not a universal replacement for the MO Disks, output machines or triple-lock terminals.

The partner-assisted route is separate from the Master Key route. Barry or Rebecca surviving can activate assisted emergency and self-destruct scenes, but partner survival does not process MO Disks, create pass codes or automatically release the other character.

The Special Key is awarded after completion for the costume closet. It is not the Master Key, Lab Key, prison-access item, pass-code item, actual-cell item or escape Battery.

  • Use the Lab Key for pre-Tyrant laboratory progression.
  • Use the Master Key only when the active non-assisted route supplies and requires it.
  • Keep partner survival separate from MO Disk processing and cell access.
  • Treat the Special Key as post-completion costume content.

Use protected saves for separate ending plans

For Jill, keep a save before the later Piano Room rope event and another before entering the underground Barry sequence. These saves protect the two major Barry conditions independently. If a cave choice produces the wrong route, reload before the cave conversation rather than attempting to repair the result in the laboratory.

For Chris, save before the Rebecca assistance choice. Use separate saves or separate campaigns for the Yes-oriented V-JOLT plan and the No-oriented direct Plant 42 plan. Save before Plant 42 so the chosen route can be retried without replaying the mansion.

On the Yes-oriented plan, keep a save before the later Rebecca warning or scream. On the No-oriented plan, keep one before the Serum or medical-area section where the active rescue cue is expected. Once the game has established a branch, a much later reload will not reliably exchange one rescue location for another.

In the laboratory, save after processing the three MO Disks and entering the triple-lock codes if a typewriter is available on your route. This protects the Tyrant, actual-cell, final Battery and helipad stages. It cannot restore Barry or Rebecca after an earlier death.

Keep separate memory-card saves for Jill’s Barry route and Chris’s Rebecca route. Do not overwrite a branch save until the ending confirms the intended survivor group.

  • Jill save before the replacement-rope event.
  • Jill save before the underground Barry choices.
  • Chris save before the Rebecca assistance choice.
  • Separate Chris saves for Yes and No branches.
  • Chris save before the active later Rebecca event.
  • Laboratory save after processing the disks and entering the triple-lock codes.

Before you move on

  • Jill’s run confirms that Barry’s replacement rope was received.
  • Jill’s run confirms that the underground choices and later Hunter response kept Barry alive.
  • Jill’s run confirms that all three MO Disks were processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • Jill’s run confirms that all three generated codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Jill’s run confirms that Chris’s actual cell was opened separately.
  • Jill’s run confirms that Tyrant-002 was defeated.
  • Jill’s run confirms that Barry’s assisted emergency sequence was completed when available.
  • Jill’s run confirms that the final Battery beside the escape elevator was collected and installed.
  • Jill’s ending shows Jill, Barry and Chris escaping by helicopter after the mansion’s destruction.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that the Yes-oriented Rebecca branch was selected.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that the earlier Rebecca and Richard conditions preserved the intended branch.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that Rebecca completed V-JOLT if that event activated.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that the later Rebecca Hunter event was completed at its actual active location.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that Rebecca was alive at the laboratory climax.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that all three MO Disks were processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that all three generated codes were entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that Jill’s actual cell was opened separately.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that Tyrant-002 was defeated and the Rebecca-assisted emergency sequence was completed.
  • Chris’s strongest run confirms that the final Battery was collected and installed.
  • Chris’s strongest ending shows Chris, Rebecca and Jill escaping by helicopter after the mansion’s destruction. A separate Chris No run confirms the direct Plant 42 route, resolves the Rebecca event that actually activated, completes the three-disk and triple-lock sequence, opens Jill’s actual cell, uses the Master Key only if the applicable non-assisted route supplies it, retrieves the final Battery and completes the helicopter escape.

Afterword — Shortcuts, Difficulty Choices and Appendix of Common Questions

Use these final checks for the standard North American PlayStation release of Resident Evil, released on April 1, 1996. The route below is for the original layout, item placement and partner events. Do not transfer it directly to Director’s Cut, DualShock, Arrange-mode, remake or later-port guides.

Choose a practical first-run plan

Jill is usually the easier first campaign because she has eight inventory slots and receives the Lockpick from Barry. Chris has six standard slots, uses Small Keys for several comparable locks and has a more demanding Rebecca-dependent route. With either character, stage the next objective at an item box instead of carrying every weapon, key and healing item at once.

The original PlayStation release uses fixed camera angles and tank-style movement. Turn before entering a narrow corridor, align with an enemy, fire from a safe distance and retreat through a doorway or around a corner. Hunters, Yawn, Plant 42 and Tyrant are safer to handle from controlled positions than by trying to circle them in an open room. Optional rooms can often be bypassed when their enemies do not block required progress.

  • Carry only the items needed for the next short objective.
  • Leave optional weapons and surplus ammunition in the nearest item box.
  • Take at least one healing item into an unexplored danger area.
  • Use doorways, corners and room transitions as defensive choke points.
  • Keep a reliable save before a major partner event or boss attempt.

Use typewriters and Ink Ribbons deliberately

Typewriters are found in safe rooms, and each save consumes an Ink Ribbon. Save after meaningful milestones rather than after every room. Useful milestones include the completed mansion opening, the Guardhouse, the return to the mansion after Plant 42, the cave route and laboratory preparation.

Keep a pre-laboratory save until you have confirmed your MO Disks, Lab Key route and escape supplies. If a boss attempt fails, reload the milestone save and restage your inventory instead of repeatedly saving a weak position. On the original release, careful item-box use matters more than carrying a large mixed loadout.

  • Save before major bosses and long route changes.
  • Keep a pre-laboratory save until the final escape is complete.
  • Consolidate ammunition and healing before saving.
  • Do not spend ribbons on routine room clears unless the preceding route was unusually dangerous.

Rebecca FAQ: Yes, No and the event that actually triggers

For Chris, answering Yes when Rebecca asks whether she should help is the intended setup for her V-JOLT assistance route. That answer alone does not guarantee the later scene. Earlier Rebecca and Richard events, the active story branch and the relevant trigger conditions determine which Rebecca event remains available.

Answering No points toward the direct Plant 42 route. Chris should then be prepared to defeat Plant 42 without Rebecca making V-JOLT. Do not describe Yes as an unconditional promise that Rebecca will appear in the Library, and do not describe No as a guaranteed prediction of one fixed later room.

After the Guardhouse, follow the active event. If Rebecca is attacked by a Hunter in the Small Library, reach that room and defeat the Hunter. If the active scenario places the rescue in the Serum-area medical room, resolve that encounter instead. If the expected scene is not active, continue the direct route rather than repeatedly revisiting inactive rooms. Jill has no Rebecca V-JOLT branch.

  • Yes is the intended Chris V-JOLT setup, not a guarantee by itself.
  • No is the direct-Plant-42 setup, not a universal prediction of the later rescue location.
  • Complete the active Hunter rescue if you want Rebecca alive for the strongest Chris ending.
  • Follow the current in-game event rather than relying only on the earlier conversation.

Laboratory order: three disks, three machines and the prison route

For the original North American PlayStation release, collect the three MO Disks from the hidden study in the mansion Library, the small storage area behind the second underground boulder and the desk outside the Visual Data Room in Laboratory B2. These locations differ from Director’s Cut arrangements.

On Laboratory B3, process the three disks at three separate pass-code output machines. The machines are in the Small Library, the Morgue and the Mid Power Room, also referred to as Power Room II in route plans. Do not substitute the Lab Storeroom: that is not one of the original-release output-machine locations. Each machine produces one part of the prison access sequence.

Take all three resulting pass codes to the outer triple-lock prison-access door and enter them there. Opening that door only reaches the prison route. Continue to the other playable character’s actual cell and complete the separate cell interaction. For the strongest ending, this coded route is the required way to rescue Chris as Jill or Jill as Chris.

Tyrant-002 is defeated after the laboratory power and elevator sequence. The pre-Tyrant Lab Key, also called the Power Room Key in some guides, is used to reach the laboratory areas required before that battle. It is not the Master Key and is not connected to the post-completion costume reward.

On the applicable non-assisted route, Wesker’s Master Key can open the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell and the flashing emergency-access door. It does not produce pass codes, operate any output machine or replace the three-disk sequence when pursuing the strongest partner-assisted ending. If the partner survived, complete the partner-assisted emergency route when it activates.

  • All three MO Disks collected.
  • One disk processed in the Small Library.
  • One disk processed in the Morgue.
  • One disk processed in the Mid Power Room or Power Room II.
  • All three generated pass codes entered at the outer triple-lock prison door.
  • The other playable character reached through the coded route and released from the actual cell.
  • Tyrant-002 defeated.
  • The Master Key used only when the applicable non-assisted route supplies it.
  • The partner-assisted emergency route completed when the partner survived.

The two Batteries and the final escape

The first Battery is the mansion item found near the second-floor Library. Carry it to the courtyard lift after the Guardhouse and mansion-return sequence, then use the lift to reach the waterfall and cave route. This Battery is an early progression item and is unrelated to the final escape Battery.

The final Battery cannot be collected before Tyrant-002. After the Tyrant battle, prison-access work and the applicable emergency-access stage, reach the escape-elevator area and take the Battery beside the elevator. Install it at the elevator, then proceed toward the helipad.

At the helipad, use the flare to signal Brad and survive the final Tyrant encounter. Brad’s Rocket Launcher defeats that Tyrant. The helicopter escape completes the strongest route when the partner and other playable character have been preserved and rescued.

  • The mansion Battery powered the courtyard lift.
  • Tyrant-002 was defeated before the final Battery was collected.
  • The final Battery was taken beside the escape elevator.
  • The final Battery was installed at the escape elevator.
  • Brad’s Rocket Launcher defeated the helipad Tyrant.
  • The helicopter escape completed.

Edition differences and key FAQ

This chapter targets the standard North American PlayStation release, not Director’s Cut, DualShock, Arrange-mode or the 2002 remake. Enemy placements, item locations and MO Disk positions change between editions. If you change versions, make a new route plan and verify every laboratory room before committing to the climax.

The Lab Key is the pre-Tyrant laboratory progression key. The route-dependent Master Key is obtained from Wesker only in applicable circumstances and opens certain high-security doors, including the Tyrant-lab exit and, depending on the route, the actual cell and emergency-access door. It does not replace the output machines, the three pass codes or the coded prison route for the strongest ending.

The Special Key is a separate post-completion reward used for the costume closet. It is not a laboratory key, does not open the prison, does not operate an output machine and is not needed for the final Battery or helicopter escape.

For a follow-up run, Jill is useful for learning the mansion, Guardhouse and laboratory layout. Chris provides the tighter inventory challenge and Rebecca’s conditional events. Keep a laboratory save until the final escape has completed.

  • Confirm that the game is the original North American PlayStation release.
  • Do not reuse remake or Director’s Cut maps without verifying every item and trigger.
  • Keep the Lab Key, Master Key and Special Key separate.
  • Keep the courtyard Battery and final escape Battery separate.
  • Treat the Special Key as optional post-completion content only.
  • Make a fresh route plan when changing editions.

Before you move on

  • All three MO Disks have been collected.
  • The disks have been processed separately in the Small Library, Morgue and Mid Power Room or Power Room II.
  • All three generated pass codes have been entered at the outer triple-lock prison door.
  • The other playable character has been reached and released through the separate actual-cell interaction.
  • Tyrant-002 has been defeated.
  • The partner-assisted emergency route has been completed when the partner survived, or the applicable non-assisted Master Key route has been completed.
  • The Master Key has not been treated as a replacement for code generation or the output machines.
  • The final Battery has been collected beside the escape elevator after the Tyrant and prison stages and installed for escape.
  • Brad’s Rocket Launcher has defeated the helipad Tyrant.
  • The helicopter escape has completed.
  • The Special Key is treated only as optional post-completion costume-closet content.

THE NEXT SAVE POINT

Finishing up

The strongest Jill route requires Barry to survive the shotgun-trap, replacement-rope and cave events; all three MO Disks to be collected and processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines; all three generated pass codes to be entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door; Tyrant-002 to be defeated; Chris to be released through the coded prison route and actual cell interaction; Barry’s assisted emergency route to be completed; the post-Tyrant Battery to be collected and installed; Brad’s Rocket Launcher to defeat the helipad Tyrant; and Jill, Chris and Barry to escape.

The strongest Chris route requires the applicable Rebecca branch and later Hunter rescue to preserve Rebecca, followed by all three MO Disks being processed at the Small Library, Morgue and Power Room II output machines, all three generated codes being entered at the outer triple-lock prison-access door, Tyrant-002 being defeated, Jill being released through the coded route and actual cell interaction, Rebecca’s assisted emergency route being completed, the post-Tyrant Battery being collected and installed, Brad’s Rocket Launcher defeating the final helipad Tyrant and Chris, Jill and Rebecca escaping.

If the partner-assisted route is unavailable, continue through the normal laboratory route. After Tyrant-002, obtain Wesker’s Master Key when the applicable non-assisted scenario supplies it and use it for the Tyrant-lab exit, the actual cell and any applicable emergency-access door. The Master Key is an alternate access method for those doors, not an output-machine item or pass code.

The Special Key is a post-completion reward associated with a qualifying completion. It is used for the costume closet and is not the Master Key, a pass-code item, a substitute for the output machines or a substitute for the self-destruct route.
